Product Description
Andy Warhol is recognized today as the most important exponent of the Pop Art movement. He overturned the traditional understanding of art and placed in its stead a concept that retracts the individuality of the artist. Warhol was a critical observer of American society, exposing his compatriots' consumerism in his paintings ("Campbell-" and "Brillo" series), as well as their fascination for sensational journalism. In 1963 Warhol founded his "Factory" in New York, literally a manufactory of ideas and work, which influenced film in the 1960s, published the influential magazine "Interview" in the late 1970s, and also produced Warhol's own artwork: Warhol conceived the idea, and a "worker" in his factory carried it out. The work remained (consciously) unsigned - a fact which nevertheless did nothing to diminish Warhol's reputation. He once complained that rich New Yorkers would willingly hang his "Electric Chain" in their living rooms - as long as its colours co-ordinated with the wallpaper and draperies. ... Read more

Product Description

Announcing the new Princeton University Art Museum Monograph Series:
Princeton University Art Museum Monographs is a new series of in-depth explorations of the museum's rich collections. Beautifully designed and produced, these books by leading and emerging scholars offer new insights and perspectives on a single work or group of works from Princeton's distinguished permanent collection.
Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Tom Wesselmann, Robert Indiana, and Alex Katz have all come to define the Pop art movement that emerged in America in the 1960s. This handsomely illustrated book focuses on 40 understudied and rarely seen late paintings, works on paper, and sculptures by these influential artists in the collection of the Princeton University Art Museum.
Pop Art offers fresh insights into the ways in which artists radically transformed the mediums of painting and sculpture. For example, Lichtenstein is repositioned as a classical “studio artist”; Wesselmann is shown to be playfully preoccupied with academic genres; and Indiana is interpreted less as a Pop artist than as a folk artist in a mass-cultural context. This important book also features an engaging introduction by Hal Foster that places these new interpretations in the context of the history of Pop art and its critical literature.

Product Description
From cave paintings to the Renaissance, Impressionism to Pop Art, The Collins Big Book of Art takes you on a journey through the history of art in a delightful and informative way. With more than 1,200 works of art represented, this is both a coffee table book and an educational experience; cross-referenced throughout, and including the following sections and features:

A Chronology spans the history of art, step by step. from 38,000 B.C. to the present. Pieces from around the world are juxtaposed to place them in historical context. Each is labeled with date, country, title, artist, materials, size, and current location. In addition, each piece of art is tied to its movement and key themes, which are pursued in greater detail in the other sections of the book.

Turning Points, interspersed throughout the chronology, delve into both the major artistic movements and highlight the technical breakthroughs which changed how artists of the time worked, and affected how they saw the world. For example, the glass lens allowed more lifelike portraiture in the early Renaissance, the ability to put paint into tubes gave the Impressionists the freedom to work outdoors, and Freud’s work in psychoanalysis had a major impact on Surrealism.

The second part of the book explores enduring Themes of art, taking a subject and showing how artists through the ages have depicted it. Various approaches to portraits and landscapes, allegory and religion, still life and abstraction are compared and contrasted, using carefully selected images to illuminate each point made.

In addition, an extensive Reference section allows the reader to access information in numerous ways; the multiple indices include a glossary of terms, artists registry, index of museums, and more.

