It's everything a kid could want besides a pet!
This is a wonderful book for younger children!(Older people can read it as well,but is geared toward young readers.)She presents each pocket pet well,by saying pluses and dowsides of having each.I know each pet well and obviously she does too!(I did find one slight problem in the gerbil section:this book was written a while back when gerbils only came in 1 color,brown,so of course she says they come in just that color.But gerbils these days gerbils come in tons of colors!)It includes cute pictures too!I would recommend it to anyone who has or is a small child:) ... This was a really great, informative book that I would recommend to anyone who owns, or is thinking about becoming the owner of a rat. They are stigmatized, but they make great companions, and this book will help you to make your rat sociable, and teach you how to keep them healthy. This book was not written by any " rattie " professional . It was
comprised to fit into a collection of books for AnimalPlanet.
This book contains information which could be harmful ( even fatal)
to a pet rat. AnimalPlanet HAS in fact been contacted to pull ( or
revise ) this book. Please feel confident in purchasing any 4 or 5 star
rated pet rat book that Amazon does offer. These books , as you can see
are written by rat experts and enthusiasts much to the delight and
gratitude of happy pet owners.

Animal Planet Rats by Julie Mancini
This book is poorly researched and is filled with inaccuracies that could both harm and even kill....yes, kill your pet rat. Unfortunately it
was simply put out to complete a quote/unquote , PET CARE LIBRARY book series for Animal Planet. The desire to create an informative and helpful tool for "new" rattie owners was NOT the intention of this publication.
This book was finally approved for "release" this week and I just received a copy early today....I've had it for only hours now and have already contacted the executive offices at Dicovery/AnimalPlanet to bring this to their attention as I believe it was not their intention to in anyway harm pet rats. It is my belief that when this all comes to light (very soon I'm sure) that Animal Planet will themselves pull this book from distribution in an effort to escape any lawsuits and scandal that would certainly arise from any pet rat deaths directly linked to the pet care information given in this book.
Caring pet owners should feel confident in purchasing the standard
"well researched" books on rat care offered here on Amazon and locate these in accordance with their outstanding reviews and 4 and 5 star ratings. ... Read more

Wonderful For Novice and Experienced Rat Fanciers!
I have read the book The Proper Care Of Fancy Rats (t.f.h.) - repeatedly - and have found the information to be invaluable.It covers basic care, illnesses, varieties and standards, breeding and some of the basics of rat genetics.It also includes a lot of beautiful full color photos.I've read a few other books on rodent care, none of which were as detailed as this (those books all ended up in a used book store).I would HIGHLY suggest that every rat owner purchase this book and keep it handy.Its easy to follow and covers all the bases!

I had at one time purchised This book, And i didn't have the money to keep it so I took it back. Days after, I yearned to have it back. So I went back to the store were I had bought it and they told me they Didn't have itanymore. I felt so sad, and up to this day I havn't been able to find itanywere.Now that I found it, I will be sure to buy it, and to keep it. The first time I read this book, I was astounded! Mr. Mays is a true expert, presenting the information in an easy to read, clear style. Where other authors have failed, Mr. Mays includes almost everything on breeding,illnesses, and showing. I highly recommend this book to a novice rat owneror shower. Good work, Mr. Mays!

i'm not to impressed its the exact same book only larger as the other book she wrote doesn't tell you anything new the history about rats is so vague i'm not impressed at all i dont know why people like the book so much i personally dont but thats just me

A MUST for rat companions
My grandson loves his new pet rat, Roxanne. Unfortunately, his previously also-loved rat passed into pet heaven at less than a year old. I couldn't tell him much about proper nutrition or care, or how long they may live, so I want him to be better prepared this time. Roxanne will probably also give me a kiss for this. This book is brightly illustrated, with good instructions.

The Ultimate Care Guide
This is the most complete and accurate guide to caring for pets rats that I have ever read. It is a terrible shame that it has been allowed to go out of print. It is an indispensible reference for new and experienced rat owners. Nutrition, training, history, health...it's all here, along with some really cute photos.

Super book!
This is just about the best rat book I have ever seen!I really think it deserves 6 stars, but that wasn't an option. :-)It is a exelent beginner's book, but even the most experienced rat owner can learn somthing from it.I only dissagree with Mrs. Ducommun on one point- she says to use 1x1 1/2 inch mesh for a cage.This is too big- a rat could get it's head stuck!Other then that, everything you need to know about rats is in here.The book also gives good information about breeding and showing your rats.A must-read!<:8)~

Excellent book!
I concur with the other reviews in this space.It really is an excellent guide, and the author's website...is also quite helpful.I am truly impressed by the detail of this book, which still maintains an easy reading level (so it's suitable for kids in the 9-12 range right on up to grownups) and an attractive layout.In addition, the author states that she is willing to help *you* with any rat questions or problems and gives her contact information, including phone number!That's dedication!

Some day, I hope to get hold of a copy of her Rat Health Care booklet, but for now this book remains my ratty Bible. ... Read more

For the little ones, about the (other) little ones
With this book, young rat-lovers would not only learn the important, basic facts about their pet rats, but most likely also play a greater role in caring for their rats.The fundamentals of rat care are here in a simple, colorful, engaging, endearing, and non-intimidating way.The "narrator" of the book is a bright, energetic rat: "A nesting box or a hammock is the best for me.I need plenty of... bedding and enough room to snuggle up with my friends."The graphic design of the book is excellent: full color photos of adorable rats (Siamese are especially featured), bold graphics with facts and warnings, rattie footprint borders, and amusing thought bubbles with most of the photos.

Unlike many rat care books, the guidance in this book is modern - no pine or cedar shavings (toxic or as rat in the book says "The dust could make me sick."), no rickety metal or wire botttomed cages, and pellets (and healthy treats) are recommended over seed mixtures.

This is definitely a book for younger children though.A quote: "You will need an adult to help take care of me.He or she will make sure we are both safe and do not hurt each other by mistake.Teach your adult helper everything you learn from this book."That could lead to some great child-parent-rodent moments, but the adult(s) in the rat-friendly household should probably also have a more in-depth rat care guide for the detailed biological and medical information and heavy problems (old age is mentioned in this book, but not death or debilitating illness).With your aid, this book should help your little rat owner become a more responsible, more nuturing person. ...
