Extractions: INSTALLING A TOAD BRAKING SYSTEM : When Jim Church read about the benefits of a towed vehicle braking system elsewhere at this site, he decided to research the available systems and do the installation himself. In this article he documents his experience installing such a system on his own diesel pusher. While thisis not a project for the casual do-it-yourself RVers, it provides a helpful overview of how the system works, and several cautions to observe. EMERGENCY SHUT DOWN : We experienced a sudden engine shut down which put us at the side of a narrow country road. We concluded we probably hadn't fully thought through all the steps which we might have taken in that situation; and when the problem was finally cured, we decided we'd share this experience along with some helpful tips for how best to proceed in this situation. SAFE DRIVING 101 : We're pleased to welcome back Bob (Ram Muessig), who offers this "must read" article on the basics of RV safety. Safety is a theme of considerable interest to many of our readers, and we're pleased to add to our extensive safety resources with this article. PRIMER ON TOWING A DINGHY SAFELY : There are some compelling reasons for knowing not only the laws, but the reasons which indicate the need for towed vehicle braking systems. Here's what you really need to know on the subject.

Motorhome Review Online yourself whenever there are dramatic safety claims regarding any rv or rv product. Handlingas well as motorhome safety is a complex subject, worthy of careful http://www.motorhomereviewonline.com/dangerous_at_speed.html
Extractions: Dangerous At Any Speed, Bet Me! Last week a reader E-mailed us the following question. I recently drove the small Safari Trek and really liked the unit. However, when I checked the 2001 RV review book this unit was termed dangerous on any road at any speed! The unit is 26-10 long with the Workhouse 158.5 wheelbase. The 2002 model has the wide chassis but same wheelbase supposedly 6 inches wider than last year. Do you suppose it is really dangerous and could the wide body chassis help? This question brought to mind a recent article in the August 13th issue of Sports Illustrated (The Height Report), which discussed the value of height in major league pitchers. According to the article, a number of major league teams have advised scouts not to waste time evaluating pitchers who are less than 6' 2" in height. The article then went on to examine the actual relationship between won-loss records and height in major league pitchers, finding not surprisingly that height did not appear to predict won-lost records. Why talk about rating baseball pitchers in a motorhome E-zine? Both rating the potential of a baseball pitcher based on height and the handling of a motorhome based on its wheelbase to length ratio have a great deal in common. First of all, each method of rating attempts to predict a complex behavior based on a single variable. Secondly, neither rating schema accurately predicts performance. In the baseball example, pitchers less than 6' 2" in height proved to do quite well in the statistics. Likewise, in a past study we found no correlation between the larger "ratios" and owners' ratings of handling in the surveys sent to our site.
Safety safety. Driving a motorhome, how safe is it? state of Virginia Department of Transportationemailed us, in 1997 there were no occupants killed in 112 rv crashes http://www.motorhomereviewonline.com/safety.htm
Extractions: M otorhome R eview O nline com Safety Driving a motorhome, how safe is it? Our contention has always been, if you want to know how dangerous something is, check the liability rate on your insurance premium. As our motorcoach has the cheapest liability rate of any vehicle in the stable, we decided to test the validity of our hypothesis. Our first e-mail was to our sister states website. In response to our initial query, the state of Virginia Department of Transportation e-mailed us, in 1997 there were no occupants killed in 112 RV crashes. There were two deaths in secondary vehicles other than the RV. Thirty-two personal injuries were reported. There were nearly 15,000 RVs registered in the state. The likelihood of being involved in a crash was less than one in one hundred. Given that some consumers hold to the notion that motorhomes are inherently dangerous, we thought there might be something we didnt know. Perhaps we had looked at the data from a particularly safe state. We thus expanded our search and e-mailed for the national fatality statistics on motorhomes and received " our office can provide you with the number of motorhomes involved in fatal crashes (Fatality Analysis Reporting System)." In 1997 there were 90 motorhomes and truck campers involved in fatal crashes. This is out of 57,060 total vehicles involved in fatal crashes! In the motorhome crashes, 38 occupants were killed. These 38 deaths were out of a total of 102,197 vehicle fatalities. There were 216 deaths attributed to crashes in which motorhomes were involved (data is from 1997 and is the most recent available).

Extractions: We're driving down the highway in the southeast, where many an RV dealership can be seen right from the road, and on the way south noticed an extensive stretch of RVs and trailer stock that caught our eye. Not enough time to check it out on our way down, we kept an eye out on the trip north, found the exit, and followed our instinct to the service road where the RV/Trailer dealer was located. Closed at the time we arrived, we took a few moments to look over their inventory that was visible on the front lot. Wow. What we saw were what might be called 'professional' RVs - these utilitarian trailers in the form of Class A motorhomes were slick and sleek, looking ready for those who want to do business in or with an RV. By professional, what we mean is that there's nothing 'homey' about them. If you like the chrome well polished, and a tough ready to haul chassis, these are definitely worth a look. The exteriors were solid white, allowing for commercialized graphics to be easily applied. The trim is diamond plate chrome. The power plant on these units in the lot ranged from an International Harvestor, to Kenworth and a Chevrolet. Upon further investigation these units can be delivered in several configurations; all built to meet the most strenuous needs of RV haulers on the roads. The Renegade units are configured as a complete motorhome up to 28 feet, or in a range of setups that allow for the 'TotorHome' option so that an additional full size trailer can be towed behind the RV unit. Quite impressive, it's an RV that fits the need of the mobile workplace that's burgeoning today. We hope to configure one that will allow for mobile office travel along with a portable video editing studio. The combination of strength, and streamline stylings makes this an obvious choice for those RVers who 'mean business'!
