5-0 out of 5 stars Easy reading
I couldn't put the book down! This book has helped me deal with my 12 year old defiant step-daughter.At times, my other children can be defiant, too, and I can use some of the same techniques for them.

5-0 out of 5 stars odd
This Book is set up simply, and very detailed...with many examples of both what to expect of behavior from children diagnosed with ODD and how to handle different scenarios.Thank You so very much.

This is an outstanding book.I am a NYC child psychiatrist who first discovered this book while completing my child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Bellevue Hospital and the NYU Child Study Center.I have recommended it to many parents and clinicians struggling with severely oppositional children.

4-0 out of 5 stars For someone else
I ordered this book at the request of someone else. I did not hear yet whether this book has been helpful or not

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book so far..
We have a 14 year old daughter who(in our opinion)has been oppositional since birth, and she is currrently seeing a therapist once or twice/month.
Her grades have been up & down wildly since 4th or 5th grade, but they really hit a new low this schoolyear. Before we started working closely with our school, and the "at-risk" teacher, we were at our wits-end with our daughter. I ordered 3 books on kids/teens with O.D.D., this one being the best one. The author is kind of old-school, but that's the way it should be, with the kids trying to run everything these days. He has a no-nonsense approach to dealing with your O.D.D. child. Highly suggest this book. ... Read more

Product Description
This book offers clinicians an effective method ofdiagnosing, managing, and treating oppositional, resistant, anddisruptive older children and adolescents. Dr. Bustamante understandsoppositional states as an expression of the teenager's uncertaintyabout his own identity and alienation from his true self. Attempts tocurb rebellion that rely solely on firm behavioral limits will fail, because they thwart rather than promote development and disregard thereal meaning of the disruptive behavior. The author's approach is asensitive and creative alternative to treating this difficultpopulation, one that offers hope and attainable goals. It includes amethod for engaging the adolescent in a cooperative assessment of hisown personality and problems, a three-step intervention to reverse thecore symptoms of ODD, and a parenting component based on naturalconsequences. Special intervention strategies for school failure, excessive aggression, negative peer influences, and druginvolvement are presented. The heart of the treatment involves formingan alliance with the adolescent and turning failure intogrowth. Bustamante's commitment to this challenge, his compassion forhis clients, and his clinical skill combine to make this a compellingand essential book for those working with adolescents in general anddefiant youth in particular. ... For parents who are exhausted, frightened by their disruptive teens, for parents who are lost, devastated by their children's behaviors, for those who have gone the traditional therapy route only to find themselves more alientated than ever from their children--and broke to boot-- Eduardo Bustamante's book is a must. This is a book that offers new and effective approaches to adolescent angst, approaches that WORK, that make way for reconciliation between parent and teen. 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, someone has shined the light in a dark and lonely place!
My ODD children (yes, plural-I have two!) are adults now and until we read this book, we had no idea WHAT was making our family dynamic so out of control.Chapter Four with the clinical definition truly set us free! Both have found amazing doctors who have given them life-changing, personality transforming medications. They call them their happy pills and both are still exactly who they were, just better!Thank you, Nancy! We know love in our family in a deeper way because of you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just the type of book I was looking for!
My son was diagnosed with ODD in the 2nd grade. After 7 years of behavior modification, it quit working. At 14, the adolescent hormones have begun and just as other children are becoming more defiant at this age, my son, as usual, went to the extreme. He became uncontrollable. At one point this past summer, I thought all hope was lost for his future. Thankfully, with God's help, things are looking better. The struggle is not over, but he is back home, attending weekly therapy sessions with a therapist who has worked with ODD cases (children and adult) for over 20 years, and we are in the process of neuro-psych testing to rule out aspergers, ADHD, depression, and others. I thank God everyday that he is safe and has never been ajudicated. I'm told that the love, patience, and attempts to understand my son without labeling him (children are children, not their flaws!)have been great helps to him over the years. I constantly remind him that my love for him is unconditional. I have also told him that we all make mistakes, it's how we handle those mistakes that matters. I still have never heard the words, "I love you, Mom" uttered from his mouth, but I know he does from the few glances of thoughtfulness he gives me from time to time. When reading this book, I decided to highlight anything I had experienced. I was amazed when my highlighter ran out of ink. This book gave me hope that I can help my son through these teenage years, trying by themselves, but more so for him because of the ODD. Thank you Nancy Hagemeyer for writing the book I wish I had 7 years ago!

