Reveiw by a new ham.
As a new ham (I ordered this just before taking my general exam earlier this year) that lives in a development that won;t allow visible antenna I fount this book very helpful.It had a lot of good ideas in it, a few of which I was able to use fairly easily.I think it serves as a good starting place, and it sent me down different paths of inquiry wanting more information.

Informative and entertaining book on being stealth
This is a delicious book by Al Brogdon, W1AB, with ideas, suggestions and great stories about how to operate your radio in those locations with restrictions -- like apartment complexes, condos and many residential areas.

I am myself a new ham (less than a year) and I live in an apartment with tight rules; so I had _everything_ to learn from this book.Before I bought it, I was somewhat discouraged and clueless about how to start. After I read it, I realized that I could, and should, go ahead and have my ham station.

This is an enjoyable and easy-to-read text, with 162 pages. And it is well divided in 20 chapters and 9 appendixes, with many photographs and diagrams; it is practical, straightforward and, most important, written in a very entertaining language, with many stories,anecdotes and personal (and funny) situations.

Another reviewer said that the Appendixes are reprinted articles. But I did not have access to the QST or ARRL Magazines before, and I never had read those articles before. So, the book was 100% new to me, and I was interested in every bit from cover to cover.

Thanks to ideas and suggestions that I read in this book, I installed my own variation: an apartment station with (conveniently placed) vertical antennas in the balcony, without bothering anyone. I don't operate when there is an important game on TV, because I don't risk producing TVI. I respect power limits and operate responsibly. OK, this is not a powerful station since I don't have a beam tower or a long wire.But it is enough for enjoying radio, HF, some occasional DX (even in this solar minimum) -- while also having peace with the XYL (wife).

Above all, this is a very positive book, that shows that it is possible to be creative in restricted spaces, and have a lot of fun.

Reprints of old articles, meh.
This poor quality book is printed on flimsy paper, and has flimsy content as well. It is a collection of magazine articles, and the material is covered much better by Kirk A. Kleinschmidt, NT0Z, in his book, Stealth Amateur Radio. Save your money. ... Read more

Awesome intro to theory behind RF!!
I'm just beginning to get into Amateur Radio (ie: Ham radio) to move my career more toward RF technology.This book really lays out the info very gently, doesn't try to impress you with huge words or complex theorems.For anyone trying to gain insight into RF, this is a GREAT starting point.But, if you're trying to get into Ham radio, get the test book first from the ARRL and pass the Technician's exam.After that, you can apply practically all the theory found in this book and expand your knowledge further through experience.

Perfect for Beginners & Non-techies
This book was definitely written for non-technical people.In order to enjoy this book, one does not have to have great knowledge in electronics and mathematics.As matter of fact, the author completely avoids using mathematical equations and replace it with very easy-to-follow graphs to explain the complex "Radiophysics".The author did a very good job of explaining difficult topics of "Radiophysics" using normal everyday language. I was given this fantastic book by my neighbor and friend here in New Jersey, who is a longtime Ham Radio afficionado (and Police Officer by occupation).Truth be told, I have always wondered about Jim's (my mentioned neighbor/friend) hobby/pastime, especially given his tower and antenna systems, which are large and visible and hard to ignore!I did not know much about the hobby, other than 'people talk around the world much like CB'ers talk locally'.I now realize how utterly wonderful, fascinating and riveting this hobby is!Not to mention critical in times of regional or national emergencies! Passed...
Used this to pass the ARRL General exam a month after getting my Technician license.After a friend of mine showed me a lot of the stuff I'd only read about in the Technician book...made the information in the General book much easier to understand.

After only a week & 1/2...passed the exam with only missing 5 questions.Not the score I wanted...but a pass is a pass.

Unlike the Gordon West books which just lists the questions & answers to allow you to pass the exam...these set of books do that...but also explain the reason why.The answers are nice...but I want to know the reason why.The ARRL books give you this information & much more.

