Dechêne's work, when first published, constituted a major milestone in the development of methodology and use of sources. Her systematic examination of difficult and massive documentary collections blazed a number of new trails for other researchers. Her judicious blending of numerical data and "qualitative"findings makes this book one of the rare examples of "new history" that avoids the extremes of statistical abstraction and anecdotal antiquarianism.Habitants and Merchants in Seventeenth-Century Montreal won the Governor-General's Award and the Garneau Medal from the Canadian Historical Association when it first appeared in French.

Product Description
The Life and Thought of David Craig tells the story of one Canadian Presbyterian missionary whose life spanned more than six decades and three continents. From humble Ontario origins, David studied and served in several diverse languages and cultures. After a near death experience as a missionary in Nigeria, David became increasingly involved in French evangelism and Reformed theological education. Most significantly, from 1976 until his death in 2001, David served as a pastor in three successive French-speaking congregations in the province of Quebec.David's career evidences not only the emotions and adventure of one man, but the joys and challenges more generally experienced by Christian missionaries in the second half of the 20th century.

JASON ZUIDEMA (Ph.D., McGill) is lecturer in Church History at Farel Reformed Theological Seminary and McGill University. He has written a number of articles and several books including the recently-released Peter Martyr Vermigli (1499-1562) and the Outward Instruments of Divine Grace (Vandenhoeck & Ruprect). He is an ordained minister in the Église réformée du Québec and resides with his wife and two children in Repentigny, Quebec.

Product Description

With a career spanning more than five decades, director and cinematographer Michel Brault is one of the most influential figures in Québécois cinema. Brault's early works, including Les Raquetteurs and Pour la suite du monde, reflect a previously unacknowledged and unfulfilled need on the part of Québécois society to see its own culture depicted onscreen, and helped spark a cultural renaissance in Quebec. His 1974 fiction feature Les Ordres, which deals with the Quebec Liberation Front crisis and the invocation of the War Measures Act, has consistently been listed as one of the best Québécois and Canadian films to date. Brault's work as cinematographer -- on groundbreaking films such as Claude Jutra's Mon oncle Antoine (1971) and Francis Mankiewicz's Les Bons Débarras (1980) -- and his contributions to the development of the cinema-verité movement, have been equally significant.

Product Description
In the late Victorian era, smoking was a male habit and tobacco was consumed mostly in pipes and cigars. By the mid-twentieth century, advertising and movies had not only made it acceptable for women to smoke but smoking had become a potent symbol of their emancipation. From mass cigarette production in 1888 to the first studies linking cigarettes to lung cancer in 1950, "The Freedom to Smoke" explores gender and other key issues related to smoking in Montreal, including the arrival of 'big tobacco', first attempts to ban the cigarette, wartime tobacco funds, French Canadian smoking habits, rituals of manliness, and the growing respectability of women smokers - none of which have been examined by historians.Jarrett Rudy argues that while people smoked for highly personal reasons, their smoking rituals were embedded in social relations and shaped by dominant norms of taste and etiquette. "The Freedom to Smoke" examines the role of the tobacco industry, health experts, churches, farmers, newspapers, the military, the state, and smokers themselves.A pioneering city-based study, it weaves western understandings of respectable smoking through Montreal's diverse social and cultural fabric. Rudy argues that etiquette gave smoking a political role, reflecting and serving to legitimize beliefs about inclusion, exclusion, and hierarchy that were at the core of a transforming liberal order. ... Product Description

The town of Arvida provides a field on which we can observe in microcosm the birth of an industrial town and the development of the population's identity as a community. Using a wealth of quantitative and qualitative data, José Igartua examines what type of people chose to come, who decided to stay, how they lived, and how the demographic traits of the region shifted. He argues that even though a significant proportion of the population came from outside the region Arvida gradually acquired the character of a Saguenay town, where family, the Catholic Church, and French-Canadian culture were dominant.Igartua pays particular attention to the local labour movement, which culminated in the famous wildcat strike of 1941, revealing that the fight for collective action was the turning point in the development of a community consciousness.

Product Description
In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, French settlers radically transformed the landscape of the St Lawrence river, creating strong local communities that became the crucibles of a New World nationalism. Drawing on the insights and methods of cultural history, Colin Coates examines the seigneuries of Batiscan and Sainte-Anne de la Perade, recreating the social relations between individuals and ethnic groups that inhabited the area. He shows that successive waves of immigrants sought to appropriate the landscape of the New World and replace it with a physical and cultural reality much closer to their European roots and traditions. French settlers distanced the indigenous people and flora and fauna to create a landscape that by the mid-eighteenth century had become recognisably European. British industrialists and landowners attempted similar appropriations with far less durable results and the area remained a heartland of French-Canadian life, with a sense of cohesive community. This community spirit, rooted in agrarian landscape, was channelled into the developing sense of colonial nationalism of the 1820s and 1830s.Drawing on maps by explorers and surveyors, correspondence documenting the conflict between a backwoods priest and his parishioners, a gentlewoman's sketchbook, and the documents of a bitter court case between a seigneur's wife and a local priest, Coates illuminates the development of the region and the social, cultural, and economic ties and tensions within it, providing insights into the often hidden values of a rural community. Colin M. Coates is director of the Centre of Canadian Studies at the University of Edinburgh. ... Read more

