5-0 out of 5 stars This book has everything.
This book has all the information you need to find where the various shortwave stations are located and what will be on at different times. I am happy I got it to go along with the shortwave radio that I purchased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Passport to the world
This is one of the books I included in the present I bought for my 20-year-old grandson along with the Sony Broadband radio. This book is interesting and opening the world of broadband radio to my grandson. He finds it very useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very full of information but ...
.. also full of confusing graphical pages so you can not resolve what is the comercial and what article!

Once again the graphical arrangement of comercial, articles, content for example which you can not find quickly and the the rest of the book is not in accordance with the technical content of the book!

After some time of digging you can find everything what you need but again: it is very confusing book becuse of the similar colours of the comercials and articles!
For stars because of that!

It is more accurate for local frequecies than WRTH!

Enjoy anyway!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I Bought It 20 Years Ago!
I recently bought a copy of this out-of-print shortwave radio handbook, and though I've been a listener for over 25 years, there is a lot of information about the hobby that I can really use here.

If you're new to shortwave radio, the chapters on propogation and receivers will naturally be helpful, but there's much more here than the basics. From identifying languages to obtaining QSLs from stations large and small to how to arrange your listening post, everything that a SWL or DXer needs to know is discussed.

There are a few things outdated (it was published in 1986, after all), like the Russian Woodpecker Radar System.Still, if you have a shortwave receiver and really want to get the most out of it, find a copy from a used bookseller and learn from the experts! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a great book for both beginner and experienced Amateur Radio Operators. This book has more information than the previous books and has a lot more projects. The Arrl Handbook for Radio Amateurs 2002 truly upholds its reputation as "The Bible" for Amateur Radio Operators.

5-0 out of 5 stars Newest Version
This is the best ever issue of the annual ARRL Handbook. With more projects to complete at home than in many years.DSP is also covered in more depth than ever.Get up to date on the latest, keep fresh on the past, and have fun with amateur radio with your new 2002 ARRL Handbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard in Applied Electronics & Communications
It takes almost 1,200 pages to cover thirty (30) chapters of diverse information. These chapters are logically grouped as Fundamental Theory, Construction Techniques, Practical Design and Projects, and OperatingPractices.I previously used a hardback copy of the 1988 printing of thistext, and the 2000 edition is properly updated to make it an outstandingreplacement. If you are interested in radio wave propagation, antennas, building electronic equipment or the amateur radio hobby itself, this isone reference you shouldn't be without.Compares favorably withprofessional publications at several times the cost.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy Handbook to Have for Hobby and Work
The book is a must for everyone who is interested in radio circuits and more. The first time I heard of it was many years ago when I was approaching the world of radiohams; since then it's been my reference manytimes and I often found it sitting on other people's desk at work as aquick and reliable reference. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars William Orr...the legend lives on
I own several hard cover texts of Bill Orr.He documented and wrote many fine articles for QST, CQ Magzine, and 73, over the years.Bill had a way of going into depth when explaining technical concepts and construction methodology that many have found refreshing and enlightening.

Being "construction minded," I often repair older radio equipment or tackle a "scratch build" project and use Bill's handbooks as references.Over the years I have acquired several of his hard bound publications. This one, in particular, I needed for tube specifications I could not find elsewhere for a tube amplifier project.

While the 22nd and 23rd edition are very similar in content, if one wanted to own just a single copy, the 23rd should be the one of choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars RADIO HANDBOOK
One of the very greats of Radio literature ..... Sadly the AUTHOR now no longer with us. These books now priceless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice collection
If you missed out on the technology prior to 1970s because you were born after that, this book really helps you catch up.

There are quite a no. of errors in the formula and schematics, by and large can be ignored if you are looking for a general understanding on the subject and not an indepth product design / engineering knowledge.

Especially, the High Power RF amplifier design & construction and the Antenna chapters are very interesting and useful, I consider these are truely Bill Orr's home turf.

I have almost all the editions of this book and I find the last edition to bea real good value for money compared to most of the ARRL Handbooks
published after 1994.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fine book written by the Legendery Bill
I have with me, a huge collection of Technical Books on the topics of Wireless and Radio Communications on both professional as well as Amateur Radio Fronts. On the Ham Radio side, I found the ARRL and RSGB books especially the Handbooks have been retaining the same old contents with the cover page modified every year. I realized,I was wasting my precious money and efforts buying these year after year, till I started buying the Radio Handbooks written by Bill Orr. Though most of the stuff in Bill's Handbook seem a bit out dated from the Professional point of view, for most of the Hobbyists and Hams who do not care about the state of the art, or for beginers and budding engineers who want to get their basics right, I must say it is really the best. In every edition, I find the construction projects and the Antenna projects not only comprehensive but also exciting to read and build. Lastly, having worked with Eimac for so long, Bill's command over the subject is well demonstrated in the chapters pertaining to Vacuum Tube basics and High Power Tube Amplifier Construction.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're looking for a new copy...
...PrimeParts.net says they still have a few in stock; I just ordered one earlier today.Web link: http://www.primeparts.net/Books/books.shtml

Update: The book arrived and I've been perusing the contents. It's an absolutely beautiful book -- the pictures are crisp and clear. The technical content is quite good, although I would caution that the technical details are closer to what you find in something like the ARRL Handbook or perhaps Experimental Methods in RF Design than, say, Bowick's or Hayward's RF Design (text) books.