Stop your search for a great resource in ham radio testing
I am nearly through the manual, and find it challenging but doable. I do not have a background in electrical engineering or radio, but am preparing for the General License Exam. The text is informative, provides many good examples, diagrams, authentic forms, and uses follow up questions to check understanding. After going through the chapters, I feel more prepared to test for basic electricity, radio theory, practical circuits, and antennas. If you put in your time to study and use this book, you should feel secure in earning your Element 3 license. The price is reasonable and the publisher is the absolute best source for the book's content. I just purchased another book titled, Ham Radio for Dummies. This too is available on amazon.com. Become a "Trained Seal"
The emphasis of this book is on "knowing the questions" and the "right" answer rather than understanding what you are supposedly learning. There are much better exam preparation books out there; Gordon West does a much better job presenting the material and the test questions than this book. From the preface: "It [this book] is only intended to help you pass the exam with a minimum investment in time. The reader is strongly encouraged to use the book from the ARRL to better understand the subject." You'll learn the correct answer to the multiple guess questions, but you will not LEARN the material. By the way, a new question pool is due in 2011.

Very good for passing the test.
Have you already read the ARRL General Class book (The ARRL General Class License Manual for Ham Radio, Level 2)and feel a little bit overwhelmed? Then you can get this book to help you focus on getting the correct answers on the test. This book is no substitute for the more comprehensive books on the market, but if you do what the book says you will pass the test with minimal effort. The approach of only having the correct answers definitely makes it easy to recognize the correct answers on the real test, since you have not seen the wrong answer choices. I believe MFJ has a similar product that cost more. You will not have any use for the book once you pass the test, but it a very cheap book that does what it claims.

Excellent and inexpensive final review before the exam., but must be used with other more comprehensive books.
If you want to upgrade to general, you should first get the ARRL book( The ARRL General Class License Manual for Ham Radio, Level 2) and go through as much of that book as you can. In the last few days before the exam go through the questions in this book three times. You can do this very quickly. Since the distracter incorrect answer options have been removed from the questions, you will be more likely to remember the correct answer during the exam. If you study from the original pool with all of the answer choices, you run a bigger risk of picking one of the wrong answer choices. If you want explanations to all the questions , there are other books that you can use:General Class FCC License Preparation for Element 3 General Class Theory and ARRL's General Q & A: Upgrade to a General Class Ham Radio License! This book is a very inexpensive supplement to the ARRL book. The study time you save is worth the few bucks that this book costs.Use the ARRL book to learn and understand the concepts. Use this book for the final review before the exam.

Disappointing book
I shouldn't have been surprised, but I was. The content of the book is exactly the text of each question in the current cohort of questions for the General class ham license with only the correct answers given. There is no discussion of any question, and the absence of the incorrect answers made it impossible for me to evaluate whether questions would have tricky (i.e., very plausible, but incorrect) answers, ridiculous answers, or some combination of the three. I wouldn't recommend this book as a study guide at all. It might serve reasonably well as a grading guide for a volunteer examiner, but the FCC already provides that information for examiners. ... Just another book.
I have gathered several books to increase my knowledge level about Ham Radio. This is a very readable book and you can enjoy every page. However, it is a broad coverage and not that exceptional. It will add to your knowledge base. If you just want to pass the test, pick ARRL study guide level two.

For Those Interested in Amateur Radio
This guide provides a fascinating overview of Amateur (Ham) Radio from how to get a Ham Radio license to a wide range of information on Amateur Radio communications to some basic electronics projects for your Ham Shack.

"Ham Radio Operator's Guide" starts off with an overview of the Ham License Classes, including the spectrum's and modes each license is allowed to operate on. Unfortunately, despite being published only last year, the Federal Communications Commission changed the number and types of Amateur Radio licenses for the United States. Regardless, the advice about how to study for and take the examinations is still valid.

The book continues with a discussion of all of the things you can do with a Amateur Radio License. The author covers the basic characteristics of the various frequency bands and modes of transmission that Hams use. He also discusses the basic electronics equipment required to communicate and operate a radio shack, from transmitters and receivers to microphones and power supplies.

