Extractions: Since the first Puritan settlement founded in June 1636 by Roger Williams and friends as a "shelter for people distressed of conscience," Providence, the capital of Rhode Island, has had a rich history of immigration and celebrated cultural diversity. Situated at the mouth of the Seekonk and Providence rivers and at the head of Narragansett Bay, Providence quickly went from a poor farming community to a bustling seaport in the colonial era. It became a major manufacturing center for textiles in the nineteenth century, and in the last century it was known for metal work and jewelry. This was when unprecedented numbers of immigrants flooded the city and changed its character. Lately, Providence has become a growing regional business center. When the British occupied Newport during the Revolutionary War, the state capital was moved to Providence. Shared with Newport, the state capital was permanently moved to Providence in 1900. The Rhode Island State House, finished in 1900, is a beautiful architectural structure of white Georgian marble with the second largest self-supported marble dome in the world.
