5-0 out of 5 stars Both realistic and reassuring--a real contribution.
This book is a genuine treasure for those trying to explain to children the painful events that can occur into today's world. That's because children's experiences and voices are honored within a caring adult contextand structure. I found the children's remarks had a cumulative, powerful, and even healing effect, which reflected accurately their concerns andshowed them trying to make sense of a tragic and frightening event. In theend the reader is left with not only the very real anger and loss, but withthe incredible spirit of everyone--both within Oklahoma and outside ofOklahoma--who reached out in compassion to help a fellow human being. Ms.Lamb, an Oklahoma native, was in Oklahoma City when the Federal Buildingwas bombed. Perhaps that gives her book its ring of authenticity. We oweher thanks for taking on such a difficult subject and writing about it in arealistic, but reassuring way. This one's a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review of the literature
McNally brings together a wide and seemingly disparate array of issues regarding political events in the US and ties the threads together to help to make sense of such events. I felt the book could have benefited from a more thorough introduction in order to place the events of Chappaquiddick to other well known tragedies such as the Oklahoma City bombing up to 911, but the amount of information revealed and the rigorous presentation of data and the logic of the writer make up for any lack of style. These are important issues that most Americans have not considered in detail, not only in each case in themselves, but also the relationship of one terrorist incident to the next. Without positing a grand conspiracy, McNally presents voluminous evidence that our government is largely run, or at least influenced, by shadowy forces, and that by analyzing the details of events such as Chappaquidick and 911, we can better understand the circumstances and direction of our country. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Letters of children, expressing their feelings about the Oklahoma City bombing in ways only children can
In the lengthy aftermath of the events on September 11, 2001, the horrific bombing in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma has been somewhat forgotten. While the numbers of dead and injured were greater in New York, the change in the national mood was in some ways greater over the Oklahoma City bombing. For the perpetrators were domestic in origin and it should have forever dispelled the false sense of invulnerability Americans had to terrorist acts.
This book is a collection of letters from very young children expressing their feelings about the bombing in ways only children can. All adults should realize that children feel threatened by such events more than adults do, because they have less understanding of the causes of the bombing. The author is to be commended for putting together this collection of letters, it contains lessons for all people, from the youngest child that can read and write to the oldest adult.

4-0 out of 5 stars Touching tribute

I bought this book because I have a huge interest in Tim McVeigh and the OK Bombing. Also because one of the 3 peoplewritten about in the book is Julie Marie Welch, a 23 year old Social Security interpreter who planned to be a Spanish teacher.
Julie is definitely one of the best known bombing victims and I always found her to be pretty interesting.
The 3 people profiled in this book wrere chosen for the book because their strong Catholic faith and how they applied and lived that faith in everyday life. The other 2 victims written about are 28 year old Mark Bolte, a environmental engineer for the HighwayAdministrationfrom Arkansas and 33 year old Valerie Koelsch , a native Oklahoman who worked at the credit union. Each chapter is named after a line from the prayer of St. Francis , which is a really nice idea and works well with the theme and structure of the book.
Each chapter has a section on each of the three and the sections are composed with writings filled withmemories and experiences about each person from family, friends, co workers, teachers, fellow parishioners and pastors.
All 3 have 3 or 4 pages of pictures of them in the book, donated by friends and family.
I enjoyed reading about the faith and life of each person.
Mark Bolte and Valerie Koelsch didn't receive as much publicity as Julie Welch , I think because Julie has a wonderful father who has been very active since the bombing in speaking to the press both about his daughter and his strong opposition to the death penalty. So this book gave them a lucid voice.
Finally, the thing that I loved most about the book is that this book showed no seething hatred for Tim McVeigh, nor gleeful anticipation and enjoyment of his death. That was incredibly refreshing becausemost of the time when reading anything writtenby anvictim's family thats what you got/get.
In fact the book spoke a few times about a family members efforts or desire to eventually forgive Tim and I thought that was awesome.