With easy navigation and an engaging presentation of the material, The Collins Big Book of Art will inform, inspire, and entertain art enthusiasts at any level of understanding and appreciation. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Just a very general art history book
If you're serious about art, save your money. This is a very basic art history book, quite juvenile in my opinion. But if you're looking for a crash course in art, this might do the trick. The layout is also somewhat confusing; structured like a long running time-line throughout with very brief descriptions of genres in the later 1/2 of the book. You get what you paid for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really like it, but Not what I expected
The book is very well made and illustrated, and the quality of the images are excellent. However, I expected more of a text book, not an illustrated history of art, but overall it's a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Throwing away prejudices
Most people tend to think that pop culture is not appropriate for kids. But I think it is necessary for kids to have an adequate eye of appreciation toward secular culture because they should be able to learn to pertinently enjoy creative art works. If you have negative thoughts about pop culture, please read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book in the series
I make it a point to collect Joyce Raimondo's books. Make it Pop like her previous books in the Art Explorers series have proved to be an excellent tool in art education. I use it in my college courses for my students studying to be teachers. It provides clear examples of appropriate language and art technique for inspiring conversations and art making in this case about Pop Art. For my college students new to providing art lessons with their students it is a valuable resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Promises learning and fun.
Ages 5-12 and parents and teachers will appreciate this unusual focus: a collection of art activities for this age group that provides a visual focus on the basic elements of Pop Art. Six artists plus the author provide a survey of Pop Art elements and explore the stories behind major art works - then moves beyond to encourage kids to create their own Pop Art. Product Description
Andy Warhol said about his road trip to Los Angeles in 1963: "The farther West we drove, the more Pop everything looked on the highways." In this original and engaging book, Cécile Whiting examines what Pop looked like when it left the highbrow cloisters of Manhattan's art galleries and ventured westward to the sprawling suburbs of Los Angeles. She finds that the artists who made California their home in the 1960s did not abandon their paint brushes for tennis rackets and surfboards, but rather created in their works a new and different sense of space, the urban experience, and popular culture.
Whiting shows how artists such as Vija Celmins, Llyn Foulkes, David Hockney, Dennis Hopper, Allan Kaprow, Claes Oldenburg, Ed Ruscha, and Judy Chicago helped to shape the identity of Los Angeles as an emerging art center, while avoiding in their representation of the city the clichés of both its boosters and its detractors. Delving deep into the southern California aesthetic sensibility, Pop L.A. recounts how the artists transformed the image of the city in works that focused on the ocean and landscape, suburban life, dilapidated houses in aging neighborhoods, streets and parking lots, and public buildings such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The common bond of place, for Whiting, gives coherence to the varied experiments in the visual and performance arts that altered the cultural terrain during this pivotal time. The Los Angeles art scene in the 1960s inspired a new generation of architectural writing about the metropolis and its debased sister city, Las Vegas.Over the course of the decade, the conception of the city pioneered by artists in Los Angeles spread beyond the city of angels to characterize cultural life in the United States. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book if you love the movie
When you have seen the movie, and you want to know more about the making of it, this book will give you a wonderful insight. The creation of the characters and the world in which UP! plays is beautifully depicted and described.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for the Pixar fan
These 'Art Of ...' books are not exactly what someone might think. They are not the art of the film, per se, but the art that was used by the creators along the way while they made their final decisions about what everything, from characters to backgrounds to heroes and villains, will eventually look like when the film is done. They're better suited for art and film students to see the creative process in action than fans of the film looking to relive a special moment that meant so much to them while they watched it on the screen.

That said, they are a wonderful addition to your library, and I can't recommend the Pixar ones highly enough.:)

Product Description
Sampler 2 is far more than just a remix. Like its predecessors, it captures and celebrates some of the most innovative and challenging graphic design work from the contemporary music scene, yet offers an even more penetrating and comprehensive examination of radical music packaging. Traditionally occupying the margins of graphic design practice, the record cover is increasingly recognized as a testing ground for innovative visual expression, inspired by, and amplifying our enjoyment of, the music itself. Sampler 2 features the best graphics from cutting edge designers who boldly reject the notion of the record sleeve as ephemeral packaging in favor of creating memorable works of art.

The book includes work by leading graphic designers such as Stefan Sagmeister, Designers Republic, Farrow Design, Peter Saville, and Rudy Vanderlands, as well as showcasing some of the most groundbreaking designs for small underground labels from around the world. In an introductory essay, Intro co-founder and Creative Director Adrian Shaughnessy identifies and evaluates recent trends in music graphics, examining the position of small labels in relation to the commercial imperatives of large, monolithic record companies. He explores the idea of 'authenticity', revealing how sleeve designers are departing from mainstream imagery and digital technology, in a return to the 'real'. Issues also addressed include the convergence of graphic design and contemporary art practice, and the role of the musician in the sleeve design process.

Sampler 2 is an inspirational resource for graphic designers and those working in visual communication, as well as appealing to anyone within the record industry and to music fans worldwide.

