Product Description
"Right now, almost 1,200 bird species -- one in eight -- are threatened with extinction, and without our help, hundreds will disappear by the year 2100."
- from the introduction

About a third of the world bird species make their homes in rainforests, which offer moderate temperatures, protective shelter and ample food supply. Unfortunately the rainforests are disappearing. A few thousand years ago tropical rainforests covered as much as 12 percent of the Earth's land surface. Today, that figure is reduced by half, the result of logging, mining, and the clearing of land for human settlements. More than 600 species of rainforest birds are threatened with extinction.

Rainforest Bird Rescue profiles projects and people around the world who are working to prevent the loss of these beautiful birds:
- Somprat Polchoo is head of the Khao Nor Chuchi forest protection unit in southern Thailand, one of the last known strongholds of the critically endangered Gurney's Pitta
- The Western Canada Wilderness Committee is working to prevent the destruction of the Northern Spotted Owl's habitat in the ancient rainforests of British Columbia
- The Rainforest Alliance, which encourages farmers in El Salvador to grow coffee in the traditional way -- under a forest canopy that supports wildlife -- is saving precious habitat for the golden-cheeked warbler
- Richard and Margot Frisius are founders of Amigos de las Ayes, which breeds endangered Costa Rican macaws and releases them into the wild.

Illustrated with 50 spectacular color photographs, Rainforest Bird Rescue covers the people, the issues and the challenges involved in preserving a future for endangered wildlife.

About the Firefly Animal Rescue Series:

The Firefly Animal Rescue Series identifies endangered and threatened species and what is being done to protect them. Combining lively, accessible text and stunning color photographs, each book provides a detailed overview of the species, describing its characteristics, behavior, habits, physiology and more. ... A Different Kind of Hero (an illustrated children's environmental fable about a monkey protecting the rainforest)

5-0 out of 5 stars a great story w/equally great illustrations
What attracted me to this book was on the back it says that the author was inspired to write this story when she was in 4th grade. It was right after she studied about the rainforest. Stories written through the eyes of a child can be so insightful as was the case with A DIFFERENT KIND OF HERO.

The story centers around a rainforest monkey named Tomagochi who felt boring and plain. When men came into the forest with bulldozers threatening to destroy his home, he didn't run away. Instead, he took action and became a hero.

Miss Evans has created a relatable character that kids can connect with. The cover design and illustrations were done by Colleen Gedrich, which fit the story perfectly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Story of Strength and Conservation!

A Different Kind of Hero by Leah Beth Evans, is a story about believing in yourself and having the confidence and courage to do what is right. The colorful illustrations brings to life the adventure of Tomagochi. He is a monkey who lives in a rainforest and feels that he is not very special compared to his brightly colored friends. But they assure him that it doesn't matter what you look like on the outside, it is what is inside that counts. Being special is not because of your appearance, it is what you do. Tomagochi is given a chance to prove himself when bulldozers and workers come in to their rainforest and try to destroy it. He immediately tries to stop them and succeeds. He proves to one and all that when believing in yourself, you can accomplish any goal.

5-0 out of 5 stars A special story
Three animals of the rainforest cluster together to talk. Tomagochi the monkey was discouraged and blue because he "thought there was nothing special about him." He was always looking outside himself and only seeing the beauty and special qualities his friends possessed. Now Peshe, the tiger, had a beautiful coat and as the king of the jungle he was known to be "fast and strong." Everyone knew that tigers were very special. His friend Mocho, the tucan, was another beautiful creature of the rainforest. He had "shiny black feathers and a rainbow beak" and could fly. Everyone knew that tucans were very special. Monkeys like Tomagochi just weren't!

Tomagochi's two friends tried hard to make him feel better by impressing upon him that he was indeed very special. Mocho and Pesche were not only special, but they were very wise. Mocho told Tomagochi that "Everyone has something special about them. You just have to wait." Tomagochi, who wasn't very handsome, didn't appear to be convinced. "It doesn't matter how you look on the outside," said Pesche. Soon, however, the group's conversations would come to a screeching halt when one day a disturbing thing began to happen. The rainforest was being invaded by bulldozers driven by men wielding axes. The animals began to flee. Pesche ran like the wind and Mocho urged Tomagochi to hide. That something special inside Tomagochi was about to be revealed. What was he going to do to save the rainforest?

This is a marvelous story by a different kind of author. This value-based tale was written by an environmentally conscious fourth grade girl. It is her way of telling the world about the importance of the rainforest, its horrifying deforestation and its unstated, but essential role in ecology. The storyline flows nicely, keeping the reader wanting to know in what way Tomagochi will come into his own and discover something special about himself. This is a special kind of story written by a special kind of gal!

Quill says: There are many ways to save planet Earth, but having young heroes like Leah Beth Evans and friends like Tomogochi will make it much easier!

