Oklahoma shines
This "Portrait of America" series, in my opinion, has been a fairly reliable source of information for elementary school students needing to do research reports on any of the 50 states. And while this installment, "Oklahoma", doesn't succeed as well as some of the others, it is still very valuable. It is crisply written, and very accessible to young students, who should gain a lot from this book. ... Read more

Both realistic and reassuring--a real contribution.
This book is a genuine treasure for those trying to explain to children the painful events that can occur into today's world. That's because children's experiences and voices are honored within a caring adult contextand structure. I found the children's remarks had a cumulative, powerful,and even healing effect, which reflected accurately their concerns andshowed them trying to make sense of a tragic and frightening event. In theend the reader is left with not only the very real anger and loss, but withthe incredible spirit of everyone--both within Oklahoma and outside ofOklahoma--who reached out in compassion to help a fellow human being. Ms.Lamb, an Oklahoma native, was in Oklahoma City when the Federal Buildingwas bombed. Perhaps that gives her book its ring of authenticity. We oweher thanks for taking on such a difficult subject and writing about it in arealistic, but reassuring way. This one's a keeper.
