Excerpt: Oman is a country situated in Southwest Asia, bordering the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, and Persian Gulf, between Yemen and United Arab Emirates (UAE). Oman is located in the southeastern quarter of the Arabian Peninsula and, according to official estimates, covers a total land area of approximately 300,000 square kilometers; foreign observer estimates, however, are about 212,000 square kilometers. The land area is composed of varying topographic features: valleys and desert account for 82 percent of the land mass; mountain ranges, 15 percent; and the coastal plain, 3 percent. The sultanate is flanked by the Gulf of Oman, the Arabian Sea, and the Rub' al Khali (Empty Quarter) of Saudi Arabia, all of which contributed to Oman's isolation. Historically, the country's contacts with the rest of the world were by sea, which not only provided access to foreign lands but also linked the coastal towns of Oman. The Rub al Khali, difficult to cross even with modern desert transport, formed a barrier between the sultanate and the Arabian interior. The Al Hajar Mountains, which form a belt between the coast and the desert from the Musandam Peninsula (Ras Musandam) to the city of Sur at Oman's easternmost point, formed another barrier. These geographic barriers kept the interior of Oman free from foreign military encroachments. Geographic coordinates: Detailed map of Oman Topographic map of Oman.Natural features divide the country into seven distinct areas: Ruus al Jibal, including the northern Musandam Peninsula; the Al Batinah plain running southeast along the Gulf of Oman coast; the Oman interior behind the Al Batinah coast comprising the Al Hajar Mountains their foothills, and desert fringes; the coast fro...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=22318 ... This book is a study of the traditional relationships that exist in Oman between land and social organization, and how they have evolved. The author concentrates on the theme of aridity and, using the extensive literature of the 1200 year Olf Ibadi community to supplement his field work, shows how the techniques of water exploitation have influenced the country's social organization and its political ideology. The author shows how close the links are between Islamic ideology, land use and social organization. The book is valuable as a contribution to the human geography of Oman as well as to general knowledge of the Middle East. Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Oman," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Oman in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Oman when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Oman, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An ancient land of frankincense and dates
When I started reading this book, I knew nothing about The Sultanate of Oman except what I'd learned during my stamp-collecting years, and back then this country was known as Muscat and Oman. Before oil was discovered, Muscat and Oman was identified (if at all) as an exporter of frankincense and dates. It was mainly desert plus the big port city of Muscat, and alternately ruled by a sultan or an imam. The British Empire generally supported the sultan and helped out during border disputes with the Saudis and Yemenis.Inter-tribal conflict was the preferred method of entertainment.

Once the author works his way through the dynastic conflicts and endless tribal wars, a strong ruler emerges in 1970, after removing his father from the throne, and he is in time to divert some of Oman's oil revenue into projects for modernizing his state.Sultan Qaboos, who is also the current imam, is still the absolute ruler of Oman. The author is fulsome in his praise of Sultan Qaboos, who ended Oman's isolation from the rest of the world.

This book ends with a gallery of photographs of the various people of Oman, very much in the style of 'National Geographic' magazine. Most of the pictures were taken in the early decades of the 20th Century.

I found this book quite interesting once I'd made it through the long centuries of dynastic turmoil.

Calvin H. Allen, Jr. has also written "Oman: The Modernization of the Sultanate (Nations of the Contemporary Middle East)" and "Oman Under Qaboos: From Coup to Constitution, 1970-1996."

5-0 out of 5 stars About This Book
"Until the 1970s, Oman was an isolated, almost medieval kingdom, virtually unknown to the outside world. The 1970 palace coup that brought Sultan Qaboos b. Sa'id Al-Sa'id to power also brought Oman into the 20th century. Development programs made modernization a rapid process, and Oman's location at the netrance to the Straits of Hormuz gave the county an increasing importance to U.S. security interests...."

Product Description
This book is an account of the 1986 Royal Geographical Society expedition to the Wahiba Sands in Oman made by 30 scientists with the purpose of studying the people, animals and plants of a remarkable desert area about the size of Wales. The author tells of the preparations needed to get the project off the ground and the team's experiences in Oman, where part of its brief was to work closely with the local Bedu. As well as identifying new species of plants and insects, and using all the latest computer technology to study the formations of sand and forest, the team developed close ties with the Bedu communities, travelling across the sands by camel. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow, strategically important waterway between the Gulf of Oman in the southeast and the Persian Gulf. On the north coast is Iran and on the south coast is the United Arab Emirates and Musandam, an exclave of Oman. The strait at its narrowest is 54 kilometres (29 nmi) wide. It is the only sea passage to the open ocean for large areas of the petroleum-exporting Persian Gulf. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, an average of about 15 tankers carrying 16.5 to 17 million barrels of crude oil normally pass through the strait every day, making it one of the world's most strategically important choke points. This represents 40% of the world's seaborne oil shipments, and 20% of all world shipments. ... Read more

The desert is 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) long, and 500 kilometres (310 mi) wide, and is neither inhabited nor traversed by the Bedouins. After Pedro Páez's presence in the late Sixteenth Century, the first documented journeys by Westerners were made by Bertram Thomas in 1931 and St. John Philby in 1932. Excerpt: The Arabian Desert is a vast desert wilderness stretching from Yemen to the Persian Gulf and Oman to Jordan and Iraq. It occupies most of the Arabian Peninsula with an area of 222 070 square kilometers. At its center is the Rub'al-Khali, one of the largest continuous bodies of sand in the world. Gazelles, oryx, sand cats, and spiny-tailed lizards are just some of the desert-adapted species that survive in this extreme environment, which features everything from red dunes to deadly quicksand. The climate is extremely dry, and temperatures oscillate between extreme heat and seasonal night time freezes. It is part of the Deserts and xeric shrublands biome and the Palearctic ecozone. This ecoregion holds little biodiversity, although a few endemic plants grow here. Many species, such as the striped hyena, jackal and honey badger have become extinct in this area due to hunting, human encroachment and habitat destruction. Other species have been successfully re-introduced, such as the sand gazelle, and are protected at a number of reserves. Overgrazing by livestock, off-road driving, human destruction of habitat are the main threats to this desert ecoregion. Type : hyper aridDetailed description : Most of the Rub'al-Khali is classified as hyper-arid.
