Excellent origami book
Since finding this book in the local library, we have kept it until we can buy a copy. The pictures are easy to follow, the products good, even for beginners, the terms clearly explained, and the range of models is good -lots of animals and boats. Let's hope the book is soon available again.

Some repetition of Advanced Origami, but a beautiful book nonetheless
I give this book 4 stars with reservations.Many of the patterns are VERY similar to those in Advanced Origami.However, between the two books, I'd advocate buying this one, so, hence the four stars.

LaFosse's books are unique in that they focus on paper and on wet folding.He empahsizes the art of folding, not intricate folds.His patterns tend to have a fairly low number of steps, but in order to generate the desired final product, a lot of time will be spent finishing.

The repetition starts in the "Techniques" section at the front of the book when he talks about making paper.Identical photographs are used in multiple cases between this book and Advanced Origami.

Entirely new patterns not similar to those found in Advanced Origami include a lobster, a fairly weak monk seal design, a great manatee fold, a cormorant, a great penguin, a modular flower requiring several sheets of paper for an un-extraordinary result, a fairly mundane fighter jet, and an amazing alligator.It's basically worth buying the book just for the alligator.Folds that gave me deja vu included the grackle, whale, butterfly, turtle, and orchid.(Sound familiar?)

Anyway, it certainly seems worth having one of LaFosse's books in your library if you're an origami enthusiast.If I had to choose, I'd pick this one.If the first one totally rocked your world, then you'll want to pick this one as well.

These books are for an intermediate or better folder, in my opinion.Complete beginners will probably find them a bit frustrating.

Great Instructions and Decorating Ideas
The very best set of "how-to" instructions for origami folds ever put out with a holiday twist. Each illustration is clear, clean, and easy to understand. Each fold is thoroughly illustrated. You come away with a deeper understanding of overall origami design concepts, too. Plus - the color photos are great inspiration for your own decorating ideas. Don't Bother
This book had a couple decent ideas for Christmas decorations, but don't be fooled by the "origami" in the title.There were only a few standard origami models that you can find elsewhere just as easily (such as the Crane).Most of the rest of the models in the book were cut and paste types with a couple of folds.Over all, I was very disappointed with this book.

I was a little disappointed with this book.There weren't any new folds--just diagrams for the classic crane, waterbomb, etc.There are some good ideas for putting the various models together to make wreaths, christmas trees, and dioramas, as well as a nativity scene; but if you have a few basic origami books you won't need any of the folds in this one.

Very confusing paperweight (if it was thick enough)
After reading Tomoko Fuse's excellent book on Unit Origami I wanted to get a little farther into it.This books seemed a good place to start.It is not.

On the plus side, there are many, many models in the book.Also, there seems to be some fundamental "theory" that generates them, which would allow a great deal of flexibility and range of design to anyone who used it.

On the negative side, I can't for the life of me figure out how to make even a single model.The whole first 3/4 of the book consists of things like this: A line drawing of a polyhedron labelled, for instance, "Rhombicuboctahedron" and then a photo of an origami pice that doesn't seem related.Finally on page 40 (of ~75) there's a second on "Model Construction".It turns out you need paper in multiple sizes (1.6875 inches is one of them) to make almost all the models.And it still doesn't explain just how to put the units together or even how to make the units (other than "this is how to make a flat hexagon" type of instructions)!

There's also some kind of method or technique called "gyroscoping" that I can't figure out.

I would give this 0 stars, but the other review is so positive that I feel sure that, if one could penetrate the dense prose sections or understand the seemingly-content-free main body, great things could be done.

Origami for the serious Geometrician
This is a book designed for constructing geometric models using small folded units or modules.A large number of polyhedra are explained in this volume.

The beginning of the book (first 50 pages or so), talks about the different classes of figures and give detailed information about each figure, including photographs.

There is then a short section devoted to creating different shapes of paper from squares (triangles, pentagons, hexagons, etc.).

Finally there is a section for folding the individual units themselves.Each unit is capable of connecting to the others.

