4-0 out of 5 stars Still a classic
A good book overall, teaming with updated references and indispensable for the working organic chemist, graduate student, or advanced undergraduate.

Unfortunately, there is not much material on organometallic chemistry, which has gained in prominence in terms of recent synthetic methods. Also, there is a noticeable decline in editorial quality between the recent editions (5th and 6th) and previous editions.Schemes have been redrawn in ChemDraw, but some are poorly rendered, and there are missing formal charges, etc., as well as typos in the main text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleased
The book arrived on time and in the condition indicated.Pleasure to do business with.

2-0 out of 5 stars eh
i always thought this book was overrated. it's just not a text you can sit down, relax, and enjoy. it's definitely a reference text, and for a reference text, it's definitely not the first one I go to.

5-0 out of 5 stars 6th March is an excellent buy
It is very difficult to rewrite reviews for 6th edition of the "March". Classical flagships among textbooks and reference books in organic chemistry, unbeatable. With 7000 new refernces it brings unbelievable 25k reference citations, very well organized on the bottom of the pages. Excellent indexes, very good cross view between 5th edition and 6th edition aligning chapters of different numbering, perfect drawings made in CamSoft ChemDraw, etc. etc. As the text and accompanying material is polished and polished edition to edition, it is very difficult to do anything else but to praise this excellent reference book, which hardly could be omitted in any chemical laboratory. Not only that but hardcover book of 2357 pages for $73 at Amazon is not only a good book but also a good buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a Bad Book
This book is good, but if I didn't have my teacher alongside me explaining some things, I would definitely be lost. I also find myself going online to look for clarifications, because either the section is complicated to understand or too simple to understand properly. You should definitely get the solutions manual for this book- its very helpful when it comes time to answer problems!

Product Description
This is the first modern textbook, written in the 21st century, to make explicit the many connections between physical organic chemistry and critical fields such as organometallic chemistry, materials chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, and biochemistry. In the latter part of the 20th century, the field of physical organic chemistry went through dramatic changes, with an increased emphasis on noncovalent interactions and their roles in molecular recognition, supramolecular chemistry, and biology; the development of new materials with novel structural features; and the use of computational methods. Contemporary chemists must be just as familiar with these newer fields as with the more established classical topics. This completely new landmark text is intended to bridge that gap. In addition to covering thoroughly the core areas of physical organic chemistry – structure and mechanism – the book will escort the practitioner of organic chemistry into a field that has been thoroughly updated . The foundations and applicabilities of modern computational methods are also developed. Written by two distinguished researchers in this field, Modern Physical Organic Chemistry can serve as a text for a year-long course targeted to advanced undergraduates or first-year graduate students, as well as for a variety of shorter courses on selected aspects of the field. It will also serve as a landmark new reference text, and as an introduction to many of the more advanced topics of interest to modern researchers. An accompanying Student Solutions Manual will become available. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Modern Physical Organic Chemistry
This is the book that made me a chemist.

I used this book in the undergraduate class taught by one of the authors. It's a very clear, easy-to-follow text, taking the abstract concepts of physical chemistry and applying them in a qualitative sense to organic chemical bonding. Using molecular orbital theory, it builds up an intuitive sense of how orbitals define the structure and reactivity of molecules.

This is such and invaluable topic, and the book is so clearly written, that I ended up reading the whole thing, even though only about half the book was assigned reading. I felt like every paragraph I read taught me something new about the way reactions work. This is one of the few textbooks from my time as an undergraduate which is comprehensive enough and important enough to keep on my shelf through my entire career as an academic researcher.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite textbook.
This is, hands down, my favorite textbook. It is extremely thorough, and as such, it can be dense reading. However, it is one of the few books that I've read that's thorough but still comprehensible. As my professor said when we started our Physical Organic Chemistry course, "If you learn everything in this book, you will know more than me."

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
I originally had the Physical Organic book from Felix Carroll. Though that book is really good, I liked this book better for its detail and illustrations. It is a very good book to review concepts as well as learn in depth organic chemistry. I'm very picky about my books but was really glad this one was able to detail a subject I was having problems with: Felkin-Ahn models. So far it has helped me in studying for my cume's and I plan on keeping it for some time.