4-0 out of 5 stars Their Faith Touched Me
Reading about three young people who were killed in a terrorist act doesn't sound very inspiring. But Their Faith Has Touched Us isn't about terror or tragedy. Instead, it's about how each one of us makes an incredible difference, no matter how old we are, what we do for a living, or even how long we live. Without getting bogged down in sentimentality or saccharine, Maria Ruiz Scaperlanda paints a vibrant story of love and passion for life with the lives of these three young people.

4-0 out of 5 stars Small Things With Great Love
As I sit here to write a short review of this book, I realize that I will be sifting through these stories and recollections for some time.Initially you may want to read this book to gain an insight into the Oklahoma City bombing and the extent of its tragedy: these are only three of the 168 lives lost that day, a multiplication of loss that leaves one reeling.

But Maria Ruiz Scaperlanda's book is not only about loss--it is not even mainly about loss.Instead, it is a telling of the gifts these three young people were to those around them. This gathering of recollections is, in turn, a gift to all of us beyond the circle of Valerie's, Mark's, and Julie's immediate influence.

Through this book, Valerie's, Mark's, and Julie's lives speak a profound truth to us: it is not always our calling to do great things, but we are all called to do little things with great love.In this book, friends and family treasure the "little" things these three did in their daily lives.Their stories come together in a beautiful mosaic of caring and compassion.

Inevitably, readers will find themselves wondering: what impact do we have in the lives of others? In the rush of our daily lives, how might we do little things with great love?If we were to die today, what would the people in our lives cherish about us?

Our reflections and answers to these questions are the gifts that Valerie, Mark, and Julie still offer us.I thank Maria Ruiz Scaperlanda for being a channel for those gifts.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Gift to Us All
It is so easy to avoid real life today, losing ourselves in the latest fiction or subject of interest, but when we do choose to encounter it, the rewards are usually great. So it is with Maria Ruiz Scaperlanda's gift to us all, "Their Faith Has Touched Us."For those who are willing to make the journey, Maria brings to life the beauty of three young Oklahomans who were killed in the tragic bombing of the Murray Federal Building in Oklahoma City in 1995.Through the eyes of those who knew and loved them we too learn to know them and to sense the deep loss.It is a sad and hopeful book at the same time, inspiring true respect for the people, faith, and values that helped form three such memorable, and missed, individuals. Some books we read for distraction, some we read for information, and some we read because they enrich us at our very core.Maria's book we read to be enriched.

5-0 out of 5 stars Their Faith Has Touched Us
"Their Faith Has Touched Us" teaches us about abundant life revealed in the face of horrible tragedies which occurred in the April 19, 1995, bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.Of the 168 people killed in the blast (171 counting the unborn), the remarkable lives of threeyoung, Catholic, adults are memorialized and celebrated.Author, Maria Ruiz Scaperlanda, covered the bombing as a reporter for the Catholic News Service. In her introduction, she describes in vivid detail, the terror-filled moments after the attack and our nation's reaction to the devastation. The true message of this book, however, lies in its author's extensive collection of tributes to the lives of these three young adults, Mark Allen Bolte, Valerie Jo Koelsch and Julie Marie Welch. In this collection of poems, letters, thoughts, and narratives, provided by their mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, grandparents, co-workers, teachers and friends, we encounter the extraordinary persons in Mark, Valerie and Julie, who, through living an "ordinary" way of life, fulfilled the commitment of their Catholic faith.

Author, Maria Ruiz Scaperlanda collects heartwarming depictions of these separate lives from their respective families, friends, and co-workers and profoundly entwines the stories in the context of the prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi, "Prayer for Peace."The result graces the reader with the distinct message that Mark, Valerie and Julie, through their zest for life, laughter and pursuit of God, not only found happiness in their young lives, but provided everyone they touched with a special gift of wonderful, happy memories. One is also reminded here that when facing the daily struggles of life, God, through His Son,is present during every precious moment, granting His faithful ones peace, love, joy, hope, and strength for healing, until the day they are called to see the face of Christ.

