a rare, first hand account
Despite our historical knowledge of the impact of the boarding school period on native american culture and families, it is amazing to find a personal account that managed to find positives in what most other could only attribute negatives. Fortunate Eagle's boyhoood reminiscence allows for the child-like acceptance of one's living conditions. When compared to the wretching poverty of the reservation, the boarding school with 3 square meals a day, seemed like a salvation to some. Fortunate Eagle believes the regimentation it taught, served his brothers well in their future military careers.This is a unique view-point and should be included in any studies on the boarding school period, particularly since it is from one who lived it.

An anecdote can't disprove the majority of the evidence

Inspiring Montana History
As a Montanan who likes the game of basketball, I found this to be an inspiring, well-written story and one I had never heard.I had no idea!The individuals involved were "fleshed out" so they took on personality and I began rooting for them to overcome and triumph in their game of life.It's also terrific Montana history.I am so impressed with the book that I ordered a copy for each of my children (and their families) and we will use it as the basis for our family book club.

Great read
I have also read "Shoot Minnie Shoot", it was OK but very disappointing that the author chose to take "artistic license" with the story. The facts are so much better then fiction.




I have been waiting for years for this book and I am not disappointed.

My grandmother played on this team. I learned things about her I never knew.

If all someone is looking for is a girls basketball story, you can find that anywhere.

The history of our families, our grandmothers, aunts, cousins finally told after over 100 years.

Well researched - but
I was disappointed as the book was very factual but became very repetitous.The program before the games & and the performances at the World Fair, were itemized each time.The reader got bogged down with these details.I felt the book should have been edited more.Having read "Shoot, Minnie, Shoot" and disappointed that it was a novel and introduced the author's imagination, I was very interested in the "facts", just not that many repeated so often.However, I did enjoy the newspaper articles that were included in "Shoot, Minnie, shoot" rather than the "notes" in Full Court Quest.The book definitely cleared up some misconceptions that I had about the team, including that they did not play any boy's teams or have a championship game as such at the World Fair.It was very interesting that the Government Indian School was presented in such a good light and prepared the young people with skills and confidence.I also enjoyed "The Years Thereafter", a nice follow-up on the members of the team.My expectations may have been a bit high for the book, based on a review in Montana I had read. ... A Wonder Book for Children and Adults
This book is a great deal of fun for adults and children alike. It captures the World War II era from a child's point of view and offers a unique perspective toward growing up in small town America during that terrible time. It is heart warming and enormously funny! We read this book as a family and everyone from my youngest child, age 6, to my eldest son, age 16, up to my self looked forward to every minute. We have purchased the sequels as well and they hold up just as well as this one!

The Rachel Resistance by Molly Levite Griffis
This is a fabulous book! The 2nd book in a 3 book series by Oklahoma Award Winning Author, Molly Levite Griffis, it gives a very accurate account of life during the WWII era, despite the fact that its fictional. I recommend anyone, even adults, read this book when wanting to know more about WWII. No, it won't give you details of battles, or information about the players in the war; rather this book brings it down to a different perspective. This book is the perspective of civilians, of a child, living during the WWII era. How life was for her. Fictional or not, the sentiment comes across in a very entertaining way. And, although you can read each of the 3 books in this series seperately, I highly recommend reading them all and in order; The Feester Filibuster, The Rachel Resistance, and Simon Says. You won't be disappointed in Molly's story telling abilities!!!

A welcome addition to the study of Indian Education.
In the latter part of the nineteenth century, the United States Government initiated a plan to assimilate Indians into Anglo society by forcing Indian children to attend reservation boarding schools.These schools attempted to "civilize" Native Americans, teaching them the Anglo-American culture, and therefore preventing the Indians, as Clyde Ellis states, "from returning to the blanket."To Change Them Forever studies education on the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Reservation in western Oklahoma at the close of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. Ellis uses research, personal memoirs, official school records, and interviews to give the reader an insight into life at the Rainy Mountain Boarding School.He describes a myriad of problems encountered by the school's superintendents.The author examines curriculum, social life, and educational process while exposing years of governmental neglect.Ellis also evaluates the impact of United States Indian policy upon the Kiowa children attending the school.The author contrasts the Rainy Mountain School with schools at Ft. This book dosen't stop repeating itself
The Stricklands is a pretty good book. I would of given 4 stars, but it kept repeating things over and over again!!! I think the author forgot that somtimes Less Is More.

