"Questions about the identity of Southeast Asia are implicitly questions about whether Southeast Asia is or can be a nation writ large. For people who live in the region, the answer is 'no.' The concept of Southeast Asia evolved from the need of Europe, America and Japan to deal collectively with a set of territories and peoples that felt no particular identification with one another."---Locating Southeast Asia

4-0 out of 5 stars Vascular Flora of Ohio-Asteraceae
I have used this volume numerous times while keying out plants in Southern Ohio (Meigs County) and I have found it very helpful. It is useful that is covers only Ohio (I generally use Gleason and Cronquist for this area, and then there are many Asteraceae to sort out) and so narrows down this impressively large family. Also, since they devote a whole large-sized book to this topic, there is a lot more information in many of the keys to further bore down to the species. And then there are the county maps and good quality black and white illustrations, all adding to this books allure.
I use it with The Flora of West Virginia (Strausbaugh and Core) which has most of the plants found in this part of Southern Ohio.
The biggest problem may be its size. While I do sometimes carry it into the field, when it is added alongside with the other books of this series, it is a bit of a back-breaker. But it works well and I think I can wrench a few more years from my back.
To sum up, bring this book along if you will be keying out plants in Ohio.

Product Description
Bringing immigrants onstage as central players in the drama of rural capitalist transformation, Anne Kelly Knowles traces a community of Welsh immigrants to Jackson and Gallia counties in southern Ohio. After reconstructing the gradual process of community-building, Knowles focuses on the pivotal moment when the immigrants became involved with the industrialization of their new region as workers and investors in Welsh-owned charcoal iron companies. Setting the southern Ohio Welsh in the context of Welsh immigration as a whole from 1795 to 1850, Knowles explores how these strict Calvinists responded to the moral dilemmas posed by leaving their native land and experiencing economic success in the United States.

Knowles draws on a wide variety of sources, including obituaries and community histories, to reconstruct the personal histories of over 1,700 immigrants. The resulting account will find appreciative readers not only among historical geographers, but also among American economic historians and historians of religion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My grandfather's ancestors'history.
I was born in Portsmouth, Ohio over 60 years ago and lived in southern Ohio for the first 12 years of my life, I visited relatives in both the Jackson and Gallia county while young.About six years ago after moving from California to Michigan, I started regularly visiting southern Ohio.My grandfather, grandmother and mother are buried in Moriah cemetary. My gradfather's mother's family are the Isaac family that immigrated from Wales mentioned in the immigrants in the back of the book.

I hadn't read any thing in historical geography before and it was exciting toread about the conditions both of the land and Calvenistic Methodist influence on the residents.I now have a better understanding of my family and the Welsh experience in south eastern Ohio.

4-0 out of 5 stars AMUST for genealogists studying Welsh ancestors in OHIO.
A graduate thesis that is easy to read and follows the travels of Welshmeninto PA and OH and the communities they founded. Why would someone buy landas poor as what they left behind? Why settle in the middle of America? Whyleave all that is familiar behind? Not uncommon questions for anyonestudying their ancestors, but the Welsh reasons, while often similar toother groups, are still refreshing in this work. Ms Knowles has helpedthe genealogist greatly with this work. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars All trees, no forest.
[Note: If you are an old-time upper middle class Columbus resident with little interest in the how's and why's, this is the book for you. Go Buckeyes and all that.]

Columbus, Ohio.

Behind the mask, it is an amazing city. A thriving town with stunning sprawl and clever consumer oriented design, and a surprising diversity as tens of thousands of new Somali and Mexican immigrants pour into this post-modern Oz. The thriving gay culture; the rule of yuppie; the sickening Appalachian slums; the movie-set consumer cities of Polaris, Easton and New Albany; the subsumption of small satellite towns; the sharp racial lines; the real estate bonanza and on and on and on . . . all of it hidden from the reader by Hunker's misty sentimentality.

I, too, love Columbus. However, this is a subject in desperate need of serious study, and is in many ways the face of a new majority America wanting for explication. Its' transitions and losses are the hallmark of an economy remaking an entire region in its image, a stark contrast to post-industrial Cleveland or hilly Cincinnati.

Granted, this is a personal geography: a travelogue that misses more than it sees. The thin (in every sense) volume is devastating testament to the need for a critical approach to geography, least it be reduced to a series of lamentations, winking accolades, and the perpetuation of a such limited reading of the rich story embedded in the dynamic urban fabric. The geography of Columbus is waiting to be written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Henry Hunker's account of post-World War II Columbus
Columbus, Ohio: A Personal Geography is Henry Hunker's account of post-World War II Columbus from his perspective as a professional geographer and longtime resident of this Ohio city. Personal and anecdotal, Columbus, Ohio spans the past fifty years when the city expanded to become the largest municipality in the state. Hunker includes itineraries for two tours (one in 1956, the other in 1999) and uses them to compare the city then and now. The informative and engaging text is enhanced with eighteen photographs, and four maps of the metropolitan area. Columbus, Ohio provides the reader with fascinating and thought-provoking view of the physical, economic, industrial, and cultural life of Columbus. This outstanding presentation could well serve as a template for historical surveys of other significant and influential American communities. ... Read more
