I highly recommend this book to any teacher.I am an LD teacher and I have used this book while working with students at all levels (kindergarten to medical school students).I first bought a copy in 1993,that edition wore out and I have bought at least two more.I occasionally teach a graduate level class at Marshall University, when I do I always recommend my students purchase this book.My students rave about it.I use this book all the time for teaching reading, writing, and spelling.It is an invaluable resource.

I am really enjoying this so far!
This is a great reading list.They had so many of my already favorite authors in there, Katie Fforde, Jennifer Crusie (Bet Me!) and even Mary Stewart, my favorite ever - that I trust their recommendations for the other ones.I've read one of their recommendations so far and I am looking forward to many, many hours of reading!

One of the best lists for readers.
I bought this book because of my obsession with lists. I have to say out of all the books about books this one is the most clear. Some of the others try to cloud the books with personal opinions, and nothing about the book itself.

However, some of my favorite books did not make the list. I'm sad to say.

Well Rounded and Fun
This is a great compilation of suggested reading in all different types of genres and subgenres.I haven't disliked a book yet that was recommended.It was a good way to get started in genres I don't typically read, but was interested in.I have Book Lust as well and I found this book better organized and the suggestions more to my taste.

A great list, but...
This is an outstanding book of other books we should read. Usually, these types of books are thrown together and no thought has been put into them. With this reading list, the author took their time to construct this book. I just wish there was more of a description of each book and not the authors. I feel the authors are focused on more than the books. Otherwise, this is a great list for reading everything you and I have missed out on.

What a fantastic book!
This book is perfect for someone who wants to try a new genre but doesn't know where to start or if someone has read all the bestseller's in a certain area but wants to delve deeper. It is also obvious these authors' have done extensive research in coming up with such a comprehensive list.

The table of contents is clear and concise with each chapter on a different subject or genre. From true-crime, historical fiction and humor to romance and horror. Each section has a list of the classics and then recommended reads, and under each recommended book is a brief synopsis.

I dove into the romance section. The picks were perfect. French Silk by Sandra Brown. I loved that book, and of course Whitney, My Love by Judith McNaught was listed. Actually, if this title had been missing I would not be able to recommend this book.

Other authors in the romance genre I hadn't heard of. Examples are Eve Silver and her book Dark Desires and Date Me Baby, One More Time by Stephanie Rowe. Both books are on my must read list now.

I also spent tons of time in the horror section. I was glad to see so much more than Stephen King and Dean Koontz. I was pleased that Dead Until Dark by Charlene Harris was included under `More Great Reads'. Harris was one of my favorite new authors I discovered a couple of years back.

The only downfall to the book is that it is too short. I would love for the authors to have a book on each genre--one on romance, one on history, etc.

I do highly recommend this book. The authors have great taste, especially when I can't really argue much with their recommendations. Who better to give advice than these authors who are all librarians with 75 years of combined experience? I don't think anyone can top their wealth of knowledge on what people read and enjoy. ... You Like This Historical Fiction, Find Another that's Similar
This is a book of lists. Specifically it breaks historical fiction into five broad categories with from 8 to 18 lists within the category broken down by sub-category. Some of the categories cover subjects that are clearly indicated by their name - Greatest War Stories. Some take a bit more explanation - Brilliant Facsimile. (These are fictional biographies of historical figures that are writtenin the format of a real biography.)

The book is published by the American Library Association and it carries an interesting copyright notice. After the standard you can't reproduce, etc. it says: 'An exception is made for nonprofit materials used for educational purposes within the organization.'

But later it says that libraries 'might post [the booklists] on web sites, place in newsletters, or use in handouts to patrons.' There is also at least an indication that booksellers might use it also.

For ALL Book-Lovers, Not Just Aspiring College Students
Many different universities and colleges provided the author with the names of works they recommend or use in first-year English classes. I remember seeing the first edition of this book when I was in high schooland falling madly in love with it. Unfortunately, it was at the publiclibrary and someone lost it a month after I checked it out. I am anobsessive list-maker and this adds fuel to the fire of my two passions,lists and literature. Not all the books listed in here are predictable,canonical works, either. I'm surprised how many are out-of-print, makingthe search for great reading material even more fun. One gripe: nocomprehensive index. I may just make my own.

