5-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased!
I picked this up for the soup recipes, but ended up most excited over the drink recipes! I was also pleasantly surprised to see that her baked goods chapters were not repeats of her other Mason Jar book, as is so often the case in other authors' works. I'm very happy to have found this!

4-0 out of 5 stars As expected.
These books aren't great but they are great at giving you ideas and also thinking outside of the typical box. Remember never give any of these recipes as a gift without having tried them first. I'm more interested in working towards recipes and mixes for camping and backpacking than my pantry or others as gifts. Yet if I come across a few great recipes I'll certainly share those and perhaps make some gift jars or mylar bag or zip bag ones up. This one is HOW TO CREATE Mason Jar Recipe Mixes not just the recipes already created for you. But I've been doing that all along anyway as I've worked myself through a few series of these type of food gifts in a jar recipe booklets for ideas. Kinda fun but slower right now as we are down to just two of us and used to be more fun to cook for a crowd or even the office crowd. Google for canned and freeze dried fruits and vegi's.....even dried beans and butter and dairy and cheese. Yes real cheese is available. Many are inexpensive and others like the real cheese is super expensive. Watch for sales....those who make year or longer pantries for religious reasons are quite into this kind of dried product. Meats and Soy protein bases too are available..some not so bad.
Think outside the box...and keep an open mind! Oh right several sites have recipes to go along with these dried products too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gifts
I was looking for gifts-in-a-jar when I came across this. It's great...I almost think I like it better.Great service from the vendor, too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice Book
I received this book as a Christmas gift.It seems to have a nice variety of recipes and is well-organized, with directions and helpful information up-front.I haven't used any of the recipes yet, but there are several that I'm looking forward to trying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've seen on this topic
As the holidays approach I liked the idea of making gifts in Mason jars, especially soups or stews. The end of the year is such a hectic time and often there is cold weather; what better to have on the shelf than a homemade, delicious and fast soup mix?

There are a number of books on the market with this idea and I have several others of these books. The Mason Jar Soup-To-Nuts Cookbook is by far my favorite.

Three pages devoted to each recipe, one for the labeling and each page can be easily copied to pass along.(One such booklet that I own is printed in red so that nothing can be copied. What a pain to have to write out the directions over and over--ugh!).

The recipes are tasty, hearty and delicious.Even my husband has been very impressed with the quality of the soup recipes.Three that we have made:Homemade Chicken Noodle, Very Veggie Pasta Soup, and a great Tortellini Soup that is really a whole meal.

Be prepared to have to buy spices and bouillon. It is very well worth it however and you will not believe the wonderful gourmet flavor achieved.Thyme is in just about every recipe, so if you can only afford one spice, that's the one.

I have made over 18 jars of the soups from this book, some for gifts but most for my own pantry.I love how prepared I feel for emergencies, last minute gifts or surprise dinner guests.I made four jars for a new mother and she was thrilled, saying it was her favorite present!

Hats off to the authors, you've saved me money, time and anxiety.Well done! ... Read more

