Editorial Review Product Description At one time rainforests covered about 14% of the earth’s surface; now they’re reduced to just 6%. As home to some of the most diverse plant and animal species ever known, this decline has grave implications for both man and animal kingdoms. A is for Anaconda: A Rainforest Alphabet explores the world’s rainforests as it explains their important role and showcases their wonders. Nature writer Anthony Fredericks gives an A-Z tour of the many facets and fascinating facts of these tropical environments. Exotic inhabitants including the basilisk lizard and kinkajou are highlighted, along with explanations of forest structure such as understory and canopy. In A is for Anaconda young readers will meet the many endangered plant and animal species, understand the progression of a food web, and appreciate why the rainforest has been called the “world’s medicine chest.” Customer Reviews (1)

Editorial Review Product Description During a working visit to Brazil, Dr. Thomas David was given a packet of leaves and bark by a native patient as thanks for his work, and a shaman gave him a recipe for a tea used by the rainforest people to treat a variety of ailments. Dr. David began using these plants in his clinical research in Europe and soon discovered that they were producing amazing results among patients suffering from cancer, AIDS, and other diseases that compromise the immune system. Preliminary studies performed at Stanford and Harvard have substantiated his findings, bringing Dr. David international attention for his groundbreaking work. Dr. David's story is significant not only for its account of research that may herald a major breakthrough in curing diseases that have been the scourge of the modern world, but also for its emphasis on the vast and largely unrecognized pharmacopoeia of the rainforest that is in imminent danger of being lost forever. Beautifully Illustrated!!! Basically all the book is is pictures of various rainforest animals such as a monkey, a frog and an anteater, with a nice short poem about what they are on the opposite page. I know it sounds simple, but the pictures are so colorful and life like your child is sure to love them, mine does! I highly suggest picking up this book for your children, also if you are looking for a few more with beautiful pictures, Moon Dance and Rainbow Sea by Lassen are wonderful too!
my baby loves it!
The Illustrations Make the Book I recommend this book for children up to three years old.Olderchildren will probably want more of a story. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description Schlegel's lively ethnography of the Teduray portrays how theirbehavior and traditions revolved around kindness and compassion forhumans, animals, and the spirits sharing their worlds. Schlegeldescribes the Teduray's remarkable legal system and their strongstory-telling tradition, their elaborate cosmology, and their ritualcelebrations. At the same time, Schlegel recounts his owntransformation--how his worldview as a member of an advanced, civilized society was shaken to the core by a so-called primitivepeople. He begins to realize how culturally determined his own valuesare and to see with great clarity how much the Teduray can teach himabout gender equality, tolerance for difference, generosity, andcooperation. By turns funny, tender, and gripping, Wisdom from a Rainforest honors the Teduray's legacy and helps us see how much we can learn from a way of life so different from our own. Customer Reviews (12)

The chapters in this book cover a broad range of topical research areas, from impacts of different forest-use intensities, sustainable management of agroforestry to integrated land-use concepts. |

Editorial Review Product Description Perhaps it is not possible to experience all the mysterious sounds, the unfamiliar smells, and the spectacular sights of a tropical rainforest without ever visiting one. But this exhilarating and honest book comes wondrously close to taking the reader on such a journey. Bruce M. Beehler, a widely traveled expert on birds and tropical ecology, recounts fascinating details from twelve field trips he has taken to the tropics over the past three decades. As a researcher, he brings to life the exotic rainforests and the people who inhabit them; as a conservationist, he makes a plea for better ways of managing rainforestsa resource that the world cannot do without.” Drawing on his experiences in Papua New Guinea, India, Madagascar, Indonesia, the Philippines, Panama, and the Ivory Coast, Beehler describes the surprisesboth pleasant and unpleasantof doing science and conservation in the field. He explains the role that rainforests play in the lives of indigenous peoples and the crucial importance of understanding local cultures, customs, and politics. The author concludes with simple but tough solutions for maintaining rainforest health, expressing fervent hope that his great-grandchildren and others may one day also hear the rainforest whisper its secrets.