It is true that some of the content is dated: most of the amplifiers are tube-based and while some designs are perfectly workable as presented, today there are much more straightforward approaches using, e.g., microcontrollers and a bit of analog 'glue.'(Particularly amusing: He catalogs the 'typical home computer' as having 64KB. :-) )Still, there's a lot that can be learned from a classic book such as this, and even if the implementations have changed over time, the fundamentals are timeless; people who downgrade books such as this for being 'obsolete' are typically those who are only seeking a cursory understanding of the subject matter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginner to pro SW radio enthusiast, MUST HAVE!
I have renewed my childhood hobby of radios. I messed around with it for many months and got some good advice from the web but there is nothing like a GOOD BOOK. It has equip review of radios (receive only), antennas with detailed explanation of the who, what and why. Also it explains the world of SW or HF (shortwave or High Freq) radio listening world wide. They not only have freq and schedules ** they feature some different stations. Really quite excellent.

** Schedule and Freq: If you want the latest than get the newest version of Passport. Freq's can change over time as stations move (some times). They do this for many reasons such as interference or changing atmospheric conditions. Never the less its an excellent way to get started in the world of radio.

I know SW RADIO is a little RETRO in the world of cell Phones, iPhones,iPods, Internet, WiFi Internet, satellite radio & TV and cable TV, butthere is a lot of information out there on the radio. THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THE THRILL OF GETTING A SIGNAL CLEARLY 8,000 MILES AWAY. I enjoy making my own antenna and improving it. I also work with the fairly new DRM stations transmitting digital audio over the SW freqs. Last night I was listening to Radio Cuba (in English) and it's very interesting to hear them report US news. Can you say Propaganda.

There is so much to know its daunting, but this book is great in they way they explain with out talking down to you. Even Pros that have been at it for awhile will love it. They do detailed reviews of radios, two of which I have: TenTec RX320D and the Degen DE1103.

4-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best shortwave buying guide available
The Passport to World Band Radio book series is great for honest and very crtical reviews of shortwave equipment.I bought this (2006) edition along with the WRTH book of the same year and I found the information in the Passport book to be considerably more interesting and up-to-date.

Indeed I'd say their shortwave radio reviews are almost too critical. However, I prefer their harsh reviews over other sources that seem to like everything.

Whether you decide to save a few dollars buying this older edition or choose to buy the latest "Passport"book, you can't go wrong.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shortwave Listeners can use this.
Lots of Information for Shortwave Listeners. Interesting equipment reviews and articles. Not as easy to use as the World Radio TV Handbook though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for the beginner !
I don't have alot of shortwave experience, have only really just basically tuned around the various bands, without really knowing much about the way shortwave works. This book really goes into the hows and whys of shortwave listening, and provides a great resource for the beginner!

I also really appreciated the radio reviews, since I was considering a new radio, and already had two of the radios listed. I found the reviews to be very accurate, and they helped me make an informed decision on my latest radio purchase. I also actually enjoyed the many advertisements, they also provide interesting information on radios and other products for the shortwave listener.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to listen to shortwave radio, I know it helped me out alot!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Every Year!
There is nothing like the Passport to World Band Radio. If you are interested in shortwave radio, you should get every edition as soon as it is available. ... Read more

Product Description
Growing numbers of hams are using VoIP, or Voice Over Internet Protocol, in combination with their radios for long-distance communication spanning hundreds or thousands of miles. They're using the Internet as the relay between their base stations, handhelds and mobile transceivers.

This is a guide to the four primary VoIP systems used by hams: EchoLink, IRLP, eQSO and WIRES-II. The book is designed for beginners who need information on how to set up and use these systems, but it also provides plenty of technical meat for those who want to dig deeper and explore how the systems actually work.

Contents:

Connecting The World
Using A VoIP Link
Conference Servers, Reflectors and Nets
Other Linking Systems
Setting Up Your Own Node
Digital Audio and the Internet
Under The Hood: EchoLink
Under The Hood: IRLP
Legal Issues In Linking

4-0 out of 5 stars Arrl's Voip Internet Linking for Radio Amateurs
This book was ok. It filled in some questions I had. I wish it had more info., but it was worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to EchoLink and IRLP
ARRL's VoIP: Internet Linking for Radio Amateurs is a great introduction to the various Voice over IP (VoIP) technologies used in amateur radio. The book provides a general overview of the various amateur radio VoIP technologies such as Echolink, IRLP, WIRES-II and eQSO.After a brief introduction to these different technologies the rest of the book focuses on Echolink and IRLP.The author covers the common commands used in each system and how to access Echolink and IRLP systems over the air and through the internet.I really enjoyed the technical details the author provided when explaining how Echolink and IRLP worked. The author also provided a decent amount of information regarding how to setup your own IRLP and Echolink node.

The biggest complaint I have with the book is the price.I feel its a little high given the size of the book and amount of material covered.Additionally the book only briefly mentions WIRES-II and eQSO.I would have liked to of seem more information on these systems.

Overall I enjoyed the book.If you are interested in learning about Echolink and IRLP this book provides a great introduction.

Matt

3-0 out of 5 stars Missing some newer skils and services ...
This is a good book, it covers the basics of VoIP. However since it has come out there have been some major changes. As only to be expected with computers and radios ... So I give this a 3 / 5, not the best but still good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Echolink - the ins and outs.True..........
I have seen IRLP in action and thought to myself how do I do this? So I searched everywhere and found out that Echolink was the local popular form, but apart from the echolink on-line manual couldn't find much else to help me get an angle on this.
This book has been a welcome book to help me understand all about the subject - it really gives all the resources and information needed to get going. But as always it is not only the book that's important - it is taking action that is the exciting part.
One of our local radio clubs MDRC just had a really successful meeting with standing room only on echolink and it is going to get bigger.I think this book is a good start so you can learn enough to get into it,get your feet wet and get that experience to write the next "update".Petervk4cbd

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Undestand
An easy to understand description and implementation of VoIP radio linking for both the amateur and veteran. The book covers several products available free from the Internet including one product - Echo Link -- creating by the author. If you are looking to try something new with Internet Linking or just understand how it works, this is the book to have by your side. ...