Today, more and more peopleespecially teenagersare becoming vegetarians, but many of them live in households where the rest of the family eats meat.Forget the hassle of having to make several different meals to suit each individual need; veteran cookbook author Carol Gelles has designed basic recipes that can be finished in two ways:one with meat, and one without. The basic stuffed eggplant recipeafter the base of the dish is preparedcan become Cornbread Stuffed Eggplant for the vegetarians, and Turkey Stuffed Eggplant for the meat eaters.Moroccan Couscous becomes Moroccan Couscous with Curried Chickpeas or Moroccan Couscous with Lamb. And the book has been cleverly designed so that the basic recipe sits opposite the two finished recipes, eliminating the need to flip pages.Carol Gelless articles have appeared in many national publications including Weight ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Something for Me!
I have so many cookbooks that I was reluctant to add yet another to mycollection. However, as a vegetarian who has added some fish and chickento my diet (for a number of complicated reasons), I wanted some recipesthat had these foods without just being a slab o' meat on a plate.I likethis cookbook because it has many recipes that incorporate some meat, aswell as interesting and tasty looking vegetarian dishes.Since my childrenare still vegetarian, it's great to be able to prepare a single meal withand without meat. The recipes are easy and straightforward, and the authoroffers helpful advice about substitutions.I made the lo mein (half withtofu, half with shrimp).Everyone in my family loved it.It was easy toprepare, and making the two versions was a snap.I was impressed by thenumber of yummy looking vegan recipes.I also liked the way the authordivided the recipes into ethnic categories (American, Eastern European,Asian, etc). While some recipes are not gourmet fare (hot dog goulash orfried rice based on a Rice-a-Roni mix), most look simple and homey and someare definitely company fare.I thank Carol Gelles for simplifying makingveggie and non-veggie meals at the same time. And I thank her for makingthem taste good. ... The Amish Cook

Recollections and Recipes from an Old Order Amish Familyby Elizabeth Coblentz with Kevin Williams

Ten years ago, aspiring newspaper editor Kevin Williams convinced Elizabeth Coblentz, an Old Order Amish wife and mother, to write a weekly cooking column called "The Amish Cook." Each week Elizabeth shares a family recipe and discusses daily life on her Indiana farm, spent with husband, Ben, and their eight children and 32 grandchildren. THE AMISH COOK, a full-color cookbook based on Elizabeth’s columns, compiles more than 75 traditional Amish recipes, photographs of the Coblentz farm, practical gardening tips, cherished family tales, and firsthand accounts of traditional Amish events like corn-husking bees and barn raisings. A truly unique collaboration between a simple Amish grandmother and a modern-day newspaperman, THE AMISH COOK is a poignant and authentic look at a disappearing way of life. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Clunky
Many who read the newspaper series by Elizabeth Coblentz will likely enjoy this book more than I did. But for me it had a very clunky delivery. This is not Elizabeth's doing, but rather falls on the publisher of the book.

There are far too many things going on...from recipes to stories from Elizabeth to snipits of her favorite poems to commentary from the Editor....it become jumbled and provides a rather clumsy reading experience. The recipes themselves are strong and are a good collection to have.

I would highly recommend the book written by Elizabeth's daughter, Lovina, titled "The Amish Cook at Home". It had a much more reader friendly and relaxed style while having a definate direction.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Amish Cook-beautifully done!
This is such a wonderful book. it isn't the typical turisty type of Amish book, but REAL. It is beautifully written and true to life of an Old Order Amish family. Well done, Kevin Williams. RIP Elizabeth Coblentz.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
This cookbook has wonderful recipes from the Amish but it is much more.
It readslike a diary of Elizabeth Coblentz's life as an Amish wife, mother, and grandmother. Very interesting details like how she used to make 9 loaves of bread every week and would have them coming out of the oven when her 8 children came home from school. She takes the reader along on a wonderful read of the Amish life; quilting, canning, church, gardening, and much more.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Home Cooking Ever!
These recipes are great in this book, and the best thing about these recipes is that you do not have to go to a specialty store to find the ingredients. Everything in this book you will probably already have in your pantry, and everything in this book is wonderfully flavored. The recipes are for a large group of people, so if you make a recipe make sure to have a lot of people ready to eat. There are some really interesting stories about the cook and her family in the book too. Well worth the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting to understand the Amish
I checked out this book from the library and after reading most of it, I decided I had to have my very own copy so I purchased one on Amazon the very next day.It is a wonderful explanation of how the Amish got their name, how they arrived in PA and there are many delicious recipes, too many to copy. I can't wait to try them as I love to cook from scratch.I purchase Amish food often and was pleased to find these recipes. The recipes consist of everyday ingredients most have on hand.I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to eat well. The little stories are wonderful too. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good if you have alot of time on your hands....
This book is cute, and some of the recipes were good, but some of them anyone with an imagination could do. Like cutting up different colored apples & carots to make a "Tri-Color Apple & Carrot salad" page 23, doesnt take much imagiantion And although carving fancy designs into fruits and veggies is very very cute to look at,(page 63 Apple Roses) I don't think my horse appreciates it any more then when I just give it to him. I was actually just looking for recipes to make regualr horse type cookies such as Stud Muffins, just to cut down on the cost of treats as well as make them a bit healthier. If you only have one or 2 horses and a lot of spare time them this book is fun, but if you have a job, or/& kids and more then a stall or 2 to clean a day, the time it takes for some of these is just not realistic. If you want to get really detailed and impress your horse friends then buy the book, but if your more like me and just looking for cheaper healthier treats, save your money, google horse cookie recipes and go from there.
*this book does however have some interesting suggestions for natural grooming tips*