Product Description
The alienation between high culture and its public is a fundamental conflict of art in our times. Writer Bettina Funcke, the United States editor of the cutting-edge British art journal Parkett, develops a theory of contemporary art in response to our moment, when artists and critics must respond to art's unprecedented popularity. Selecting texts from important philosophers and art theorists of the last century, including Friedrich Nietzsche, Jacques Rancière, Theodor W. Adorno, Clement
Greenberg, Benjamin Buchloh, and Boris Groys, Funcke uses the theoretical framework they provide to explore a dialectic of art propelled by tension between the enduring history of art and the domineering presence of mass culture. Funcke's work has also been published in Afterall, Artforum, Public and Texte zur Kunst.

5-0 out of 5 stars A window into the blending oa technology and art
The Art of Terminator Salvation is an incredible book that evokes that curiosity of wanting to know what goes into making such visually stunning technologically advanced movies, information that can't be sourced through DVD's or movies, these books walk you through step by step in the creation of the characters the special effects actors and crew. In this book the process of creating that world is superbly illustrated in a future world ravaged by a nuclear holocaust. A 240 page hardcover massive book more than suitable for any coffee table Author Tara Bennett who has given us a number of great visual books including 300. This book (I keep forgetting there is also the movie companion that is equally presented) has page after page of dramatically visual images created to illustrate the settings, sequences, characters and machines. It has innumerable pictures of designs for the terminators T-1, T-600, aerostats, hunter-killers, hydrobots and transports, harvesters, moto-terminators and as well as the T-70. All are presented in 3D modelling, paintings and sketches. Very little in the way of text besides captions, to explain the thought process behind the designs. Interesting sections on the development and concept sketches from early on. The final evolution of the aerostat mechanistic form, from an organic design. The redesigning of the harvester to remove the similarities with the transformers. If you like eye popping artwork than this is the book, the reproductions are big and more than generous no squinting required. Although Terminator Salvation has incredible special effects an array of visual stimuli that is unbeatable, set pieces and cast that do an exceptional job it somehow did poorly, comparing terminator salvation with the likes of 1984 terminator that was and is in a scale not yet beaten and 1991 judgement day where a whole new concept of terminator was introduced the T2 a shape shifting cyborg taking the terminators to a whole new level back down to the T3 great digital effects again stunning technology just didn't have the story and the visuals of the previous. TI and T2 were hard acts to follow proven by the massively reduced ratings that the T3 and T4 received. T1 and T2 were stunning extravagant special effects. Actors of this termenator didn't have the charm and charisma that the previous actors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Robert Patrick.

2-0 out of 5 stars Weell...
Not really what I thought it was.. lot of low res images scaled to fit the page, low on details. I started buying concept books to inspire myself and to see how other artist deal with design tasks but this book das not serves me much, although there is great amount of pics

4-0 out of 5 stars Ok
Good collection of artwork.Nice to see how the machines evolved from blobs of ink on paper to highly detailed VFX.

4-0 out of 5 stars An insight into how they come up with the look for movies
I love fantasy movies. Like a lot of people, I'd like to work in films and create amazing images like the ones in the Terminator films. But how do you go about it?
This book is especially useful as it shows not just the final designs used in the film, but also the early ideas and dead ends that are part of the creative process.
Terminator is an especially interesting subject, as James Cameron created the entire look for the world in the first low budget film and every subsequent movie has had to elaborate on that original style.
As such, we see the killer robot equivalent of the Cadillac tailfin design style -different enough to suggest something new, but not so radical that it steps outside the established formula.
This fourth film in the series is particularly interesting as being a prequel to the original movie, it has to suggest designs that are more primitive than the ones created 20 years ago!
In this respect Terminator Salvation is not entirely sucessful, as audiences expect to see more rather than less and the temptation is always to go bigger and better, to top what has been seen before.
The original Terminator was a small film, but it packed a big visual design punch for it's day.
The advent of today's digital effects and mega million dollar budgets don't nescessarily equate to a better final product.

This book is nicely presented and it makes a cool techno-fascist addition to any coffee table!
It's interesting to see how the standard and style of pre production art has changed over the years.
Cameron used white conte pencil on black paper to define the gleaming chrome of the Terminator robot, now today's artists produce much more finished pieces, using Photoshop and photo collages, 3D rendered models and electronic tablet pens instead of squeaker markers and airbrushes...

If nothing else, this book gives a good idea of the standards that are now expected in a big budget Hollywood movie...
Having done a very small amount of design work on films like "Red Planet" and "Star Wars Ep2." I can really appreciate the degree of skill that goes into these artworks, as opposed to the napkin scribbles I produced!
Now with the decline in local film production, I have moved on to teaching, rather than actually working in the industry and I find books like "The Art of Terminator Salvation" excellent teaching aids for my students.

