Extractions: A new State vocational high school will emphasize workplace experience over classroom instruction. The Metropolitian Regional Career and Technical Center , or the MET , is a radical departure from traditional vocational schools becausestudents, in theory, would learn curriculum basics, Social Studies, Math, Science and English on the job, not in the classroom. Providence Journal Bulletin Saturday, May 18, 1996 - Elizabeth Rau "Grant to strengthen links between schools, employers " For younger students, the federal grant may bring careerday speakers and educational materials, and for older students and graduates, it could provide career counseling, field trips to local companies and paid internships. Warwick - The School-to-Work Partnership has awarded a grant of an expected $200,000 to consolidate and expand career-guidance and training for Warwick students. The program, designed by Rosemary Sullivan Zinns, director of institutional advancement for CCRI , will bring together the efforts of nearly a dozen groups to provide work experience and strengthrn the linkbetween student's education and career interests. The plan is designed for students from kindergarten through college. The plan also calls for counseling parents on how to best help their children explore career options. Grant money will also go to hire substitute teachers so regular teachers and counselors can undergo training and to purchase career-assessment materials.

Extractions: Rhode Island has been actively pursing the involvement and commitment of administrators and decision makers from education, employment, government and community in developing an implementation plan for building a statewide system of school-to-work transition. The School-to-Work initiative in the state is governed by the HRIC School-to-Work Transition Subcommittee. This subcommittee is co-chaired by the Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Director of the Department of Employment and Training and consists of members from the business and education communities, elected officials and a representative from the Governor's office. A primary incentive for Rhode Island to establish and maintain a statewide school-to- work transition system is the decision to provide all of its current and future citizens with the opportunities to become skilled workers and to enjoy a high standard of life in a high skills, high wage economy. To respond to this challenge, Rhode Island has established a collaborative approach to economic development, education reform and workforce enhancement. Under the leadership of the Department of Employment and Training and Department of Education, a broad partnership has been formed in the state to build a comprehensive, integrated state system that provides the infrastructure to guide and support local program development of school-to-work opportunities for all students.

Working Wonders Video Project Year 2 Technical Center, Provide remote vocational/career programs rhode island Schoolfor the Deaf, Provide effective means Interact with other schools for the deaf http://www.ri.net/RINET/ivid/workwondvideoyr2.html
Extractions: Warwick Veterans Memorial High School The videoconferencing equipment awarded through the Working Wonders program will allow each of these schools to broaden their instructional capabilities by allowing real time communications with other students, instructors, and academic experts that would otherwise be beyond geographical or financial reach. The addition of advanced videoconferencing capabilities will also greatly benefit teachers and staff members by offering more opportunities for professional development, training, and collaboration with colleagues at other institutions. These schools envision a wide range of applications that will take advantage of their new videoconferencing capabilities. Here are some examples: High quality videoconferencing capabilities will for the first time make real time communications over the Internet available to students of the Rhode Island School for the Deaf (RISD). Streaming video utilizing low frame rates and low resolution may be satisfactory for some applications, but it is highly unsuitable for communication using sign language. The Polycom videoconferencing unit and ATM network connection will provide students with the ability to communicate effectively via sign language to remote locations. RISD coordinators have identified several other schools for the deaf in locations such as Texas and California that already have videoconferencing capabilities and can serve as resources for distance learning and remote collaboration.
