Extractions: Over the past five years, the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard University has developed a constellation of research initiatives involving religion, the arts, and museums. Each initiative is one dimension of a wider long-term project culminating in the design of a conceptual Museum of World Religions. This ideal "museum" is conceived of as a new kind of institution, one not limited to the display of objects; it is a place for theater, music, dance, film, debate, and symposia, as well as exhibitions involving many types of media and material artifacts. The mission of the CSWR "museum" is to foster understanding of the diversity and richness of the world's religions in a multidisciplinary space for civic and social discoursea holistic and broad vehicle of culture that includes attention to politics, performance, music, the media, economics, the healing arts, the plastic arts, literature, and debate in its exploration of the world's religions. Museums are intellectual spaces for interdisciplinary work on the world's religions. They are crossroads where research, education, and entertainment are all put on display in revealing ways. Cultural institutions such as museums are best conceived of as arenas for comparison and dialogue, and as such are part of the vital environment for research and teaching in the humanities.

In the last two decades, these roles are expanding and being redefined. Because a significant proportion of the material collected in museums across the globe has religious significance, often in the context of living traditions, issues of religion are entering the museum conversation. Throughout the world, a resurgence of interest in spirituality and religion across societies and the renewed commitment to traditions and symbolic artifacts by many living traditions remind museum professionals that they may be, in a very real way, stewards of the sacred. CONFERENCE GOALS To convene and serve as a forum for interdisciplinary conversations among experts in the field who influence policy. To address the ways in which the study of religions is critically important to museums as they wrestle with culturally charged issues involving representation, the politics of display, audience response, and the specialized care of religious artifacts.

Additionally, the group will discuss the trend to move beyond objects and to incorporate performance and other means of artistic expression in museum spaces. "The role of religion in shaping society is hotly contested," said Lawrence Sullivan, CSWR director. "Sacred arts create a special place to thrash out the meaning of religion in a democracy. This meeting gathers a critical mass of leaders and models to provoke a new place for religion in the museum and in society." All portions of the religion and the arts events are open to the press. The keynote addresses and panel discussions are open to the public.