In many ways I've enjoyed this book more than the film that created it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterful Artbook
This blew me away.I enjoyed this film, for what it was, but getting to see inside the late, GREAT Stan Winston's mind, and his remaining workshop is always a blessing to me.Much like the AVP artbooks, this gets you a deeper look at what was used to create these things, up close shots, and much of the mechanical elements. The concept art is wonderful as well, and anyone looking for inspiration for robots or the like would do well to have this in their catelogue. This honestly was one of the best purchases I've ever made. ... When Pop art paintings depicted Campbell soup cans or comic-book scenes of teen romance, did they stoop to the level of their mundane sources, or did they instead transmogrify the detritus of consumer culture into high art?In this study, Cécile Whiting declares the issues fundamentally irresolvable and instead takes the question itself, along with the varied answers it has generated, as the object of her analysis.Whiting presents case studies that focus on works by four artists--Tom Wesselmann, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Marisol Escobar--who are closely associated with the Pop Art movement. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A really great primer on Japanese pop culture covering fifty-years from the end of World War II... but which is becoming dated
I read this book back when I was a university student.I made a point of reading at least one article a day (but usually many more), until I had finished it.It really was, and is, a great overview of Japanese pop culture.I certainly still recommend it, however 12-years after it was published, it is certainly looking dated.I live in Japan now and can say with honesty that a large cross section of the current book would be new information to the children and teens of today.I would certainly love to see a second edition published with more content from the last decade!

5-0 out of 5 stars Obviously a labor of love...
This is such a great read - I live in Japan and thought it would get me in touch with the people around me. Since most of the entries feature pop culture from the late 1950s through the early 1990s, though, what I've ended up with is a lot of fun stories which the Japanese 30-somethings around me have never even heard!

The result? Everyone thinks I'm that weird foreigner who knows about and likes Pink Lady, who knows how many members there were in SMAP when they first started, and all the different generations of Ultraman.

The author lives in Japan, and does know what he's talking about. He pokes fun at some of the goofy stars and trends which have come along, without ever getting mean about them.

This makes for a highly readable book of short essays - highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Japan is always not anime culture.
Everybody of the world may know Hayao Miyazaki's animation movies because his movie won an Academy Award. On the other hands, forigners may have the thought that Japan is a developing country on animation genre. But true Japan charm never finish by only that off course.

The Japanese uniqueness expand to many genres, anime, TV culture, movie, manga, music...

Comics are called Manga in Japan. The manga culture started after World War 2 mainly, the flame work as manga was made by Osamu Teduka(he is no alive now). His famouse manga is Tetsuwan Atomu. The main story is very simple that the main character Atom(robot) beat the evil character. But the age that the manga was published was 1950'. At those days, people worked very hard in debris because the time after WW2 had finished was very short. Atomu was a hero for such hard workers in poverty.
Even now Teduka is a hero for all Japanese manga or anime creaters, for all Japanese even. That reason is always not just the pioneer on the genre, he included hisself messages to his mangas always, for instance anti war philosophy, the opinion for environmental destruction and so on.. By doing such things, manga became to be not just fun genre.

Or as Japanese unique comic genre, there are Syoujo comic(comics for girls). The genre is very unique Japan only. The most famouse manga may be Berusaiyu No Bara. The main theme was Europian knights story in the Middle Ages of France. By using beautiful atmosphere like old France style or pure love story of knights, the creaters tempted girls very well. Japanese girls want such pure love story manga in some cases. Though I do not know the detail emotion because of a man, they may do the imaginary romance in such manga. The tendency have not change until now.

Japanese movies are unique genre in Japan too. Some foreigners may know the name Takeshi Kitano who won Europian movie awards. Japanese movie genre is variouse so that I can not explain by one word. When I dare to explain, the most famouse theme is Yakuza story(Japanese gangu). Off course some Japanese feel fears to Yakuza. But on the other hands, some Japanese watch Yakuza movies. On Yakuza world, the relationship between up and down posiion is very important. For instance, in the some movie, low position yakuza say"I can die for senior yakuzas", that is, absolute loyalty exict in Yakuza world.
Such unique stance will tempt some Japanese watcher, in the age that such stance is being lost, whether the stance is bad or not.

