5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful resource for parents of twins
This book is a wonderful resource for parents of twins.I would recommend this to anyone having a multiples. It is very complete and has something for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wealth of information, a real treasure
(...) this book covers EVERYTHING FOR EVERYBODY! It will take you from pregnancy through the college years and beyond, and has information for the stay-at-home parent as well as the working parent, for those dealing with special needs to those coping with multiple loss. The information/advice is sensible because it is based upon the experiences of mothers of multiple birth children who belong to the National Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs. This group definitely knows what parenting twins, triplets, quads and more is all about! The highlighted quotes included in the book show that this is a book written about real-life situations, with real-life solutions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Thorough Reference for the Multiple Mom
I just read this book and my twins are 8 months old, but I wish I knew about it when I was pregnant. This book covers everything from feelings you may experience when you first find out your expecting twins to how close adult twins are to each other. It draws much of its information from surveys filled out by members of twins and multiples clubs throughout the nation so the info is first-hand, down-in-the-trenches info!Throughout the book there are interesting and helpful stories from moms of multiples. This is good, useful info. Also, the book has lots of interesting statistics about twins such as the fact that the Yoruba tribe in Africa has a twinning rate of 1 in 22 births!Wow! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent!
The title literally says it all!! It answered ALL my questions and more! Would recommend this to anyone having twins!

1-0 out of 5 stars Provided Incorrect Information
This book is not helpful, in fact, some of the information is incorrect. I would not recommend this book. The information that I found unhelful or incorrect included:
- the chapter on nutritian doesn't provide any dietary guidelines on what to actually eat!
- recommends doing sit-ups during pregnancy. As your abdominal muscles separate to accommodate your growing belly sit-ups are not advised and can actually be harmful.
- BUT: the most disappointing was the recommendation to take a folic acid or vitamin B12 supplement (which was repeted several times throughout the book so clearly not a typo). I would have expected a OB/GYN to know that folic acid is vitamin B9 and NOT B12. Vitamin B12 is Cobalamin NOT folic acid. I hope that no pregnant mothers have been confused by this very harmful misinformation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond expectations
Was very pleased with the condition of the book which was delivered in an excellent timeframe

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok book, there are better ones out there.
This book was ok, I usually can't get my hands off these types of books, however I find myself stopping to read and putting the book down, it's text like and not as interesting to read as other books.

1-0 out of 5 stars AKA: Everything you need to worry and freak out about during your twin pregnancy
I bought several books on twins. This one was not worth the extra money, as I could have EASILY gotten the exact same information from two other books that covered ALL the topics included in this book, but which were written in a more accessible and positive way.The first was: When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads, Revised Edition by Barbara Luke When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads, Revised Edition: Proven Guidelines for a Healthy Multiple Pregnancy and Twinspiration: Real-Life Advice From Pregnancy Through the First Year by Cheryl Lage.Twinspiration: Real-Life Advice From Pregnancy Through the First Year (for Parents of Twins and Multiples).I would also recommend "What to expect when you're expecting" What to Expect When You're Expecting: 4th Edition. That book has a great readability and pretty comprehensive information overall about pregnancy in general.

I would say between these four books, the book by Dr. Leiter (everything you need to know to have a healthy...) is beyond redundant information. The thing I disliked most about Dr. Leiter's book was that it was so sterile and medically based that it came off very negative. All the books had the same information about possible complications and so on, but her presentation made it seem like pregnancy was going to be all gloom and doom with nothing but hurdles to jump and that hoping to have a normal healthy pregnancy was really unrealistic.

It also lacked practical advice and real world advice.Every time a little case story was offered about a woman's pregnancy it was negative and showcased how worried the mother was or how something she did lead to complications. This is important information, but it isn't offered in a way that allows for the reader to feel like the problem is actually rare or avoidable.I feel that I spent a bit of time reading this book and felt more worried about my pregnancy afterwards than before, even though I don't have any complications and my babies are doing really well.I guess my point is, I can worry plenty on my own, and I'd rather stick to books that offer the same information about problems in risks in a way that is more neutral.