The "Ham Radio Operator's Guide" describes many of the activities that Ham Radio Clubs conduct, from swap meets and field days to fox hunts and educational efforts. In addition to discussing why all Amateur Radio operators should join their local Ham Radio Club, the author comments on Ham traditions, conventions and etiquette.

Finally, the book wraps up with eight simple electronics contruction projects for useful items from a field strength meter and radio frequency relay to four different types of antennas.

After a successful career as a photojournalist, the author, Carl Bergquist, KG4AIC, has turned to his lifelong hobby of electronics and writes articles for Popular Electronics and Electronics Now. He wrote "Ham Radio Operator's Guide" from the perspective of a new potential radio amateur. His writing style is very entertaining, keeping what could be dry, technical topics fresh and interesting.

I strongly recommend this book for anyone who thinks they might be interested in becoming an Amateur Radio operator or in learning what being a Ham is like.

The definitive guide for anybody interested in radio's technical foundations
I don't work in the radio industry although have had a life-long fascination with the topic. If you've ever wondered how radio works, and I mean truly works from a technical perspective, this book is required reading. It is simply massive in scope, covering topics such as electronic theory fundamentals, antenna design, electronic component design, and much, much, much more.

Apparently a new edition of this book is revised and released annually, and it shows. The quality of writing and attention to detail is obvious from the first page.

Highly recommended, and I'd imagine an indispensable resource for anybody interested in making a career or hobby out of radio.

2010 ARRL Handbook
This is the first edition I bought since the 1975 editon. It is a great update to that old one with the both of best worlds a CD edition for almost instant reference and a print edition for study.

The purchase of the my ARRL 2010 Handbook which is known as the Amateur's bible of radio was one of my latest best book purchases and an update to the much earlier one that I possess. Great Starter Book
This book is a great place to start if you want to get into amateur radio and take it along on your boat. Easy to read and enough to get you going with a great hobby.Item was received in just a few days - great shipping.

Introductory with very little useful information for the average mariner interested in Amateur Radio aboard your boat.
Marine Amateur Radio purports to be a text on selection, installation, licensing, and use; but fails to provide more than cursory, introductory information on selection and the most important installation and antenna selection phase. The very brief section on antennas for HF (high frequency) communications could have filled 25 pages leaving the mariner with lots of choices and alternatives, but in fact was introduced and finished 4 pages later. Buy this book if you know absolutely nothing about Amateur Radio and want lots of history, licensing, and non-marine related amateur radio activities, but do not buy it for strategies and tactics to select equipment and build or buy antennas for your vessel. Buy it if you are interested in knowing about amateur radio (ham radio) and some of its uses.

Use primary sources
Another book that is simply not worth the purchase price.There is no new information here, just a brief glance through general information about ham radio.Very little information about radio on boats and no specific information about selecting, installing, and operating a ham radio on a boat.I hoped that this would be a good book.

this book is the old edition which the website "forgot" to mention. That being said, it was as discribed with the cd. I didn't use it. I went to the ARRL website and purchased the current book.

Excellent book, but don't get it.
This is a very good book, I found it easy to read and the way it goes over the questions and explains the answers was very helpful. However, this version of the book is now obsolete, the test questions have changed so get the newer version of the book.

Even I can geta Technician Class License
After skimming through this book and spending a little time on the questions, it is easily believable that even I, a very senior citizen, though not a good speller, can qualify for a technician class license. It was even fun to read the questions and then try to choose the best answer. 4 out of 5 thumbs up - oh - I mean "Stars".

This book was excellent. It was right to the point! Using this as a study guide, I got an 88% on the test!

beginner Ham
As,someone who was looking into getting his beginner (technician class) Ham license this book worked very well. The provided CD was no use as a study guide but only an introduction to the world of Ham radio. The study questions in the book are almost word for word those that you will find on the test. It is a great compliment to some of the free practice material he mentions in the book over all I give it 4 stars because of the CD and the book does not do a great job of teaching the why of Ham radio but instead it teaches How to take the test. ...