2-0 out of 5 stars practical strategies needed
Although you can certainly feel this Mom's pain there are very few practical strategies listed for dealing with ODD either at home or in the educational setting.I was extremely disappointed in this book for those reasons. She stated she had a wonderful family, doctors, teachers but very little on what they actually did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational
I loved the book and have shared with co-workers, friends and family. This mom's journal parallels my own 14 yr journey with my ODD son and through her words gave me that little boost of reassurance that someone out there understands.
I didn't share the book for factual, diagnostic information or how to's, I shared because it's real and from the heart.Since no one else sees what takes place within the home, it is very difficult (for me) to put into words or explain to others why one I'm always so beat down and operating below capacity. The author's words help paint that picture so others might understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful but wanting more
This book was a breath of fresh air in comparison to those written by therapists who have only "treated" other people's children instead of actually living with a child with ODD.Having a child with ODD I can relate to this book almost entirely. However, I really was hoping for more examples of experiences that the mother and son went through---especially at school to see, if at all, any solutions that came about due to this behavior at school. This, to me, is the most frustrating of all experiences with ODD because it is so hard to help out with kid's behavior once they are not in your presence.

I LOVED the teacher tips and tips for parents and thought they were right on target and will work most of the time. This is a great book for parents to read to see what options are out there for their ODD child but I just wanted more situations to try to relate to is all. ... Read more

Product Description
Recent decades have seen a steady rise in the incidence of antisocial behavior in youth. Possible direct consequences aside, such behavior is predictive of chronic emotional, educational, vocational, and emotional impairment that is associated with hundreds of millions of dollars in costs to overtaxed mental health, social services, special education, and juvenile justice systems.

Written by an eminent group of international experts, Conduct and Oppositional Defiant Disorders: Epidemiology, Risk Factors, and Treatment offers the first comprehensive cutting-edge overview of all the major aspects of conduct disorder (CD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) in children and adolescents. It is organized into three sections. The first summarizes classification and assessment, epidemiology and comorbidity, as well as course and outcome. The second examines factors that put children and adolescents at risk to develop CD and ODD: contextual, familial/genetic, and neuropsychological and neuroendocrine. The third presents numerous empirically supported approaches to prevention and treatment. An epilogue reviews recent progress and unresolved questions, and suggests needs for future research. Special attention is devoted to gender and developmental pathways in etiology, symptom expression, courses, and outcomes.

This volume will be crucial reading for all mental health professionals whose work involves them with these exceptionally difficult clients.

4-0 out of 5 stars Angry, And Perhaps Rightly So
Dr. Neil Bernstein's useful work on the counseling of oppositional teenagers is noteworthy in its humility, for a start. Clinical success, in the author's view, is established the old fashioned way: you have to work for it. In his introduction Bernstein confesses to a basic distrust of quick fixes for teenage problems, particularly those promulgated on the lecture/workshop circuit. He keeps a balanced head on the etiology of oppositional defiance, recognizing that disorders of mood, substance abuse, and dysfunctional families of origin, to name a few factors, must be given their day in court during the diagnostic phase of treatment. He is well read in adolescent development and recognizes that the teen years are inherently about distancing and defiance, in some way, shape, or form.

If one were to label the author's clinical approach, perhaps the Rogerian style comes closest to capturing this practitioner's persona. Without losing sight of the nuts and bolts, Bernstein seems to find his success in establishing empathy and trust with his young clients. The "opposition" of teenagers is directed against the systems that they perceive as having failed them: family, school, and the peer community. The defensive attitude of such youth is both a mask for their pain and insurance against further hurt. It is encouraging to see that a lengthy chapter has been devoted to family intervention [though some family specialists will inevitably argue that the family organism is the whole enchilada where childhood disorders are concerned.]