Thank you for reading poor English.

5-0 out of 5 stars pop culture encyclopedia = contradiction in terms
it's not possible. It just is -not- possible to do a pop culture encyclopedia no matter how hard one tries to.If you're going to do one, though, the key ingredients are to pick the lasting phenomenas and to assure your reader there's a depth in it worth covering.

Schilling doesn't cover most of what I remember from Japan. He doesn't cover rock music. He doesn't cover kogaru. He doesn't cover ramune or pocky.Honestly, on an encounter level with other similar books I've found myself insulted by the lack of knowledge presented in their so-called "encyclopedia".But with what he covers, he covers it well and authoratatively and with an expressed but not hideously overt sense of irony about the entire situation.

I've found myself keeping it for a reference piece because what he does cover tends to get incorporated into a lot of what he doesn't.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good attempt
Before you purchase this book, as yourself, "when have I ever seen a review of popular culture that covered everything?" The answer, probably, is never, and if so, this book won't change that. The author states as much in the introduction. Having said that, the book is very good at what it attempts to do, namely give novice readers a basic understanding of the key elements of Japanese popular culture in the post-War era. A book which covered every fad, popular music group, TV program and movie during that time period would be larger than several phone books and would have a hard time selling. What this book does well is describe, in a fair amount of detail, the important cultural icons, from Misora Hibari and Sazae-san, through Pink Lady and Doraemon, ending with SMAP and Sailor Moon. If you're looking for a primer on Japanese pop culture over the last 50 years, this is the book. If you already have deep personal knowledge or are interested in only one thing (like anime), you may be disappointed. One other small problem with the book is that because it is in print form, the information is fixed in time, but Japanese culture goes on. In other words, some of the stuff in this book is dated. The concept of the book might better be served by a web site, but I doubt that Mr. Schilling could make a profit with such a site. If anybody decides to try though, please let me know.I'd visit! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical Purchase
This book, "The Practical Art of Motion Picture Sound, 3rd Ed" is one I needed for college. It arrived quickly, and much cheaper than the bookstore had it. Amazon rocks.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Many Stories
While this book has some nice sound information, you have to wade through endless amounts of personal stories to get to any of it. It is really a pain to read. I had to read for a class and I had to struggle with each and every chapter. There are times when he finally gets to some sound information, you just gloss over it because you are so tired of reading his stories. And all his stories are basically the same: he is right and everyone else is either stupid, incompetent or has no idea what they are doing. This book is 500 plus pages and it seems like 400 or so are stories. Hopefully if there is a 4th edition, they cut out all the stories and just give you information.

Oh, it comes with a dvd, which doesn't work for the most part. Half the people in my class can't get parts to the dvd to play, including me. Awesome.

2-0 out of 5 stars Tough to get to the point
I am a college level instructor and was looking for a book to use as a text for my Sound Design Class. I was excited to see that David Yewdall had written a book on the subject. He is well known and respected in our Hollywood Sound Community.
My first impression was that the book was full of great real life information but was a bit cluttered with anecdotes. As the class has progressed I have found that the students have not responded well to the text. I can understand why. The points and specifics are introduced and surrounded by drawn out reminiscing. It takes effort to get students to read anyway and this book does not help.It reads like a biography lined with details.

There is a significant amount of text dedicated to film specific procedures. Although there may be instances where a student may encounter mag film, it seems to be too much.

The included DVD seems a bit amateurish. It gives some added value by giving a few audible examples, but the narration is monotone. It caused some laughter in the class and it loses their attention.

The details are great and hit the nail on the head for anyone wanting to enter the industry, or better understand how to work with a sound professional. But it is heavy sledding to mush through. It could be edited down to a more readable text and be better to use for a class.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ego gets in the way
NOTE:This is more of a review of the 2nd edition, but because the 3rd edition is out now, I feel this information is important and I'm sure it is still relevant.

I have to begin by saying I have the upmost respect for Mr. Yewdall and his credits are impressive to say the least.I then have to immediately follow that statement by saying his book editor should be fired.

There is a ton of information in this book, unfortunately you have to wade through personal stories, name dropping, and ego stroking tales that really weigh the book down.I would love to read a biography about Yewdall, just not while I'm looking for real, informative substance about the facts of Motion Picture audio.

