unless you are complete beginner in ham radio world, this book is definetly not for you.

Disapointing
This book was written for and continually refers to it's illustrations and figures.
Because they were removed, reading this book is not worthwhile.
Recommend removal from Kindle.

good if you are new to the hobby
This book provides a lot of information.If you are new to the hobby this is great book to have in the shack.If you have been into ham radio for more than a year most of this information will be old, you should already have this information in other books.The chapters on emergency communications and traffic handling are pretty much a waste, if a major disaster happened the last thing I would be thinking about is radio.It seems like a good portion of the book is the standard league propoganda on how they what activities to occur on the air. Easy to get lost in the book
If you are a beginner, if you are looking to learn fresh about the subject of Antennas, I don't recommend this book for you. You will be miserably lost. As with other ARRL publications that I own, it's a collection of enormous amount of information that are semi-random in nature, discoherent, and non-contextual. It's written by too many authors to be understood in a progression commonly found in textbooks. So, this is not a textbook. It won't take you from A-Z. Instead there will be things talked about in Chapter 4 that are defined in Chapter 25. Things that referenced over and over are not even defined anywhere.

Try looking for SWR, S-meter, Antenna Tuner, etc. You will find them scattered allover the book without any proper introductory information. I totally not recommend this book unless you have 2 or more years of experience in Radio and strong theoretical knowledge. Not that there's much theory in the book, but they assume you know the basics.

ARRL Antenna Book
If you are a ham radio operator or a SWL (short wave listener) then YOU NEED this book! This is the bible of antennas. Excellent material; well illustrated; and easy to understand. A must have.

Very informative - but very technical!
This is an "OK" reference for those looking for information on a variety of antenna's and applications.Having said that, it is way too technical.If one is looking for "how to construct" information, they would be better served looking at other publications that provide a more simplified approach.Most readers will be overwhelmed.I was looking more for practical construction guidance.

Ultimate Practical Antenna Reference Book
I am impressed! Safety is not the last chapter, it's the first chapter! It is a full 24 pages in length and includes topics such as: tower support safety, safety belt and climbing accessories, gin pole use, installing antenna on towers, tower climbing safety tips, lockout/tagout, installation of tower shields, electrical safety, NEC, grounding, lightning, AC power lines, feedline protection, rotator use, mobile antenna installation, transient protection, RF radiation/EM field safety, and safe RF exposure limits. Not a bad way to start a practical book on designing, installing, securing, and operating RF transmit/receive antennas.

I have taken electrical engineering courses on antenna analysis and design. Good courses. Although I learned how to analyze antenna performance and model their patterns, I still didn't feel I could design a practical high-performance antenna system yet. That is where amateur radio and earlier editions of this 976-page practical design and construction antenna book came to the rescue. Looking back, I believe it also made a difference in my first five years as a young electrical engineer developing and testing side-looking airborne radars (SLAR) based on phased arrays.

So, what makes this antenna book the one to own?

Coverage: Extensive practical design and performance material on all the popular antenna systems and many unconventional antennas. For most antenna types, design topics include system variables (e.g., number of elements, spacing, matching network), performance vs. frequency, multi-band configurations, stacked arrays, real-world terrain effects, and alternate configurations. Throughout the book are numerous photos of hardware, diagrams, schematics, and performance plots. There are chapters on the design and construction of high-performance yagi antenna: 432 MHz (70 cm band) with 22-elements and 144 MHz (2 m) design supporting 10 to 19 elements. Circular polarized antenna design to establish links to LEO and elliptical orbit amateur satellites are covered. There are chapters on material selection for antennas, towers, and supports. There is an extensive chapter on atmospheric effects on radio wave propagation. There is even a short chapter on HF antenna systems for sailboats!

Reference material: Nearly every chapter includes an extensive bibliography that includes papers from CQ, QST, Antenna Engineering Handbook, RF Design, Proceedings of the IEE, IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, and the Radio Handbook. At the end of Chapter 2, there is an extensive list of textbooks on antennas (including the ones from my college courses).

PDF: The CD ROM that is included contains a fully searchable PDF of this book. Nice bonus feature.

This is a first-class reference book on the design of RF antenna systems!