I first read "Their Faith Has Touched Us" in early 1998, shortly after it was published. As a native of Oklahoma City, and a Catholic, I was deeply moved by the stories of Mark, Valerie and Julie. While I will never fully comprehend the level of personal loss that their families and friends experienced, I shared in the pain of that horrible day and the many days, weeks, and months that followed. In re-reading "Their Faith Has Touched Us" in the year 2000, I recognize that as time goes on, the loss of these precious lives will never fully be recovered. However, their inspiration has made a substantial impact on my commitment to my daily walk with God.Valerie Koelsch would have been 38 years old this year, the same age as I.I hope to carry on the legacies of Mark Allen Bolte, Valerie Jo Koelsch, and Julie Marie Welch, who will remain forever young.Their faith, indeed, has touched me.

Product Description
On April 19, 1995, in Oklahoma City, a bomb went off outside the Murrah Federal Building. 168 people, many of them children, were killed, & hundreds of other were wounded. It was the worst case of domestic terrorism in the history of the U.S. Timothy McVeigh & Terry Nichols were arrested & accused of being the only two involved in this crime. But Jones reveals what really happened, before & after. He reveals a tangled web of conspirators, including possible links between Islamic terrorist Osama bin Laden & Terry Nichols. He also shows how the U.S. government worked to prevent the true story from emerging -- & that the government may have had prior knowledge about the attack.Amazon.com Review
Stephen Jones, the chief defense counsel for Timothy McVeigh, the first of two men convicted in the tragic 1995 Oklahoma Citybombing, lays out a case that McVeigh and Terry Nichols, alsoconvicted in the bombing, did not act alone. In his attempt to defendMcVeigh, Jones traveled the globe to turn up every possible scrap ofinformation that might lead him to the "others unknown" cited by thegrand jury that heard evidence in the bombing case. Some of theevidence is compelling, including the severed leg that did not matchany of the victims; Jones is convinced it belonged to "John Doe numbertwo," an unidentified man credited with planting the bomb in theMurrah Office Building. Jones also lays out a very strong argumentthat Terry Nichols was in touch with Muslim fundamentalist terroristsin the Philippines and that he asked them to help him build abomb. But Jones's refusal to break his attorney-client privilege bydiscussing anything that McVeigh said to him forces the author to walka tightrope, revealing nothing about his client's role in the bombingwhile trying to outline the potential involvement of others.

Non-conspiracy buffs may find it far-fetched that the United Statesgovernment would want to cover up information about the possibleinvolvement of Muslim fundamentalists or white supremacists in thebombing, but Jones has two arguments to support the idea. First, hesuggests, the government was trying to cover its tracks for not havingheeded various danger signs before the bombing took place. Inaddition, this was too big and too horrible a crime to go unpunished;it had to be closed without question and with no suspects left atlarge. For those who are persuaded by Jones's arguments, the chillingquestion remains: when--and where--will the "others unknown" strikenext? --Linda Killian ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 9/11 forecast in flashing lights
I write this review on 9/11 exactly 9 years after what Americans call 9/11 but which as an Australian I call "the REAL thing, after the trial in Oklahoma".

I have made 5 Customer Images for this book via Covers Are Us (please take a look) to explain my theory that the American Govt has never wavered from following Hitler's formula for Power, ie "It is most fortunate for Governments that the people do not think" - Adolf Hitler, all the way from McCarthyism in 1950 to the present day. After all if a formula works, why change it.

It was in 1999 that I was browsing in a bookstall in Cairns and saw this book. The first amazing thing about it was the price reduction from $35.95 to $9.95 but was still not selling, except to me, and poor as I am I think I would have paid full price, because even as I paid and started browsing as I continued shopping, I had reasoned that for "reasons not yet fully known, BUT obvious to a blind monkey", this book SHOULD become extremely important to any American that in fact DOES think, but as Hitler said, most don't.Or as Dylan sang back in pre Vietnam times, "but you never ask questions, with God on your side"

After reading it fully I tried to express views in popular forums, chat shows and the like but nobody was listening, so on 9/11 in 2001 as I woke to hear the news about this SECOND attempt on the WTC that I said ho-hum, Hitler was sure a smart bloke, and the rest is history.

