    Extractions: This core unit deals with central issues in metaphysics and the theory of knowledge through a study of selected major works in the early modern (17th and 18th century) history of philosophy. The chosen texts are Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy and Locke's Essay concerning Human Understanding . Many of the problems first systematically explored in these works remain at the heart of philosophy, and the solutions to those problems proposed by Descartes and Locke still set the scene for contemporary discussion of them. For this reason the unit provides essential background to advanced work in philosophy. * To develop understanding of such central topics as: the certainty and basis of knowledge; the possibility of establishing substantial truths about the world without recourse to observation; the objectivity of both everyday and scientific descriptions of the world; the nature of mind and the self. * To develop the abilities involved in the close study and criticism of historical texts. * By means of this specific programme, the unit further aims to improve critical reading, critical thinking, and oral communication skills through the seminar discussion and essay writing processes. The German school of theological Rationalism formed a part of the more general movement of the eighteenth-century "Enlightenment". It may be said to owe its immediate origin to the philosophical system of Christian Wolff (1679-1754), which was a modification, with Aristotelean Lutherans miracles recorded in, and the authenticity of the Holy Scriptures. Nevertheless, the distinction between Rationalism and Naturalism still obtained. The great Biblical critic Semler (1725-91), who is one of the principal representatives of the school, was a strong opponent of the latter; in company with Teller (1734-1804) and others he endeavoured to show that the records of the Bible have no more than a local and temporary character, thus attempting to safeguard the deeper revelation, while sacrificing to the critics its superficial vehicle. He makes the distinction between theology and religion (by which he signifies ethics).

The human mind as we know it hasn't always been present, though. It took a whole host of consciousness-pioneers to manufacture it and polish it up. In the Western world, the first recorded examples of rational thinking are the fragmentary writings of Greece's Milesian School, from Thales to Heraclitus . The Milesians and other ancient Greek thinkers, Aristotle foremost among them, devised most of the "moves" we use today to analyse what's really happening and how things came to happen that way. The Classical tradition, however, came to an abrupt halt when Christian and then Muslim fundamentalists conquered the Greco-Roman world. Bishops ordered the smashing of artworks, caliphs ordered the torching of great libraries. Many of the oldest Greek writings only exist as tiny shredded fragments recycled for use in wrapping corpses. It wasn't until the 14th Century or so that these fragments started to be rediscovered in Western Europe, a movement that came to be known as the Renaissance. From its origins as a purely antiquarian literary movement, the Renaissance spread to the arts. Suddenly, public buildings were no longer dark and grim, echoing Medieval religious fanaticism. The new buildings were light-filled and airy, laid out according to mathematical considerations. Suddenly, paintings were no longer the stylized, poorly-drawn cartoons of Medieval days.
