Coastal zones are particularly affected by ecological, social and economic problems related to population growth and industrial or tourism activities. One of the most serious of these is environmental damage resulting from oil spills. Effective management strategies therefore need to consider coastal areas as dynamic and integrated systems.

Highlighting monitoring, analysis, modelling and control, this volume contains papers presented at the Fifth International Conference on Environmental Problems in Coastal Regions and the associated Fourth International Seminar on Hydrocarbon Spills.

Over 40 contributions are included and these focus on the following topics: COASTAL ENVIRONMENT: Ecology and the Environment; Water Quality Issues; Wetlands; Sediment Problems; Coastal Restoration; Atmospheric Aspects; Sea States Forecasting. Product Description
In the early 1970s, Alaska Senator Ted Stevens promised Cordova fishermen "not one drop" of oil would be spilled in Prince William Sound from proposed tanker traffic and the trans-Alaska pipeline project. Fishermen knew better. Spanning nearly 40 years, Not One Drop is an extraordinary tale of ordinary people who take on the world’s richest oil companies and most powerful politicians to protect Prince William Sound from oil accidents.

Author Riki Ott, a rare combination of commercial salmon "fisherma'am" and PhD marine biologist, describes the firsthand impact of this broken promise when the Exxon Valdez oil spill decimated Cordova, Alaska, a small commercial fishing community set in 38,000 square miles of rugged Alaska wilderness.

Ott illustrates in stirring fashion the oil industry'’s 20-year trail of pollution and deception that led to the tragic 1989 spill and delves deep into the disruption to the fishing community for the next 10 years. In vivid detail, she describes the human trauma coupled inextricably with that of the Sound's wildlife and its struggle to recover.

Contrasting hard-won spill prevention and response measures in the Sound to dangerous conditions on the trans-Alaska pipeline, Ott critically examines shifts in scientific understanding of oil spill effects on communities and ecosystems, exposing fundamental flaws in governance and the legal system. Her varied background, professional training, and activist heart lead readers confidently and clearly through the maze of laws, back-story, and government red tape as large as that of the five billion dollar lawsuit itself, instilling a new-found sense of understanding of this environmental tragedy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for the Gulf of Mexico citizens
Dr. Ott's life story is interesting and compelling. The parallels of what happened in Alaska's Prince William Sound due to Exxon and what is currently occuring to the coastal areas of LA, MS, AL and Florida is chilling. This book appears to be the blue print of what we can expect from BP, state & federal government....and the forecast is dire. It's an interesting read. I felt compelled to purchase mulitiple copies in order to "spread the word" to my coastal community. Dr. Ott speaks to the grim impact of oil (and oil dispersants) on the fishing industry, the environment (short and long term), tourism, physical and mental health issues of the citizens of Alaska. If I never hear the words "Drill, Baby, Drill", I'll live a long and happy life. British Petroleum is following Exxon play by play. "We will make this right". Exxon issued hard hats to clean up workers rather than respirators, ditto BP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book
I read this book for a presentation that I had to do for my MBA program, I never intended to like it.The book was written so that I could understand it, not all scientific terms.I feel for all of the people of Cordova, I had no idea that this was still going on, or that they got a really crappy deal from the US Government, the same government that should have protected them.Riki made everyone so real, and you can feel for them with every new devastating development that "The Big One" brought to them. Now in light of the BP Spill in the gulf I wonder when people are going to realize that water and oil really don't mix.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not One Drop???Of what???
The book was very attractive in topic because of the effect on both our own need for fuel and the means of how to do that safely. The author was very well fitted for the topic and I learned much of the oil industry and the needs of concern thereof.
The collection of facts regarding this industry and the deeper fare of the community in affect was well shown and displayed in good order to understand fully of the title.
However, as the story continued I was finding more of the technical and legal topics than I cared to hear and began to wonder these were the "drop" also related to law?
My best congradulations to this author for the book and her future in her work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't hold my interest
I didn't get too far into this book. It got off to a rambling start, and I found myself wondering when the author was going to get to the heart of the story. I didn't get too far.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Exxon Valdez disaster, redux.
I've been working on this book for a number of months. It's just not a "sit down, and read it from cover to cover" type of book.

