Impact study News and views Contacts News and views Media coverage of the project Indonesia-Canada Islamic Higher Education Cooperation , published January 2000 in Into the New Millenium: Indonesia Canada (a publication of the the Embassy of Canada in Jakarta and the Indonesia Canada Chamber of Commerce): For the past 10 years, a unique partnership between Canada and Indonesia has quietly built bridges between the two countries bridges that are contributing to the evolution of the largest Muslim country on the planet. The Indonesia-Canada Islamic Higher Education Project, administered by McGill University, has brought 91 young Muslim teachers from cities across the sprawling archipelago to Montreal to further their studies. The direct result of the program has been to strengthen the teaching, research and management capacities of the State Institutes for Islamic Studies (IAINs) and to support the participation of women in those activities. But the downstream affects are far more profound. "The ultimate goal of the project is to contribute to the development of social equity and stability in Indonesia an ambitious goal. However, the IAINs are seen as playing a key role because of the basic relationship between religion and development in Indonesia," says project director Wendy Allen. "These institutions train about 80 per cent of the teachers for the Islamic education system which includes elementary, junior and senior secondary schools as well as the IAINs. Graduates of the IAINs also work as judges in family courts, journalists and community developers and are active in the large community-based Muslim organizations, Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama, and in non-governmental organizations."

At the undergraduate level, the Department offers a wide array of courses that cover the major religions of the world, with a strong emphasis on their history and their intellectual traditions. At the graduate level, the Department is organized into ten fields: Theology Courses are offered in both Yale College and the Yale Graduate School, with a strong interdisciplinary bent. Religious Studies courses at the undergraduate level in Yale College lead to the Bachelor of Arts degree (B.A.); courses at the graduate level lead to the Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D.). The Department of Religious Studies maintains strong ties to a number of other departments in Yale College and the Yale Graduate School, including History, Philosophy, American Studies, Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, and East Asian Languages and Civilizations. It posits an evolutionary process within all manifestation and identifies life with the cosmic process. It is the exact opposite of materialism, and brings the supernatural deity, predicated by the religionist, into the position of a great Entity or Life, Who is evolving through, and by means of, the universe, just as man is evolving consciousness through the medium of an objective physical body. In these three standpoints - the frankly materialistic, the purely supernatural, and the idealistic - you have the three main lines of thought which have been put forward as explanatory of the cosmic process; all of them are partial truths, yet none of them is complete without the others; all of them, when followed alone, lead into byways and into darkness, and leave the central mystery still unsolved. When synthesized, when brought together and blended, and when unified, they embody, perhaps (I offer this simply as a suggestion) just as much of the evolutionary truth [16] as it is possible for the human mind to grasp at the present stage of evolution. We are dealing with large problems, and tampering, perhaps, with high and lofty things; we are trespassing into regions which are the recognized domain of metaphysics; and we are endeavoring to sum up in a few brief talks what all the libraries of the world are embodying; we are therefore attempting the impossible. All that we can do is to take up briefly and cursorily first one aspect of the truth and then another. All we can possibly accomplish is an outline of the basic lines of evolution, a study of their relationship to each other and to ourselves as conscious entities, and then an endeavor to blend and synthesize the little we can know until some general idea of the process as a whole becomes clearer.

Extractions: Library's Collection Development Objectives The LSU Libraries strives to support teaching and research in religion throughout the university community, but also recognizes the interests of the thirteen active campus religious student organizations. The library collections provide curricular support for the Religious Studies Program, emphasizing investigations of significant and universal expressions of human experience and incorporating the great religious traditions of the world (Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), as well as smaller beliefs and cultures. The interdisciplinary course of study offers both a major and minor in religion with an approach that brings together perspectives from a variety of areas, including history, philosophy, literature, and anthropology. Curriculum Program Descriptions The Religious Studies Program is housed within the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences. There are ten faculty members in the program and all have Ph.D. degrees. The teaching staff includes four professors (one emeritus), four associate professors, and two assistant professors. The Program offers a major and minor in Religious Studies. Several courses in the curriculum will also fulfill general education requirements for undergraduates in other majors. Extractions: The Department of Theology and Religious Studies at King's is one of the largest and most distinguished in Britain. On the staff are several leading specialists with international reputations. In the most recent (2001) and in the previous three national research assessment exercises the Department has achieved a '5' rating. At the moment there are about 150 postgraduates in the Department, full-time and part-time, from Britain and overseas. The Department offers the research degrees of MPhil and PhD, an extensive taught Masters programme, and a Diploma. We stress the importance of training in the methodology and skills required for postgraduate work. Students enjoy impressive study facilities. Library resources are second to none. The College's own library contains 800,000 volumes, and its holdings in Theology and Religious Studies reflect the long and eminent tradition of theological study at King's. It also recently inherited books from the Sion College Library. The University of London's library at Senate House is a short walk away, and access can usually be arranged to the British Library, one of the world's great libraries, which is also nearby. The King's Computer Centre is superbly equipped, with a special laboratory and advisory service for Humanities users. The Language and Communication Centre provides foreign language training for postgraduates, including tuition orientated to particular research projects. The English Language Unit runs courses for overseas and European Community students who wish to improve their English.

Not only are approaches therefore very different, but so too are the results. This programme explores different methods and approaches. By looking at religion from a variety of perspectives, it affords a comprehensive and sophisticated view of religious systems, beliefs, doctrines and cultures. As a student, you will be able to conduct research in a range of different disciplines, analysing their comparative strengths and weaknesses. You will also have the opportunity to create your own interdisciplinary perspective. In the first year you will undertake a foundation course examining the theory and methods of different disciplines, and two options on the study of religion from within different disciplines. In the final year you will complete a further two options, an interdisciplinary seminar focusing on the relationship between disciplines and a dissertation. This work was started in August, 1998. One of the biggest problems was a proposed tax of about thirty three million tugrigs (over $30,000 USD). Another was to get official permission for UBTC to operate. By God's grace everything has been resolved positively. 2. We also organized training on basic understanding of the Law for the officers who carry all the paper work for the Churches. This training has five parts, each part havuing twelve hours of lessons. The lessons were taught by Mongolian State University's Dr. D. Battumur, Constitutional Lawyer V. Udval, professor of the State University of Law Dr. Monhjargal.T, and State great Hural's officer U. Enhtovshin. The topics covered included logical thinking, communication, government organization, how to handle the paper work and general understanding of the law. The course was finished on 07 March and all the students received a certificate. For budgeting each person paid 14000 tugrigs (approx. $14.00 USD). It could not cover the total cost, but by the God's grace JCS helped with $200.00 USD to cover the rest of the cost. We want to express our thankfulness.
