Extractions: Orthodox America The Cry of the New Martyrs - Appeal for Religious Literature We are aware that there are those in the West who are prepared to send free Bibles and other religious literature to believers in the USSR. This fact was confirmed by Western Christians representing such organizations as Christian Solidarity International and "Glaube in der 2 Welt". [Both these bodies are based in Switzerlanded.] In the name of all our friends, numerous religious believers in Russia and the Baltic states, we thank you for your generosity. The situation whereby millions of people have no access to the Word of God is one of the greatest tragedies afflicting our countries. However, it has come to our attention that Western Christians are alarmed by the existing obstacles to free distribution of Bibles in the USSR. These obstacles are not solely the work of the secular authorities but also, alas, of some of the hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church. This comes as no surprise to those who know the truth about the situation of religion in communist countries. As Russian and Baltic Christians, we consider it our duty to do whatever we can to assist the unimpeded, free distribution of spiritual literature in the USSR; therefore, we have formed a Group to Promote Free Distribution of Religious Literature.

The Coffin Texts Composed on behalf of non-royal personages, and comprise incantations affording protection against hunger, thirst, and the manifold dangers of the netherworld. Incantations for enabling the deceased to assume whatever forms he pleased, by virtue of which he could enjoy his former pastimes and partake of the society of his friends and relatives. The Book of the Dead A heterogeneous assemblage of funerary spells of various dates, including also a few hyms to Ra and Osiris, selections from which were written on papyrus and deposited in the tombs of most well-to-do Egyptians. Extractions: Misnamed "The Book of the Dead" by Arab workers who helped the early Egyptologists in their excavations, the correct translation for this religious text is "The Book of Coming Forth by Day". Unlike our modern myths that the spirits of the dead come out only at night, the Ancient Egyptians believed that the "Ka" or double came out in the daytime. Contained within this text are several common themes that run parallel to Judeo-Christian teachings. Whether the Egyptians borrowed from their Hebrew captives or the Israelites refined Egyptian beliefs will likely never be fully known. Consider the following words spoken by the deceased as he addresses the gods in the Hall of Judgement. "I have given bread to the hungry, water to the thirsty, clothes to the naked, and a boat to one without a boat" And later in the text, in the portion that has come to be known as the "Negative Confessions", we find the rudiments of the 10 Commandments. "I have not impoverished the masses . . . .I have not caused pain. I have not caused anyone to weep. I have not killed. I have not commanded anyone to kill. I have not done that which is harmful to anyone. I have not committed adultery . . . I did not add to the weight of the balance . . . I have not taken milk from the mouths of children."

The most important written work is the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam. There are other types of religious literature, too, including the Sayings of the Prophet (Hadith) , and even poetry and a drama. Poetry, fables, and short stories about non-religious topics were also important to the Muslims. And the Muslims became writers of philosophy, history, science, travel, and other areas of learning. Arabic became an international language for religion, for learning, and for the enjoyment of stories and poems. Unfortunately, many of these works are difficult to translate into English so we can't fully appreciate their beauty. I. Islamic Inspired Writing A. The Qur'an Muslims believe the text of the Qur'an is the Word of God that was passed down to the Prophet Muhammad by the Angel Gabriel. The words were later written by Muhammad's followers. The Qur'an has been the foundation of Muslim life and religion for 1400 years. Its guiding principles (ideas) have inspired many people with its message of monotheism (belief in one God) , human dignity, righteous living, individual responsibility, and social justice.

Religious Literature: Hadith - Sayings of the Prophet Muhammad The religious zeal (enthusiasm) of the early Muslims also inspired the collection of the hadith, the record of the sayings and deeds and traditions of the Prophet Muhammad. After the sudden death of the spiritual and political leader, it was necessary to preserve all of Muhammad's words since they were believed to have been inspired. By the 9th century, the hadith had been solidified into a body of material to which no new traditions were added. Today the hadith is revered (respected, honored) as a major source of religious law and moral guidance, second only to the Qur'an. They are used to guide Muslims in their everyday lives. After each quotation, there is the name of the person who reported having heard it. When all of the quotations were gathered, only those that were from honorable people were included in the final book. The quotations are from those closest to the Prophet Muhammad - his friends, relatives, wives, and close followers. They are organized by topics, such as those below: (Sayings of Muhammad. by Prof. Ghazi Ahmad).

Extractions: Keston News Service 27 March 2001 Despite its international human rights commitments to allow the free publication, import and dissemination of religious literature, the Uzbek government continues to obstruct this right for all religious groups, Keston News Service learnt from religious believers of a variety of faiths in a series of interviews in the Uzbek capital Tashkent in mid-March. Government censorship of all religious literature is enshrined in law and is operated through the government's Committee for Religious Affairs (CRA). The authorities frequently obstruct or ban religious literature they dislike. Foreign Islamic literature is treated with great suspicion, as is Uzbek-language literature about faiths other than Islam. Christians were encouraged when the government granted permission to the Bible Society of Uzbekistan, a broadly-based group affiliated to the United Bible Societies which has official registration, to publish a translation into Uzbek of the Old Testament Book of Proverbs. The translation is to be formally presented in Tashkent's Museum of Applied Arts on 30 March in the presence of government officials, Christian leaders and diplomats. This is the first Bible translation printed in the country in Uzbek, although the Bible Society has imported Uzbek-language New Testaments in the past.

Many of the first European settlers in North America sought refuge from religious persecution in their native countries. Since that time, people of faith and religious institutions have played a central role in the history of this Nation. In the First Amendment, our Bill of Rights recognizes the twin pillars of religious liberty: the constitutional protection for the free exercise of religion, and the constitutional prohibition of the establishment of religion by the state. Our Nation's founders knew that religion helps to give our people the character without which a democracy cannot survive. Our founders also recognized the need for a space of freedom between government and the people that the government must not be permitted to coerce the conscience of any individual or group. In the over 200 years since the First Amendment was included in our Constitution, religion and religious institutions have thrived throughout the United States. In 1993, I was proud to reaffirm the historic place of religion when I signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which restores a high legal standard to protect the exercise of religion from being inappropriately burdened by government action. In the greatest traditions of American citizenship, a broad coalition of individuals and organizations came together to support the fullest protection for religious practice and expression.