You can get every bit of information in this book in the other books. If you are looking for a medically based book for information, "When you're expecting twins..." By Dr. Luke above is a friendlier read and has the SAME information offered with alternatives, not just doom.It also offers lots more information specific to Multiple pregnancies, lots of nutrition advice, and was written with both positive stories from patients as well as potholes some women in her practice faced. But after the negative, Dr. Luke would go into how realistic that problem might be for the reader and how it might be avoided. It was far more balanced and positive to read.

I also thought that "Twinspirations" written by a mom, was a fun book to read and had LOTS of practical advice as well as family situations, things her husband thought about, things I would have never thought of myself, and I actually laughed several times with the author at things she wrote about. This was a very positive and helpful book. This was the book I asked my husband to read, because it was most readable and practical and fun.It also brought up a lot of family issues, like finances, handling the household work, child care, and practical life/household situations that a medical style informational book doesn't usually even touch upon.

Really, there's nothing really that bad about "Everything you need to know..." but there are just other books that do the same thing FAR better.I know I planned on buying several books and I could have left this one out. ... Read more

Product Description
In the past 10 years the number of twin births has risen 52 percent andthe number of higher-order multiples has increased more than 400 percent! Written by a perinatal nurse specializing in multiple birth education, The Multiple Pregnancy Sourcebook explores the physical, financial, and emotional challenges of this high-risk condition. Included is an extensive list of support resources.Amazon.com Review
Your reaction might have been something like this: "Hurrah! I'm pregnant! What? TWINS?!" Being pregnant with two (or more!) is different from being pregnant with one, and The Multiple Pregnancy Sourcebook tells it like it is, from weight gain to proper preparation for bringing your duplicate (or triplicate) bundles of joy home from the hospital. Author Nancy Bowers couldn't be more qualified to write such a book: not only is she a nurse and teacher of birth classes, she is also the mother of her own set of twins.

This book covers the same material as any pregnancy guide, and in approximately the same order. Starting with proper nutrition and continuing through the standard routines of visits and testing, it finishes up with the actual labor, postnatal care, and a walk-through of those first few days at home. Because all this information is aimed specifically at multiple pregnancies, you'll also find information about subjects like selective reduction, bed rest, and the chances of having at least one baby delivered by cesarean section. Through it all, Bowers's wise and experienced tone manages to soothe while educating. Bowers emphasizes that "multiple pregnancy is demanding work, but the rewards are matchless." She frequently encourages parents to seek out support, whether through a parenting group or a counselor, and provides an excellent guide at the end of the book that offers contact information for all sorts of potential help.

Destined to become a classic for parents of multiples, this sourcebook is one you'll want to keep handy throughout your pregnancy and beyond. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-Have for First Time Mothers to Multiples
This book was a great read for a first-time mother to twins. It gave purely facts and information on what to expect throughout pregnancy up to delivery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This is an excellent book.It discusses everything that you should be aware of while pregnant with multiples. It discusses all aspects of what could go wrong, as well as what you can expect during pregnancy, birth and afterwards.I highly recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful or informative
I found this book to be lacking in information as well as very repetitive.Much of the information she includes is no different than what can be found in a regular pregnancy book.In addition, she feels the need to define words that, in my opinion, if you don't know the definition of, you should probably not have gotten pregnant. Also, this book is in desperate need of a revision.Nothing huge, but in the section about bed rest, she references watching videos on your VCR as well as programming your doctor's number into your speed dial.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped me a lot through my multiple pregnancy
This was one of my favorite books that I read while I was pregnant with my twin girls.I've recommended it to anyone I know having multiples. It was very informative without giving too much info that would freak a pregnant woman out.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Multiple Pregnancy Sourcebook: Pregnancy and the First Days with Twins, Triplets, and More