Product Description
This provocative book documents how national and global politics intersected to bring about changes in Brazil's environmental preservation laws. Luiz Barbosa argues that global forces coupled with two decades of military rule in Brazil led to policies that promoted deforestation for the sake of development, ultimately having devastating consequences for Amaz(tm)nia's ecosystem and its native populations. By the mid-1980s, changes in global ecopolitics and the onset of democracy in Brazil paved the way for new environmental preservation laws. Barbosa's study is unique in showing the impact of global processes on third-world environmental degradation and in its claim that democracy can facilitate preservation. The latter point is further emphasized in a comparative chapter in which Barbosa demonstrates the importance of democracy for environmental preservation in Costa Rica, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Sociologists and anthropologists interested in issues surrounding economic development as well as environmental activists will find much to their liking in this work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Deforestation in the Amazon
This is an excellent book on the deforestation occuring in the Brazilian Amazon region. It makes an excellent argument that deforestation is connected to both economic and political interests, at a regional, national and global level.

3-0 out of 5 stars GOOD HISTORY OF AMAZON RELATED EVENTS, ONLY OK ANALYSIS
In this book, the author intends to initially describe the history of major projects and dreams for the Amazon through military and civilian rule in Brazil. The facts are indeed interesting and likely correct. The author describes in good detail the grand dreams of the military government to develop the region. Then he describes the sea change that occured when democracy returned. With democracy, there was a renewed interest in preservation.

However, the analysis is difficult to swallow from a few perspectives:
1. Much of the analysis is written from a traditional marxist point of view, with a veil of class conflict, which in this case means poor indians and farmers vs international interests. It often feels like he simplifies scenarios by bringing in the marxist class conflict perspective to explain situations that are in fact more complex than that.
2. Along with the marxist perspective, any explorer in search of profit is poorly portrayed in the book. The author focuses on government action and plays down private enterprise in the Amazon as basically undesirable. It becomes clear quite quickly that the author does not believe in capitalism.
3. There is a main thesis, that democracy brings about preservation.Though it seems to be true, the book forcefully tries to fit every single fact to match the thesis. Some conclusions do not seem warranted.

Overall, I would not recommend this to someone just getting acquainted with the region. If you are knowledgeable of the economics and sociology of the Amazon, then this is a good book to give you a different non-mainstream somewhat biased perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Missionary children raised in jungle
This book is a total surprise. A missionary kid with 9 brothers and sisters describes his childhood live as a native among a very primitive and murderous tribe. His experiences are beyond imagination and told with hilarious honesty.I laughed so much and learned about the struggles of that life and how God keeps and protects his children. The children spread the gospel to the Yanamono tribe and won many hearts to Christ.I happen to know 2 memebers of the family and they really are as he describes.A great read that you can't put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Current real life adventure in the Amazon.
This first person story by a friend growing up in the Amazon jungle with native indians is interesting, educational, and inspiring.I recommend it as great reading and source of encouragement.Lots of humorous life events also. Mike Dawson's work "Growing Up Yanomamo" won an award as Book of the year in 2010 for biography and has a new follow-on work (actually part II of the story)named "I can See The Shore" (also available on Amazon.com) that is not only an inspiring and heart-warming volume, but helps readers complete the important understanding of the activities presented in "Growing Up Yanomamo". I was privileged to spend an evening with Mike and Keila Dawson recently and can share that their story, as presented in these two volumes, is just the "tip of the iceberg", so to speak. I was inspired, encouraged, my heart ached, and I cried (yes, grown men do cry) at Mike's presentation and openness of their joys and traumas of life, and how God works through them. I highly recommend these books, especially to those who first read "Growing Up Yanomamo". You will truly have your emotions touched with laughter, sadness, joy, sorrow, and most of all inspiration to further illuminate your own life. Mike's mom (Millie Dawson) also has a related work "All the Day Long", that I bought from Amazon.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life Changing Experience
The engaging style of Mike Dawson's writing makes it impossible to put his book down. You get the impression that you are listening to favorite stories from a very good friend. You feel as if you are traveling the winding river highways of the Amazonas region along with him in exciting adventures reaching out to the Yanomamo people. It is a thrilling experience that will leave you hungry for more and convicted to help in the continuing saga of this tribal people!

5-0 out of 5 stars Read the awesome power & presence of God in Growing Up Yanomamo!
This is one of the most well written books that I have ever read. You would think that it was written by Mark Twain with the suspense, challenges and progression of a gifted writer, which I believe Michael Dawson to be, as well as a seasoned veteran of the Yanomamo!

You will not be able to put this book down as, just like in Huckleberry Finn, you're right there with Michael in his many adventures. His heart for the Yanomamo can never be question and his dedication to push through some of the most difficult things in life, let alone on a mission field. If you do not read this book, you will be missing out on one of the most literary brilliances in a lifetime. God bless to the Dawsons, their families and to the Yanomamo.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVED this book!
This was unlike any other book I have ever read.It is an adventure that seems like fiction, but it is true!I am three quarters of the way through this book and will be sad when I come to the end as I would like the adventures to go on and on!The stories are eye-opening, inspiring, and many are just laugh-out-loud funny!Mr. Dawson is a wonderful story teller. After I finish, I am going to pass this onto my teenage daughter.I will certainly be ordering any other books written by Michael Dawson after reading this one. ...
