Northern Pacific Railway Museum In 1993 an agreement was reached with the Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma for the lease of the 1902 Northern Pacific engine #1364 . Volunteers converted the old Toppenish freight house to an engine house. The wooden floors were removed from the old freight area. Concrete and rail were laid so that the locomotive could be moved inside. Many more hours of work are coming to fruition as the once derelict locomotive begins to take shape again in preparation for planned return to service in 2003. A 1930's vintage freight train is being restored to display the importance of railroad transportation to early western development. Construction on the line from Toppenish (Wesley Junction) to White Swan was originally begun by the Toppenish, Simcoe and Western Railroad in 1909. It was purchased by the Northern Pacific Railway in 1915. In 1992 the Washington Central Railroad placed the ex-Northern Pacific White Swan Branch line up for abandonment. With the help of the Washington State Department of Transportation and Yakima County, the 20.3 miles of track were placed into the state's "rail banking" program to prevent removal. The museum association formed its operating division as the (TSWR) and contracted to provide rail service over this line. The inaugural passenger run was in July 1993 and in October 1993 the first freight cars were moved. Recent increases in the number of shippers and volumes of shipments has greatly expanded the use of the line. Current traffic has mandated the hiring of a full time manager and the purchase of another locomotive. As the freight business has grown, it became necessary to spin off the TSWR as a wholly owned for profit company. This was accomplished in March of 2002.

He turned to John J. Coit who operated a successful eighteen inch gauge (1/3rd scale) miniature steam railroad at Eastlake Park (now Lincoln Park) in Los Angeles. He persuaded him to oversee the construction and management of a mile and three quarter long railroad that would take passengers from the Windward Avenue business district on a loop across canal bridges and through the canaled residential district, then return via a loop up Washington Boulevard, past its Lake Avenue maintenance yard and back to the Windward station along Mildred Avenue. Coit, who had designed his own locomotive, ordered a heavier Prairie 2-6-2 oil burning engine at a cost of $4510 from the Johnson Machine Works in Los Angeles. The locomotive was finished in black with brass rails and silver lettering. The first set of five, 12 passenger cars was painted royal blue, while the second set ordered later was painted cherry red. Work on laying the tracks on the city streets, however, was delayed while Kinney awaited the Ocean Park's Board of Trustees to grant him permission. Coit, in the meantime, constructed a storage and maintenance year along Lake Avenue (now Venice Boulevard where it intersects Abbot Kinney Blvd). He built a three stall engine house, 20 foot diameter turntable, oil and water tanks, a two-track storage shed for the passenger cars, and a machine shop capable of servicing and repairing the locomotives and cars.
