5-0 out of 5 stars A Gift for my son in law
My daughter and son in law had recently moved to Oregon and not being very familar with the area, I thought this book would provide them with a starting point as to what to do and where to go. A report from them indicates this book was very helpful and interesting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing in Kindle
One of the selling points of this volume is its presentation of rare antique photographs. In the sample, at least half of the images render very faintly of the kindle screen. It appears the originals were sepiatone and not converted in any way for the kindle edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars New oregon Book Review
This book is intersting espically about old oregon areas of long ago and no longer around.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun read!
What a great read!I like short, fun, informative, useful and useless books like this sometimes. It is like reading small town newspapers from all over the state. It was a delight to read about some of the places that I had visited as a child. Some are still around (places at the beach) and some are not (Lambert Gardens). The stories are interesting and fun enough to reel in teenagers as well as adults. I mean, who can resist Jake the Alligator Man?My only regret is that I can't find a similar book for Washington.

5-0 out of 5 stars My new companion!
I love this book! And, clearly, for Mr. Engeman, writing it was a labor of love..it shines through on every page.I have never been much of a "place booster": You know, the type who says, "our state (or city, etc.) is the best!" As a native Oregonian, I realize that my state, like all others, comprises beauty, wonder, the mundane, ugliness, and everything in between. From the indescribable Columbia Gorge to the strip mall, we have it.

But The Oregon Companion helps me see our state with new eyes.It contains over 400 pages of historical information, trivia, wonderful photographs (I could swear I saw some of those exact scenes from the back window of my grandparents' car!) and revelation. Its alphabetical arrangement makes it easy to access exactly what you're looking for, and boldfaced words indicate cross-references within the book itself.

The book's subtitle says it all: this is no dry historical tome.Rather it is written with wit and verve by someone who knows what he is talking about and has a blast doing it.I look forward to many happy hours of reading Mr. Engeman's take on areas I am familiar with, as well as learning what I don't know (yet). And like all great works, it inspires me to want to learn more.

And, while I am sure Mr. Engeman did not have this as his goal, he has solved my gift-giving dilemmas for years to come: it is hard to imagine a friend or family member who would NOT love this book!

Right now I feel like getting in my car with this book and just driving all over Oregon to see what I have been missing.

I only wish every state should be so lucky as to have a "companion" like this one.Perhaps with this inspiration, they will! ... Read more

Product Description
Netting the Sun offers a carefully crafted diversity of natural and human stoies from a landscape seemingly empty and forlorn to passing casual travelers. This surprising interpretation of south central Oregon's botony, geology, wildlife, ethnography, and history reveals what a truly special place the high desert is.

Born in the sagebrush community of Lakeview in 1941, the author moved on following high school graduation. But as with many native sons and daughters from America's out-of-the-way places, the urge to return to his roots proved irresistible in middle age.

"I endeavored to write this collection about the Oregon desert because of my childhood there," says Adams, "but also because it is a place of startling mystery, subdued danger, and beauty." ... Read more

Excerpt: Oregon Field Guide is a weekly television program produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting focusing on recreation, the outdoors, and environmental issues in the state of Oregon. Part of the Oregon zeitgeist, it is produced and hosted by Steve Amen. Named for the field guides used to identify plants, animals, and natural phenomenon, the wide-ranging series covers Oregon natural history, outdoor recreation, conservation, agriculture, rural life, and other local subjects. Produced with deep narratives rather than short segments, 13 half-hour and one full hour episodes are shown per year. Oregon Field Guide started as a partnership between Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. It first aired in 1990 with the impact of drift netting for tuna on dolphins, The show was kept during major state budget cuts in 2003 that affected OPB. In that year, the show budget was $300,000, with about 60% from two corporate sponsors and funds collected through pledges. The show was narrated and produced by Jim Newman for 20 years. Newman produced over 250 Oregon Field Guide segments, and was brought on when Steve Amen got the greenlight on the series. Amen who was born in Wyoming in 1952 and attended Portland State University, receiving a degree in photography. Amen produced an award-winning Frontline episode, titled "To The Last Fish", in 1991, and has had three hip replacements since the show began. While the show has been very popular, it was on the bubble for the first few seasons, and its form was compared to PM Magazine. The show had a 6.1 rating in the Portland market in 1994, receiving a 9 share, meaning reruns of the show bea...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=26356709 ... Read more

Chapters: Lloyd District, Portland, Oregon. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 235. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt:The Lloyd District is a primarily commercial neighborhood in the North and Northeast sections of Portland, Oregon. It is named after Ralph Lloyd (18751953), a California rancher, oilman, and real estate developer who moved to and started the development of the area. The Lloyd District is bounded by the Willamette River on the west, NE Broadway on the north, NE 18th Ave. on the east, and Interstate 84 on the south. Adjacent neighborhoods are Eliot and Irvington to the north, Sullivan's Gulch (with which it slightly overlaps) on the east, Kerns on the south, and Old Town Chinatown (via the Steel and Broadway bridges over the Willamette) to the west. The Lloyd District viewed from the northwest. The area west of Interstate 5 is called the Rose Quarter, home of the Rose Garden Arena and Memorial Coliseum. Prior to urban renewal in the 1950s, this area was an African American residential community, including many who had lost their homes in the Vanport flood of 1948. Most of the district lies east of I-5, where the Oregon Convention Center and Lloyd Center Mall are the principal landmarks. The area includes restaurants, shops, hotels, movie theatres, condominiums and apartments, and office buildings (the largest being the Lloyd Center Tower, standing at 20 floors and 290 feet). The neighborhood is bike friendly and accessible using public transportation. TriMet buses and MAX trains provide frequent service in the district. It is served by all three lines of the MAX light rail system. Four Blue Line and Red Line stations (Rose Quarter Transit Center, Convention Center, Northeast 7th Ave, and Lloyd Center/Northeast 11th Ave) and one Yellow Line station (Interstate/Rose Quart...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=6628379 ... Excerpt:Dipnet fishing at Celilo Falls in the 1950sCelilo Falls (Wyam, meaning "echo of falling water" or "sound of water upon the rocks," in several native languages) was a tribal fishing area on the Columbia River, just east of the Cascade Mountains, on what is today the border between the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The name refers to a series of cascades and waterfalls on the river, as well as to the native settlements and trading villages that existed there in various configurations for 15,000 years. Celilo was the oldest continuously inhabited community on the North American continent until 1957, when the falls and nearby settlements were submerged by the construction of The Dalles Dam. Native salmon fishermen at Celilo Falls. Russell Lee, September 1941.The main waterfall, known variously as Celilo Falls, The Chutes, Great Falls, or Columbia Falls , consisted of three sections: a cataract, called Horseshoe Falls or Tumwater Falls; a deep eddy, the Cul-de-Sac; and the main channel. These features were formed by the Columbia River's relentless push through basalt narrows on the final leg of its journey to the Pacific Ocean. Frequently more than a mile (1.6 km) in width, the river was squeezed here into a width of only 140 feet (43 m). The seasonal flow of the Columbia changed the height of the falls over the course of a year. At low water the drop was about 20 feet (6.1 m). In 1839, Modeste Demers investigated the area in some detail and described not just one fall but a great man...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1531942 ... Read more