Bernstein's clinical examples-and they are numerous-appear to be drawn primarily from individual therapy sessions, i.e., without parents or others in the process. If this reflects the demographics of his paying clientele, then he must have a remarkable gift for developing engagement with his young clients, and he would apparently have enough leisure to plumb his clients' psyches at a pace that does not engender defensiveness. But aside from the wearisome issue of whether managed health care or the client's own limited resources put limitations on a style that calls for protracted contact and trust building, the one nagging question left hanging in this work is the role of the parents in the client's treatment. In Chapter 12 the author provides a substantive commentary on family therapy, noting among other things that parents frequently repeat the mistakes of their own mothers and fathers, implying that many oppositional clients have plenty at home to be oppositional about. Is such therapy without the parents the clinical equivalent of rowing with one oar?I would summarize Bernstein's position on parental participation in therapy as "optimal but not necessary." As a practitioner myself, unless I have compelling reasons to the contrary, I subscribe to the philosophy of the seasoned general who brought a long time rival into his inner circle on the grounds that "I'd rather have him inside my tent [urinating] out than outside my tent [urinating] in." Somewhat surprising to me is the desire of many of my ODD clients to have a parent in therapy with them, perhaps their way of telling me why they are so angry.

In the final analysis, this is a work from the traditional psychoanalytic school that extols the time proven methods of human respect and client interaction. It is an excellent didactic exposition, an opportunity for a practitioner to ask himself, "Do I sound like that?" There is an abundance of common sense and a minimum of psycho-jargon that makes this work accessible to teachers and many parents as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Treating the Unmanageable Adolescent
I've been working with difficult teenagers for over ten years and read this book hoping to gain new insights and skills into working with this population.By far, it is the best book I have ever read on this topic. It is explicit, practical, and offers numerous suggestions for addressing the multiple problems that this population faces.I have found it extremely useful in my practice because of the easily applicable techniques Dr. Bernstein presents, and his concrete suggestions about how to implement them.Dr. Bernstein shares many examples from his clinical practice which parents and clinicians alike should find helpful.Susan Gordon, Ph.D.

3-0 out of 5 stars an excellent guide to practical management
I was startled to read an earlier online review of this book becasue it wasso much at varience with my own thoughts about Dr. Bersteins book. I am a psycholgist witha Ph.D. and 25 years experience working in clinicalsettings and I have never before encountered a book on conduct disordersthat was so clearly the work of an experienced clinician and so deeplyrooted in his experience. Bernstein's clinical examples could have comefrom my office or those of other psychologists I know and work with. Hissuggestions and illlustrations ofhis work with his patients was bothreassuring and familiar as well as stimulating and provocative. If youchave to go out and work in the trenches with oppositional and conductdisordered, Dr. Bernstien's book is a very handy item to have along

1-0 out of 5 stars A disappointing cursory treatment of the disorder
I purchased Dr. Bernstein's book as part of some fact finding for mymaster's thesis in Special Education.I did not expect the book to haveall the answers, but was hopeful that there would be a good body ofinformation that would prove helpful.

I was very disappointed.I foundthe introductory chapters to be a cursory tratment of the disruptivedisorders.Seldom was there a delineation between conduct problems andnormal development. There was little information of how antisocialbehavior differentiates from conduct disorder. There were many blanketstatements that were not sufficiently supported with evidence. The casestudies were one sided, and I believe, not fully representative of theintracies of the personalities of children.

I was particularly dismayedat the suggestion thatthe population of conduct disordered children was"likely to have a narrow range of interests" and spending a fewminutes a week glancing through "People" and "RollingStone" was a sufficient way to be informed of their culture.Thegreatest disservice to these children is to take their minds for granted insuch a way.

As for the information on the theraputic process andtreatment, I did not find this helpful. Most of the principles discussedhere are presented in a great book, "The Skilled Helper" byGerard Egan.A book which takes a much more compassionate, humble approachto the helping process.