I cannot imagine an antenna subject on earth that is not covered here.As a fairly new ham with a General license, this book is a bit like taking a drink out of a firehose.It might be wise for the new ham to start with something a bit more basic.However, this appears to be the Bible for those wanting total coverage of the subject. ... License Manual, Amatuer Extra Class
Excellent manual for study for the Amateur Extra class ham radio license. It is very technical and is written for the ham radio operator that has passed his General class license and wants to advance him or herself to the next license and its operating privileges. I would highly recommend this study manual.

Adequate, but not Great
As has already been stated by others, this book tries to do the near impossible. It makes assumptions as to your proficiency in electronics and math. I successfully used this book to attain an Amateur Extra license. I would read the entire book ONE time, then mark all of the correct answers in the question pool. Read, re-read, and then read the questions OVER AND OVER until you are able to average 80% proficiency on the QRZ practice tests. It can be done! 73

Take the Amateur Extra class license exam with confidence
The steps to upgrade to Amateur Extra class license are achievable and worth the time investment. If you want to take the exam with confidence, then using this well-written book as your study guide will help do that.

First, some info about the Element 4 exam to upgrade from General to Extra class. The exam consists of 50 multiple choice questions that are selected from the officially released pool (effectivity July 2008) of over 738 questions (with answer key). At least 37 questions must be answered correctly to pass. The exam is administered by a team of volunteer examiners who are themselves Amateur Extra Class radio operators.

So, what makes this book the study guide to own?

The chapters are organized by topics that align with the sub-elements in the exam and provide the much needed technical context and background for all the questions. At this licensing level, the numerous schematics, diagrams and plots help significantly with the learning. Learning the technical topics for Amateur Extra requires much more math skills, electronics background and technical RF knowledge than General class. Nearly 3/4 of the study guide is devoted to this technical context and background material that promotes understanding and minimizes memorization.

The last 1/4 of this study guide lists the entire Element 4 question pool of 738 questions, also organized by sub-element. I was able to work off each chapter and its related questions one sub-element at a time during my spare time over the course of about six weeks.

This is the book (previous edition) I used to study and pass the Amateur Extra Class license exam. I didn't need to use any other books, CDs, or online practice quizzes. As such, I definitely recommend this study guide.

very helpful....... but


This is probably the best study guide you can find. I gave four stars instead of five
because I thought the explanation to some of the math problems could have been
a little more clear. To understand the math I used a book called "Circuit Concepts" by
Thomas Kubala. I wanted to learn the material and not just memorize, and the ARRL manual
was really a great help. I passed on the first try with a 96%.

Beware however, unless you have a background in radio you're probably going to have to
put in some time if you want to do well on the exam. I studied at least one or two hours a day for
several weeks. I also used several of the practice exams and paid close attention to the
answers I got wrong. If you're prepared, then the exam isn't really too difficult, but you have
to know the material. Good Luck!

Out of Date
This5th edition, while the text contains good information, is virtually worthless as a prep for the Tecnician Class license exam. The pool of exam questions in this edition is only valid through June 30, 2007, making it useless as prep for a current exam. The current pool, valid through June 30, 2010, is significantly different from the 2007 pool. This could lead one to fail the exam and not get a license. Seller should highlight that this is not the most current issue. Fortunately, I had other materials and did prepare for the exam using the current pool of questions.

Now You're Talking! All You Need to Get Your First Amateur Radio License, Fifth Edition
Good book, information described clearly, not too complicated. It is the latest edition (Fifth). I knew Technician Class did not require code, but expected it to be in the book, and it was not. Operating a code station was covered, but not learning code itself. I was billed properly and the book arrived earlier than I had expected.

Hame radio
This is an updated exam book for preparation for the Ham RadioTest. I was able to purchase a used copy through Amazon Marketplace and it was in excellent condition.

Excellent For Your First Liscence
This book is the best beginning book for people wanting to get there Ham Radio license. It has graphs and pictures, tables and charts that help you learn as you go so that you understand basic Ham Radio skills. It is easy to read and great for the young reader as well.

If you use this book, and take the practice tests online until your passing them fairly consistently, you will have a very high probability of passing your test.

Best way to study is to work with the book about 1/2 hour a day, no more.

Take your time, then take online practice tests each day until your test date.

Good book, but a little outdated!
I really enjoyed this book, but Amateur Radio has changed lots since 2001!