-Twin languages and their effect on speech development
-Treating multiples "equally" without homogenizing them
-How to ask for and manage help-all parents of multiples need it!
-Separation and independence: getting the right mix

The increased use of fertility drugs combined with the trend toward later motherhood has made multiple births more common than ever. In frank but reassuring language, Dr. Bryan guides parents through the inimitable journey of parenting twins, triplets, and more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good general overview, perhaps lacking on details for expectant parents
This book was well written and easy to read, and contains very interesting facts about twins and the special challenges both the parents and twins will face.I found it very engaging and interesting, and a quick read - but it is more of a general overview than an in-depth guide.

The other reviewers state that it focuses too much on statistics about twins, but this is only in the first two (out of fourteen!) chapters of the book and frankly, I found those chapters very interesting.

This book does contain advice for raising twins, but I think it focuses more on their emotional/mental development (ie, from pre-school on up) rather than the day-to-day struggles of the first few years.

As a parent of twins who are now 2 yrs old, I find this book engaging - both for the technical info and because it has reaffirmed my own observations. But I suppose if you are still expecting your twins this book may not contain the details you are looking for.

Buy this book for the grandparents! ;-)

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Don't throw away yor money on this book. As an expecting mother of identical twins, I bought this book expecting to find in-depth information about multiple pregnancies, and practical advice for once the babies are born. Though the author is an "expert" on twins, she doesn't provide a lot of information. Mostly concentrates on how twins are conceived, the differences between fraternal and identical, and statistics involving multiple births. She doesn't explain why a multiple pregnancy is considered high-risk, or which are the increased risks of this sort of pregnancy. And when talking about the twins themselves, she doesn't give any practical advice. For example, when talking about breastfeeding twins, she says that it can be done, she mentions that there are at least 6 feeding positions, but she doesn't describe them!! The same happens with sleep issues, she says some twins will adapt fast to a regular schedule while others will find it harder, but she doesn't give any tips on how to get them to sleep through the night.

I'm not sure who the author targeted as an audience for this book, as a future mother of multiples I can say it's not at all helpful for parents of multiples, but it seems very basic for professionals as well.

If you need a good book about multiples for parents, that covers pregnancy, birth, and early childhood I recommend that you check out "Keys to parenting multiples" by Karen Gromada and Mary Hurlburt, which is very thorough and offers lots of practical tips for handling multiples, from rasing them as separate individuals to breastfeeding, and handling them at different age periods. It also covers pregnancy in a complete way, detailing risks, explaining procedures, and offering advice.

1-0 out of 5 stars Looking for help in all the wrong places
This book contains very little useful information for those of us expecting multiples or who have given birth to multiples. It focuses primarily on twins and the background of the frequency of twins, how twinsare formed and the difference between fraternal and identical twins. Thebook gives no practical advice on maintaining a multiple pregnancy or howto overcome the difficulties of raising multiples. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Reminder of the Joy in Raising Twins
My goodness! I had no idea that I had written this book! But as a mother of twins I could definitely say that so many of the experiences, joys and obstacles relayed throughout the stores in Twins and More haveoccurred in my own home.

This has to be my favorite Chicken Soup Book to date.Yes, I know I have a new favorite quite often but that is just a wonderful testament to the great Chicken Soup for theSoul Concept.

The Twins and More covers such topics as Expecting Multiples, Sleep Deprivation, Seeing Double, A Special bond, Twin Trials, It's Triplets, Grand parenting Twins, A Different Path to Parenthood, Double Trouble, Double Fun and Lessons Learned.

I think it is telling that the last section is Lessons Learned because as the mom of identical 6 1/2 year twins I can tell you, quite honestly, that I don't realize that "I" have learned the lesson until almost the end anyway!

I am most grateful that Twins and More reminded me of how beautiful and valuable the gift of being a twin is for my daughters. As a mom... you get so busy in the mundane and the routine of daily life that you forget to stop and see that right before you there are two beautiful little beings that God created. Yes, they might be coloring your white walls in bright red and pink flowers at the time you realize this but what a blessing anyway.