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Book
I received this book as a gift several years ago and have purchased it as a gift several times, since. There are a lot of good recipes for treats and mashes as well as fly spray recipes, home-made fungus cures, etc. You'll refer to it, often.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall, good
This had some pretty good recipes in it (I recommend Miss Koko's Biscuits), but many were very time-consuming and hard to prepare, like stuffing apples. Also, I found it frustrating that about 70% of the recipes required horse-specific foods like hay cubes, etc. Of course, if you own a horse, this is not a problem. If you want a good, easy, homemade horse treat (besides the ones in the book) that horses love, try mixing:

1 1/2 grated carrots
1 1/2 grated apples
1/2 cup molasses
10 oz. rolled oats
4 oz. wheat flakes

Cook for about one and a half hours at 325 degrees F.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT A FUN BOOK
I watched the author prepare a recipe on TV. On a program called Petsburgh USA hosted by animal planet :o) With the test horse there and watching her create these recipies I was amazed :o) Today I have boughten this bookright here at Amazon.com..My horses will love these, aside from thereregular treats of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and ritz crackers :o)

5-0 out of 5 stars A book to treasure if you have a horse!
This book is great you can finds so many ideas to pamper your horse with. Even though I don't own a horse (yet)all the horses in the barn love taste testing them. Its great for Christmas presents and most of all the recipesare easy and inexpensive, some of the recipes you can eat too! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ecclectic Mix of Light Recipes for Everyday Cooking & Special Occasions
I purchased this book to replace a water-logged 2008 edition. My husband and I have not only been trying to eat healthier, but we've also been trying to save money by cooking at home.Every week I flip through the two books and come up with a variety of recipes to make each night - we've eaten so many new and interesting meals and know we're doing something good for ourselves at the same time.Something I've found helpful is to visit the [...] site to check out reviews of each recipe for tips from other readers.

4-0 out of 5 stars great recipes poorly organized
I love cooking light's recipes, but this cookbook could be organized better, and have more pictures. The recipes are organized by the month the magazine was released rather than by food type or meal type.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Wife Loves Cooking Books
My wife has been ordering, using, and enjoying the recipes in Cooking Light Annual Recipes for years. I can only guess that this will continue with this volume.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cooking Light
Like its predecessors, this cookbook is easy to use.It has a comprehensive index. The recipes are a compilation of the 2009 magazine, so we knew basically what we were getting. It's nice to have everything in one location.