Truly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have...
This is the type of book that you will read and reference over and over again throughout the process of learning and researching advanced organic chemistry. The book does a great job of distilling down some of the common misnomers about vocabulary and ensures a comprehensive understanding of many areas within organic chemistry from chirality to non-covalent interactions and much more. I highly recommend this book to anyone pursuing a career in organic, polymer, and biochemistry. Thanks Amazon for delivering this to me in a timely manner and the book was in mint condition when received.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Phys Org. Chem Book
Modern Physical Organic Chemistry is a must have book for anyone who studies Organic Chemistry at the graduate level and has a desire for better (and complete) understanding of the foundations for every underlying concept in the field. Without being heavily centered on the Maths and calculations behind every concept, the authors still manage to go excessively deep into each of the topic covered to give you a fantastic understanding of them. I couldn't imagine getting through a Advanced Physical Organic Chemistry class without this book as a resource, and I would recommend over any other of its kind. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This new and innovative text helps students develop a deeper understanding of organic chemistry. It treats the subject as a coherent whole, complete with numerous logical connections, consequences, and an underlying structure and "language." Employing an approach based on mechanism and reaction type, the book empasizes understanding ideas rather than merely memorizing facts. It shows students how to realistically draw molecules and mechanisms to reveal the fundamental chemistry.

Using a fresh, accessible writing style as well as examples from everyday life, the authors explain the basics of organic chemistry carefully and thoroughly. A special focus on mechanism, orbitals, and stereochemistry helps students gain a solid comprehension of important factors common to all reactions. The book's innovative design enhances clarity and instruction with boxes that separate summary information and other material from the main text; a variety of colors that draw attention to items such as atoms, molecules, and orbitals; and figures that are drawn in red with significant parts emphasized in black. Early chapters feature carbonyl group reactions, and later chapters systematically develop the chemistry through discussions of spectroscopy, stereochemistry, and chemical reactions.

Each chapter opens with a "Connections" box, divided into three columns:

· Building on: Details material from previous chapters that relate to the current chapter

· Arriving at: Provides a guide to the content of the chapter

· Looking forward to: Previews later chapters, which develop and expand the current material ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text
This is one of the better organic textbooks on the market today. It gives a comprehensive approach to the basics, and also provides a more in-depth view of more advanced topics. This is the text my advanced organic chemistry text uses, and I have been very happy with it.Plus the price was great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great also for postgrad
I am a postgrad student in medicinal chemistry and this book helps me to clarify all these little things that you know that they are happening but you don't understand why or how. It helps me to refresh my organic chemistry knowledge while giving me the background to reach deeper knowledge. I only wish i could find it with hard cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars the Chemical Bible
This is what any chemists, young or old, should have on its shelf and know by heart. I have never found a more complete book on organic chemistry as it covers all the basic concept of the subject and a lot more! I am a post graduate student and I couldnt have a copy to ocnsult anytime I need it!
I cant regret my purchase. Best present for graduation that i have received!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not to diminish the rest, but...
When I declare this to be the best OC textbook I've ever seen, I don't wish to diminish the great contributions made by many authors across many decades. There are numerous competent, comprehensive, and scholarly works that have served both to educate generations of organic chemists and stand as references for practicing professionals.

In my opinion this work is head-and-shoulders above anything that has preceded it.In a comparative sense, all previous OC textbooks were designed by sadists to ensure that the student would have the most confusing and unpleasant experience possible. It is a joy to study this book. The pleasant nature of the experience seems to enhance retention of the information presented. What a concept!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best textbook out there!
Excellent textbook.Covers very systematically, and with ample regard for modern methods (something most organic textbooks lack), everything from first semester orgo to the beginning grad level.[Only major deficiency is the general uselessness of the index -- makes looking things up difficult.]But overall, a great textbook. As far as I'm aware, this is the only textbook out there that discusses more modern reactions (like the Swern and DMP oxidations, Evans auxiliary, etc.) that are commonly used in the contemporary organic lab. Also has a great introduction to organometallic reactions.Highly recommended for those considering chemistry graduate school.

