Special Categories POLICY BACKGROUND Prior to the adoption of Dewey 19, the UIUC Library used a variety of special numbers for both individual and collective biographies, in addition to "B.", which was assigned for individual biography, and 921-928 for collective biography. Many of the previously used numbers for both individual and collective biographies have been discontinued in Dewey. In accordance with the policy that was established at the adoption of Dewey 19, "B." is no longer used in establishing new biography numbers. Under 920, only 920.001-920.09 and 920.7 are used for very general collective biographies. Most new (unestablished) individual biographies , as well as other, subject specific collective biographies, are currently classed by subject , adding either standard subdivision (for individual biography), or (for collective biography) as appropriate from Table 1. For purposes of establishing a consistent policy regarding the use of previously established biography numbers versus when to establish new biography numbers, CPAC voted in 1997 in favor of a

Extractions: ENGLISH The Dewey Decimal Classification system is used to classify books by grouping them in ten categories. It was devised by Melvil Dewey in 1873. It is the most widely used library classification system in the world. It is used in more than 135 countries and has been translated into over 30 languages. Overview Every book in the library is given a unique call number to serve as an address for locating the book on the shelf. The call number itself is composed of two parts - the Dewey Decimal Classification and the Cutter number or book number. The Dewey system has ten main classes, which are listed below. The first digit in each three-digit number represents the main class. For example, 500 represents natural sciences and mathematics. 000 Generalities The second digit in each three-digit number indicates the division. For example, 500 is used for general works on the sciences, 510 for mathematics, 520 for astronomy, 530 for physics. The third digit in each three-digit number indicates the section. Thus, 530 is used for general works on physics, 531 for classical mechanics, 532 for fluid mechanics, 533 for gas mechanics.
