Michigan Case Heard at Supreme Court On April 1, 2003, The Supreme Court heard what is being called the most important civil rights case of this era. The dispute involves the University of Michigan admissions policies, which have been alleged to favor minority students over white students. Some call such policies "affirmative action," while others deem it "reverse discrimination." The question for the Supreme Court, in Grutter et al. v. Bollinger et al. and Gratz v. Bollinger et al. (Nos. 01-1333/1416/1418/1438/1447/1516) is whether or such policies violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, which says in part that no State shall, "deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.""" In oral arguments, attorneys working representing the University of Michigan argued that by having a diverse student body, the education of all students is enriched and also denied that the "point" system constituted a quota. However, attorneys representing the Barbara Grutter and Jennifer Gratz, the plaintiffs in this case, argued that the goal of promoting diversity in the student body was not a sufficiently compelling reason to employ a policy that gives preferential treatment to minority applicants. In addition to counsel for the parties to the case, the Court also heard from Theodore Olsen, solicitor general representing the Bush administration. Olsen argued that the Michigan admissions policy was in fact a quota system and accused the University of using racial stereotypes to break down racial stereotypes.