Addendum to review:I have changed 4 stars to 5 stars. The authors have prepared a greatly improved index, which is posted on the OUP website. ... Read more

Product Description

Since its original appearance in 1977, Advanced Organic Chemistry has maintained its place as the premier textbook in the field, offering broad coverage of the structure, reactivity and synthesis of organic compounds. As in the earlier editions, the text contains extensive references to both the primary and review literature and provides examples of data and reactions that illustrate and document the generalizations. While the text assumes completion of an introductory course in organic chemistry, it reviews the fundamental concepts for each topic that is discussed.

The two-part fifth edition has been substantially revised and reorganized for greater clarity. Among the changes: Updated material reflecting advances in the field since 2001’s Fourth Edition, especially in computational chemistry; A companion Web site provides digital models for study of structure, reaction and selectivity; Solutions to the exercises provided to instructors online.

The material in Part A is organized on the basis of fundamental structural topics such as structure, stereochemistry, conformation and aromaticity and basic mechanistic types, including nucleophilic substitution, addition reactions, carbonyl chemistry, aromatic substitution and free radical reactions. Together with Part B: Reaction and Synthesis, the two volumes are intended to provide the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student in chemistry with a sufficient foundation to comprehend and use the research literature in organic chemistry.

4-0 out of 5 stars good
this product nice to purchase and shipping time is well managed
i m happy to buy this

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written text.
Carey and Sundberg Adv. Organic Chemistry is not a very effective book for learning Organic chemistry; explanations are often convoluted, poorly explained, and done in an unnecessarily roundabout fashion. Rather than present a basic concept and support it with various examples, the authors tend to simply present examples and expect the reader to understand different concepts by looking at examples, without properly explaining them. The authors also manage to divide the book into unmanageably large chapters, sections and subsections, yet still only managing to barely explain the concepts. Moreover, the problems at the end of each chapter frequently contain errors, and are often outdated. (Recently I encountered a problem which required the identification of the structure of a compound using, in part, NMR data. However, the paper referenced was from the 1960's, when NMR was not nearly as precise (i.e. peaks on a substituted aromatic ring would not be distinguishable). Ansyln and Dougherty is a preferable text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference on latest theories
This book is an excellent reference on the latest developments in the theory and practice of synthetic and physical organic chemistry. As someone who did their graduate work more than 40 years ago, I found it to be a very good source of material for refreshing my knowledge of the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff, no solutions manual
Currently using this book for a graduate class in organic chemistry, and I've got to say, it's very good. It's a little dense, but I plan to use it for reference after this class anyway. There is, unfortunately, no solutions manual available for student purchase, but the professor was kind enough to get the solutions manual and copy it for everyone (this is why I gave this book 4 instead of 5 stars).A very nice little addition in this revision: computational chemistry has been integrated into the text, and DFT, MD, etc. calculations are not explained, but mentioned with suggested uses.

4-0 out of 5 stars CHEM 2319-1
highly recommended in companionship with the Organic Chemistry text book