There is an interesting feature that I would like to see in other unit books.After a particularly well-detailed unit, there was a one-page summary of the folding thus making it easier on the folder who does not memorize the unit and just needs a guide while folding the requisite number of units.

This is a well laid out book that does an excellent job of covering the material and achieves is goal.But this is not a book for all folders.It is aimed at the serious folder of geometric solids.

The typical low price from Dover makes this an easy volume to add to one's origami or geometry library. ... Read more

The photo for this product (and other Tuttle origami papers) are misleading. The colors look fairly subdued, but they are anything but. These are *vivid* bright colors... not to my liking. This might be okay for a kid, but the look is wrong for traditional or artistic origami. Disappointing.

Limited colors and patterns. I used them to teach origami so in this case they were perfect.

Brilliant but slightly flawed
Without a doubt some of the Origami designs in this book are simply spectacular and exceedingly beautiful. But the point of a book like this, in my opinion is to make it very clear to the reader how to make these. I have been doing origami for years, as a small hobby, so I am just an intermediate level folder. And I have had some trouble with the diagrams in this book - they could have been done better. Some of the branching paths are difficult to understand and some of the more important folds and processes are put into rather small diagrams which makes them hard to understand.
This is a really great book and I really, absolutely love the projects but the diagrams could be better. 4 of 5.

Aptly Named
This book is, so to speak, nothing short of brilliant.While I don't particularly prefer the wet-folding technique (too much like sculpting for my taste), Brill's models are breathtaking in their simplicity and realistic approach.I've yet to see lions which look better when complete.

This book is outstanding for folders of both intermediate and advanced levels.The final, rounded product is both aesthetically pleasing, as well as technically interesting.

Excellent, not for beginners
The Good:
- Positively beautiful models
- All models can still be folded in less than 10 minutes if you are fairly good with origami (no 10 hour projects here)
- Fairly clear hand drawn diagrams
- Some quick suggestions from the author for help on folding
- This is "real" origami - no gluing, no scissors, no multiple sheets for a single model (except for the geometric design section, where this is expected).
- most models can be done with almost any kind of paper

The Bad:
- Numerous typos, they don't make the book unreadable, but do give it a very unrefined feeling.(Author states at one point that he had found a better way to make a certain model, but had already finished drawing the diagrams for the book - things like this add to the feeling of "incompleteness")
- Some diagrams are so small they are hard to read - Brill gives large diagrams for the easy steps, and then squishes 2 dozen detail fold lines into a single tiny diagram later on
- One or two diagram mistakes found, should not be a problem for the target audience of this book
- Some non traditional starting shapes, such as triangles and rectangles, though usually with basic proportions (no 2.7172 x 1 rectangles needed here).I don't consider this to be a violation of the origami "rules" at all, especially when the finished result warrants the different starting shape, but some people might have a problem with this
- recommended starting paper sizes and type are sometimes given, but no indication is ever given of the size of the pictured models, nor the start-finish size ratio

Other:
- Not for beginners, some fairly difficult pieces, you should be able to do complicated petal folds and sinks in your sleep with no instructions, though a few easier models are included too
- Many of the models focus on a 3D effect - even someone experienced in origami may have trouble with this at first if not used to giving models depth."Wet folding", a technique to overcome the difficulties in making a 3D model, is described briefly, but is difficult to master.

Overall:
- 5 stars; despite some of the significant flaws in the book, the models here are too beautiful to deserve any other rating.

Fantastic origami book
This excellent origami book consists of a selection of original models designed by David Brill, Chairman of the British Origami Society and one of the most talented origami creators and folders in the United Kingdom.

Many of the pieces in the book are advanced but they are clearly diagrammed and will provide plenty of scope for creativity as many of the forms will be suitable for wet folding.Some can be worked in ordinary origami paper but many require very large sheets and I remember one year cutting a 20 inch equilateral triangle of foil for the Christmas Tree Fairy which in fact produced quite a small figure about six inches high!

