Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Hydro-Québec," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Hydro-Québec in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Hydro-Québec when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Hydro-Québec, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Description:
Public opinion polls from before and after 2001 in Quebec (Canada) reveal a marked shift during that year in attitudes about the US. Quebecois opinions of the US fell to the least favorable rating they had had in 15 years. A ''fair weather friend'' phenomenon based on fear of association with a target state does not fully explain Quebec's reaction. Consideration of Quebec's historical geographical situation as a small nation without a sovereign state suggests deeper reasons for the shift in perspective, which are confirmed by quantitative and qualitative analysis of letters to the editor of daily newspapers. Quebecois letters about the attacks of September 11 were inclined to frame these attacks in terms of a battle between a large and powerful state and various small and weak nations, and subsequently to find common cause with the small nations. This particular framing of the 9-11 events according to a ''small-nation'' code reflected fundamental elements of the historical-geographical situation of Quebec as constructed in Quebecois discourses. The activation of a set of key associations from the national past to understand international relations in the present is an example of what Gertjan Dijkink calls the ''national reflex''. The activation of the reflex by an attack on the US points out how a hegemonic state can be vulnerable, paradoxically, as a result of its own supremacy. ... Read more

Product Description

Focusing on the transition from the production of squared timber to that of milled lumber and, finally, wood pulp, Gaudreau traces the constant depletion of the resource and the companies' resulting, inexorable push westward from Quebec into Ontario - an economic migration that led to the establishment of significant francophone communities across northern Ontario. He shows how recent generations of Quebec historians have failed to provide adequate historical explanations because of an overly exclusive focus on Quebec. Gaudreau's work provides an important historiographic corrective, showing that the history of Quebec is part of a complex fabric that, like the forests themselves, does not recognize provincial boundaries.Detailed annual data on the volume of principal forest products produced from Crown lands in Quebec and Ontario during the second half of the nineteenth century compiled systematically for the first time form the backbone of this study. Based on these data Gaudreau describes and clarifies the timing, scale, and significance of transitions in forest outputs as spruce joined pine as the principal type of wood logged and as milled lumber and subsequently pulp wood joined, and eventually replaced, square timber as the key product. The book addresses the implications of resource depletion and the economic and historical changes in the forestry industry, including the transition from a commercial and artisanal process to an industrial process and the implications this had for colonization and migration.

Seen through the lens of photographer Yves Marcoux, Montréal is a city a thousand radiant vistas. It’s where the charm of exterior staircases and vibrant-coloured cornices in paired with the lyricism of skyscrapers; where stone lacework and élaborate pediments complement the stark élegance of modern façades. It’s Montréal, city of history, wearing its past proudly in its streets and squares and at every crossroad. It’s a city worthy of Montrealers — vibrant, eclectic, cosmopolitan, boasting tranquil neighbourhoods and bustling markets, cafés and terraces, tree-lined streets. ... Read more

Kirkland is a town on the Island of Montreal in southwestern Quebec, Canada. As of 2006, the population was 20491. It is named after Dr. Charles-Aimé Kirkland, a Quebec provincial politician. Originally incorporated as a municipality in 1961, it merged with the City of Montreal on January 1, 2002, at the insistence of the Parti Québécois provincial government. Following the election of the Quebec Liberal Party, it was given the opportunity to hold a demerger referendum on June 20, 2004, and voted to be re-established as a separate city, which became effective on January 1, 2006 ...