This would probably be THE definitive book because of the substance is attempts to cover, but ends up very inefficient and distracting. You don't have to look any farther than the dedication page (the third page in) to see an example of the distractions that follow it.

Now, as far as the 3rd edition goes, it was printed 15 years later, so read a few passages in a bookstore before buying it.If you don't see any personal stories or name dropping, he probably found a good book editor.

Cheers

5-0 out of 5 stars So this is how movies get made
Mr Yewdall takes his thirty plus years in the movie business and places it all here. This book is about motion-picture sound, but it is also about the "How" of how movies get made (in a major studio setting)from an insiders experience.

I have read many books on filmaking but this is the most comperhensive, almost step-by-step, book I have read to date.

If you are, or want to be, an independent filmaker read this book first, then re-read it again. Yewdall will show you how to get that "Big Movie" sound into your low-budget or no-budget film. Of course sound design is an art and a craft, so it must be practiced and worked at. But this book will give you the advise and direction you need to get you going in the right direction.

The big bonus feature of this book is the DVD that comes with it. It's on the DVD that you get to HEAR what the author is teaching.

I feel this review doesn't do the book justice, but if your interested in the technical skills of making films, and sound for films, read this book. ... Read more

Product Description
Discover the theory and techniques of perspective, from the Renaissance to Pop Art.

Since the principles of perspective were first shown in Renaissance Italy, the depiction of depth and space has held a central place in Western art. Artists have endeavored to represent three-dimensional images that are as close as possible to what we actually see. Not until the 20th century were these principles rejected in favor of a distorted viewpoint. See the impossible triangle and other perspective puzzles, and famous masterpieces accompanied by explanatory diagrams. Learn how abstract art conveys depth, how the invention of oil paints made it possible to capture atmospheric effects. Discover what archery has to do with art theory, and what a camera obscura is. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Visual delight - but not a workbook
Like all of DK's Eyewitness Series books, this guide to understanding perspective is richly illustrated, and its subject matter is presented clearly, with fascinating coverage from an historical perspective (no pun intended). It covers aspects of perspective few other books on the subject delve into, such as curvilinear and aerial perspective and anamorphosis.

The book does not, however, include methods of implementing perspective in one's own drawings. For that, you need Norling's _Perspective Made Easy_ or Metzger's _Persective Without Pain_.

5-0 out of 5 stars A visual treat
Eyewitness Art: Perspective is a history of the development of perspective in art. It's profusely illustrated with drawings, with photographs of instruments that artists used to cope with perspective and also with photographs of famous paintings from the Italian Renaissance, the Northern European Renaissance and later.

It's intended for children from 9 to 12, but any adult interested art will enjoy spending time with this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ART book
Too many movie 'art of' book either show silly color studies, or too many scenes from the actual movie itself (I'm talkin' to you pixar). This book shows the amazing artistry that went into making the film with a thorough display of pencil sketches and digital 'paintings'. The movie was so-so, but I loved that design that went into the world itself, and that quality is exemplified by this book. Highly recommended for any CG animation or 50's era monster art fans. Lots of good stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of character designs and beautiful background paintings
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1I9BVNS0UU0Y The cover art is slightly different from the original product image. The fat alien is replaced with Lem, the main character of the movie.

This book is published by Insight Editions but doesn't come with any of special enhancement (e.g. pullouts, cards) you sometimes see with their other books.

Planet 51 is the other animated movie this year featuring aliens, the other being Monsters vs Aliens. The cast is of course different, and the set is not on Earth but on Planet 51. Planet 51 is the debut film of Madrid-based Ilion Animation. The concept artists, based off the names in the captions, seem to be all from Spain. The whole film was produced entirely in Spain.

There are more than 400 pieces of concept art in this book. Each character comes with lots of sketches. The background paintings are very beautiful and scenic. There are also many alien set and prop designs. It's like looking at a parallel universe where everything looks familiar but different. The aliens have their own version of the famous Flatiron building in Manhattan, suburbia, Area 51, vehicles, utensils, etc.

My favourites are the background and set paintings, some of which are very detailed. This book has top notch art work and variety. There are short commentary on the art and concept.

It's a visually delightful book, highly recommended to character designers and animation lovers.