This is therefore not a book for the beginner but it is certainly one which should be on any origami enthusiast's bookshelf.Models range from Mr Brill's Ship in a Bottle and the Lidded Box, to the Cigarettes in a Box and other geometric forms.There is also a whole variety of folds which are used in scenes in the photographs.These include St George and the Dragon and a wonderful Santa in a sleigh complete with reindeer!

Fantastic Models
This book will provide some fantastic / lifelike models. This is not, however, a beginners book. A novice will be frustrated over the difficulty of the models. Montroll's "Teach yourself Origami" would be more advisable for people looking for innitiation in this elegant art form. The scene of St George and the Dragon, the Lion family, the Nativity, etc. are true works of art! math extensions
I ordered this book for some fun math activities at the end of the year.I'll need time to learn how to make the projects; some of them are quite complex.From a geometry standpoint, the book will be a useful extension at school.

Not well written
The diagrams were not very clear and the steps were too convoluted and not well explained.

PAPER-FOLDING DUD
I consider myself a good folder. I have successfully made many geometric projects from other books. However, this book was a complete frustration. I killed a lot of origami trees before finally tossing the book.

Do yourself a favor, go to the public library and order loads of origami books. Try them out and THEN buy the books that work for you.

Pretty sweet
This book really has a fair amount of really cool models to make.If found the directions relatively easy to follow.The directions are actually drawn on computer or something which has its advantages and disadvantages.Pictures can have hands that get in the way and inadequate directions on how to fold it even though it shows segments of steps through the pictures.
Overall, I'm satisfied with the book since this was -$10.

Inexpensive Reference for Modular Enthusiasts
This slim volume has some nice features that make up for a lack of illustrations and model photos, including a clever pentagon template, tips for cutting equilateral triangles & hexagons, and suggestions for cutting multiple pieces for the projects. I especially enjoyed working with the triangle, simple square, and the spike ball modules, which I used to make solid, satisfying models.The "triangle edge module" can be used to make a nice tetrahedron or an icosahedron (which helped me see the relationship between that shape and a dodecahedron).I skipped a couple of spiky models that required glue, butI was generally very pleased with the book. ... Expensive for what this is
For one thing, don't be fooled: this is a package of 18 sheets of 5 7/8 x 5 7/8 in. paper. It comes in 9 colors, which is nice, but this can be found in any large craft store, in more colors, larger sizes, for less money. For example, at Pearl, you can find 24 pieces of this same metallic paper, with more colors for about $1.95, and you don't have to pay for shipping, like if you order them offline.

Great paper for folding, foil stays on the paper even after a few creases or folds, it doesnt release from the paper as some do.

First of all, this is not a book, it's a collection of 18 sheets of foil backed with white paper, for use in folding origami models. The foil is reasonably good quality and does not crack when you make a sharp fold as some do. The range of colours is quite good though as always in a multi pack like this there are some you may not want to use. The sheets are cut very accurately and the papers work well for folding complex models as the foil is very thin.

I regard the cost as being the one thing against this product, there is no need for all the extra packaging and the paper could easily have been sold in its cellophane wrapping only with just a tab at the top or a cardboard insert with the publisher information, and then it could have cost far less. However it's difficult to find good quality origami foil, this is similar in feel to Japan foil so seasoned folders will be pleased to have an easily available supply. ... Read more

Nice origami book
This book contains a collection of fifteen original origami models by John Montroll.They are really for the intermediate level paperfolder who has mastered the techniques of inside and outside reverse folds along with some squashing and collapsing techniques and who can fold reasonably accurately.

There are no photographs of finished models, but the computerised diagrams are clear and the models are attractive when made up.This would make a nice gift and anyone who enjoys Montroll's work will like the book.

Good collection of bird models
This is actually a good collection of Montroll's birds.I find folding Montroll's birds a good break from some of the more complicated models and the book's price can't be beat.There are 15 models of birds consisting of a Duck, Swan, Goose, Flamingo, Pelican, Heron, Pheasant, Seagull, Hummingbird, Cardinal, Cormorant, Stork, Eagle, Canary, and Parrot.Although if you are looking for a book to get you started in Origami I would suggest "Teach Yourself Origami" which is a great book to work your way into Origami and Montroll's models.

