Product Description

The political culture of Oregon has long had a reputation for innovative policy, maverick politicians, and independent political thought, but instead of using the term “progressive” to describe the state’s political leanings, the editors of Oregon Politics and Government believe a more accurate descriptor would be “schizophrenic.” Oregon Politics and Government provides not only an overview of the state’s politics and government; it also explains how the divide between progressives and conservative populists defines Oregon politics today.

Early in the state’s history, reformers championed many causes: the initiative and referendum process for setting public policy, the recall of public officials, the direct election of U.S. senators, and women’s suffrage. Since then, the state has asserted control over beaches, imposed strict land-use laws, created an innovative regional government, introduced voting through the mail, allowed for physician-assisted suicide, and experimented with universal healthcare. Despite this list of accomplishments, however, Oregon is divided between two competing visions: one that is tied to progressive politics and another that is committed to conservative populism. While the progressive side supports a strong and active government, the conservative populist side seeks a smaller government, lower taxes, fewer restrictions on private property, and protection for traditional social values. The struggle between these two forces drives Oregon politics and policies today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oregon Legislative History Captured
The incredible history of the Oregon legislature emerges from this book.Readers learn of the early legislative bodies during Oregon's territorial days and the bitter partisan battles over issues such as slavery and citizenship to racial minorities. We learn of some of the important and often amusing political characters through Oregon's legislative history as well as the effects of such measures as the poll tax and other taxes designed to harm members of racial minorities.
19th century political power in Oregon rested with business leaders representing railroads, utilities, and banks.Readers learn the interesting historical fact that Republican legislative votes were for $4,000 per legislator while Democratic legislative votes went for $3,000 per legislator. As Republicans occupied a higher scale of living, they cost more to bribe.
Still, legislative action was not a given. One entire legislative session ended without a single bill passed.
Some more recent Oregon legislative tales will amuse readers, such as the time an Oregon legislator dropped a bottle of liquid from a railroad effluent line and let the smell fill the House chambers. In another instance, a sleeping legislator had his shoe laces tied to his desk and then was called upon by the Speaker to arise from his desk.
People wishing to learn about life in a state legislature will enjoy this book.It is good to see some people capturing these pieces of history. If we can't learn from the past, we can at least enjoy it, as readers will from this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Oregon's Charles Sprague: Editor, Governor, Leader
In "An Editor for Oregon," Floyd McKay provides a thoroughly-researched, eminently readable account of Sprague's life and times. McKay, a journalism professor at Western Washington University, brings unquestioned qualifications to this work. Before entering the academic world, he spent many years as a working journalist, both in broadcast and print. His first job was on the Oregon Statesman, working under Sprague, its owner and publisher. But though his admiration for his subject is clear, it's also a straightforward and honest account.

McKay traces Sprague's birth and youth in Kansas, his migration to Washington state and the influence the Progressive movement had on shaping his political outlook, his entry into the newspaper business, and his arrival in Oregon in 1925. A few years later he acquired the Statesman, a newspaper from the state's pioneer era that had fallen on difficult times. Sprague grew quickly in stature and influence, yet his nomination and election to the governorship over incumbent Charles Martin in 1938, only 13 years after he had come to the state, was something of a surprise.

His single term as governor was dominated by the state's response to the outbreak of World War II. In 1942,the same voters who had embraced Sprague only four years earlier turned their backs on him, ousting him in the Republican primary. Although a competent governor, Sprague's time in office turned out to be only a prelude to his greatest service to the state. For the next 25 years, with his front page column "It Seems To Me" and on the Statesman's editorial page, Sprague evolved into the most widely-read and respected opinion-maker in the state. Yet his active public service was not at an end; he served for a time as an alternate delegate to the United Nations.

"An Editor for Oregon" provides not only a compressive look at Sprague's life and career, but a history of the state's political evolution from the Depression through the sixties. It's a first-rate work.--William C. Hall ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat informative, but lacking in details.
As a professional, I found the book to be somewhat illuminating. For example, I understood why a colleague in another part of the state insisted that I prescribe certain drugs to a patient who needed them, rathen thenhim, himself. However, at most parts, the details are far too discrete. This leads to speculation, which is unfair to both the professional and thepublic. To say that the professional is required to have psychiatric carewhile practicing medicine without details, opens up all sorts ofspeculation that could harm the doctor - patient relationshipunnecessarily. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 1st rate biography
Over the past 25 years I have read dozens of biographies. Most are not much more than a chronological listings of a person's accomplishments with little depth or analysis. This is one of the few biographies I have read that helps us understand the person which is what a real biography should do. But it is more than a biography. It helps us understand the life and the times of Tom McCall. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to get to know Tom McCall, Oregon political history of the mid 20th century and the environmental movement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tom McCall's Story Is Oregon's Story
More than two decades after his death, almost three decades after he left the governor's office, Tom McCall remains the defining figure of Oregon politics. It was during his tenure in office (1967-1975) that Oregon gained its reputation as a national leader in innovative public policy.

The McCall era saw Oregon protect virtually all of its beaches for public use; adopt the first bottle bill in the nation; clean up the Willamette River; adopt the country's first statewide land-use planning system; and much more. Although many of these concepts did not originate with McCall, he was the catylist and provided the leadership to make them a reality.

This era is brilliantly chronicled by Brent Walth in "Fire At Eden's Gate." Walth, a reporter for the Eugene Register-Guard, and now The Oregonian, knows the state and its leadership well, and this allows him to tell the McCall story with comprehensiveness and clarity. But this is more than a political biography; Walth also chronicles the story of McCall's celebrated family (including grandfather Thomas W. Lawson, "the Copper King"), his path to the governor's office, and his sometimes troubled personal life.

Anyone interested in understanding Oregon public life in the second half of the 20th century should enjoy and benefit from reading this well-crafted biography.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where have all the Tom McCall's gone??
This biography of the modern day father of Oregon, makes this native long for days past. For days when Oregon was a leader on the national politcla/cultural/social scene.

Walth does an excellent job detailing not only the political successes of one of Oregon's greatest politicians, but also of the man's personal shortcomings.

I am not certain how much appeal this book will have to non-Oregonian's or people who are unfamiliar with the Pacific Northwest, but I feel that it should be required reading by all students of political science attending Oregon universities.

Our state legislators who are constantly invoking McCall's name and legacy to advance their own political gains, would do well to read this biography. Our elected officials of today pale in comparison to the individual giants of years past.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oregonians Explained
I am a Native Oregonian living on the east coast and this book helped me understand why I feel like a fish out of water in the midst of uncontrolled suburban sprawl, minimal recycling facilities, and chemical pollution violations are repeatedly ignored by local politicians.
Mr. Walth's book was exciting to read.I recommend it to anyone seeking to understand Oregonians and why we're so proud of the place we call home.Brent Walth tells the story of how Tom McCall gave us that pride.

5-0 out of 5 stars biography equally about Oregon as it is about McCall
Deserves a place in every hotel and bed/breakfast gift shop across Oregon -- for visitors to the Pacific Northwest to pick up. Walth tells the McCallstory and in doing so coaches the reader about the things Oregonians arethe most passionate about. Most of us cannot travel to another state andname their most famous governor -- yet McCall's legacy is often mentionedby domestic and international visitors to Oregon. ...