I enjoyed the openness that mothers, fathers, grandparents and siblings had in sharing their life and stories with multiples. It was an eye-opener, a reminder and tummy tickler all in one. If you know a family that has or is having twins pick up a copy of Twins and More...give them a smile...they'll need it...because raising multiples is definitely a joy and a challenge.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as great as the other chicken soup books...
I'm a mom of twin daughters so when I saw this, I immediately picked it up. I've read at least 3 other chicken soup books and LOVED them, so maybe I just had high expectations? I didn't find any of these stories particularly touching or inspirational. I'm not sure if i'm just incredibly lucky not to have any twin horror stories but I could not relate to most of the people in the book. I was just not impressed.

It might be a better read for a grandparent or someone else related to a twin, not a mom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
If you have read any of the other Chicken Soup series...this falls right in line. The book has touching stories that make you laugh, cry and feel as if someone else has gone throught EXACTLY what you went through.Excellent choice!

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Chicken Soup For The Soul!
This entertaining book is sure to delight any parent of twins or multiples! I had been looking forward to reading my copy, but as I have four little ones of my own (two of which are twins) and not much time, I thought it would take me forever to find a spare moment to take a gander at it. But, let me tell you, once I did, I was completely captivated by all of the earnest accounts from parents (and even grandparents) of multiples that contributed.

This collection of short stories covers everything from finding out about carrying more than one, to tips on how to organize your time when caring for twins and multiples. Some are poignant and heartfelt, while others are witty and full of good advice. I sometimes felt like someone took a passage from my own life with twins and told an account of it.

Anyone who has ever experienced the world of twins or more will find themselves relating to several of these wonderful anecdotes. And, you know, that's real "Chicken Soup for the Soul"!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected...
When we found out that we were expecting twins, a friend with twins recommended this book to us. We found that the book was not very realistic for the every day person. Although the author's story was intersting to read about, we didn't find it at all helpful in preparing for our twins. For a more realistic look at life with twins, I would highly recommend 'Ready or not, here we come' by Elizabeth Lyons.

1-0 out of 5 stars I had to give it one star because there was no option for zero...
Okay this is my first Amazon review ever. You know how you read the reviews, and even if they're bad, you get the book anyhow?Try to give it a chance or whatever?Okay trust me on this one.DON'T DO IT.Right now, the book has a two-star average on Amazon--and I think that's generous at best. Not only does this woman have the special chaise lounge (as mentioned by another reviewer) that's carted EVERYWHERE for her, she also has breakfast (some fancy egg white omelet and extra crunchy hash browns) made for her every morning, maternity clothes crafted expressly to fit her body--and when she decides that the shower adjacent to her new nursery isn't gonna cut it, she has a bathtub put in instead.Huh?Oh and she suggests 24-hour baby nurse care and someone to come do your laundry twice a week.Beg your pardon? Can she suggest the lotto numbers, too?The limited medical advice can be found elsewhere, in other books with actual substance.

1-0 out of 5 stars get a life, jane!
As another reader put it, Jane will never know what it's REALLY like to have twins-most of us can't afford a baby nurse, let alone a nutritionist, personal trainer, chef, etc. She's unbelievable! Do not buy this book unless you want to be depressed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting But Not Helpful
If you like Jane Seymour and want to know how rich and famous people have twins, buy this book.If you are looking for realistic and practical advice on twins, I'd check out "When You Are Expecting Twins, Triplets or Quads: A Complete Resource".Jane Seymour's book was entertaining but did not offer much practical advice for the rest of us.It is basically a narration of her pregnancy, down to the details of how she managed to work on a set while pregnant (she had a personal nurse). The book is entertaining if you are a fan. There are some interesting pictures of her with her twins.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save Your Money
Sorry Jane!I know she probably meant well, but let's face it, the majority of us do not have access to her style of living. If you're curious about how the more wealthy people live, go for it.If you're looking for more practical information, you can save money by buying "Multiple Blessings", packed with much more realistic advice and so much more helpful.I have to admit, I did get a good laugh (sarcastically speaking) out of the "can you believe in all our planning we forgot to put a bathtub in the babies bathroom. We immediately hired a contractor to put one in".If only I had that problem! ... This is a great book to read if you've just found out you are pregnant with twins and are trying to adjust to the shock. When I discovered I was having twins I went into overdrive on the reading front, trying to find books that would tell me how on earth I would cope.A lot of them just frightened me with high risk pregnancy statistics and ridiculous pregnancy guidelines on diet and exercise that didn't match what my GP was advising.