Awsome birds of Origami
I bought three books lately and this is my favorite.It only cost about three bucks so you can't beat the price and the models are great.I particularly like the Parrot, Eagle and Humming bird.The most complicatedbird is the Pheasant because of step 26, but it's probably just me.Getthis book you will not regret it!

Most amazing origami book that I have ever encountered
This is the most complete and amazing origami book that I have ever seen; the author covers both sides of what is a very wide street. On one side are the individuals that are just interested in folding the paper into detailed works of art. That side is covered with a thick and glorious brush. Precise instructions for the creation of several very complex three-dimensional figures are included. Some of those figures are:

*) A goatfish
*) A pteranodon
*) An African elephant
*) A bull moose
*) A Black Forest cuckoo clock

Each section about creating a figure opens with a picture of the finished product and a detailed diagram of the sheet of paper to fold. The dimensions of the paper, segmentation of the paper, fold lines and final position of each segment of the paper is well marked. Once this is done, there is a set of sequential and detailed descriptions of the folds that are to be performed. I was regularly amazed at how such a complex final product is composed of a set of such simple operations.
The other side of the street is the mathematics that is used to describe how origami works. Several sections are devoted to the two to three-dimensional transformations that turn the simple sheet of paper into such a beautiful figure. Although the mathematics does occasionally rise to a significant level of difficulty, like the creation of the figures themselves, it can be understood by almost anyone with the appropriate level of persistence and determination.

Amazing book!
This book is definite must have for people who love origami! Robert Lang has provided valuable insight into designing and shared diagrams for some of his best work to date. This book is definitely not for those who are beginners but for those who have a little experience in folding intermediate to slightly complex models. It contains diagrams to 22 models, and a crease pattern to the ingeniously designed train set. It goes without saying that the Scaled Koi and the Black forest Cuckoo clock are the best designs in this book. 585 pages long, this book is every bit worth the amount and will make a prized possession!

An indispensible book
This book is indispensible for origami lovers since informative books are so rare.
This book is definitely meant for semi-dedicated origami lovers who want to understand how origami pros create new models from scratch. If you are a new enthusiastic, take my advice and do not buy this book since the number of models in it is quiet a few. Eack chapter studies a different model in order to show different aspects of the theory. This book will let you understand -as the title says- "design secrets". Mathematical explanations are somewhat complex but there is no need to fear. Thanks to writer's clear narration, even a guy like me whose last math course was in high school is able to follow the theory. After studying this book, you may start creating your own models. But be patient! Start from creating simple models. Then try more complex models.

It will blow your mind away!
I consider myself to be an intermediate origami aficionado and have designed a couple of simple designs of my own.Therefore, when I heard about this book, I had to have it!It is definitely the bible of origami.However, just like the Bible, especially the King James Version, it's not always easy to understand.It takes time and patience to understand, apply, and master.It will probably take me a couple of years - I am not giving up!

A 'must-have' in your origami book collection!
I bought this book this past week, not really sure whether the "advanced" in the title of the book would put me off folding any of the projects within it. I tried the "Koi" as a first model from this book, and even tried my hands at wet folding! The result was great!!

The author has taken pains to explain the steps in detail and has even jotted down points for tweaking the end result and coming up with your own perfect little model.

This book has easily become one of my favorites and I enjoy folding the designs in it. It even has a section on making your paper. Tips on the sizes, colors as well as type of paper to use for folding each of the projects are clearly mentioned. The expected size of the final model is also given, which makes it a lot easier to choose.

The book contains instructions (in the form of diagrams) to fold the following models - north American cardinal, origamido butterfly, koi, sea turtle, squirrel, toco toucan, frog, ruby0throated hummingbird, goldfish, horseshoe crab, cattleya orchid, happy good-luck bat, big brown bat, praying mantis and the panther mask.

My favorite out of these is the cattleya orchid which is a dead ringer for an original, and with the right kind of paper and wet folding, you can do wonders with it!

This book is one for experienced folders and beginners should first try their hands at folding other models / easier stuff before attempting models from this book. The designs in this book range from intermediate to complex.