1-0 out of 5 stars VERY POOR customer service. DO NOT recommend this vendor
I bought two Cooking Light cookbooks from this vendor. It said NEW on the description.I was going to give them as gifts, however when they came they were far from new.Pages were folded up within one book. The outside covers of both books were dirty and damaged.I emailed the vendor:FOR SALE WHOLESALE and did not hear anything.I then went to their web site and emailed them and still no answer.I now must go through AMAZON to try and recoupe my money since this vendor apparently does not care to make things right.I would never go back to this vendor for anything. They may have many stars for service, however keep looking at the reviews and those people who were not satisfied have the same complaint I do.Beware!!! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars should be '366 vegan recipies'
I bought this book hoping to find new ideas on dairy-free cooking. While the recipes are dairy free about 95% of them call for tofu.I've read a lot on nutrition and am also concerned about going over board on soy consumption, especially for women. This book would be great for a vegan but if you're just looking for dairy-free then I would recommend 'Totally Dairy-Free Cooking' by Louis Lanza.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes and Vegetarian too!
This book is written from the point of view that after some people eliminate all meat from their diets, they might choose to eliminate dairy also.Since it is written from this strict vegetarian viewpoint, all ofthe recipes are fine for people who have dairy allergies as well. Many ofthe recipes include soy cheese products - if you are milk protein allergicyou can eat some of these products, but not all of them, so be sure to readthe ingredient lists carefully. Some soy cheeses are made with casein orsodium caseinate, which are milk derivatives. This book assumes that youalready know what you are allergic to, if anything, and that you know howto avoid it. Other than the soy cheeses, all other dairy possibilites areeliminated and milk substitutes such as soy, rice and almond milk are usedin their place. This book is full of wonderful recipes that make the mostof non-animal proteins such as tofu, seitan, and tempeh. Although I'm not avegetarian, I was excited to see so many great-sounding recipes thattempted me even though I've never eaten seitan and rarely liked tempeh. Itincludes delicious rich soup recipes and some noodle and pasta dishescontaining a white sauce made with almond or soy milk, something I wasn'tsure was possible until this book. It contains many spicy, creative dishesas well, something not always common to dairy-free or vegetarian cookbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
This was the first dairy-free cookbook I bought when I found out I was allergic to milk proteins. So far, every recipe (over 20) that I've made from this cookbook has been a poor comparison to its dairy equivalent. Myown dairy-free creations were better and indistinguishable from their dairyequivalent.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great selection of easy to make, non-dairy recipes.
It's hard to find to a good non-dairy cookbook.I'm not a vegitarian, I just feel a lot better, and look a lot thinner, when I'm off the dairy. The recipies in this book are all vegan (no animal products of any kind). I haven't tried all of the recipies, but the ones I have, have been tasty, easy to prepare, and for the most part the indgredents are easy to find.Especially yummy is the Baked Spinach with Rasins. The book even includesa desert section, I personally tend to avoid these, not only for caloricreasons, but also because many of them call for margarine (made many fromhydrogenated oils), and my nutritionist has convinced me that hydrogenatedoils are on the same health level as crack. I would highly recomend thisbook, good for beginners thru experts.I find myself "spicingup" some of the recipes, but the the basic recipes are great. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Need more photos
Great recipies.Have tried a couple already. However, was disappointed that there were so few photos in the cookbook.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I returned this as all the recipes call for specific ingredients that are specific Hodgson products. This was very offputing and not quite what I was expecting.

2-0 out of 5 stars Glad I got it from the library
First, I agree with the previous reviewer who stated this cookbook is like a Hodgon product usage manual. Many recipes call for their muffin mixes, gingerbread mix, etc. I live in Oregon and have not seen Hodgson products. Also, the recipes aren't always clear. The Carrot Cake Muffins caught my eye, but it calls for an 8 oz can of pineapple and doesn't note if you should include the juice or not. As far as gluten-free (GF) - most of these recipes just substitute rice flour. Anyone who has tried GF baking knows baked goods made with straight rice flour go right into the garbage - you only make this mistake once. You need a mix of different types of flours to make GF baked goods edible. If you have access to Hodgson's products and aren't buying this for GF recipes, it might work for you. It seemed like some of the recipes came right off the back of their muffin mix boxes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent whole-grains book, with a caviat
I bought this book on first sight, after deciding that I wanted to do more whole-grain baking. I like and very much trust Hodgson Mill products and I thought that this cookbook would be an excellent resource. I was right, to a point.

