Extractions: Dept. of Philosophy This seminar will survey recent work on a priori knowledge, focusing on what it is and whether we have any. We'll look at (i) the positivists' attempts to account for a priori knowledge in terms of analyticity; (ii) Quine's attacks on the notion of analyticity; and (iii) new forms of rationalism that appeared in the 1980s. We'll also look at (iv) objections to rationalism stemming from naturalist views in epistemology and the philosophy of mind. If time permits (which it probably won't) we will explore (v) the connections between Kripke's and Putnam's work on reference and the epistemic status of claims like "The standard meter is 1 meter long," and "I am not a brain in a vat." This seminar is aimed at graduate students in philosophy. Others with an appropriate background may also be permitted to attend; please speak to me individually. There will be only a few readings, but we will be scrutinizing them closely and at length. I want the seminar to be driven primarily by group discussion, so it is very important for you to have read and thought about these readings before our meetings. In Indian mythology and purans, Brihospoti is considered as the preceptor of all gods (Devguru) . He was one of the prominent authors of Rikvedas and the first Rational Atheist among the Aryans. Some scholars think that he was, most probably, the first Atheist in the world . Brihoshopti is considered as the spiritual master (guru) of the charvaka philosophy. In the first part of this course, we will be studying Descartes most famous text, the Meditations . In lectures and seminars we will examine and critically analyse, through a close textual reading, the arguments presented in this great work. We will be paying particular attention to those issues and themes having had the greatest influence upon post-Cartesian philosophical thinking, namely: In the second part of the course we will turn our attention to recent debates reflecting upon some of these themes in Descartes work. In particular, we will look at the nature and limits of reason in the Cartesian tradition, which has, arguably, dominated philosophy since the writing of the Meditations. What do Hohol', Kulish, Kostomarov and Shevchenko have in common to warrant their inclusion in a history of philosophy? His major works include Discourse on Method Meditations on First Philosophy (1641), and Principles of Philosophy (1644). His philosophy, also known as Cartesianism, describes a dualistic universe that is a world consisting of two basic substances, matter and spirit. Matter includes everything in the physical universe and spirit consists of the human mind. His belief is that both of these substances can exist independently of each other. In proving his theory, he introduced the Latin phrase cogito ergo sum , meaning I think, therefore I am. Descartes' philosophy was not widely accepted at first. "In France and the Low Countries, Catholic and Protestant clerics combated the new teaching" (Tsanoff). The problem was that Descartes proposed the rejection of authority and tradition, and many people viewed this as the rejection of ethics and religion. "It was said that his views led to atheism" (Russell). Descartes was aware of this possible conflict, so he tried to prevent the Catholic Church from becoming his enemy. He attempted to convince the Church that his philosophy could actually be compatible with its theology. The other main factor affecting the acceptance of Descartes' philosophy was the period of history in which he lived. Descartes was writing in a time when scientists and philosophers started to develop theories that contrasted with medieval thought. This was around the time that Galileo suffered condemnation because of his theories about the universe. Galileo's condemnation greatly affected Descartes' willingness to express his own views. Fearing that he too would be persecuted, Descartes abandoned the book he was working on