If you love origami and are keen on having an origami book collection or for that matter want to try your hands at some amazing life like deisgns, this book is a definite 'must-buy'. The designs in this, when combined with the right kind of paper can produce the most captivating models which will leave you satisfied after all the effort you have put it.

Beautiful book
This author obviously has a passion for his art and the patterns and information are beautiful and well done.

A great origami guide for serious folders with excellent tips on producing paper
I ordered this book expecting a collection of fairly advanced diagrams. I was particularly interested in the Cattleya orchid model and the frog, two of my favorite subjects to fold. I was very pleasantly surprised with the book for a number of reasons. The quality of the printing and binding is superb. The diagrams are easy to follow and very thorough. The information on how to produce your own paper to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing results for any model is very nice.
I do have a few very minor issues with the book. The first is that the models designed to be folded with duo colored paper do not have two-tone diagrams. Even though you may be folding with duo paper, it makes folding easier to have a diagram with a two-color scheme. The second issue is more of a personal one. To really achieve the best results from any of these models they need to be wet folded from handmade paper. Standard origami paper or paper foil simply will not produce the results you are looking for. That being said, I am very happy I purchased this book and would recommend it to any origami enthusiast.

Good for getting started with polyhedra
The Beginner's Book of Modular Origami Polyhedra was my introduction to the wonderful world of origami polyhedra.It gives helpful background info on the platonic solids, and features a few models in the shape of each.Unfortunatly, the book doesn't really have the best diagrams, some of the models are pretty advanced (though mostly because of the bad diagrams), and a couple of the models are just the same modules put in each section.The only problem with having the same modules is that you don't have diagrams for how to put together some of the larger polyhedra.The book still keeps me entertained, and the models look amazing on my bookshelves.Hopefully the author will publish more books on the other polyhedra out there.

An excellent introduction to origami
The five Platonic solids are excellent demonstrators of the fundamentals of three-dimensional geometry. They are easy to understand and the theoretical reason why they are the only such solids is one of the most understandable of proofs. The situation is further improved when it is possible for the student to create the objects and that task is made very easy by the material in this book.
The authors first introduce the basic terminology used to describe the folding and then use detailed diagrams to further illustrate the basic folds that will be used. With these tactics as a base, the creation of all of the five Platonic solids is demonstrated. In some cases more than one technique is illustrated.
Most mathematics is abstract, the manipulations needed to work with the objects is often done in the head rather than with a physical object. However, when it is possible to actually create the objects, it is a pleasure for both the instructor and the students. Provided of course that there is a set of instructions that are easy to understand and follow. That is the case here, this book can be used to teach students and train teachers in the valuable skill of teaching mathematics by the simple act of folding paper.

Great Little Book at a Great Price
This is a great book to start out with, and the price is more than reasonable.The instructions for building the pieces are easy to understand.It took me less than fifteen minutes to make the piece in the bottom left corner of the cover.If you're a grade school teacher this might be a great book for an arts and crafts project.I would think that a third grader could handle several of them.

Needs improvement!
This book would be a whole lot better if the diagrams were better than just black & white lines without any shading or anything to show dimension...You need to know what you're doing to figure out how to make the items in this book. ... Read more

amazing bugs
I baught this book a week or so ago. Almost all the models are high intermediate to advanced. Plan on spending at least a few hours on each model. Not for begginers at all. The diagrams are sometimes confusing and will require multiple attemps sometimes to understand what is going on. There is very little written out in the steps which could be helpful in making some folds. If you prosper and finish a model you will be overjoyed with the incredible detail in the bugs. Dont use any old piece of paper. Make sure it can withstand the folds and sometimes adding some tape (temporarily) while making a fold so the paper doesnt rip while folding is helpful and after the fold you can remove the tape. Enough of a Challenge and Plenty of Inspiration
I bought this book because I used to make origami llamas years ago and had long forgotten.After an exhaustive search, this was the only book I could find with instructions for a llama.In that respect, I'd say this book met my expectations.