bought for my ochem class

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted!
Although it is not brand new, it is intact and suit my purpose, not really highlighted at all. As a purpose for checking my HW answers and as a study guide, it is totally worth it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Study Guide/Solutions Manual
I've been using this solutions manual for about six weeks now, and I have found it generally helpful. I mainly only use it for the solutions to problems section, which is most times explanatory on answers. Rarely, however, a solution's explanation can be confusing, and sometimes the solution itself is very ambiguous. The study guide section for each chapter is very concise, and is to be studied only if one has read the actual textbook. Some sections aren't explained at all, and are left to the reader to re-read the textbook. These sections are ones that cannot be thoroughly explained without going into textbook-like detail, so I think that it is appropriate for the solutions manual to do this. Overall, I would definitely recommend this to someone who has the textbook, as the exercises in the textbook are most times not enough to supplement your understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must
If you're in an ochem class that uses the Vollhardt and Schore textbook, I very strongly recommend buying this solutions manual. For each chapter it provides a section-by-section summary of the most important points and for the end of chapter questions it gives very detailed explanations of the answers. If an answer has the possibility of being unclear, it will explain, draw arrows, etc to make sure anyone can understand it. My favorite part is that it warns you about "tricks"; for example, in bold letters it will say tell you, "make sure you DON'T do this here", etc. Definitely worth the extra cost!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Manual!
This solutions guide is really great. The answers to all of the problems are given (mostly with detailed solutions). There are also very short guides that supplement chapters in the book. I would STRONGLY recommend this manual for anyone using the Vollhardt/Schore Organic Chemistry textbook. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Book
This book is very vague on most important topics in Organic I. Explains the basic need to know stuff but does not help much for tests in class, only a brush up at most after taking the class.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overall, not a bad book
I have never taken organic chemistry before so I bought this book as a preview and plan to read it over the summer before taking the actual course.I am more than 2/3 of the way through the book and overall I have to say it has been very helpful. The practice problems help to increase understanding further. The author does a good job at trying to make the subject interesting and adding in specific hints and details when applicable. However, I have noticed that topic coverage of certain subjects is a bit sparse, and I found numerous errors in the book already.I think that this book is comparable to Organic Chemistry for Dummies.I believe that book has a bit more detail and explanation. However, it lacks practice problems.Overall I think either book is a good bet.

Addition- as I am nearing the end of the book now I have discovered countless more errors. Had I known this book was so error ridden I would have never purchased it.While I think the material is good and helpful, I would not recommend purchasing this book unless you want to sort through lots of typing and content errors

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good For Class
Although I received As in chemistry, I never got the hack of organic chemistry. My professor was very good, the text was good, but somehow I missed something. This book did help though, I will say. I understood a few more things better after this. The book is very good if you need a refresher.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Supplement
Ok, let's examine the title of the book, The COMPLETE IDIOT'S GUIDE to Organic Chemistry.Well, you guessed it, I am a complete idiot when it comes to chemistry period!I took org I, decided to hold off on org II cuz I hated org I so much, and picked this book up two weeks before I took org II.The way the book is written tops--as far as explanations go--reading any ole boring textbook; however, it does not exactly replace your textbook or your prof's notes. It gave me a great summary of all the high points in org I that didn't sink in when I took it as well as what to expect in org II. The author explained basic concepts much better than any other chem teacher I've had in college, and for the record, that would be 5.I would definitely get this book if you are needing to brush up on some stuff, or if your textbook/teacher is doing a crappy job at helping you understand some basic concepts.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent review

5-0 out of 5 stars Great O-Chem I Guide!!!
This guide really helped me understand aspects of O-Chem such as sterochemistry and reaction mechanisms. I would highly recommend this book for O-Chem I as a supplemental guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars org chem
I don't know if I'm supposed to be reviewing the book or the person who sold it to me, but they were both very acceptable.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book might help some, but not me
At times, this book was more complicated than my main textbook for the class. The practice problems in this textbook were actually way harder and more complicated than anything I came across on my exams. The way I would work through this class was read the chapter in my text book, then read this book for clarification. After 4-5 chapters, I realized I was ending more confused than I started and just quit reading it. I think it's really hard to buy a good supplement for your text book when every professor teaches organic chemistry differently. Product Description

The two-part, fifth edition of Advanced Organic Chemistry has been substantially revised and reorganized for greater clarity. The material has been updated to reflect advances in the field since the previous edition, especially in computational chemistry. Part B describes the most general and useful synthetic reactions, organized on the basis of reaction type. It can stand-alone; together, with Part A: Structure and Mechanisms, the two volumes provide a comprehensive foundation for the study in organic chemistry. Companion websites provide digital models for students and exercise solutions for instructors.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book
The book is very new, but it took a long while for it to arrive.
After I ordered this book, it was delivered after two weeks. This is a little bit too long.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing
As a previous review suggested, this book fell short of expectations. There are in fact quite a few errors (i.e. pentavalent carbons, etc.); such errors are especially prevalent in the problem section of the book. Moreover, the book does contain many outdated problems.

