Joseph Merlin, a Belgian, invented a skate that "skittered" across the floor on small wooden wheels. The hobby didnt take off at all, and Merlin emigrated to England. In the 1800s, the Dutch used wooden wheels on their ice skates so they could continue skating in the summer. Roller skates appeared on the ballet stage in 1818 in Berlin, and were also seen on the streets of Paris. In England, this form of recreation was referred to as "rinking". The skates of those times, however, only went in a straight line they couldnt turn and they had no breaking mechanism, so once again the pastime faded away. Roller skating finally made its way to North America in the late 1830s, with European manufacturers still dominating skate designs for several years. This year, USARS and the AAU will select the Top 30 roller hockey players in America that competed in the 16u and 19u divisions at the 2002 United States Championships and from the 2002 All-American team which was announced at the 2002 AAU Junior Olympics to compete for the privilege of wearing USA on their jersey and represent the United States at the 2003 FIRS Junior World Championships in Czechoslovakia. Also at this camp USARS and the AAU are proud to present the first Future Prospects Camp as we will bring in 30 of the top 12u and 14u players from around the country to work with the Team USA coaching staff to identify and help develop the future Team USA players. It is likely that the first roller skates were an adaptation of ice skates and were used for transportation rather than sport.The first recognized inventor of roller skates was a Belgian manufacturer named Joseph Merlin. She began her very successful career in roller skating as a child. As a competitor, she represented one of the Portland, OR rinks - first the Imperial Rink (now closed), and then the Oaks. Away from the rink, Susan is a registered nurse (RN) at one of the local hospitals. She also enjoys reading, and "being a couch potato." A frequent visitor to Disneyland & Disney World, she's been accused of having "mouse blood". She and her husband, Gary, travel extensively. A particularly rewarding and proud moment in Susan's "roller skating life" was in 1978. She had the pleasure of seeing her daughter, Tiffany, and Tif's partner Ric Kolibaba win the National Championships in Elementary Pairs, exactly 25 years after Susan had won the event.

Getting up and practicing as early as 3 a.m. and then staying for four hours and getting only five minute brakes in between. How many competitions you enter, how many times you become depressed or arent happy with what you did when you come off the ice. Well ,I do; I'm Tara Kristen Lipinski. I had very helpful parents through my childhood. My early career no one really noticed me, but I still tried my best. Many people know me for my main achievement, wining the gold and getting into the history books. Some consider me an American hero because I brought a lot of pride to America and have made a lot of achievements in my eighteen years. I was born in Sugerland, Texas on June 10, 1982. I skated for the first time when I was three. It wasnt on the ice though it was actually on roller skates. In all the time that I roller-skated I won over fifty plaques, medals and trophies. When I was six that is when I first stepped onto the ice and started to skate. At first I was terrible but about forty five minutes later I got the hang of it and started to transfer everything that I had learned in roller skating to ice skating. I continued to split my time between the two for three years, and then I finally decided to go with ice-skating. I first skated at the University of Delaware. I quit school and got a tutor because of my training hours. Later I moved to Blooming hills, Michigan. I advanced from first lesson to national medallist in six years. I usually woke as early as 3am for pre dawn skating sessions. I receive three to four hour tutoring and am an A student. At 12 and 1 month I became the youngest athlete to ever win a gold medal at the Olympic festival. I became a national medallist at age 13. At that age I had set some high goals for myself I said I want to go to the Olympics and win.