Most of the instructions are intermediate and can be constructed in a few minutes.They are challenging enough that you feel a wonderful sense of accomplishment upon finishing an animal.

Something that other reviewers may overlook is that this book provides wonderful inspiration for creating your own origami animals.Many animals start out from a base that you could branch off from to create tigers, dolphins, moose, etc.

Nothing new at all, which is the only problem.
This is by far my LEAST favorite Montroll book.It is basically a collection of animals that he has either previously or since done much better!I own almost all of his books, and I would not recommend this one to any other person that has most of his books.However, the 3 star rating may be unfair, because I am comparing this book to the rest of Montrolls.I think, compared to most other origami animal books, this one would still rank near the top, but not after people discover Montroll's better books (North American Animals, African Animals, etc.)

Good paper for beginners
I like this paper. It is thin yet durable and it has a little bit of a vellum feel to it similar to the outer wrapper on a chocolate bar. Not quite but similar.
It comes in a variety of colorful small print repeating patterns and on the opposite side of each sheet is the corresponding solid color. The picture on the cover shows patterned color on one side and blank white on the other but this isn't what I got.
Being almost seven inches square means it is a little bit easier to work with. It comes with a fold out booklet that gives you some introductory folding instructions and six different projects: Swan, Pig, Tortoise, Samurai Helmet, Rowboat, and Star Box.

One nice thing about these folds is that they have a Japanese Origami feel to them; The folds in the booklet would be a bit of a challenge for absolute beginners but if you have done a little origami you will get them. See my accompanying picture that shows some of the paper and the six projects in the booklet.

Just what I wanted
Unlike a prior reviewer I thought the product information was pretty clear on what was included, one sided, patterned 6 3/4 x 6 3/4 paper. here's a nice touch tho, that I thought was unusual- the non-patterned side is colored the same as the background of the patterned side, not white, and I thought that was just SUPERB. I am very pleased with the patterns, I have never had good luck finding patterned paper in stores. It is just the size I want as I want to try making Origami jewelry. anyone looking for double sided larger paper can find it here, I bought a pack of that too, and was very surprised, I'd never seen patterned paper before. The little directions are a good starter, but there is also a beginning book offered on Amazon: Easy Origami by John Montroll that is a wonderful starter- gets you up and running with no frustration or heavy learning curve- marvelous for children or newbies.

Good Quality, Easy to fold!
This paper pack is by Tuttle again and is of a real good quality. It is easy to fold, too. One can fold pretty Kusudamas with this paper and other Modular pieces. At least that's what I have used this particulr paper pack for. This again, as with most Tuttle origami paper packs, comes in 48 colors of patterned origami paper, single - sided. One gold foil sheet is also included in addition to this.

Execelente !!!!
Si su nivel es intermedio y quiere incursionar en modelos complejos este libro le será de gran ayuda. Para algunos origamistas los modelos terminados no tienen gran realismo, pero con un buen papel y color, se pueden conseguir muy buenos resultados. No es un libro para principiantes Ud. Debe tener conocimiento de ciertos dobleces y conocer las convenciones de los diagramas.
Estoy estudiando varias figuras y hasta el momento mi nivel de satisfacción es muy alto.

This one is IT
Out of all the books in my collection; this is the only book i still haven't completed all the projects.All projects in this book are for Advanced skilled.Most require complex folds that takes much time and effort to complete.The results are INSANE!The level of detail of these bug is unreal.Mine have been mistaken for real bugs on several occasions.

Anyone feeling like they want to take it to the second... or third level this is a must to have!

