Family heritage determines a persons social status and place they would live. Each person is part of several large clans, where bloodlines are kept regularly. Most families live in fertile soil areas with their clan, which is known as rugos. In these rugos there are smaller houses surrounding the main families house. When the families grow new houses are built. These houses are built in traditional beehive shape that are made from thatch, which is covered with a mixture of clay and cattle dung to keep it strong and insulated. All the houses are surrounded by a big fence, that keeps the livestock out of the houses. Outside the fence is used for raising livestock and farming. Almost every family member helps with planting, harvesting and raising livestock. In a family there are the usual father, mother and children. IN the past you could marry more than one wife but that is now outlawed. There is often extended family such as a grandparent, aunt or uncle. Family is very important to these people, almost no one lives alone. A widow or orphan is taken right away into a different family. The father is the head of the family in Rwanda, everyone has to obey him. The mother often has the responsibility to raise the children, They often have 10 or more. The mother and child stay together until the child is about two. Most children are breast feed until the are three or four years old, or until the mother is pregnant again. As children, the girls learn how to do the household chores, and the boys learn how to farm and take care of the livestock. Just after birth the child is taught the rules, myths, rituals, and traditions of the family.

    Extractions: Summary This report documents 5 years of involvement in aquacultural development in the Republic of Rwanda by Auburn University's International Center for Aquaculture. From May 1983 through February 1988 the Center provided technical assistance to the Rwanda National Fish Culture Project (PPN) which was jointly funded by the Government of Rwanda and USAID. PPN has demonstrated conclusively that fish culture in higher, cooler altitudes with limited inputs is technically sound, economically feasible, and socially acceptable. Few aquacultural development efforts on the African Continent have had similar success. Earlier aquacultural projects did not develop production systems appropriate to Rwandan climate and needs. In 1982, several thousand private fishponds were in operation, as well as numerous government facilities. However, there were few trained technicians, little functional infrastructure, and no agreement on an effective technological package appropriate for Rwandan conditions. Pressure on limited agricultural resources demanded that this situation be improved. The goal of the PPN was to develop profitable fish culture activities. Project initiatives included training personnel, improving infrastructure and facilities, developing an appropriate technological package, and strengthening the extension program to deliver the technology to farmers.

Consisting of only [10,169] square miles,...smaller than the state of Maryland, Rwanda contains 7.5 million people (1991)...Rwanda, known as the 'Little Switzerland of Africa,' is also one of the world's five poorest countries, with about 95% of the population barely managing to survive on small farm lots called shambas, of about two and one half acres each. Terracing techniques are relied upon to utilize nearly all of the available land for cultivation. However, even with such stringent escarpment devices, the population is living above the carrying capacity of the terrain. Each year another 23,000 families will need new land plots to grow their food and support their livestock. (Fossey, 1983) Rwanda's population density, which is the highest in sub-Saharan Africa, is 332 people per square kilometer (128 people per square mile). Besides the capital of Kigali, few urban centers exist in this countrymost families live in self-contained compounds. Since independence from Belgium, Rwanda's GDP has grown almost 6% per year. This has been offset, however, by the country's rapidly growing population. Consequently, annual per capita income is approximately $200.

In 1928, a severe famine occurred in central and western Rwanda. Over 300,000 people died, and another 100,000 migrated out of the country. In 1943-44, severe drought caused crop failure and another major famine, in which another 300,000 people died or migrated. Variations in annual rainfall and temperature make life for the subsistence farmer precarious. Individual family farms around the Virungas are typically a few acres in size, but the fields are not adjacent. Individual fields and pastures are often located in pieces a few miles apart in different geographic settings: on high hills, low hills, and valley floors. The purpose is to plant crops in as many different types of sites as possible, so that if a frost or dry spell destroys crops in one field, perhaps crops in the other fields some distance away will survive. The fragmenting of farms makes machines, such as tractors, difficult to use (aside from their cost). Individual fields are also too small to use these machines effectively. Consequently, western-type modernizations of farms for increasing yield are impractical, as well as not affordable, in Rwanda.

    Extractions: Propagation of Potato through Tissue Culture Although the market potential for potato is very promising in Rwanda, there are numerous constraints to its production. Among the major constraints is the presence of pests and diseases such as late blight, bacterial wilt and leaf-roll. Other problems are decreasing soil fertility and the lack of certified or clean potato seed. Potatoes are cultivated mainly in the Congo-Nile crest, the highlands of Buberuka and the volcanic regions. There are 25,000 hectares under potato with an annual average yield of about 9 tonnes per hectare. Production is generally characterised by smallholder farming under intensive, and at times mixed, cropping systems. The average farm size is one hectare. Tissue culture has been used to check the threat of potato viruses. Since its establishment, the National Potato Research Programme (PNAP) has been involved in research to meet the increasing demand of ware and seed potatoes. During the past decade, efforts have been made to develop new varieties with resistance or tolerance to the most common potato diseases. An Essential Requirement Although progress on late blight and bacterial wilt management has been made through collaboration with the regional potato and sweet potato improvement network (PRAPACE) and the Centro Internacional de la Papa (CIP), little research work has been undertaken on potato viruses.
