    Extractions: The most urgent problem facing the newly independent United States was how to pay for the war that won the country its freedom; America's debt was enormous. The nation's greatest asset was the land west of the Ohio River, but in order to sell this huge territory, it first had to be surveyed - that is, measured out and mapped. And before that could be done, a uniform set of measurements had to be chosen for the new republic out of the morass of roughly 100,000 different units that were in use in daily life. At the story's center is Thomas Jefferson, who established the democratic principles by which the land survey would be conducted. The shapes that the frontier assumed came from the depths of his intellect and have been deeply ingrained ever since in our national character.

British soldiers and American patriots fought at Lexington, Massachusetts and nearby Concord. In 1783 the Treaty of Paris ended the war. Great Britain was forced to recognize the independence of the 13 colonies of the United States. Harder - The Revolutionary War in America (1775-1783) led to the birth of a new nation. The war began on April 19, 1775 with the Battles of Lexington and Concord. For about a decade, tension had been mounting between Great Britain and the American Colonies. The British government had passed a series of laws in an attempt to increase control over the colonies. But Americans had become used to having control over their local government. They objected to the new laws and protested being taxed without their consent. In 1775, Britain's Parliament declared Massachusetts, the center of most of the protests, to be in rebellion. British troops were placed in Boston to take swift action against the rebels. Shortly afterwards, war broke out.

    Extractions: The Smithsonian Associates Civil War Studies Tour, August 19, 2001, led by Edwin C. Bearss Pierre L'Enfant recognized this site as strategically significant and recommended that a fort be built on Pea Patch Island to defend the cities of Philadelphia and New York. Several forts have been located here since 1819. This concrete and brick version was finished in 1859, two years before the Civil War. The property extends over six acres, with 32-foot high granite and brick walls, from seven to thirty feet thick. The sally port is entered by a drawbridge over a 30 foot wide moat. It was armed with three tiers of guns. Twenty-five million bricks were used to build the fort and interior buildings, which includes circular granite stairways. Wooden barracks were built on the perimeter to house the Confederate prisoners of war. The first prisoners were casualties from the Battle of Kernstown in 1862, and most of the 1863 prisoners from Gettysburg were brought here, staying for the remainder of the war. A total of 32,000 prisoners passed through Fort Delaware. While conditions were not admirable, it was relatively disease free with a low death rate of 7.2%, compared to Andersonville (15%) and Elmyra (22%). Most of the 2,700 prisoners who died here are buried at nearby Finn's Point, New Jersey.