I don't know how practically useful this book will be when my twins are born, but it was simply a funny, reassuring, not at all frightening book that I really enjoyed. It helped me to relax a bit, stop worrying and try to see the lighter side of having twins...for now at least. ... Read more

    Product Description

A leading expert on twins delves into the stories behind her research to reveal the profound joys and real-life traumas of twelve remarkable sets of twins, triplets, and quadruplets.

Indivisible by Two introduces us to an assortment of memorable characters, from the "Fireman Twins"--brothers who, though reared separately, are astonishingly similar in personality and behavioral traits--to the twin sisters who overcame one twin's infertility by having the other serve as her surrogate mother. We meet one of the few identical brother-sister pairs in the world after one of two sisters was surgically transformed into a man, and identical triplet brothers, only one of whom is gay while the others are straight. We see uniquely blended families--identical twin brothers marrying identical twin sisters, and Chinese twins adopted by different Canadian families yet raised as sisters.

Being a twin can also render the experience of historical tragedy uniquely painful. We meet Stepha and Annetta, survivors of Josef Mengele's heinous experiments in Auschwitz, and untangle the troubled lifelong tie between Jack and Oskar, born in the 1930s to a Jewish father and a German Gentile mother, one raised as a Jew in Trinidad and the other as a Catholic and a member of the Hitler Youth in Nazi Germany.

Segal unravels these stories and others with an eye for the challenges that life as a twin (or triplet or quadruplet) can pose to parents, friends, and spouses, as well as the twins themselves. These moving stories remind us how incompletely any theory explains real life--twin or not.

3-0 out of 5 stars it was ok
Interesting enough, but the author went on and on and on for about four pages after I thought each chapter was done.

1-0 out of 5 stars Critique of Twins
This is a fascinating study of many types of twins - the most interesting of which are identical twins who were separated at birth and reunited later in life!Being a Gemini, I have always been entranced by twins and this book is excellent in fulfilling that fascination. The author writes with skill, empathy and obvious love of and painstaking research of her subject!4 Thumbs up!

4-0 out of 5 stars fascinating book about twins
Twin expert Nancy Segal has managed to track down and interview various sets of interesting twins -- those who survived Mengele's horrific experiments during the Holocaust, "the firemen twins," who were separated at birth and twins who married other twins. I found the resulting book so fascinating, I devoured it in one weekend.

Congratulations on a job well done, Nancy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting stories, but badly needs editing help!!
The twins, triplets and quadruplets profiled here are fascinating. There are all kinds of interesting situations written about---twins seperated at birth, quadruplets that are actually double sets of identical twins, selectively mute twins, identical twins knowingly adopted by two different families and many more.I wish I could say I loved this book, but as with the author's other book on twins, and even more here, there is a terrible need of better editing!