Although the organization of the book isn't horrible, it isn't a very readable text, mainly due to the detail they go into in explanations of seemingly irrelevant things. In other words, this book is not very conducive to skimming, or good at all for review; especially when it comes to the carbon acid section. Rather than simply stating general trends of carbon acids, they go into detail about the different methods for measuring the pKas of carbon acids, and the different advantages and disadvantages to such methods. While this may be of interest to some people, it simply makes the section much less readable, perhaps a short summary at the end of each section summarizing general concepts would help alleviate this error. So rather than having to sift through 20 pages of mostly worthless crap to find one simple concept, it would be briefly outlined in the end (or beginning) of a section, or chapter.

Perhaps the thing that annoys me most about this book, however, is the absolutely horrible way in which structures are presented in the book. Rather than sticking to simple Line-bond structures (or carbon skeletons, whatever you know them as), molecules are presented as an obnoxious mixture of both. In some cases (i.e. ylides, and such) actually labling carbons and hydrogen atoms can be useful. However, when you get to the problem section and see something to the effect of -CH2=C(CH2)3CH2CHO- rather than a simple line-bond structure, it becomes obnoxious very quickly. Moreover, in larger molecules, they tend to show cycles in line-bond format, and substituents as shown above. I know that being able to convert back and forth between the structures is important in organic chemistry, but if you are going on to advanced organic and you can't convert between the two, then I think you have bigger issues.
The main problem with this way of showing molecules is that it it makes it much more annoying while solving the problems (which can bw annoying enough with all the errors), especially while doing either mechanisms or synthesis problems, you have to draw out the line-bond structure anyways in order to be able to clearly visualize larger molecules, so showing molecules the way they do, in almost every case (with a few exceptions) is completely idiotic. Furthermore, the way they represent molecules in the text makes it much more prone to typesetting errors (i.e. pentavalent carbons, and the like). But who knows, maybe they are working in errors on purpose so they can revise is to bring out another edition.

In my opinion, in order for this book to be suitable for actually studying and learning adv. organic chemistry, this book needs a massive overhaul. Until them, reading this book to learn chemistry is about as effective as reading an English dictionary in other to learn English.

I ordered the book one week before the class starded and it arrived on the day before class. The book is in excellent condition.

1-0 out of 5 stars 5th Edition Misses the Mark--Loaded with Errors
This review is specifically meant to refer to the latest edition (5th ed.) of this book. The earlier editions were quite good, but the 5th edition completely misses the mark.Ordinarily, one would think that a book such as this would get better and better with each new edition. Not so with this book. For some reason, the 5th edition is loaded with mistakes.....many of these appear to be typesetting errors (e.g., atoms in the wrong place, pentavalent carbons, nonsense intermediates within reaction pathways, etc.).It is terribly disappointing.I do not know what happened at the publisher this time, but, in good conscience, they really should not have released this book the way it is.It does not appear to have been the authors' fault, but rather it was likely the fault of Springer (the publisher). This looks like an example of the mindless side of capitalism....large publishing companies who have already taken over much of their competition also have ridiculous deadlines to meet quarterly earnings goals, so they rush through the publication process and end up turning out garbage. The only way that these companies ultimately avoid getting into a heap of trouble with the FTC or other consumer advocate agencies is by issuing online addendums filled with corrections to the myriad of errors. Ask yourselves, is that why you want to buy a new book..... so that you have to download a 50-page corrections addendum to fix all of the errors that the publisher missed or opted not to correct in the first place? This sort of thing is happening more and more these days in the publishing industry, even with software. And the larger and larger these publishing companies become, the more we see it. I recommend that you DO NOT BUY the 5th edition of this book; it should have been recalled by the publisher, and everyone who bought it should have received a refund. However, if you really want to buy Carey and Sundberg's book, then buy the 4th edition used; you will be much happier.Apparently, Springer scaled back on qualified staff and/or hired a bunch of publishing flunkies sometime between the release of the 4th and 5th editions of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive
This is probably the most comprehensive text book available for Organic Chemistry, Develops largely on the Part A of the book. So for a complete understanding you need to possess the Part A of the book. Largely covers the topic of Synthesis and Reactions which is an important part of the Graduate education in Organic Chemistry. Earlier editions of the book cover the same material and are almost as good as this one but each topic in this edition builds up with a different approach of Computational and Theoretical Chemistry.
The references provided in each chapter ensure the complete and total understanding of the subject and help in the student in research.
Overall a great book for the Graduate student in Organic Chemistry. ... Read more