Parish registers, notarial acts, administrative and judicial archives were used extensively to provide a comprehensive view of the formation and evolution of this society in its seigneurial context. In La Prairie en Nouvelle-France the seigneury comes into its own as a vantage point from which to view Canadian society under the French régime. The comparative approach that informs the entire work permits parallels and contrasts between colonial and metropolitan societies.

Product Description
~

The role and function of criminal justice in a conquered colony is always problematic, and the case of Quebec is no exception. Many historians have suggested that, between the Conquest and the Rebellions (1760s–1830s), Quebec’s ‘Canadien’ inhabitants both boycotted and were excluded from the British criminal justice system.Magistrates, Police, and People challenges this simplistic view of the relationship between criminal law and Quebec society, offering instead a fresh view of a complex accord.

Based on extensive research in judicial and official sources, Donald Fyson offers the first comprehensive study of the everyday workings of criminal justice in Quebec and Lower Canada.Focussing on the justices of the peace and their police, Fyson examines both the criminal justice system itself, and the system in operation as experienced by those who participated in it.Fyson contends that, although the system was fundamentally biased, its flexibility provided a source of power for ordinary citizens. At the same time, everyday criminal justice offered the colonial state and colonial elites a powerful, though often faulty, means of imposing their will on Quebec society. This fascinating and controversial study will challenge many received historical interpretations, providing new insight into the criminal justice system of early Quebec.

Product Description
Two Hundred years ago in Quebec was born Canada's best-selling author. He was rated as a superior orator to Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier and Joseph Papineau. Most Quebec households had a portrait of him as he managed to convince half of Quebecers to sign a temperance pledge. He toured the English-speaking world right up to age 88 and drew great crowds. At his death just over a hundred years ago the New York Times and the Times of London gave him headlines. His books are all still in print in many languages and his name appears on thousands of Internet sites. Yet few Canadians in our generation have ever heard of him.

The fact that Charles Chiniquy left the Catholic priesthood and became a Presbyterian pastor in the 19th Century led inevitably to polemics and opposing interpretations of his life. For the first time his life story will be set out without being based on propaganda. Instead an examination of the best documents on all sides and the recently uncovered Chiniquy family archives have allowed a fresh approach.

Because of the complexity and number of documents, this book will provide an introduction to his life and contains a listing of his books, his correspondence and a chronology that will allow others to continue the research. The originality of this contribution comes in the concentration on the events and interpretations around his "conversion".Diverse methodologies touching theology, sociology, psychology, literature and more are applied here to the question of conversion and apostasy.

Clergy conversions have their own special status. In this case Quebec's hero figure and best-known priest was excommunicated and became a very out-spoken Protestant. As a result great resources were thrown at the situation by both sides to spin the message. This was so successful that contrary influential myths were created about Chiniquy that lasted in Quebec society over one hundred years after his death and continue unabated on the Web.

Chiniquy fans will find rich new details and photos.Chiniquy detesters will find mitigating circumstances.Researchers will find invaluable data for further research. Everyone will find an exciting and stimulating story of an amazing man.

RICHARD LOUGHEED (Ph.D., Université de Montréal) is a specialist in French Protestant history and lectures in Church History at the Institut de Formation Théologique de Montréal.He is also chair of Mennonites in Quebec.

Although there have been some Irish living in Montreal since the early 1600s, augmented by Irish soldiers arriving with the conquering British army, it was only in the early 1800s that an Irish presence was truly noticed. By 1824 there were sufficient Irish in Montreal to organize the first St. Patrick's Day Parade, and ten years later the St. Patrick's Society was founded. In 1847 St. Patrick's Basilica, Montreal's first church built for the Irish Catholics opened--a year before thousands of sick Irish escaping the famine in Ireland arrived. ... Read more

Product Description

Studies of young activists have tended to focus on the period of the 1960s.Neatby shows us that the youth of the sixties were not the only ones to distinguish themselves by their social activism and idealism - students of the Duplessis era were equally conscientious and idealistic about wanting reform and felt a strong sense of social responsibility towards the world at large. On the Quebec scene they openly criticizedreligious authorities and increasingly saw themselves as agents of reform in educational matters.Their activism led them to take strike action and to organize a sit-in.Neatby shows that students, like so many other social groups in the Quebec of the 1950s, were far from quiescent during the so-called "Grande noirceur."The attitudes of these activists provide a background for understanding student demands today, such as educational reform, free access to universities, and the abolition of student fees.
