Joanna Priestley - Biography Ms. Priestley studied painting and printmaking at rhode island school of designand Norway), Humboldt College and numerous other colleges and media centers. http://users.easystreet.com/joanna/filmog/bio.htm
Extractions: Joanna Priestley was born and grew up in Oregon. She attributes her interest in animation to a toy zoetrope (slotted revolving drum with animated drawings inside) on a turntable that she had as a child, to the Oregon weather and to a grandmother that did china painting. She has also lived in Ketchum, Idaho, Lahaina, Maui, Paris, Providence, Rhode Island, Volda, Norway, Berkeley and Valencia, California. In Valencia, She attended Cal Arts (the school founded by Walt Disney to provide talent for his studio) where she worked in the film library and met fellow film librarian, Paul Harrod. They reconnected after a decade and got married a few years ago. Mr. Harrod is a director and production designer of commercial animation. He designed the Kore pop-up card from the home page. Ms. Priestley and Mr. Harrod live on a houseboat with a cactus. The drawing above is from VOICES (1993-95). Ms. Priestley doesn't have a flip hairdo anymore. Most of Priestley's films take two years to make. She does all the work by hand in a variety of techniques and feels quite smug if she has an assistant to help her. Ms. Priestley also enjoys tribal belly dancing (no day-glo colors or sequins and lots of people dancing together), hiking in the ancient forest and participating as a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (get lots of cool video cassettes and CDs).

Appendix A - Resources For Technical Assistance Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, rhode island, Vermont. help states, LEAs, teachers, school library and 12 classrooms, library media centers, adult literacy http://www.ed.gov/offices/OESE/MEP/PrelimGuide/appendix.html
Extractions: Preliminary Guidance for Migrant Education Program, Title I, Part C Public Law 103-382 To help all children reach high academic standards, many states, school districts, and schools will need a new kind of technical assistance. They will need comprehensive assistance that is driven by the needs of families and children and that can provide tools and information to help them leverage all available resources in order to improve teaching and learning for all children. To that end, the Department is creating regional technical assistance centers to provide comprehensive, high-quality assistance and information. The Depart ment is also changing the way it relates to the field by shifting its focus from monitoring for compliance to providing support to enhance program quality. The Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE), which houses the Office of Migrant Education, has a new organizational structure that is built around ten regional service teams. Existing program offices, including the Office of Migrant Education, will retain a small program base, but will provide most services to OESE grantees through teams that have staff with expertise in OESE's programs. This new structure signals a new relationship with states and local operating agencies. Rather than focus on providing program-specific advice, the restructured OESE will use cross-program teams to encourage and support state and local efforts to integra te services and collaborate across programs. In anticipation of this change, OESE began in 1994-95 to conduct integrated reviews of federally funded education programs. Integrated reviews are on-site observations and assessments performed by a team of s taff members from two or more program offices within the Department. Each focused on the progress of systemic reform efforts within a state and explored how individual federal programs fit within that broad reform effort. The Office of Migrant Education participated in all of the initial integrated reviews.

Age Unlike national trends that show the greatest rates of suicide among people over 65, suicide rates in Rhode Island during the period 1992-1996 are evenly distributed across all age groups, with rates peaking at ages 40-44 (14.5/100,000)*. Note: Rates are not age-adjusted Race While the number of suicides among whites far exceeds those among minority groups, the suicide attempt rate for blacks is almost twice as high as for whites (124.4/100,000 vs. 65.3/100,000 respectively). The rate of suicide for all races combined during the period 1992-1996 were 9.6/100,000. YRBS According to 1997 YRBS data, 24% of high school students in Rhode Island seriously considered attempting suicide in the past 12 months compared to 20.5% nationwide, and 10% attempted suicide in the past 12 months compared to 7.7% nationwide.

School Health Award Helps Students To Learn HEALTHri media Releases. to fund state and local partnerships to develop schoolbasedhealth This program will benefit all rhode island students by supporting http://www.healthri.org/media/970404a.htm
Extractions: DATE: April 4, 1997 School Health Award Helps Students to Learn Dr. Patricia A. Nolan, Director of the RI Department of Health, today announced receipt of a four-year, $1,450,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundations Making The Grade Program to fund state and local partnerships to develop school-based health centers. This program will benefit all Rhode Island students by supporting excellence in school-based health services. "School-based health centers bring quality preventive health services to kids where they are. Students are better prepared to learn when their health needs are addressed. Its difficult to concentrate on a tough math problem if something hurts or something is bothering you. Many of these students have no regular source of health care," according to Dr Nolan. Rhode Island has three school-based health centers now: Providence Central High School, Woonsocket Middle School, and Central Falls Junior-Senior High School.