Biggest change?The FCC does not require morse code at all, for any license class, not even Amateur Extra Class! More priviledges have also been granted to lower class licensees, neither of which are covered in the 2001 edition I purchased!

Still a great book if you can get it at a good price!

Disappointing
To challenge myself, I decided to study in order to take the Technician amateur radio operating license exam.I picked up this book, which bills itself as a complete source of information.Not so.

Despite the fact that the book is in its 4th edition, it is poorly edited.Information jumps from basic to full jargon in the same paragraph, without any definition of the new terms used.Much of the information on the basics of electric circuits and electronics seems to be pulled from an electronics text.

I'm an engineer, but not an electrical engineer.It's been years since I studied electric circuits and this book did little to refresh my memory.The information on FCC regs is sparse -- the complete Part 97 is not included.The question pool for the multiple choice Tech exam is included, but only the letter answers are provided without any explanation of the answers (leaving the reader to try to find the information in the rest of the book).

I'll look to another source to help prepare for the exam.

Excellent tool to prepare for exam or just to review often as a refresher.Very informative!

Better than the Handbook
While the Handbook is a tome of technical goodness... the Operators Manual is a much more enjoyable read for the average hamThis book really helps you understand a lot of the different parts of the hobby.I'd probably buy a new one every 5 - 10 years.

Valuable information for new and old hams
Are you new to ham radio? This is the best book to learn about the many things you can do in the hobby. Even old hams will learn a thing or two.

Not sure it was worth the money
I purchased this book to obtain a Technician class HAM license.I spent a decent amount of time reading the entire manual front to back, including a review of the glossary before I began taking the practice tests.I became very discouraged and frustrated when I began failing nearly every practice exam I took.It didn't take long for me to realize that many of the terms and other material on the test were never mentioned in the book, or mentioned in a figure/side note that would not have an index entry.At this point it became a task of memorizing the answers or looking for the information online at HAM specific forums and sites.It is an easy read and as another reviewer commented, there is a good amount of fluff that has nothing to do with what is actually tested.If I had to do it again, I would just use the free resources on the internet.I did pass my exam only missing 1 question but I do not attribute my success to this book.

Check the price!
This book is great; I've read it cover to cover, and am going to take the Technician test in a few weeks.After reading the book, I've taken the Technician test online, and haven't gotten worse than 80%.

Check the cover price, though, before ordering.I bought a used book, for $25.40, and the cover price is $24.95! Why pay more for a used book?

I give the book an easy 4 stars; it is pretty well written, with test questions in the back.I have to take away at least one star though for the price.

This edition is out of date!!!!!
It now is September 3, 2010. This edition of the ARRL Ham Radio License Manual is out of date.It has been out of date since July 1, 2010 when "Edition 2" of the license manual went into effect.

Why the big concern since electron flow hasn't changed?

Because anyone studying for their entry-level amateur radio license will have access to the OBSOLETE QUESTION POOL, which is the last section of the manual. It consists of HUNDREDS of questions, from which 35 are selected for the FCC license test.

Unless you have some historic reason for wanting an obsolete study guide with the outdated question pool, I see no reason to purchase this book.

The Edition 2 of the ARRL Manual, effective July 1, 2010 carries a list price of $24.95, a huge amount less than what the listed Amazon prices are.

George Bernard Shaw (26 July 1856 - 2 November 1950) was a world-famous Irish playwright. Born in Dublin, he moved to London at the age of twenty and lived in England for the remainder of his life. Good Reprint of a Minor Classic
This is a very nicely produced republication of the 1922 Collins (no, not THAT Collins) Radio Amateur's Hand Book (no, not THAT Handbook).The original text was scanned and printed in a good modern font.The figures, however, were not redrawn, so they are a little fuzzy.

Forgotten Books makes this book available on-line for free browsing (but not downloading), or you can buy the hardcopy from Amazon.I recommend the hardcopy for easy reading.(Numerous other versions are available on-line, but many do not contain the illustrations, which are critical in this book.)

After publication of the 1922 revision, there was a review in QST that took the author to task for presenting various obsolete circuits and techniques, even by 1923 standards.For us in 2009, however, it is fascinating to read the details about how to construct spark gap and vacuum tube (CW) transmitters and their corresponding receivers, even though the historical progression is not thoroughly explained.
