Extractions: Illinois Department of Natural Resources Endangered Aquatic Species in Illinois When you hear about endangered species, do you think of animals that live in the rainforests of South America, the whales that live in our oceans or the elephants and rhinoceros that live in Africa? Did you know that we have endangered species right here in Illinois, too? You don't have to live in an exotic place in order to understand that there are all kinds of species that are threatened with extinction. In Illinois, there are over 500 species of plants and animals that are listed as endangered or threatened - that is, in danger of disappearing from the wild within the borders of our state. Over 55 percent of them depend on wetlands or other aquatic habitats for survival. Aquatic Habitats There are a wide variety of aquatic habitats, including lakes, ponds, rivers, streams and wetlands. Each of these habitat types is unique and complex. A pond is not simply a miniature version of a lake, nor is a stream just a miniature version of a big river, even though it might look that way at first glance. Each of these habitats has small differences that make it unique, like the kind of substrate at the bottom (such as clay, sand, gravel or boulders) or whether the water is standing still or moving and moving fast or slow.
Extractions: Generally, an endangered species is an organism in danger of disappearing from the face of the earth if its situation is not improved. When its race has not been seen in the wild for over fifty years, we say that it is extinct. Those species that may soon become endangered are called threatened species. Rare animals are species with small populations that may also be at risk. In this image gallery there are over 100 photos of unique and amazing endangered species. Catch them here by clicking on the thumbnails below. But remember, these images may be all that remain if nothing is done about things like habitat destruction, rainforest burning, and illegal poaching. Click away! This partial list, compiled in June, 1999, presents only a fraction of the species at risk of extinction today and does not include tens of thousands of species whose status we do not yet know. Hundreds of species without common names have been left out, which means that while many mammals are on this list, only a few insects and molluscs are included.
Extractions: Ten Questions About The Endangered Species Act 1. Why do we have an Endangered Species Act? he short answer is that the Endangered Species Act ultimately protects us. The long answer involves scientific, economic, aesthetic and philosophical components. The Endangered Species Act is intended to address the serious problem of human-caused acceleration of the species extinction rate. Biologists estimate that in the past 150 years, human activities have increased the global extinction rate by hundreds if not thousands of times, producing the greatest extinction event since the decline of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. According to noted biologist E. O. Wilson, we may be losing up to 50,000 species per year, potentially resulting in the loss of more than 20 percent of the world's species by the year 2025. Humans rely on biological diversity for food, medicines, recreation and ecosystem services such as providing clean water and clean air.

Extractions: Project Scope and Relationship to China's Agenda 21 This project seeks to protect various endangered animal species that since ancient times have been used in traditional Chinese medicine, particularly through the research and development of alternative sources. This project is based on Chapter 15 - Conservation of Biodiversity, and is related to Chapter 9 - Heath and Sanitation of China's Agenda 21. 1. Background Certain animal species have yielded potent and effective ingredients for use in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Examples include the use of rhinoceros horn for reducing fever and cleaning the body of toxic materials, and the use of tiger bone for relieving pain and strengthening bones. Yet many of the animals used in traditional Chinese medicine are now threatened and endangered in China and around the world because of large scale deforestation, ecosystem destruction and hunting. The rhinoceros, for example, which was once found in China, has now dwindled to a worldwide level of ten thousand, only one-tenth of the total number existing in the 1950s. Only seven thousand tigers are still in existence, and a number of species unique to China, such as the musk deer, are fast disappearing. Others have already become extinct, such as the rare species of Saiga antelope once found in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Extractions: Protection of Endangered Species The protection of an endangered species is a serious matter. When a species becomes extinct, it affects the entire ecosystem in which the species lives. When the dinosaurs became extinct this affected the entire planet. This is a natural cause of extinction. On average, man kills 11 unknown species off every day. This must stop! Before you continue reading, you need to know the meanings of some of the words as defined by the United Nations. Commercial Activity means all activities of industry and trade, including, but not limited to, the buying or selling of commodities and activities conducted for the purpose of facilitating such buying and selling: Provided, however, that it does not include exhibitions of commodities by museums or similar cultural or historical organizations. Conserve, Conserving, and Conservation mean to use and the use of all methods and procedures which are necessary to bring any endangered species or threatened species to the point at which the measures provided pursuant to this Act are no longer necessary. Such methods and procedures include, but are not limited to, all activities associated with scientific resources management such as research, census, law enforcement, habitat acquisition and maintenance, propagation, live trapping, and trans- plantation, and, in the extraordinary case where population pressures within a given ecosystem cannot be otherwise relieved, may include regulated taking.