The other book that takes up where Hitler left off is Rule No.1 by Rupert Morgan, who uses brilliant satire to explain why Governments do such things to their own people and why they get away with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Important Analysis
Stephen Jones blends an insightful analysis of the events that have transpired since April 19, 1995 and the date of McVeigh's execution in Terre Haute, Indiana based on two important premises: The government investigation was incomplete and McVeigh did not receive a fair trial. This is as much a book for law students as it is for conspiracy artists. Jones' southern charm comes forth in his capacity as author yet his role as defense lawyer never escapes the reader. Jones covers his bases much of the time, pointing out early in the prologue that he would not have been able to write this detailed account of his conversations with McVeigh had McVeigh's appellate team attacked his capacity as a lawyer during McVeigh's trial.

This book is far from sensational and actually is closer to a calm, reasoned look at both McVeigh as a person and United States v. McVeigh as a trial set in perhaps the most bizarre and compromising circumstances in the past fifty years. This book perfectly suits any law school course involving mass destruction or suits any university course concerning political dissent or even the political science of law.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good on the facts but needs to go deeper
Others Unknown put into print what the majority of thinking Americans sensed about the Oklahoma City Bombing.

There had to be more people involved.

It all started with the FBI drawings of mystery man number 3, who was described by no more than 3 people to have been with McVeigh. He looked Middle Eastern. Hmmm, nope no terrorist acts would ever occur on American soil right. Then the second little facts that weren't put to light, the bomb making materials that they had receipts for would never have been enough to do that sort of damage. And on it goes.

The interesting thing is that Stephen Jones (the author and McVeighs attorney) even points the finger at Osama Bin Laden back in 1998. Hello is anybody listening. Hindsight is great, but I think we all knew there was more than meets the eye about this ordeal.

The weakest part of the book is that MR. Jones never delves deep enough into why the government cover-up. He barely scratches the surface, but I think that is the real mystery. Why was the government not screaming that we know there was at least one other person involved and we need to find him? Is it simply that Bill Clinton didn't want to rock the boat? Could it have been that he was trying to create a legacy for himself, other than ????gate (you fill in the scandal)? Did he think naming an Arab as a suspect might destroy peace talks with Israel and Palestine? These are all only conjectures but the book should have hit these issues harder.

Overall a good book, especially for the ignorant Americans who are spoon-fed their daily dose of propaganda from CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, Etc., and think its news.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Government Given Way to "Power, Venality, and Display"
Stephen Jones, the lead counsel for Timothy McVeigh, writes an engrossing book that is not only about his client's case, but gives equal treatment about a nefarious government reminescent of Rome of the Roman Empire. In his writings Jones not only presents many deficiencies in the Federal government's case against McVeigh in the Oklahoma City bombing, but also paints the picture of a government agency completely hell-bent on "winning." Jones, in advocating for his client, contends that the prosecution's case was incomplete and circumstantial; exculpatory evidence was either withheld or stalled that could have helped in giving McVeigh a fair trial.

In his analysis, Jones does raise enough doubt in McVeigh's "direct" involvement in the bombing, and more that one can of worms is opened. For example, an extra leg is found in the Murrah Building rubble that does not belong to any victim. Additionally, several red flags that are discovered by Jones and his team may imply that the bombing was planned from abroad. For example, how can only two men plan and execute such a bombing of such magnitude, something said to be impossible by bomb experts in other countries where this kind of thing is routine? Jones questions Terry Nichols' ignorance of the OKC bombing plans. Nichols made several trips and many telephone calls to the Philippines, a hotbed of terrorist activity -- that's never taken seriously in connecting Nichols, much less in mitigating McVeigh.

Jones' book is also his own biography foray into a high profile case that transformed his life and his beliefs about U.S. justice. His book, as he writes, is not meant to cash in on this case, but to expose the truth. Jones believes McVeigh should have been found not guilty (Read especially the acknowledgements!), and portrays his client as a man, not the demon characterized by the press. Although Jones does not offer why McVeigh was involved at all, this would seem to be covered by attorney-client privilege. Despite this, whether or not Jones convinces the general public of the facts that McVeigh did not receive a fair trial and that the government successfully hid the truth is left for the reader.