I had hopes for this book.I went into it withan open mind, willing to learn. I was bitterly disappointed with it'smyopic approach to this population of special needs children and youth.Icould not recommend it even as an introduction to the subject. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Oppositional defiant disorder is described by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as an ongoing pattern of disobedient, hostile and defiant behavior toward authority figures which goes beyond the bounds of normal childhood behavior. People who have it may appear very stubborn. To meet DSM-IV-TR criteria, certain factors must be taken into account. First, the defiance must interfere with the child's ability to function in school, home, or the community. Second, the defiance cannot be the result of another disorder, such as the more serious conduct disorder, depression, anxiety, or a sleep disorder such as DSPS. Third, the child's problem behaviors have been happening for at least six months. The diagnostic criteria for this disorder are as follows: ... Read more

Product Description
Foreword by George Addair Ph.D.

Raising Humane Beings is the finest book on raising children ever written. Rarely in life does a reader find a single book that sufficiently covers an entire subject. After reviewing Jane's book I found myself thinking differently, for such a book will shift your thinking, and you, like me, will never be the same. I am pleased to endorse both her and her masterful book.

If you don't read this book now, you will in time. If you do not agree with it, time will prove to you that Jane was right. If you reread it twenty years from now you will be surprised at how advanced this book was, and you will then realize it as one of the greatest tools of the decades, not just for our children, but for our world. This book is the finest on this subject that I have ever seen, and it deserves a high place of honor in the world today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST-READ for all parents...a terrific book for everyone in general.
We need more healthcare providers like Jane Fendelman who can teach us ways to give our kids the unconditional love and acceptance our children so desperately need from us. This insightful book has been an inspiration to me in my quest not only to be a better parent, but to be a stronger, happier person. Most importantly, this book dispels any misconception that parental authority is in any way undermined when we treat our children with respect and dignity. The author gives wonderful illustrations to show us how we can strike a balance in our lives that yields far-reaching benefits to our relationships with our children. "Raising Humane Beings" is a wonderful gift for any one you know, not just parents. I can't recommend it highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars best parenting book
Easily one of the best books I would recommend to any parent.Essential reading for anyone planning to BE a parent as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even More Relevant
I find "Raising Humane Beings" even more relevant then when I first read it several years ago, as psychiatrist, physicians, school administrators and teachers seem more intent each year to promote medication as the solution to behavior and learning differences.

4-0 out of 5 stars Raising Humane Beings
I went looking for my copy of this book and realized I'd loaned it out and never got it back. In other words, when I originally read it, I thought it was good enough to share with other parents because it is not so much a "parental fix-it" book but a parental philosphy, one that (from what I've seen) is fairly unique on the shelves of parenting books.
Many parenting books are the "do this, say that, and you'll whip your kids into shape" type, but Jane's work is an earnest attempt to help parents find a constructive balance between love and discipline, nuture and structure, both within themselves and in their parenting, so as to be better able to guide their children. In a round-about way, this is a book that requires something of parents for the sake of their kids. The only reason I haven't given it five stars if that most all of these books are anecdotal and can't cover every parental challenge, and this one is no exception, but for some people, this book will be an eye-opener and so is a must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars grow yourself up
Raising Humane Beings is a grow yourself up book, I think applicable to everybody parent or not. Jane's sound instruction creates a bridge to a new way of living for the health of your home, family and our world! ... Read more

Description:
We studied error-related negativity (ERN) and error positivity (Pe) during a discrimination task in 319 unmedicated children divided into subtypes of ADHD (Not-ADHD/inattentive/combined), learning disorder (Not-LD/reading/math/reading+math), and oppositional defiant disorder. Response-locked ERPs contained a frontocentral ERN and posterior Pe. Error-related negativity and positivity exhibited larger amplitude and later latency than corresponding waves for correct responses matched on reaction time. ADHD did not affect performance on the task. The ADHD/combined sample exceeded controls in ERN amplitude, perhaps reflecting patients' adaptive monitoring efforts. Compared with controls, subjects with reading disorder and reading+math disorder performed worse on the task and had marginally more negative correct-related negativities. In contrast, Pe/Pc was smaller in children with reading+math disorder than among subjects with reading disorder and Not-LD participants; this nonspecific finding is not attributable to error processing. The results reflect anomalies in error processing in these disorders but further research is needed to address inconsistencies in the literature. ... Read more