Not One Drop is not a book about the Exxon Valdez wreck, although the spill is central to this story. It's not a book about Cordova, Alaska, although Cordova also is central. It's not a book about salmon, herring, fishing, Alaskan politics, oil extraction and removal in Alaska, tankers, government policies, the legal system, or corporate ethics, although all of these topics are covered in this book.

This is a book about author Riki Ott's growth and development, her self-discovery, just prior to and twenty years after the grounding of the Exxon Valdez. The title, by the way, comes from then-Senator Ted Stevens' claim that not one drop of oil would touch the water of Prince William Sound.

Well, technically, 10 million+ gallons wasn't "one drop."Steven's was right about that.

After receiving her PhD in marine pollution, Ott decided her life needed to revolve around salmon fishing in the Cordova area.So she was at ground zero when the Exxon Valdez ran around.Ott writes about the efforts of both the company and community in cleaning up the spill, but a good deal of the book is about the disparity between the company and the community in declaring the spill cleaned up and the economic distress resulting from the spill considered over and done with.

Needless to say, there was disagreement on both topics.

Ott reviews the reports, the studies, and the judicial proceedings revolving around the spill. She discusses the impacts on the herring and salmon fisheries, on sea otters, and on the biodiversity of the area.

Riki Ott relives the court and hearing battles, which included wire-taps, spying, arrests, and engineered misinformation.

What she also does is discuss how the spill changed her life and the lives of those closest to her... the human cost. This human cost was never allowed to be part of the damages equation, and included suicides, bankruptcies, divorces, the post-traumatic event disorders, and more.

I believe this book really is about the human flotsam and jetsam resulting from the spill. There is a lot to be sad and angry about.Legally, it appears, the "corporate entity/citizen" has the same standing as, say, Ott's friend Linden, whose life is chronicled over two decades. But corporations have millions to invest in lawyers and legal proceedings.

Linden couldn't pay the interest on her seine permit.

So Not One Drop is the story of an environmental disaster and its consequences from an insider's point of view.Exxon hasn't yet written its story... and don't hold your breath waiting for it.

By the way, contemporary tech culture uses the term "Valdez" (in this case, rhyming with "sleaze"), to mean an accidental release of a large quantity of private or privileged information. I think Ott would approve.

As I stated, this was a hard book to maintain a high and consistent interest level.I read an ARC; it would have been wonderful for the book to contain photos, and I hope they are in the final edition. This book will be required reading for those studying the event and its ramifications.Let's hope somebody learns from it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exxon Valdez
Thank you for the history. We are now reliving it in The Gulf of Mexico.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Environmental Must Read!
Dr. Riki Ott has devoted her life to uncovering the truth about the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill. She has a Ph.D. in Marine Toxicology and has worked as a commercial fisherwoman off the shores of Alaska. She was one of the first people to witness the devastation caused by the oil spill. She knew this was the big one and she asked herself the question, "I know enough to make a difference, but do I care enough for the Sound to commit my life to this?" Clearly Dr. Ott does care enough as she has worked tirelessly to educate people about the truth about what really happened and about the toxicity of oil.

This is the story of people who care and people who don't. Most people have heard a bit about the spill, but most people have not heard about the health damage done to workers involved with the clean up. Many people stepped up to help the minute they heard about the spill, putting their lives on hold to do what they could to clean up the spill not realizing the devastating effects it would have on their own health. Many people suffer with symptoms of a mysterious illness due to the toxicity of the oil they were inhaling along with the powerful and toxic cleaning agents. Imagine being on an oil-covered beach surrounded by dead and decaying animals "engulfed in clouds of oil mist and saltwater steam." (89) It is hard to imagine enduring even one minute of this let alone weeks on end without proper safety equipment. Dr. Ott tells the stories of the people who unknowingly sacrificed themselves to a greater good and the people who lied and covered up the truth about the damaging health effects from oil exposure.

