Extractions: Philip Remler, American interim ambassador to Georgia stated last week that there were a lot of Al-Qaeda and Taliban gunmen dispersed all over the Caucasus. The Guardian newspaper wrote that the Pankissky gorge was the area that belonged to the republic of Georgia, but its government did not have the power over there, so the gorge was a way for the Chechen terrorists and foreign extremists to penetrate in Chechnya. Remler also said that dozens of the gunmen from Al-Qaeda movement had left the territory of Afghanistan and was currently hiding in the mountains of the Caucasus. Remler said he had the information, which said that some of the guerrillas were hiding in the Pankissky gorge and were in contact with the Arab terrorist Khattab, who in his turn communicated with Osama bin Laden. The Pankissky gorge is an extremely dangerous place for Geogria, said Remler.

This is the latest in a series of Helsinki Commission hearings that examine the state of democratization and human rights in individual countries and regions of the former Soviet Union. In the late 1980's, Georgians began to organize politically to undo communism and to gain independence. They lived through a very exciting period, although a key element in the chronicle of the liberation movement was tragic, the April 1989 killings of peaceful protesters in Tbilisi by Soviet forces. Since then, however, Georgia has endured very difficult times. It has been one of the most strife-torn New Independent States, a victim of internal political and ethnic divisiveness, and external provocation and aggression.

Extractions: COLCHIS, THE LAND OF THE GOLDEN FLEECE, REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA Ancient Greek legends told of a fabulously wealthy land where Jason and the Argonauts stole the Golden Fleece from King Aeetes with the help of his daughter Medea. It was a distant land that was reached by the Black Sea and down the River Phasis. The actual site of this legendary kingdom has never been found but the Greeks must have been greatly impressed by the Colchis region of Georgia, through which the River Phasis (currently the Rioni River) runs, for such stories to have been born. Geographically, ancient Colchis comprised the land bounded by the Black Sea to the west, the Caucasus Mountains to the north, the Surami Range to the east and the Meskhetian Mountains to the south. In this fertile, sheltered area, Colchian civilization flourished. Their Late Bronze Age (15th to 8th Century BC) saw the development of an expertise in the smelting and casting of metals that began long before this skill was mastered in Europe. Sophisticated farming implements were made and fertile, well-watered lowlands blessed with a mild climate promoted the growth of progressive agricultural techniques. It is likely that the Golden Fleece existed. Earlier in this century, remote mountain villagers in Svaneti (a part of ancient Colchis) were observed using sheepskins to trap the fine gold particles in the rivers that flowed from the Caucasus Mountains. The skins would then be dried and beaten to shake out their contents. However, it is debatable as to whether or not the legendary 'wealth' of Colchis referred only to gold. Archaeological evidence dates the earliest Greek imports of painted pottery and amphorae to the end of the 7th Century BC. In exchange, it is thought that Greeks sought the rich natural resources of Colchis including wood and metal ores as well as textiles. Even today, the mountain slopes remain heavily forested and the Ancient Greek writer, Herodotus, referred to the superior quality of Colchian linen.

Because of the presence of land mines and high incidence of kidnapping, visitors are advised to avoid travelling near the Russian border region, especially Chechnya, Dagestan, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Kabarda-Balkar and Karachay-Cherkessia. The breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia should also be avoided.

It's best not to toast while drinking beer; it's regarded as a subtle insult. During Soviet rule, Georgian restaurants spread through the republic, and are still favourite haunts for discerning foodies throughout Russia and its former states. Each part of Georgia has its unique cuisine with flavours derived from spice combinations, but as a rule, a focus on herbs and garlic predominates. The only difficulty you will experience buying food will be because the locals are so keen to give it away! Cafes and restaurants mostly serve Georgian and more traditional European food, while fast food restaurants offer local dishes such as khinkali, kabab, barbecue and khachapuri.