A great source for finding something worthwhile to read
This book was written by my high school english teachers.It was published and I purchased it years after I graduated from college.I'm using the book as a means to measure how "well read" I am. I have the UPC code as a tattoo thats how much I love this book
I am a typical Gemini and a Jack of all trades, in other words everthing facinates me but I never can stick to anything.....untill I reead this book. I dabbled in biblioholism before this book but after I am a confirned bibliomaniac about "books about book". I love the short reads of each chapter and the tales that take place at various time about book proves that they are timeless. The editors could have doubled the chapters in my opinion but I am very biased. This is my Favorite book in the world and I always have a copy of it with me at all times, I hardly ever re-read a book but this one I re-read at least 3 times a year. Each time I read it differently - front to back, just open to a page and go from there or I might read a page here and there till I finish the book. I love this book so much i had the UPC code of the trade paperback tattooed on my neck and when i got to a big book chain I walk in and point to my neck and ask if they can order me a copy of this book. I don't know but ever since I found this book I have found how to read and what I love to read the most. It has improved my attention span, focus on ideas and has given me a measuring stick in which to hold up to all other books I read.

Well written & a tremendous resourse

I love this book.I borrowed a copy but quickly decided that I needed to buy my own.How else could I dip into the essays, enjoy the quotes and debate the lists?

This book is both a self-contained banquet and a guide to all manner of bibliofeasts.This is a book for those of us who like possessing books as well as reading books.I am heartened to know that I am not alone in my reluctance to lend books except in the most exceptional of circumstances.No, rather than lend a book I'd rather gift a copy.

If this book is revised, I think the editors should consider including a paean to Post-it notes as a means of marking important quotes and passages.Wait, we probably should research the properties of the adhesive first.I don't want to damage my books.

A Delight!
What a delightful little anthology that every devoted reader and collector should own.This book was my constant coffee-table companion for several weeks.I enjoyed sitting on the couch and reading an essay or story or list here and there.I really felt I could relate to the writers and their passion for books.My favorite essay was Rob Kaplan's "The Ritual," which describes his methodic routine of purchasing and cataloguing his books.I could relate to his meticulous practices, as I have my own specific methods upon attaining a book.Most enjoyable were the helpful lists, like "Ten Best Selling Books Rejected by Publishers Twenty or More Times," and "100 Great Novels in the English Language."These prompted me to get out my highlighter and evaluate what was I had read or what was in my library.This is the perfect book for all bibliophiles who, like me, can relate to Umberto Eco's statement that a library is a work in progress. ... Excellent, excellent, excellent!
I'm an avid reader of books about books, especially other people's annotated lists of books to read, and this is one of the very best I've seen. It's subtitled "A Critical Guide to the Complete Works of 110 Authors," and it's an excellent introduction for even the most serious reader of modern literary fiction to those authors and books one inevitably misses. Some of my favorites are here, including Steven Milhauser, David Lodge, and Jane Smiley, but I was also made to think again about Mian Kundera, Barbara Kingsolver, and a few others by whom I had not been particularly impressed. The biographical notes will also give you some clues to where an author's work comes from, and the annotations on individual books are uniformly excellent -- even when I disagree with them. This is one for making marginal notes in!

The Reading List - Contemporary Fiction
A fantastic resource whether you are looking for book club suggestions or ideas for your own reading.I have just begun on the journey to increase my knowledge of contemporary authors and their novels by reading thestarred books --the ones the editor considers to be "the best" byeach author included.I'm sure anyone will "discover" unfamiliarauthors or novels not yet read.It makes a terrific gift for the booklovers on your list.

Book groups should consider READING LIST
David Rubel's READING LIST has opened the door to so many books for me. Shortly after finishing it, I sought out Beryl Bainbridge's YOUNG ADOLF and several of Martin Amis' works.Not only that, but READING LIST spurred meinto re-trying Thomas Pynchon's massive MASON & DIXON; this timearound, I actually enjoyed it. Through this book, I have discovered thejoys of John Irving, Salman Rushdie, and many others. Book groups would dowell to consider READING LIST when choosing their next selection. Whoknows? Maybe it would be great selected material itself. There's certainlyenough room for discussion.