This is also the story of the non-human inhabitants affected by the oil spill. It is the story of the birds, mammals, fish, plankton and other life in Prince William Sound. How many were lost due to oiling? Are populations recovering? What are the long-lasting effects? Dr. Ott has put all the studies together to give a broad overview on the subject. There are 64 pages of references to this book! Dr. Ott has interviewed people and read all she could find to compile what is known at this point. This book provides a comprehensive look at pre-spill studies, early oil spill studies, ecosystem studies, and the status of the Sound.

This is not an easy book to read because it exposes such awful truths, not just about Exxon's oil spill, but about our own contribution, from fossil fuel use, to damaging our health and our environment. However, this book leaves readers feeling hopeful as Dr. Ott takes the third part of the book to discuss her recommendations to reduce risk of oil spills and oil pollution, inspiring people everywhere to take action by supporting responsible companies and doing what they can to reduce consumption of fossil fuels.

It is hard for me to find the words to adequately express what a tremendous contribution this book makes to the world. It should be in every library in the country and instructors should include it in the readings for courses in ethics, environmental sciences, business, and others. I highly recommend this book to everyone because this is a story that needs to be told lest we continue on our same path making the same mistakes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for college courses
Dr. Ott's book will serve as an excellent supplement to course syllabi around the country. The book's interdisciplinary approach makes it a perfect educational tool for a variety of departments - public health, environmental studies, ecology, and sociology to name a few. Ott's ability to combine rigourous science with an accessbile writing style offers an engaging expose of oil's effects on humans and nature.Perhaps just as important, the book also presents students and teachers with an inspiring model of how one scientist's passion and determination can uncover truths of global importance.

Highly recommended for teachers and students.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good read!
Dr. Ott , like the lone pedestrian facing a tank about to run him over, faces the giant Exxon. In Sound Truth and Corporate Myth$, Ott reveals the far reaching effects of the Valdez oil spill on human health, wildlife populations, and the environment.Worker safety and environmental laws based on antiquated science need to be revamped, the industry needs to be held fully accountable and finally we need to take a look at ourselves and the role we can play in reducing the toxicity of our environment. This journey with Dr. Ott, through the initial devastation and lingering after effects of the Exxon Valdez oil spill, tells the incredible magnitude of the disaster. Through her first hand account we are transported to Prince William Sound, and hear the silencing of the birds, see the slick lapping the shore and smell the inescapable fumes. We also learn that drilling is no longer necessary when looking for oil in Alaska, just scrap away some rocks and a little sand and there on the beaches you'll find it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Urgent action required
Dr. Ott's book is not only an exceptionally good read but her message must reach our Senators and Representatives now and action must be taken.Dependence on oil is NOT the way of the future. It is highly toxic not only to the environment but to human health as well.We need to start now, to conserve our oil reserves and develop alternative energy sources or the chances are, that our retirement years will be the setting for a major economic shift toward the worst.

If President Bush would like to enter the history books as a man of incredible foresight, he'd better pick up this banner and start leading us in that direction now.

When oil spills occur in U.S. waters, federal law places primary liability on the vessel owner or operator - that is, the responsible party - up to a statutory limit. As a supplement to this 'polluter pays' approach, a federal Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund administered by the Coast Guard pays for costs when a responsible party does not or cannot pay. This book is based on a GAO report on oil spill costs and select program updates on the recent San Francisco spill. Specifically, it answers three questions: How many major spills (i.e., at least $1 million) have occurred since 1990, and what is their total cost? What factors affect the cost of spills? And what are the implications of major oil spills for the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund? ... Read more

Book Description
From the origin of the leak, to the amount of oil released into the environment, to the spill's duration, the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill poses unique challenges to human health. The risks associated with extensive, prolonged use of dispersants, with oil fumes, and with particulate matter from controlled burns are also uncertain. There have been concerns about the extent to which hazards, such as physical and chemical exposures and social and economic disruptions, will impact the overall health of people who live and work near the area of the oil spill.