I order this text book form them and they said it would take three weeks to get it shipped to me.However, when I contacted them after the three weeks were up they said that they didn't have the book when I ordered it.Fortunately, they refunded me my money, but I don't think they would have if I had not sent a complaint about not having my book. And because they failed to notify me that they didn't have the book I now don't have enough time to get another book for my class and thus has added a lot of complication to my life.

Over the years, I have seen a great many Organic Chemistry study guides and none were as thorough and easy to understand as Mobi's. It isn't too introductory or too complex so it teaches you all that you need and also will serve as a reference later on. It has appropriate graphics. The text is clear, on the point, and very understandable. Overall, I would definitely recommend this ebook. It is much better than any other Organic Chemistry ebooks I've ever read. Any criticisms I have of this text are very minor, and it makes the subject both interesting and genuinely enjoyable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book (If you have a professor to help you sort through it all)
I was really nervous about going into O Chem, so I bought this book hoping it would help me out. I am not a chemistry genius, so the book was kind of overwhelming if you attempt more than one chapter in a sitting. Luckily my old chem prof volunteered to help me prep, so he can sort through the necessary and not-so necessary stuff. Overall, the book has good topics you need to know before you start...but you might need some help figuring out what you really "need" to know for the course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great prep for Organic Chem
This book was exactly what I needed to do well in Organic Chemistry. It clearly explains the concepts that you need to understand in order to do well in O Chem.I would recommend reading it a few weeks before you begin Organic Chem 1 and then go back and review it just before beginning class. It might even be helpful to read it towards the end of Inorganic Chem. since it explains some concepts of Inorganic better than many text books.I could have improved my ACS final exam by about 5% if I had read this book before that test.

If you are hoping for help in O Chem 2 it will not be as useful unless if your problem was not understanding the concepts of O Chem 1 or Inorganic Chem.

I took my O Chem 1&2 at an intensive 8 week program and after studying this book the only real challenges I had was with organic synthesis. Many of my classmates struggled a lot more than me and I credit this book with making the difference for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lucid writing makes for better learning.
This is a nice, compact companion to your year-long O chem course. I wouldn't rely solely on this book for a comprehensive outline of reactions. It's a well-written book that clarifies a lot of misunderstandings students might have and encourages you to really embrace the subject rather than memorize. When I first read this book, I thought it was clearer than my larger textbook. When asked to predict products of reactions I thought I'd never seen, I recalled a lot of the fundamental principles emphasized over and over in Karty and let out a sigh of relief. I recommend this product to anyone wanting to overcome their fear of Ochem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Completely Fantastic
This is hands down the BEST supplemental text I have purchased for any class, let alone OCHEM. It's because of this book that I did well in Organic Chem I, am doing well in Organic Lab, and expect to do well in Organic Chem II.

If you get this book and really study it - preferably before the semester starts - it will boost your grade by a full letter. Obviously you have to go to lecture, study the textbook, and attend discussion. It's OCHEM after all. This book won't substitute for the class; none can. But if you add this book to your arsenal you can definitely do well in Organic.

Nuts & Bolts will show you how to look at OCHEM in a really conceptual way that will make the entire class less difficult. I actually enjoyed OCHEM after using this book. It can be a neat class and Nuts & Bolts can help with that.

Remember - it's all about the nucleophiles and electrophiles! You can nail OCHEM with this book.