Pssst..Looking For a New Author to Read?
David Rubel compiles a reading list of 110 authors and describes their books. Two good aspects of this book are that he doesn't just give his opinion of the books, but tells how the works were received by the criticsand the public; and he lists every book written by each author. Thus one isnot presented by a select list of what Mr. Rubel considers to be anauthor's best works.

When a book such as this comes out there is theusual cry about what authors didn't make the book. I may have my owncriticisms in this regard, but that's not the point. I am not interested inknowing about writer's that I already love or hate; I want to hear aboutauthors that I am unfamiliar with. Hard to use on the Kindle
I bought this for my Kindle, but it is hard to navigate.There are probably better options out there.

Easy to use version
This Kindle version is easy to use with a good table of contents. There are quite of few typo's and the illustrations aren't that good so 4 stars.

Wonderful Work
The book of Genesis is a wise and insightful guide to life as every person will experience it. Adam, the son of God, is created in his image, as Adam discovers while experiencing not only his own life story, but that of his sons in turn, and comes to understand his father.
Adam's life is carefree until he reaches puberty and develops a need for female companionship. At that point Eve appears in Adam's life and is tempted by the snake. Eve and Adam subsequently loose their innocence and mature into knowledgeable and therefore fearful adults as they engage life's decisions with all their inevitable errors in judgment.The story continues with their offspring who present to the reader new life situations, to include sibling rivalry, and dealing with the world outside their family home. Eventually, their descendant Noah, comes to experience a new world altogether, but one no less imperfect for we his descendants, as all problems are of our own making. The New Testament continues our saga. The lessons are as valid today as when they were written. It is the life story of us all.The Bible should be mandatory reading for every pre-pubescent student no matter what their religious faith.

Good copy
As with the other reviews I have tried a number of free and paid for versions of the KJV on my Kindle, this is the best copy I have seen to date.

Don't read to me
I downloaded the KJV of the BIBLE so that I could put it on "read to me" while I drove to work.Imagine my surprise when the voice reads everything on the page, including the headings and the verse number.Also, the pronunciation is awful, as is the smoothness of the reading.Does not read it as sentences with appropriate punctuation, but as words.Kind of annoying.Work on pronunciation and diction. ... A Fun, Useful Reference
Several years ago, I was asked by the King William, Virginia County Schools to visit one of their middle-schools and give a series of talks and readings to the kids.I was impressed by their eagerness to read, spurred on primarily by the success of J. K. Rowling, Goosebumps and the Animorphs.I found myself at every turn being asked "What should I read now?"I gave them what authors and titles I could, but there's always the chance that my taste and theirs wouldn't coincide and I was concerned that a suggestion I made would be so disliked that it would turn the Asker against reading, a result devoutly NOT to be wished.

I wish now that I'd had a copy of Neil Hollands' READ ON...FANTASY FICTION back then, it would have made things a lot easier.What Hollands has done is create a reference sorted by ideas.Looking for books about wizards?Go to "Chapter Two: Character" on the table of contents and eyeball down to this entry - "Wizards and Warlocks: The Wise, the Wily, and the Wacky."Turn to the appropriate page, and there are seven authors and eight books listed beneath a brief descriptive paragraph.Same thing with barbarians, urban fantasy, giants and/or little folk, and practically every other subject you could want suggestions for.

Hollands, a librarian by profession, has a keen sense of placement that serves him well here.There's crossover, of course, but no more than is necesary and it's clear from the breadth of his listings that he has a near-encyclopedic grasp of authors and titles.

In addition, he also has a keen sense of wit; hardly a page goes by without a humorous reference or pun, which makes this one of the scarcest of references: one that's fun to simply sit back with and browse for the hell of it.

Recommended Books for the Little Ones
You can pretty much tell what this book is about from its title. It is a book, broken down into three major parts that gives lists of recommended books for children. The three parts are: School Subjects, Character and Values, Genres and Themes. Each of thes parts is further broken down into the specific lists themselves. For instance under Genres and Themes, there are Genres and Themes. Under themes there are Angels, Cowboys, Holidays. Some of these, such as Holidays are further broken down into Chinese New Year, Easter, Christmas, etc. All in all there are 100 lists.

While not copyright free, permission is given to libraries to copy the lists, put them into a newsletter or other such uses. The lists themself are organized on pages by themselves so that a library logo, clipart, etc. can be put on top of the pages before they are reproduced. There are also a dozen bookmarks that can be reprinted for library use.