Steinbeck would have approved
This is a reissue of a book first published in 1939. It was considered by many critics destined to become a classic and was mentioned as a candidate for the Pulitzer Prize. As fate would have it the book was overshadowed by another book with an amazingly similar theme-John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. As they say, the rest is history.
Steinbeck's book went on to be a best selling classic and this book lapsed into obscurity. This book is the story of Depression-era Oklahoma tenant farmers struggling to survive in a hostile environmental and economic climate.
The conflicting methods of the brothers Strickland to securing economic and social justice, one favoring criminal activity and the other a more legal course, makes for a powerful theme and wonderful book.
This book deserves the second chance provided by OU Press and belongs on the shelf of any reader interested in Oklahoma history and the dust bowl era. It is surely in league with Steinbeck's classic. ... Read more

Teen girls love this book
Anna Myers is a master at developing characters with strong voices and souls. Complex Ethan and the somewhat head-in-the-clouds Claire click in a way that makes you want them to be together forever.

Ending Ruined It
This book had potential but fell short by a mile. The characters and writing were good, but the tear jerking ending and stitched together plot spoiled the book. There was absolutely no reason why it should have ended like it did. If the author had made up her mind about the Ethan-might-be-Schizophrenic storyline and changed the finale completely, this novel may have been salvageable, but Anna Myers was obviously in a hurry to finish writing this.

Could have been better
This book started out strong, and I'm not exactly sure what happened to it, but it limped along to the finish line.

I didn't like the main character Clare at all. She was selfish and acted all holier-than-thou. But her worst offense was putting a boy before her so-called bestfriend, which is a no-no as everybody should know.

I won't be reading any more books by Anna Myers.

Love and Friendship
Would you choose your best friend over your boyfriend or do the opposite?. Ethan Between Us is a great book for teenagers. I really recommend you to read it. If you see lying on a bookstore, dont have any second thoughts and but it because I know you will not regret it. This book is about 2 best friends(Clare and Liz) being there for each other even at tough times. But Ethan(a gorgious, easy to talk to, and mysterious guy) moved to thier neighborhood and Clare sets eyes on him. If you want to know what happened, read the book! ^_^

OVERRATED
Book has some history of the school .I was looking for genealogy info as i had 3 generations of women in my family attend Bloomfield.As the title suggests i was looking for my grandmothers story. Very few personal stories of Bloomfield & the students..more so a history of the Nation , not Bloomfield Academy's students.

Listening to Our Grandmothers' Stories
Thoroughly enjoyed this book and fully appreciate why it received this year's American Indian Prose Award.

Cobb has approached what is clearly, to her, a personally significant topic in a manner that is sensitive far beyond her personal views.The history of the United States' treatment of American Indians is complex and troubled.Cobb, relying on both archival research and personal interviews with women who attended the Bloomfield Academy when the school was under federal administration, has provided a fresh and compellingly complicating perspective on Indian boarding schools, a specific facet of this history.Most significantly in her work, she has highlighted, through these women's own voices, the contemporaneous perspective of natives directly impacted by the United States' varying policies.What emerges is a well-documented story of Native self-direction, self-identification, and, above all, survival and hope for the future.Her final chapter, especially, poignantly brings this point home.Rather than overtly ideologize her topic, Cobb has allowed the story primarily to tell itself.

Semiprecious
If you've ever had a bad day, you would have an idea of what Garnet was going through. In this book, Garnet has bad days for a whole year.With few simple mercies, Garnet manages to survive.Garnet learns that, when the going gets tough, the tough can get going.
Garnet is a twelve-year-old girl who has lived in Texas all her life.Until one muggy August day in the early 1960's, her mother decides to pick up and move to Nashville.Garnet and her older sister, Opal, are dropped off at their aunt's house in Willow Flats, Oklahoma. Meanwhile their mother settles into Nashville, promising to come back before the beginning of the school year.I'll let you read the book to figure out what happens.
I enjoyed this book very much.Like most books, Semiprecious has parts that readers like and parts that readers don't like. What this reader liked about this book is that Garnet persevered through being lonely, and being unpopular.If you have ever been new somewhere, you would know that it is not always pleasant to be new.Yet even though Garnet was new, and had a tendency to run off, she kept going.What I did not like about this book is that it was monotonous. Basically, it is the same thing every day with a few twists and turns.Garnet ran into troubles, she had a bad day, repeat day.But these monotonous things also made it more interesting when the exciting things happened.
Semiprecious is a good example of what some girls are going through in their lives.Garnet is a good girl with a relatively, bad life.But Garnet learned that she could get through it by willing herself to hold on just long enough for her dad to bring her and Opal home.I would tell anybody, to read Semiprecious. It is a great book and I think all tween-age girls would enjoy it.
Over all, Semiprecious is a good book and I enjoyed it.There were some parts that I didn't like but there were plenty that I did like.Garnet has learned an important lesson that this reviewer thinks everybody should learn: That when the going gets tough, the tough can get going.

I picked up "Semiprecious" at my local library without reading the back cover.
I thought it would be terrible, but to my surpise, Semiprecious is one of my favorite books.
All the recent books I've read, have been the same old same old.
But with the 1960 as the setting, it brings a completly new setting, and loveable characters that you can't help thinking about even after you closed the book at the last page.
And don't let the recomended ages fool you--- Semiprecious is a great read for anyone. ... Read more