Very difficult models that can be very frustrating to complete
I see I'm in the minority on this book, and I'm sure I'll get a bunch of "unhelpful" votes from people disagreeing with my opinion, but I found this book really frustrating for the amount of steps that are just so difficult to get through. To be honest, until I got this book, I'd never really had major difficulties with any origami I've done, I've been folding for over 30 years, I had even folded Lang's previous monster the Cuckoo Clock from The Complete Book of Origami, Montroll's Stego and other such complex models. I've done plenty of insects before (I loved the mantis in his Origami Zoo book) but a fair number of the ones in this book just drove me nuts. There just is not enough explanation of quite a few of the intermediate steps. He often has very nice, detailed explanations of some of the later steps, but just skims over earlier ones that end up being rather inexplicable as a result. There are just a lot of places where I just totally had no idea at all how he was getting from one step to the next. I'd try such models again and get stuck in the middle again, and I personally just do not find that enjoyable to put so much time into something only to get totally stuck and unable to continue. Sure, it happens once in awhile regardless...but with this book it became commonplace. Are the models in this book top-noptch, highly detailed and realistic insects? When successfully folded, absolutely. But for me, what makes an origami book great is the ability to take extremely complex, interesting models (which this book most certainly has) and diagram them in such a way that a reasonably competent folder can accomplish them with a concerted effort 90+% of the time. And this book definitely missed that mark, so I simply cannot give it as high a rating as I had hoped.

I'd certainly recommend you avoid this book until you have quite a few years of experience folding and can easily handle any type of model, and advanced steps like reverse folded sinks, etc. But I'd also suggest you consider whether you are the type of folder that doesn't mind spending an hour or two on something and have nothing to show for it, but is able to move on and try again (and again and again...) Or if you mind having models that you really want to do, and just cannot figure out. It frustrates me to no end that this book of all the ones I own I simply am not able to figure out all the models in. I am used to messing up a model on the first try once in awhile but there are models in this book I tried several times and honestly felt like I just could do over and over and still not figure out. I personally just don't have quite that level of perseverance, so this book tends to sit on my shelf while I do other, not necessarily easier models, but ones that at least I know I will be able to complete successfully.

Long Live Robert Lang!
Although Lang's Origami Insects & Their Kin is several years old, it still stands as the premier origami book, and it still is a masterpiece because it offers many detailed true-to-life models; two spiders, butterfly, dragonfly, ant..., and ends with a scorpion, and for around $11.00, this book is a steal.

I did fold one model from the book, nope, not the ant, LOL! but the praying mantis, and it turned out great, just like the real thing, so much so, that I almost squashed it. Wait! I think I did squash it, Ha Ha Ha!!

Original method!!
Original method for construction planes.The only suggestion is to improve the adequate scale for the missiles construction.

Charming and creative.Maybe a bit misnamed...
An origami purist might object that these models are not true to the art form, because they are made up of multiple sheets of paper, and you will occasionally make cuts and use adhesive.

Purists can be tiresome, though.I salute the creativity on display in this book.Mr. Wang uses very clear diagrams and beautiful photographs to show how to build these neat models.Each one is made up of modules of one or more sheets of square paper.The sizes of each sheet are not set in stone, but the various modules require sheets of a standardized geometric progression.You have your "unit" sized sheets, then 1/4, 1/16, and 1/64 sized sheets, which are made by taking whatever your unit size sheet is, and progressively cutting into quarters.This is very convenient and easy to remember, and requires no measurement more involved than halving a dimension.You do end up using some non-standard sized sheets for smaller components like missle bodies, and cardboard is specified for prop blades, missile fins, etc.Mr. Wang shows how to make a number of standardized modules that are re-used in multple projects elswhere in the book.The models are, for the most part, very recognizable "caracatures" of the full sized plane.

This is a very charming and beautifully illustrated work.These would be really good projects to make for kids, or, if they're old enough to be trusted with an X-acto knife, great rainy day craft projects for them to take on.

Now I have a use for those annoying political mailers..
I can use them to fold Ali's Folded Dish, or make the Crown & Towers Game. I really like origami: helps me focus and forget the annoying distractions of the day (like all those political ads).And making origami from 'trash' paper really appeals to my urge to 'reduce/reuse/recycle'.
Having a dvd enclosed is a wonderful bonus. Sometimes it really helps to see someone working the steps.
One difficulty : step 7 of the Paper Hearts directions did not make sense to me. I had to ignore it and figure out how to get to step 8 myself. Could be my lack of understanding, or an inherent difficulty in trying to portray a 3-d move in a flat diagram; but my paper did not produce a 'large pocket'. ... Read more
