Extractions: The New Jersey Bird Records Committee exists to collect data pertaining to records of rare birds reported in the state of New Jersey, and maintain a State List for ornithological purposes. When used in this context, "rare" describes a species which has never appeared in the state before, or has appeared only a few times; typically, such a bird is not in its normal range or habitat and is not present for a long period. In this usage "rare" doesn't mean endangered or threatened in the legal sense. Such species are not monitored by this committee, and should be reported to appropriate governmental or conservation organizations. The goals of the Committee are summarized in an article written by Richard Crossley. Please report only species on the New Jersey Review List or species new to the state; see the New Jersey State List for species which have occurred in the state. Extractions: and Russian Far East. When Russians say "Siberia", they usually mean only inland areas of Asian Russia. All Pacific Coast, from Chukchi Sea to Ussuriland, is referred to as "Far East". This part is much more interesting for a naturalist or a tourist than Siberia itself. Due to milder climate and less violent glacial history, the Far East shelters the most diverse flora and fauna in the country. Still, forces of Nature are no less savage here than in Siberia. Typhoons, tsunamis, volcanoes and snowstorms have created some of the World's most beautiful landscapes. Here you will find mixtures of Siberia, Japan, California and Alaska in all possible variations. There are only few big cities in the Far East, in most areas the environment is in better condition than elsewhere in Asia. In some parts, native tribes are still the only source of environmental impact, and their numbers are steadily declining, mostly due to assimilation and emigration from tribal lands. Russian Far East is one of my favorite parts of our planet. I have conducted seven expeditions to this area, and visited almost all interesting places. There are some very good zoologists and botanists here, and hundreds of expeditions have been working here during the last 150 years. Still, the Nature of the Far East is so diverse, that you can start making small discoveries the moment you step out of an airplane.

Extractions: The Guardian Since Ellen Wilkinson became the first female minister for educa-tion in 1945, there has been a widely held perception that education is an acceptable place for women. The argument usually goes something like this. The working hours are shorter, and the holidays longer, and therefore teaching is conducive to having children and raising a family. Traditionally, girls who didn't go into nursing chose to go into teaching. It's a "people" business; a touchy-feely, caring-for-others sort of career; a place where salaries are low and kudos even lower. In short, a natural home for women. Most of your children's teachers at primary school will be women; many of those at secondary will be female, too. There are female heads of department in schools and colleges; in universities there are women researchers and lecturers. We have high-profile women professors, such as Susan Greenfield and Lisa Jardine; in Ellen's glorious wake, we have had Shirley Williams, Margaret Thatcher and Estelle Morris at the education department.

Related Stories Next Story Source: Wildlife Conservation Society Date: NEW YORK (March 26) To help save two rare bird species living deep in the jungles of Sarawak, Malaysia, the Bronx Zoo-based Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) spent two years collecting donations of a different kind from zoos throughout North America. It wasnt money, but tail feathers shed from captive hornbills. The feathers will be shipped to Sarawak tomorrow, where officials will distribute them to indigenous people for use in traditional headdresses and ceremonies. This will offset the need to hunt rhinoceros and helmeted hornbills, whose populations in the wild have plummeted in recent years. WCS scientists Drs. Elizabeth Bennett and Christine Sheppard developed this innovative program. Dr. Bennett, who has worked with indigenous people in Sarawak for the past 15 years, collaborated with Sarawaks Council of Customs and Traditions to ensure that using feathers from zoo animals is culturally acceptable.

Extractions: Issued By: Department Of Agriculture, Conservation, Environment And Land Affairs, Gauteng Provincial Government 23 January 2003 Gauteng Agriculture, Conservation, Environment and Land Affairs, MEC Mary Metcalfe finally handed over seven rare African Parrots to the Johannesburg Zoo on Friday, confiscated in November 2002 from a foiled illegal smuggling at the Johannesburg International Airport. The illegal consignment consisted of five African grey and two Jardine parrots, both of which are listed as rare species in the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) Appendix 2. The birds originate from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The provincial Nature Conservation Special Investigation Unit based at the airport, seized the consignment and a Boeing 707 aircraft that was used to smuggle the birds. A flight engineer has since been convicted in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court under Prohibited Acts with Endangered Species in terms of the Nature Conservation Ordinance and the birds were then forfeited to Gauteng Provincial Government. Last year only, the unit investigated 10 incidents of illegal trade in rare or endangered bird species at Johannesburg International Airport and seized over 150 birds.
