Product Description
I was born in Louisiana, way before the War. I think it was about ten years before, because I can remember everything so well about the start of the War, and I believe I was about ten years old.

My Mammy belonged to Mr. Sack P. Gee. I don't know what his real given name was, but it maybe was Saxon. Anyways we all called him Master Sack.

He was a kind of youngish man, and was mighty rich. I think he was born in England. Anyway his pappy was from England, and I think he went back before I was born.

Master Sack had a big plantation ten miles north of Arcadia, Louisiana, and his land run ten miles along both sides. He would leave in a buggy and be gone all day and still not get all over it.

There was all kinds of land on it, and he raised cane and oats and wheat and lots of corn and cotton. His cotton fields was the biggest anywheres in that part, and when chopping and picking times come he would get negroes from other people to help out. I never was no good at picking, but I was a terror with a hoe!

Product Description
A brief introduction to Oklahoma history and Indian Lands becomes personal in this memoir of the author's mother, Helen Hussman Morris. It presents a description of the evolution of Oklahoma's educational system through the early part of the twentieth century, as well as a memorable reflection on rural American life in the early 1930s.

Helen Hussman was born on Indian land near Fonda, Oklahoma, in 1910.She was the daughter of a German farmer from Iowa who had been hired to farm and raise cattle for members of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Indian tribe.Within a few years, her parents were able to purchase a farm near Seiling and begin to apply their energies to their own property. As a young child, Helen helped her father in the fields, spending long hours plowing, planting and harvesting with teams of horses.Meanwhile, her mother and sisters ran the house: cooking, sewing, washing, ironing, without the luxury of electricity or running water. Their hard life had its cheerful side: during the winter, Helen and her two sisters and brother helped their dad run his traps and hunt rabbits; in the summer after harvest, they joined other families in camping outings, cooking over campfires, fishing, and gossiping.

Although Helen wanted to be a nurse, her father didn't want her to enter that line of work.During her junior year at Seiling High School, she was given the opportunity to do some substitute teaching. She discovered that she enjoyed working with small children and decided to become a teacher. In the late 1920s, it was possible for a high school student to take a county exam and earn a certificate to teach for one or two years, and that is what she did.

Helen was interviewed by the three school board members of Orion School about fifteen miles from her home, and by the time she graduated high school in 1929, she had a teaching job earning $80.00 per month.During that summer, she still helped out on the farm, but her mind was filled with plans for her first teaching job with pupils in all eight grades.Helen's sister made her some new clothes for her first job, and she began to gather the materials she would need, including a teacher's bell. When Helen went to see the building before school started, she was temporarily astounded to find it isolated on a sand hill in an area unsuitable for farming or ranching. For $20.00 per month, she had arranged to board with a school board member and shared a two-room cabin, two miles from the school, with the widow and her three older sons.Helen's father picked her up on Fridays, so she could spend the weekends at home on the farm.

To the sixteen pupils in all eight grades, Helen was required to teach agriculture, orthography, reading, penmanship, English grammar, physiology and hygiene, geography, U.S. history and civics, and arithmetic, as well as the evils of alcohol, morals, human kindness, and reverence for the flag. She organized games for recess and lunch time and devised special programs for the holidays. It was also her responsibility to provide monthly programs for the community, when they tried to raise extra money for the school with box- and pie-suppers and some kind of entertainment.During the winter, Helen had to arrive early to get the fire going and heat the building before the first pupils arrived. After school was out, she had to clean the building and lock it before walking two miles back to the house in which she stayed. All of this was a tremendous responsibility for a young girl just out of high school.

Helen was basically on her own with no real assistance from the county school superintendent or anyone else, except a teacher friend of her sister who became Helen's mentor. She soon discovered that the teacher's meetings were a disappointment. No one offered any real advice on how to teach seven or eight subjects to all eight grades in the same room. However, all teachers knew that their jobs d ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Complement to My Grandmother's Memoirs
Full of tough times & amazing (or appalling!) revelations. Fills in the many blanks and background assumptions about early rural Oklahoma school teaching that my grandmother somehow thought everyone would remember in the 21st century. Tone is exactly that of my grandmother, as well -- everything is tedious and hard, "but we enjoyed it." I don't believe it for a minute, but everybody must have pretended they did back then.

The book relates facts in chronological order, without much attention to telling a story or building an argument. Nevertheless useful for research into period. ... Read more

Poverty is hard to overcome, and must be recognized as one of the most important variables in a low performing school.Poverty does not have to dictate academic achievement.Elements in some high poverty schools, create an environment where poor students can achieve as well or better than affluent students. Schools must make a conscious effort to develop climate elements that contribute to a positive environment.Leadership, ambitious instruction, and a positive student-centered school climate contribute significantly to student performance.Teachers must place emphasis on high expectations for students when the goal is academic excellence. The higher the poverty rate, particularly when the rate is 80% or more, the lower the predicited academic achievement. Two variables that influence student achievement are teacher quality and leadership quality. It can be concluded that students in high poverty/low achieving schools need the best teachers under the leadership of an effective and experienced leader.Prinicpal tenure of five yers or more predicts higher academic achievement. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I paid for this.
I am a medical student and I thought this book would be useful but I was wrong.I have learned the hard way that you should really look into the credentials of the authors of books like this.Slightly more useful was Success Types in Medical Education which was FREE at this site: [...].It wasn't fantastic but Success Types was much more balanced in its view of the Myers Briggs types saying that each had its advantages and disadvantages.Shain's book did not account much for the fact the lines can be fuzzy because humans are complex and a reader risks being pulled into the belief that the types they are dominant for define everything we do.All the "advice" I had to learn to do well in college so this didn't really reveal anything new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice preparation/tips/advice
I am not going to medical school but I am going to pharmacy school in the fall. The college I will be attending recommended this book. I'm glad they recommended it because now I am prepared with some more useful study skills. Not only does it give advice and tips on study skills and test taking strategies but also about stress management, how to work in a group, who you should study with (depending on your personality type and learning style -which this book tells you), how to defeat negative thoughts, some time management, and more. I am pleased with this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
I will be starting med school this fall and I'm trying to prepare myself for the overload of information as best as possible. This book was very informative but a bit long (easy to loose focus at times) and I'm not surehow helpful the section on the boards (the USMLE) is since the test haschanged from a two day paper-and-pencil exam to an 8 hour computer-basedtest (Everyone has told me that the First Aid for the USMLE series are thebest books for board prep). In the Oklahoma notes, you start out bytaking a modified version of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (apsychological instrument). The results of this test went a long waytowards explaining my personality and what my previous study skills wherelacking.I discovered how to study better, take better notes andproblem-solve based on my type. Next were different strategies for learningand retaining information for the long haul-from the next exam, to theboards, to residency and beyond.I learned terrific ways of taking notes, annotating text books, pre-reading for class and condensing the largeamount of information from lectures and books. The time management sectionsoffered very easy and realistic advise. All in all, I'm glad I bought thisbook because I learned many new things. However, I would stronglyrecommend the following book over this one if one had to choose: How toExcel in Medical School. It is easier to follow, a faster read and takesyou subject by subject. If you have enough time and money, buy both! ... Read more

Volume 1 in the Julian J.