Although studies of previous oil spills provide some basis for identifying and mitigating the human health effects of these exposures, the existing data are insufficient to fully understand and predict the overall impact of hazards from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on the health of workers, volunteers, residents, visitors, and special populations. Assessing the Effects of the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill on Human Health identifies populations at increased risks for adverse health effects and explores effective communication strategies to convey health information to these at-risk populations. The book also discusses the need for appropriate surveillance systems to monitor the spill's potential short- and long-term health effects on affected communities and individuals.

Assessing the Effects of the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill on Human Health is a useful resource that can help policy makers, public health officials, academics, community advocates, scientists, and members of the public collaborate to create a monitoring and surveillance system that results in "actionable" information and that identifies emerging health risks in specific populations. ... ON JUNE 23, 2000, the iron-ore carrier MV Treasure, en route from Brazil to China, foundered off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa, spilling 1,300 tons of oil into the ocean and contaminating the habitat of 75,000 penguins. Realizing thJuneat 41 percent of the world’s population of African penguins could perish, local conservation officials immediately launched a massive rescue operation, and 12,500 volunteers from around the globe rushed to South Africa in hopes of saving the imperiled birds.Serving as a rehabilitation manager during the initial phase of the three-month rescue effort, Dyan deNapoli—better known as "the Penguin Lady" for her extensive work with penguins—and fellow volunteers de-oiled, nursed back to health, and released into the wild nearly all of the affected birds. Now, at the tenth anniversary of the disaster, deNapoli recounts this extraordinary true story of the world’s largest and most successful wildlife rescue. When she first entered the enormous warehouse housing most of the 19,000 oiled penguins, the birds’ total silence told deNapoli all she needed to know about the extent of their trauma. African penguins are very vocal by nature, prone to extended fits of raucous, competitive braying during territorial displays and pair-bonding rituals, but these poor creatures now stood silently, shoulder to shoulder, in a state of shock. DeNapoli vividly details the harrowing rescue process and the heartbreaking scenarios she came up against alongside thousands of volunteers: unforgettable images of them laboriously scrubbing the oil from every penguin feather and force-feeding each individually; the excruciatingly painful penguin bites every volunteer received; and the wrenching decisions about birds too ill to survive. She draws readers headfirst into the exhausting physical and emotional experience and brings to life the cast of remarkable characters—from Big Mike, a compassionate Jiu-Jitsu champion with a booming voice, who worked every day of the rescue effort; to a man named Welcome, aka "the Penguin Whisperer," who had the amazing ability to calm any penguin he held in his arms; to Louis, a seventeen-year-old medical student who created a new formula for the highly effective degreaser used by the rescue mission—whose historic and heroic efforts saved the birds from near extinction. The extraordinary international collaboration of scientists, zookeepers, animal rescue groups, and thousands of concerned individuals helped save the African penguins—recently declared an endangered species—from an all-too-common man-made disaster.

DeNapoli’s heartwarming and riveting story is not just a portrait of these captivating birds, nor is it merely a cautionary tale about the environment. Product Description
Approximately 3 million gallons of oil or refined petroleum products are spilled into U.S. waters every year. Oil dispersants (chemical agents such as surfactants, solvents, and other compounds) are used to reduce the effect of oil spills by changing the chemical and physical properties of the oil. By enhancing the amount of oil that physically mixes into the water, dispersants can reduce the potential that a surface slick will contaminate shoreline habitats. Although called for in the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 as a tool for minimizing the impact of oil spills, the use of chemical dispersants has long been controversial. This book reviews the adequacy of existing information and ongoing research regarding the effectiveness of dispersants as an oil spill response technique, as well as the effect of dispersed oil on marine and coastal ecosystems. "Oil Spill Dispersants" also includes recommended steps for policy makers faced with making hard choices regarding the use of dispersants as part of spill contingency planning efforts or during actual spills. ...
