Covering global threats such as climate change, population growth, and loss of biodiversity, as well as national, state, and local problems of environmental pollution, energy use, and natural resource use and conservation, this exciting and unique text covers U.S. policy-making processes, the legislative and administrative settings for policy decisions, the role of interest groups and public opinion in environmental politics, and the public policies that result.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good service
Product arrived on time and in good condition. Service was better than expected from this seller.

4-0 out of 5 stars detailed history
Kraft explains the history of the environmental policies of the US federal government, going up to late 2005. It is a detailed analysis, with copious footnotes pointing to original sources.

The narrative describes a constant tension between the US electorate wanting a cleaner environment and the unwillingness to accept higher taxes or other costs to achieve this. In some ways, it summarises aptly the various federal Acts, in how they were formulated, and the amount of enforcement that went into them.

Other tensions are shown to exist in such agencies as the Bureau for Land Management. Which has often tended towards allowing extensive resource use of its land, in contrast with the Forest Service. The book's characterisation of the BLM may be a little ironic. As it has come under constant criticism from ranchers and miners for what they see as overly restrictive policies.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rosenbaum is clearer
If you're looking for a basic environmental policy book, this isn't bad. It's got good charts, etc. However, as far as clarity goes, the Rosenbaum book by the same (or a similar) title is better. It has fewer graphs and charts but makes the points better. ... Read more

The book I received was somewhat wet, which may have been due to rain water seeping inside the packet somehow so some of the pages became damp and got stuck together.Otherwise,it was OK.

3-0 out of 5 stars AP Gov Students Thoughts
I am an 11th grader using this book in my AP Government class, and I have not been thourougly impressed with this book. It is incredibly dense and hard to follow. (It usually takes me over two hours to do a Chapters worth of notes.) The vocabulary words are rarely defined and usually lack contextual clues as well.

If this book is to be used for a high school AP class, then it should come with more resources for either the teacher (so they have a thorough understanding of the book) or else for the students.

From what I can tell, this book has a lot of useful information, and seems to be a decent resource if the students and teacher are willing to put the time into it. Unfortunately, with an AP test four months away, time is in short supply.

Product Description
Written by a distinguished group of internationally renowned scholars, this volume provides a comprehensive and contemporary overview of the major issues dominating British politics. The book not only maps the current political agenda, but actively contributes to the debates surrounding British politics in the international community at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

British Politics Today examines key developments in British politics such as the shift in focus by parties away from their traditional voting base towards 'consumers' at large, and the rise in identity voting following devolution. The book is characterized by a broad and inclusive conception of British politics, resolutely refusing to reduce political analysis to a narrowly conceived sphere of government, and it explores contemporary British political developments in the broader context of European, international and global dynamics. Some of the major issues discussed include the Belfast agreement, Britain's future in Europe, the political economy of contemporary Britain, the representation of women within the British polity, the politics of welfare reform, and the ethics of foreign policy.

This collection provides a valuable teaching resource for courses on British politics, as well as a crucial focus for debate by academics and researchers in this dynamic field. It will be essential reading for all those interested in the political science, political economy and political sociology of contemporary Britain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
Love the way this book generates an unrivaled wealth of knowledge about government and politics. Nice essay form. Love the look of the book. Perfect font size! perfect!

4-0 out of 5 stars Review for Principle and Practice
Great book, although it can be hard to follow at times. The essays are very specific which is helpful in determining different views on certain issues such as the legal system, abortion, federalism, etc. I used this book in my American Government class and it was very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book With Lots of Useful Info
This book has a lot of information regarding political trends.I highly reccomend it to beginners that want a strong background in American Politics, and want to be informed about innerworkings of the public policy process. As a Political Science major, I do quite a bit of reading myself and know the difference between a book that is utterly dense or not. From my experience, this book is an easy read for those that are analytical thinkers and apply logic and reasoning to their lives in relation to political science.

4-0 out of 5 stars diverse readings
The editors give the reader a timely historical perspective on how American politics is played. Some papers are classics. Notably James Madison's Federalist #10 and #51 Papers. Now some two hundred years old. These discuss how the checks and balances in the Constitution act to restrain legislators from exploiting the nation, and on how the very diversity of a large republic can reduce the chances of factionalism prevailing. Though the latter argument is perhaps somewhat questionable.

The book also has lectures from two current Supreme Court judges, Scalia and Breyer. Plus pivotal court decisions like Roe vs. Wade from the 1970s.

The sweep of the readings is a good indicator of the multivaried nature of politics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars OLD but Good
There's nothing like buying the older edition of a textbook for a class and save $40-$50! Well, that's about it. I bought this book for less than $5 and now I get to keep this resource.

It's not the most concise and interesting of textbooks. There are plenty of insights and side "stories" to highlight the application of a certain concept. Overall, it's not a bad book to keep on your shelf for less than $10. At one given moment it was valued at over $40! Anyway, enough of my number crunches. Buy the book if you want to refresh, remind, or introduce yourself to the Courts system.

3-0 out of 5 stars Eh.
Ordered this book for a class... would not otherwise read it.Tries to be "hip" with references to movies and tv shows, but is overly vague and redundant.

4-0 out of 5 stars great text on the judicial process including interest groups
I thought that the book would be hard reading because of its title, however the book is a very easy read and has short cases to read that puts the information in each chapter in true context.I have enjoyed learning about judicial process, interest groups, and those who have made history presenting rule of thought and how courts, judges, prosecutors and defense attorneys work and research.

3-0 out of 5 stars Content good, practice tests unhelpful
I found the content of this book was fairly helpful. I wish there had been more terms, but for a review, it was good.
At the end of every chapter there is a "review" section with 5 multiple choice questions and two free responses. I found the multiple choices questions okay; the answer explanations horrible. Sometimes the the answer would simply restate the question and add in the answer. Some parts did have full blown answers explanations, with reasoning behind each letter choice. Most had only one sentence explanations. The chapter written responses often were one short sentence, with no elaboration of the question- which made it confusing as to what was being asked. The explanations were even less helpful, when they were only a list of words.

While the practice tests are more in depth, I found them easier than other practice tests I have taken. There were a few mistakes, one question was repeated in the second test. Actuallya lot of questions were seemed really repetitive over the two tests. Although the answers are better, they are not as in dept as other practice books.

Overall, get this book for the review material. If you're looking to take practice tests, and to actually learn from them, I'd recommend you look at another brand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs an Update
Comparative Politics of the Third World: Linking Concepts and Casesis a good book with a lot of information as the previous reviewer has indicated, however because it's 2007 printing, it needs to have a supplementry text or articles to update the area between were the book leaves off and modern day. However that glaring weakness accepted, this book does provide very good and detailed histories of thecountries in the book : Iran, China, Indonesia, Mexico, Turkey, Peru, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and maybe one or two more that escape me at the moment.

This book also provides detailed chapters on problems facing countries of the developing world like revolutions, political violence, pollution, globalization and it's impact on the developing world and other areas of conflict and/or concearn. Again, the book because of it's datedness fails to account for current events like the election protests in Iran or Uighar violence in China.

3-0 out of 5 stars dense
this book is very informative and is a perfect blend of the general and the ideosentricies of the politics of the developing world with enough small case studies to back up its assumptions, but the book has no clear structure. It also doesn't illistrate all of its conclusions clearly leaving the reader with a feeling of "okay, what the most important part of this section and how exactly does the evidence correlate with its conclusions?" ...
