Extractions: ROLLER SPORTS HISTORY Evolution Competition Apparel Sport in Transition THE EARLY YEARS Roller skates were first invented in Europe in the 1760s. Joseph Merlin, a Belgian, invented a skate that "skittered" across the floor on small wooden wheels. The hobby didnt take off at all, and Merlin emigrated to England. In the 1800s, the Dutch used wooden wheels on their ice skates so they could continue skating in the summer. Roller skates appeared on the ballet stage in 1818 in Berlin, and were also seen on the streets of Paris. In England, this form of recreation was referred to as "rinking". The skates of those times, however, only went in a straight line they couldnt turn and they had no breaking mechanism, so once again the pastime faded away. Roller skating finally made its way to North America in the late 1830s, with European manufacturers still dominating skate designs for several years. EVOLUTION OF THE ROLLER SKATE Following is a summary of the major known developments and technological improvements of the roller skate, from its origins in Europe, to the inline skates which are so popular today. Extractions: History of the Inline-Skates No one is really sure when the first roller skates were used. It is likely that the first roller skates were an adaptation of ice skates and were used for transportation rather than sport. The first recognized inventor of roller skates was a Belgian manufacturer named Joseph Merlin. He produced the first roller skates with metal wheels in 1760. He presented his invention in London at a formal ball and rolled across the floor playing an expensive violin. The story is told that because his skates were unable to be turned or stopped, he glided gracefully into a huge mirror and suffered serious injuries. New Yorker James Plimpton solved the problem of controlling skates in 1863. Plimpton's skates used a rubber cushion to anchor the axles. This cushion would compress when the body was leaned, enabling the wheels of the skate to turn slightly when the skater shifted his or her weight. Plimpton's design is considered the basis for the modern roller skate.

Extractions: "Why do the Olympics exclude roller skating?" asks Lewis (Behind the Big Top) in his history of the sport, including speed skating, hockey and dancing on skates. Skates were developed in England in 1760, and ball-bearing wheels were introduced in the U.S. in the 1880s. Roller hockey began soon thereafter in the Midwest, speed skating started just before WWI and roller dancing arrived on the scene in the 1930s. Originally a pastime for the rich, roller skating fell into disfavor as roller rinks proliferated in seedy areas. The most damaging blow to its prestige, however, was the so-called Roller Derby, begun in Chicago in 1935, which turned violent after WWII and was put on TV. Lewis almost answers his own question about Olympic exclusion when he shows how inept the governing body of the U.S. Amateur Confederation of Roller Skating is. Given the book's narrow focus, it is unlikely to hold much interest for a general audience. Photos not seen by PW. Given the popularity of all types of skatingon the ice, on the boards, and on the streetswhy isn't roller skating an Olympic event? Author David H. Lewis sought out people involved in every aspect of the sport in an attempt to answer this question. He talked to competition judges and coaches, rink operators and rink organists, and scores of skaters from around the world. The answers he foundand there are manyare likely to anger and astound readers in turn. Those answers, along with a wealth of information on the world of roller skating past, present and future, are detailed Whether you skate for the love of it, or have higher aspirations in the world on wheels, "Roller Skating for Gold" is fascinating and illuminating reading.

Extractions: Tara Kristen Lipinski Have you ever wondered how hard it is to win a gold metal? Have you ever wondered how much hard work and dedication it takes? Getting up and practicing as early as 3 a.m. and then staying for four hours and getting only five minute brakes in between. How many competitions you enter, how many times you become depressed or arent happy with what you did when you come off the ice. Well ,I do; I'm Tara Kristen Lipinski. I had very helpful parents through my childhood. My early career no one really noticed me, but I still tried my best. Many people know me for my main achievement, wining the gold and getting into the history books. Some consider me an American hero because I brought a lot of pride to America and have made a lot of achievements in my eighteen years. I was born in Sugerland, Texas on June 10, 1982. I skated for the first time when I was three. It wasnt on the ice though it was actually on roller skates. In all the time that I roller-skated I won over fifty plaques, medals and trophies. When I was six that is when I first stepped onto the ice and started to skate. At first I was terrible but about forty five minutes later I got the hang of it and started to transfer everything that I had learned in roller skating to ice skating. I continued to split my time between the two for three years, and then I finally decided to go with ice-skating. I first skated at the University of Delaware. I quit school and got a tutor because of my training hours. Later I moved to Blooming hills, Michigan. I advanced from first lesson to national medallist in six years. I usually woke as early as 3am for pre dawn skating sessions. I receive three to four hour tutoring and am an A student. At 12 and 1 month I became the youngest athlete to ever win a gold medal at the Olympic festival. I became a national medallist at age 13. At that age I had set some high goals for myself I said I want to go to the Olympics and win.