This cookbook is filled with good recipes for all kinds of baked goods, using whole-grain products produced by Hodgson Mill. This is to be expected since every manufacturer that distributes any kind of recipe always specifies that their product is the one to use. That in itself is not an issue here, but what IS an issue is that many of the recipes contained therein require special boxed mixes. It is one thing to specify a particular brand of flour; it is quite another to require a specialty mix that is manufactured by no one else.

Many of these special box mixes are not readily available on store shelves but require a mail-order purchase. The end result is that many of the recipes in this book are not something that can be thrown together on a whim but require advance planning. Often this kind of planning is not done and as a result many of the recipes likely will go unused.

Now, all of that said, there are a good many recipes in this book that do not require special mixes or mail-order ingredients. Of those that I have tried there have been no duds - each resulting loaf/batch of muffins/etc. has turned out to be excellent with my family disappointed when the last is eaten. In that regard this book has been a huge success.

An interesting aspect of this book is the inclusion of gluten-free recipes. For those with gluten intolerance, this is a blessing and will put great-tasting breads on the table for all. Granted, some of these still require special mixes but this is a small price to pay in such a circumstance.

This cookbook is a good choice for people who like whole-grain breads and are willing to sift through a collection for recipes that do not require specialty mixes. For those with access to those mixes, the value of this collection goes up dramatically.

3-0 out of 5 stars Goof if you're prepared to buy special Hodgson Mill products
This cookbook is fine -- but many of the recipes incorporate specialty Hodgson Mill mixes and other products, and therefore do not readily lend themselves to someone who may not have these items on hand or want to get them. This is a Hodgson Mill product usage manual as much as it is a cookbook. ... Product Description
Many people might imagine that the task of reconstructing the diet of our prehistoric ancestors would be completely impossible. In some ways they are right, but when archaeologists recover the remains of our distant forebears and their tools they also look for clues about their food. The evidence may survive in a variety of different forms: mounds of discarded seashells, for example, or the bones of wild and domestic animals and the remains of plants. So whether the evidence concerns the hunters of the Palaeolithic or the first farmers of the Neolithic or the Celtic chieftains of the late Iron Age, we do have quite a number of clues to help us reconstruct their diet. This book provides a fascinating insight into the foods which were eaten by our prehistoric ancestors and attempts to recreate recipes which are authentic and palatable. There are practical restraints of course - some of the ingredients, like mammoth steaks or rhinoceros joints, are difficult to find in the modern supermarket. There are also other staples that we take for granted today which were not available to our prehistoric forebears - sugar, yeast, spices, vinegar, onions, sugar, yeast, spices, vinegar, onions, tomatoes, potatoes, oranges and lemons to name a few. They did, however, use much more of our wild vegetation than we do now and this is reflected in recipes such as Nettle Puree, Easter Ledge Pudding (using dandelion leaves) and boiled Sea Urchins. Beautifully illustrated with full colour photography throughout, the book provides a unique insight into our culinary prehistory. ... Read more

