The High Frontier: Exploring the Tropical Rainforest Canopy
Very good book! I gave it as a gift and I received very high compliments! The service was excellent, I received the book almost immediately after purchase.

solid science, unforgettable images
This is a great popular science book, written by an adventurer/explorer who also has a Harvard PhD in biology.He travels all over the world for National Geographic, taking nature photos as well as reporting on cutting-edge discoveries in the rainforests.As such, he succeeds at mixing art and science in this book, which is somewhat technical, but explained in clear language that laymen can understand.THis book changed the way Isaw rainforests:fully 9/10s of their biota are in the canopy, in the leaves high above, which you would never imagine from the ground.And Moffet went up there with camera to photograph it with some of the world's best scientists.The result is absolutely masterful.

Far fetched parallels, very general advice and religious overtones
Basically, the headline says it all. The so-called principles are basics anyone knows combined with parallels drawn to the rainforest in it's sustainability. These are in parts obvious, in parts far fetched, in parts amazing -yes, but merely because one begins to wonder about the relevance.
The religious overtones are more than distracting; you must be a believer of a certain type to follow Mr Pink. If not - don't bother buying.

Something different, but.......good !
When I bought this book I was a little skeptical on its thesis/approach, but I am pleased to report that it did achieve what management texts are meant to deliver -opening the mind to a new line of thought.

Central to the thought of the book is 'ecosystem' and in business it is definitely one of those things that more attention being paid to should hopefully pay results.

I would recommend the book for those that are 'searching' for different angles than the traditional management text.

Short on strategy and long on inspirational content
At first glance I thought this book was exactly what I was looking for.I had long ago seen the parallels of nature in the corporate world however this book goes way too in trying to make connections that simply aren't there.It would have been much better to draw conclusions from the general aspects of nature and not just the rain forest as if it is some magical place that alone can sustain ample amounts of thriving life. What about the ocean's coral reefs?The other thing that was really distracting was the strong religious overtones. If you are a Christian that is fine and dandy but he really tries to push his theology down your throat and it left a bad taste in my mouth.This really could have been a great book; along the lines of "Good to Great" but it sorely lacked the required research and made connections between nature and business that were unfortunately only in the author's mind.

Excellent Read!!
This book was very creative and extremely practical.The rainforest concept was new to me and I was surprised at the amount of insight the author had regarding the comparison of the rainforest to a perfect business model.Great book!!

Michael Q. Beautifully Illustrated!!!
My daughter is now two months old and I am trying to put together a library of books that will catch her eye! Rainforest Animals is a beautifully illustated and informative book that, for now, she loves to look at.

Basically all the book is is pictures of various rainforest animals such as a monkey, a frog and an anteater, with a nice short poem about what they are on the opposite page. I know it sounds simple, but the pictures are so colorful and life like your child is sure to love them, mine does!

I highly suggest picking up this book for your children, also if you are looking for a few more with beautiful pictures, Moon Dance and Rainbow Sea by Lassen are wonderful too!

Gorgeous and captivating illustrations! Right now we look at the pictures and talk about the names and sounds of the animals. There is a simple accompaning prose to each animal that should maintain her interest when she is older. One of my daughter's favorites!

The illustrations in this book are beautiful.I strongly believe in introducing children to the animals and habitat of the rain forest.This book is very basic, as the only text is the name of each animal on the left page with a picture of the animal on the right.It lists eight animals andshows a large picture of the rain forest in the opening and endingpages.

Wisdom is priceless
Thiswas a textbook, that I was required to read for my Anthro class. I was so amazed when I started reading it.The Author; Stuart Schlegel, does a wonderful job of his presentation in detail of the Teduray people in Figel. There wisdoms and culture's of life,are so moving and heartfelt,it leaves you wishing, you could have been leaving in the Rainforest also.If we all had an opportunity to live amoung such precious people,we too would be forever changed. What a GREAT BOOK !.. So inspiring it leaves you questioning your inter-soul, and your purpose in life !

Broadens your perspective
I believe that it is always beneficial to step outside our own culture for a while, to see how others live and how we can learn from them.

Especially when the culture we are observing is one as beautiful as the Teduray. They, like so many indigenous people, lived their lives with the well-being of the community as their focus. This is in sharp contrast to the lonely and individualistic lives of so many Americans.

The people of the Teduray village in which Dr Schlegel lived were all massacred years ago. We find this out in the beginning of the book. It was heartbreaking for him, as he lets us know. Then, as you go on to read the book, learning about his two years with the Teduray, you get to know the people - their names, personalities, lifestyles - you come to care about them. I found that knowing they had all been killed led me to place greater importance on learning from them. The temporary nature of their lives gave permanence to the wisdom they imparted.

They lived beautifully, communally, with great compassion. I felt humbled, and grateful to have read their story and learned from them.

I highly recommend this book. It is lovely, heart-centered, and written by a clearly beautiful man.

And if you like this book, you probably will also like The Continuum Concept by Jean Liedloff. I learned many of my better parenting skills from this book - another study of living within an indigenous community.

good choice for anthropology students
This is a very good, readable book. It depicts a culture in which helping others was the normal--not the charitable--thing to do. The mindset of the Teduray people of the Philippine rainforest, with whom the author Stuart Schlegel lived for years, is a world view that, sadly, seems almost unbelievable for people who are indoctrinated into a capitalistic system. It's like a splash of cold water in the face. Wouldn't it be nice for every Anthropology 101 student in the U.S. to experience this book, if for no other reason at all simply to face the fact that there are human mindsets possible that are not ruled by money, greed, scarcity, and conspicuous consumption?

