Sports Factor - 6/9/2002: Olympic Sports - Whats Hot & Whats Not? look like theyre going to get the nod are rugby and golf, which were in fact bothon the olympic program in very early Games; what do these sports have that http://www.abc.net.au/rn/talks/8.30/sportsf/stories/s665504.htm
Extractions: Amanda Smith: Yes, theyre all sports that at one time have been part of the Olympic Games, but that got the chop. Other discontinued Olympic events include live pigeon shooting, rope-climbing, an obstacle race and something called the plunge for distance, in swimming. So if youre one of those people who thinks synchronised swimming is a strange and silly thing to have in the Olympics, well, thereve been plenty of others in the past that you could put in that category as well. Now, late last week, the Programme Commission of the International Olympic Committee released a report with its recommendations for what sports it wants in, and out, of future Olympic Games, for Beijing and beyond. On the out-list: modern pentathlon, which has been in a shaky position for a while. The more surprising exclusions though are baseball, and softball. And those favoured for inclusion: golf and rugby. Theyve been recommended ahead of a long list of other Olympic aspirants, including squash, surfing, dance sport, bowling and chess.

Extractions: STEPHEN JONES Well, there are a few matters that we can all agree upon. Surely. Anyone who attended any part of the Commonwealth Games, or anyone who as much as walked the Manchester streets, or even anyone who saw it on television, will conclude that the city and people of Manchester had a full-scale sporting phenomenon on their hands. The party atmosphere for the Sevens alone was marvellous. Nor is it at stake that New Zealand are the best Sevens team in the World. They were superb in Manchester, the only team not to look shattered by the end. They were quick and clever and unlike some of the home nations, they looked as if they had a specific Sevens plan, rather than bungling through. It is more contentious to suggest that they were given help. But frankly, I found the effort of the Australian referee in the final little short of distasteful. For a long time, New Zealand rugby propaganda was so successful that parts of the World and referees themselves actually believed that Kiwis were always getting on with the game and playing positively and only the other teams were trying to cheat.

Like its predecessors, the Lakeshore Foundation fitness, recreation and education center offers state-of-the-art-training facilities as well as sports medicine and sports science services for Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls. We salute the USOC for this important and positive step forward for all of the athletes it is chartered to serve, said Lakeshore Foundation President, Jeff Underwood. There is no greater symbol of the pursuit of excellence and athletic achievement in our country than those five Olympic rings, and we have worked hard to develop a facility and staff worthy of this association with USOC. We are particularly delighted to offer our nations leading athletes a training site of this caliber in a barrier-free environment. From this point forward, the road to Athens in 2004 and to Beijing in 2008 will come through Birmingham for many of the U.S. athletes participating in those upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games. This designation gives our community and the State of Alabama a permanent and ongoing involvement in the U.S. Olympic movement and a tremendous source of pride.

Extractions: SYDNEY (Reuters) Nothing beats home field advantage at the Olympic Games. Although profits, ticket sales and television ratings provide methods of comparing different Olympics, it is the achievements of the local athletes that give each Games a unique flavor. By that measure, Sydney promises to be one of the most exhilarating Games in modern Olympic history. Australians already pride themselves on their sporting achievements but even by their own lofty standards, the Games are shaping up as a watershed for a country that treats sport as seriously as religion or politics. Colonized at a time when organized sport was starting to take root in Britain, Australians have had a love affair with sport since the first white settlers arrived in 1788. And now, whether by design or coincidence, Australia is in the middle of a golden age of sport unrivalled since Melbourne hosted the 1956 Olympics.