Product Description
Thirty-two great hero-villains of literature lure the reader into the kitchen to sample their signature recipes. Estérelle Payany shares to-die-for recipes inspired by scoundrels from popular literature. Each chapter opens with an excerpt from the original story and quirky illustrations by Jean-François Martin featuring the criminal and his recipe. The Big Bad Wolf roasts three little pigs in their blankets while Snow White’s stepmother concocts bewitching caramel apples. The Queen of Hearts orders Alice to eat treacle tart while Long John Silver stocks the galley with sea biscuits. And although Shakespeare’s infamous Brutus can toss his Caesar salad in a mere ten minutes, Dracula’s paprika hendl is best when simmered from dusk until dawn. It is sure to be a duel to the end between Patrick Bateman’s truffled roast beef and Tom Ripley’s Venetian lemon chicken, but both can be paired nicely with a simple white bean salad from East of Eden’s Cathy Ames. This spirited collection drawing from fairy tales, literary classics, and contemporary favorites is as entertaining as the recipes are scrumptious (and harmless!). And with the winning ingredients in Recipe for Murder—famous literary thrillers and authentic home-style recipes—it would be a crime to pass up this diabolically scrumptious book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My new favorite!
I was reading another book but set it aside when this arrived in the mail, and haven't been back to it yet.I'm not the sort of person who would read a cookbook, but this is more like a cool encyclopedia of best of the New York Times recipes over the past 150 years, interspersed with interesting historical information, hints from testing, cooking notes, and some reader comments/memories. The author's voice is full of warmth, wit, and sharp, bright intelligence. Her personable approach (as opposed to taking the form of a disengaged editor) conveys care about this momentous project and it is precisely what makes the book really shine. And it's fun to see a recipe that I had clipped from the Times years and years ago, right there in the book--it kind of underscores how great it is!(Plus it may include a footnote that offers a small change that will make it turn out even better!) The 1,600-plus recipes were selected judiciously, sound absolutely wonderful, and cover a huge territory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read. Recipes you know and love plus more
First, for anyone who loves to read a good cookbook, this is wonderful gift. The background provided with the recipes and the tone in which it is given are a real pleasure.Second, for anyone who loves food and making it, this book is a treasure. There are recipes here that i know well from years of devoted clipping and, later, printing from the NY Times but I am also discovering many new ones that sound just great.A thousand recipes, most of them interesting and all with at least the original publication date or some extra tidbit of information! In addition, you can learn about how our tastes have evolved and what a family might eat in the 19th century. When my copy arrived, I was reading a decent novel.Since then I have been happily perusing my new cookbook with the novel all but forgotten. And, oh yeah, occasionally I cook something yummy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Dishes, Priceless Cookbook
This is the type of cookbook I call an armchair cookbook because it can be just as easily enjoyed by simply reading through it as it can be trying out the recipes in the kitchen.

If you were impressed when Julie Powell spent a year of her life trying every one of Julia Child's French recipes, you will be astounded by Amanda Hesser's six-year Herculean task of evaluating and writing about 150 years of New York Times recipes. There's an immense satisfaction that comes from reading thru these recipes, kind of like being a guest invited into Hesser's test kitchen and watching the culinary drama unfold without having to do any of the work or shoulder any of the responsibility.

Clear a space on your cookbook library shelf for The Essential New York Times Cookbook -- this heavy tome is a must-have for anyone who loves reading about food as well as getting creative with it!

5-0 out of 5 stars modern and historic at the same time
I just received my book today, and I'll admit that I've been watching for it since first hearing about the project a few years ago.I love old recipes, and I'm enjoying the historic aspects of this collection. It is quite interesting to see the dates on each recipe. The author's comments and introductions strike the right tone by being warm, down to earth, and helpful.I know I will want to cook lots and lots of the recipes in the book, both the old dishes and the new.Already I've identified the "Salted Caramels" as a perfect completment to after-dinner coffee on Thanksgiving. Now, if only I could decide on a historic punch to start the Thanksgiving holiday... ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good, simple Intro to Bourbon
Fred Thompson's slim hardcover ode to Bourbon is an excellent introduction to those new to this spirit. The book begins with a brief history of this distinctive American spirit and a very short section on bar tools. At the back of the book, there is a measurement conversion chart and a 2-page index. The book is simple, easy to use, fuss-free and non-intimidating.

There are 50 popular recipes in total , of which 5 are food recipes, that serve to enlighten and widen one's taste horizons.

The drink recipes are further divided into 4 categories:
1) The Classics such as Manhattans and Old Fashioned;
2) Updated drinks such as Street Car and Washington Apple;
3) Piping Hot and Icy, such as hot chocolate dream;
4) Bourbon for Crowd, big drinks made in pitchers and punch bowls.