The author has several quirks to her writing. She throws as many details as she can into each paragraph, often with a pretty much unrelated idea at the end of one!She loves to quote people, which is nice, but she quotes them with abandon, whether the quotes really have much to do with what is being written about. She describes people's looks and what they are wearing to an odd extent, and she often analyses people's feelings based on single statements.I think she's a remarkable researcher and that she truly cares about the people she writes about, but she is not a writer at heart, and she needs a little more help making her writing as good as her topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb Follow Up to Entwined Lives
Dr. Segal has given us yet another delightful chance to learn more about who we are through the study of twins, this time using their unique stories. This book is a smooth read about different sets of multiples. Each story is compelling in its presentation of a different aspect of twins or other multiples. As an example, the story of triplets, two of which were stricken with multiple sclerosis, tells us so much about how nature (genetics) and nurture (environment) mix their influences on us. Just when you start to think one aspect starts to dominate the other one nudges itself into the human swirl that we are.

This book is a superb follow up to her more technical work shown in her first book, Entwined Lives. In contrast to that book, which was loaded with scientific facts and academic studies, she continues to tell us of the importance of twin studies through the lives of twins with unusual stories. Found in these stories are many of the conclusions and observations made in the first book.

Dr. Segal has a knack of packing a lot into a few words. I stopped marking the important sentences because every paragraph seemed to be a highlight. Also in this effort she reveals more about herself and her own twinship. It is obvious in this book her important research has resulted from both the outside and inside perspectives of twins.

This is a must read for any twin or anyone desiring to learn more about how we become who we are. It blasts past the typical twin anecdotes with new meaning as well as depth. Being an identical twin myself, I found both of Dr. Segal's books have helped me immensely in understanding my own twinship, and perhaps more importantly, the loss of my twin some years ago. I have found much comfort in knowing how and why natural clones are not perfect copies of each other.

1-0 out of 5 stars Triplet Mom puts this book to the test....
The concept of this book is a good idea, but I think it falls short in many areas. The times printed for on each day cannot possibly meet everyone's needs, it would be better to leave this area blank so the parents can write in their own schedule - I spent everyday crossing out the printed info for 3 pages (1 for each kid) then writing in the times I needed. As a new triplet Mom I really didn't have the time to spare.

We ended up making our own forms on the computer, it seemed like such a waste to have a page per day - per baby. We preferred combining all 3 babies on one page per day, it was a quick reference for tired parents just trying to make sure they have kept all of the babies fed and changed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please don't waste your money
I spent the [money] thinking this was just the ticket. What a waste. I am getting my money back. The charts make no sense. There's not even space for separate notes on each baby. It is useless for me (I have triplets). I'm sure it was helpful for the person who designed it, which is what I am going to do now - design my own. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't have written it better myself.
As a mother of triplets, I truly enjoyed reading this book. It is important for mothers of multiples to know that there are other people out there who understand their situation.I can especially relate to the chapter in which the author describes some of the ridiculous questions that people will ask you when they see you with triplets, many of which are extremely personal! I highly recommend this book for any mother of multiples.

5-0 out of 5 stars great reading!
This is an excellent book! As a mother of twins, I ordered this book because I was curious of how it would have been with triplets. I almost devoured every page of it, together with my breakfast (my only "free time" of the day)! Other than the lupus, everything is so close to what we have experienced with the twins and an older child! I even bought this book for a friend, who is expecting twins, because Mrs.Hall gives youa great description of what raising multiples means.

2-0 out of 5 stars We need a book about TYPICAL triplet pregnancies!
I read this book in it's entirety and it scared me to death.THis woman obviously had many health issues besides being pregnant with triplets.I don't think this paints a picture of a typical triplets pregnancy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heart-warming and humorous
Great reading for those planning to have children, those who aren't planning to and for those who already have them. This book covers the joys and tribulations of a problem pregnancy, and the arrival of triplets.Mrs.Hall tells their story matter-of-factly and with humor. It includes achapter written by Mr. Hall telling his side of the story. Keeping theirsense of humor has been a major factor in keeping their sanity when facedwith birthing and raising triplets. They have done an excellent job withtheir children and educating others of the joys of multiples. I hope therewill be a sequel to this story. I'd enjoy keeping up with their adventures! A must read! ... Read more