There have been many books about tribal people, gathering- hunting societies, like the Bambuti of the Congo rain forest, the Kung Bushmen, the Inuit, Native Americans. Most of these people have valuessimilar to those of the Forest Teduray. Gathering - hunting societies have to be cooperative because its the only way they can survive. There are no hierarchies for the same reason, and women are always at least equal to men because in most such economies they provide 70- 80% of the foodNevertheless the Forest Teduray are a special kind of people for a number of reasons. They are semi agricultural, and they live in villages rather than small bands, and these villages are connected to each other in a very loose, unstructured federation. And yet they have not only maintained the basic core values of traditional gatherer- hunting peoples, but have developed and refined them into a way of life that not only works perfectly for them, but actually seems possible for our own society. It is a bit of a stretch, I admit, and the historical record is hardly encouraging. It does appear that nation states must always develop male dominated hierarchical and violent, aggressive societies. But there is no compelling reason to believe that this is necessary. The Teduray think it is "no way to live". Just imagine living in a Teduray world: a global human society living in harmony with everyone else, and with the planet. As difficult as it will surely be to get there, it's got to be worth trying. I never saw a better manual for how to live this way than Wisdom from a Rain Forest. The Teduray really know how to live, and they know how to talk about it. I think the world needs this book, and I wish everyone would read it. There are always many books on the best seller lists about how to fix your own personal inner life, to provide soup for your soul or something. But maybe we can't do any of that by ourselves. Maybe we need to work together to build a healthy society. A way to live the Teduray would call "just right". Many times you may hear people say "this book changed my life".I have always believed this is not really possible, that no book can ever really do that. This book changed my life.

Yet their success must be attributed to more than natural barriers of rapids and waterfalls, to more than lack of "contact" with our "modern" world. The ethnographic history recounted here includes not only the Spanish discovery of the Yekuana but detailed indigenous accounts of the entire history of Yekuana contact with Western culture, revealing an adaptive technique of mythopoesis by which the symbols of a new and hostile European ideology have been consistently defused through their incorporation into traditional indigenous structures.The author's initial point of departure is the Watunna, the Yekuana creation epic, but he finds his principal entrance into this mythic world through basketry, focusing on the eleborate kinetic designs of the round waja baskets and the stories told about them. Wonderful read, informative and engrossing.
This book is a fascinating account of Mr. Beehler's time in Papua New Guinea, told from the perspective of a scientist and conservationist.That being said, LOST WORLDS reads like an adventure yarn.So If you can't make it to the tropical rain forests yourself, this book is the next best thing to being there.Highly recommended for those who love being informed and transported all at one.

Interesting book, great cover
The author Bruce Beehler is vice president for the Melanesia and Pacific Islands programs at Conservation International. In Lost Worlds, he has written an extremely interesting account of rainforest field biology and conservation. He gives fascinating details of twelve field trips he has taken over the past three decades to Papua New Guinea, India, Madagascar, Indonesia, the Philippines, Panama, and the Ivory Coast. He is a well-known ornithologist, so most of his emphasis is on the bird populations in the places he visits.

Mr. Beehler's writing style is fine, and his descriptions of the field trips are extremely interesting. The only areas where the book bogs down a touch are in his discussions of how we should be attempting to preserve rainforest areas and how to deal with indigenous populations. This subject admittedly is very important, but he addresses it an extremely dry manner.

If you are interested in the natural world, you should enjoy Lost Worlds. The cover of the book by itself is reason enough to at least take a look.

A Biologist's Journeys to the Other Rainforests
Bruce Beehler, an ornithologist working for Conservation International, has written an interesting and very readable book of his experiences and insights into the conservation of tropical forests.He writes mostly of the forests outside of Amazonia, including southern and northern India, Papua New Guinea,the Phillipines, Ivory Coast,Madagascar and Panama.

This was a book that I found I didn't want to end as I was reading.I very much enjoyed his stories and comments ranging from observations of birds and wildlife to insights on conservation and concerns for the local people most impacted by parks and preserves.

Beehler doesn't quite match the eloquence of say Alexander Skutch (A Bird Watcher's Adventures in Tropical America), but he does provide an enjoyable read, new thoughts on conservation, and inspiration to act to help protect and enjoy the biodiversity of the tropics.

Best nature book of the year
For years I though 'A Naturalist in New Guinea" by Bruce Beehler could not be topped. But "Lost Worlds" has done just that. I have longed for a book that would serve as a tour of these magnificent areas by great ornithologists and not only in a field guide fashion. Beehler takes us through New Guinea and the forests of Panama and India in a frank and approachable manner making the experience seem very real. I felt like I was there. Having grown up in Panama and spent a lot of my life on Pipeline Road I felt instantly transported back there. I wish other great scientists of today would follow in Beehler's footsteps and relate their experiences in prose form and not only in field guide fashion. The positive effect on forest conservation and awareness could be furthered even more as these books could reach many audiences that may not otherwise be able to visit these places.Congratulations on an outstanding narrative.

Wonderful view of the worlds rainforests.
Most readers know Bruce Beehler for his field guide type of books, Birds of New Guinea, etc. This is a whole different book. Part adventure story, part field biology and conservation. You learn as much about the native people of the various forests visited as you do the flora and fauna. For anyone who is facinated by the world of birds, this is a must read. I've been a bird watcher and aviculturists for over 40 years and have an entire library of bird books. I'm very happy to add Lost Worlds to my collection.