This is an excellent intro to Bourbon for the novice and would make an excellent gift.Aficionados should look elsewhere as there isn't anything new in here for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good primer on Bourbon and Tennessee Whiskey
This book is a decent primer on Kentucky Bourbon and its cousin Tennessee Whiskey. There is an interesting prologue on the hazy origins of Bourbon and a rundown on what makes Bourbon and Tennessee Whiskey what it is.This is followed by the 50 drink recipes mentioned in the title.

The book starts with the basic offerings like an Old Fashioned and Manhattan, but also includes quite a few drinks I had heard of but not tried in quite some time (Lynchburg Lemonade) or was not aware of at all (Bourbon Russian and Hot Buttered Bourbon). There are also a few food recipes in the rear of the book such as Bourbon Balls (a different take on Rum Balls) - but I have to admit that I wish this chapter was a bit longer.

This book is a good addition to the library for a Bourbon and Tennessee Whiskey connoisseur.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mini-book format leaves aficionados thirsty for more
The Harvard Common Press developed this 50-recipe series so, in fairness, Fred Thompson isn't solely to blame for serving a watered down effort. The series' artificial constraints - each 96-page mini-book measures 5 ½ x 8 ¾ and contains 50 recipes - constrains the narrative.

Thompson dedicates the book to his father: "In memory of my Dad, E.M. "Tommy" Thompson, who loved his Jack Daniel's Old No. 7. I miss you." There are subtle hints of Thompson's personality in the introduction and first chapter (Bourbon Basics) before the book follows a paint-by-numbers format.

As for the recipes, there a mishmash of classics and fruity variations that are better suited for a sorority cocktail book. Take for example the "Slap and Tickle" recipe (on page 46) that calls for drowning an ounce of bourbon in a sticky stew of brandy, Southern Comfort, vodka, ruby red grapefruit juice, pineapple juice, orange juice and grenadine.

"Think of this as a Deep South-Long Island Iced tea..." Thompson writes. So, why not save it for a book titled, "Southern Cocktails" and use a cover photo with a Slap and Tickle complete with a cocktail umbrella garnish? (BTW: The cover photo is of an Old Fashioned, with maraschino cherry, orange slice and ice cubes.)

Thompson's a Southern boy and constantly reminds us by dropping clues like "highfalutin," "ladies' luncheon," and "mint julep." The book has the makings of a great drinking game. Take a sip every time Thompson name-drops a southern state or icon.

How can I describe the eagerness and ensuing frustration this book caused? Imagine nursing bourbon on the rocks in your regular hangout, sitting at the end of the bar, close enough to trade rumors with the bartender while eyeing the door for new faces. An attractive woman opens the door, strides to the closest stool and lights a smile that stops the bartender in midsentence. "I want to buy her a drink," you tell him. He nods and turns. You watch as he delivers the message. She flashes another smile. Before the bartender can fill her cocktail glass, a man enters the bar, walks up behind her and leans down, kissing her on the cheek.

And just like that, the ride is over.

Thompson authored three other books in this series: Iced Tea, Lemonade and Hot Chocolate: 50 Heavenly Cups of Comfort. Like the other mini-books, Bourbon is designed to look good on a coffee table. However, it will disappoint aficionados and is unlikely to attract people who prefer their drinks with a cocktail umbrella garnish.

Rating: two stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fit my tastes
Unlike many of the reviewers of this book I am at most a light drinker.A glass of wine a couple of nights a week, the occasional mixed drink with company. As such I found this book to be right on the money. The drink recipes were by and large fairly appetizing, not overpowering in either their sweetness or in their bourbon flavor (for those of you who are not straight bourbon lovers). Moreover I thought the recipes that involved cooking with Bourbon were tasty and well balanced, although their were fewer than I would have liked. All in all I thought this was a decent cookbook.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bourbon details
A very basic, but useful guide towards the enhanced enjoyment of bourbon. Not very technical. ... Read more
