Description:
Concern over the impact of extreme heat upon human health has increased in recent years. Though much research has evaluated the relationships between the two, few studies have attempted to quantify this vulnerability on a sub-metropolitan area level. Using a Geographic Information System (GIS), ambulance calls for a 4-year period from 1999 to 2002 was analyzed in relation to extreme heat for the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Ambulance response calls were plotted on a map to understand the spatial variability of where calls significantly increase above normal levels during oppressively hot days. Census data were used to identify the demographic characteristics of the population within these areas. Statistical tests were also used to assess the degree of correlation among different meteorological variables and the ambulance call data. Over the 4-year period, the average number of ambulance calls increases by 10 percent over normal levels on those days considered oppressively hot. A change in the spatial pattern of calls also occurs on such days. The urban core, with the greatest density of calls, experiences the greatest absolute percentage increase in calls from normal on oppressive days. However, it is some areas of the city located along the shore of Lake Ontario, where a high majority of the population goes to cool down, that demonstrate the greatest percentage increase in calls. Other areas of the city exhibiting an increase in calls are located within industrial and recreational areas. ... Read more

Product Description
This thesis explores the potential contribution thatcould be made to core area revitalization throughthe integration of outdoor recreation planning, ecological planning, and urban planning. Therevitalization of urban centres, and especiallythose of mid-size cities, has typically beenexplored through policy planning, economic vitality, and urban design. An area which often has beenneglected is that of urban outdoor recreation, specifically recreation that is carried out in anecologically compatible fashion. The thesis examinestheoretical and practical approaches in outdoorrecreation planning, ecological planning, and urbanplanning, addressing any gaps and insufficienciesthat seem to hinder the integration of the threedisciplines in practical terms. The core area in thecity of Waterloo serves as a case study to examinethe feasibility of integrating ecological planning, outdoor recreation planning, and urban planning. This research indicates that ecological planning isa versatile and responsive planning approach whereasoutdoor recreation planning and urban planning seemdisconnected from each other. ... Read more

Excerpt: Scarborough (pronounced ) (2006 Census 602,575) is the eastern part of the City of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was named in 1796 by Elizabeth Simcoe, who was inspired by the Scarborough Bluffs, which reminded her of the white cliffs near her home in England. Initially a collection of rural villages, it has become a diverse urban community. Over 200 years it grew from a township to a city, but has been part of the eastern portion of Toronto since 1998. The name "Scarborough" is still used by local residents and recognized by Canada Post. Scarborough has characteristics of a suburb of old Toronto, but retains much of its own character and flavour. Certain neighbourhoods in Scarborough are popular destinations for new immigrants to Canada, who bring their own culture to Scarborough. It includes some remote areas such as the Scarborough Bluffs and the Rouge River Valley. A journalist describing Toronto's suburbs commented on Scarborough's "lush greenery" and declared it to be greener than any other part of Toronto. The area was named after Scarborough, Yorkshire, England by Elizabeth Simcoe, the wife of John Graves Simcoe, the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada. The bluffs along Scarborough's Lake Ontario shores reminded her of the limestone cliffs in Scarborough, England. On 4 August 1793, she wrote in her diary, "The shore is extremely bold, and has the appearance of chalk cliffs, but I believe they are only white sand. They appeared so well that we talked of building a summer residence there and calling it Scarborough." Before that, the area was named Glasgow, after the Scottish community. Scarborough has acquired several nicknames. The most popular is Scarberia, a portmant...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=310479 ... Read more

View from Mount Royal, 1902 Saint Jacques Street (formerly Saint James Street), in 1910Archaeological evidence demonstrates that various nomadic First Nations native people occupied the island of Montreal for at least 2,000 years before the arrival of Europeans. By the year 1000 CE, they had started to cultivate maize. Within a few hundred years, they had built fortified villages. The St. Lawrence Iroquoians, a people distinct from the Iroquois nations of the Haudenosaunee who originated mostly in present-day New York, established the village of Hochelaga at the foot of Mount Royal centuries before the French arrived. Archeologists have found evidence of their habitation there and at other locations in the valley since at least the 1300s. The French explorer Jacques Cartier visited Hochelaga on October 2, 1535, and estimated the population of the native people at Hochelaga to be "over a thousand". Seventy years later, French explorer Samuel de Champlain reported that the St. Lawrence Iroquoians and their settlements had disappeared altogether from the St. Lawrence valley, possibly due to outmigration, epidemic of European diseases, or intertribal wars. In 1611 Champlain established a fur trading post on the Island of Montreal, on a site initially named La Place Royale. At the confluence of Petite Rivière and St. Lawrence River, it is where present-day Pointe-à-Callière stands. In 1639, Jérôme Le Royer de La Dauversière obtained the Seigneurial title to the Island of Montreal in the name of the Société de Notre-Dame de Montréal to establish a Roman Catholic mission for evangelizing natives.
