Product Description
This volume deals with theodicy as a subject-matter for religious education. in order to enable people to reflect on the theodicy issue, to deal with their religious doubts and perhaps even to cope with suffering, it is very important that religious education is attentative to the problem of evil. But is it possible to "learn" theodicy? And, if so, what does "learning" mean in this respect? What kind of aims and objectives are desirable and attainable here? These theoretical issues are addressed in the first part of this book. The second part reports on empirical research conducted on the effects of an experimental theodicy course designed for third grade students of lower level secondary schools. As the research findings indicate, it is indeed possible to "learn" something about theodicy. ... Read more

Product Description
British Christianity was adapted and modified in colonial environments and helped to shape a growing sense of national identity in Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific. This chronologically arranged index will identify for scholars documentary sources of the Archbishops of Canterbury and the Anglican Church relevant to Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, and the other Pacific islands and held in the Lambeth Palace Library's archives. In the 1860s, Archbishops of Canterbury inherited responsibility from the Colonial Office for selecting and nominating colonial bishops. By the turn of the twentieth century, archbishops had become confidantes, counselors, and advisers to bishops overseas. Although the papers and correspondence primarily reflect the ecclesiastical life, they also reflect the social, economic, and political atmosphere of the time, and underscore how vital religious institutions were to the colonial communities' developing sense of unity. The papers' contents are diverse and include, among other topics, information about Aborigines, Australian church and community life, women's roles, immigration issues, imperialism, Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States, and race relations. ... The entries are grouped into 151 categories, and within each category entries are listed in chronological order. The detailed indexes make this catalogue a convenient and essential tool for researchers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource for English Bible Version Study
I am actively involved in studying English Bible versions and have been for about 15 years.I am currently working on a book that will probably be called "The Encyclopedia of English Bible Versions."

This book is the most complete listing of English Bible versions that I have found.I have, of course, Herbert's "Historical Catalogue of Printed Bibles," Hills' "English Bible in America" and many others. But Chamberlin's book is more complete, more accurate and more helpful than any of those.

It lists more unique versions than any other work.It is also very helpful if you are researching a particular book of the Bible. He has listed every version that he has found whether it is in a commentary, magazine, or a book.

The cost of this book is high and that kept me from buying for quite some time. Now that I've gotten it I must say it is worth the investment. There simply is no other book that covers as many versions as this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Reference
Chamberlin's Catalogue of English Bible translations is the most complete bibliography of English Bible translations ever complied anywhere! Importantly, it contains much information about each translation, often quoting from the translation itself. Included is the publication data along with a complete publication history. If the translation includes only parts of the Bible, the listing includes the contents. Also, the annotations are very numerous. Some translations contain the apocrypha and the apocryphal books, and this is noted. The listings also often include some information about the translator. Some versions are not actually translations because they are not original, but are modifications of the King James Version, and if this it the case, this fact is noted. This 899 page work also has a 41 page, double column comprehensive index. It contains 43 additional pages of excellent preface material, notes, etc. This work is an indispensable reference for all Bible scholars, Bible translators, Bible collectors, Bible historians, and dealers in rare books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Important studies on the translation of biblical books
This volume contains two books on the Aramaic translation from the Hebrew of the biblical prophets. According to tradition, some of the biblical books of the prophets were composed by a second century rabbi, Jonathan ben Uzziel, a contention that is rejected by some modern scholars. The translation was composed because most of the common people of the early part of the first millenium did not speak or read Hebrew, so the Bible was translated into their language, Aramaic.

However, the translators did not render the text literally. They made changes for many reasons. The three scholars address these changes in the two books. They analyze what they see as allusions to halakhah, Jewish law, historical and geographical changes, theological insertions designed to teach lessons, and other exegesis. The books also contain extensive discussions on the historical background of the translation.

Anyone interested in the meaning of the Bible as it was understood in ancient times will want to read this very important scholarly study.

Product Description
Traditional interpretations in both Judaism and Christianity argue that the "Akedah" presents not only an ethical question but also an ethical reply. But for the intervention of the angel, Abraham would have killed his son. Obedience to God take precedence over morality as humanly conceived. Yet, the angel of YHWH that appears to Abraham is a later addition to the text; thus, in the original narrative Abraham actually disobeys the divine command to slay his son, and sacrifices a ram instead. The first part of the book shows how the version of the narrative did not contain the angelic figure. The second part of the book re-examines various religious interpretations of the text to show that exegetes such as Maimonides and his followers did point out Abraham's disobedience. According to these writers the esoteric layer of the story in fact declares that disobedience to God's command was Abraham's true affirmation of faith. In the third part of the book, Boehm re-opens the philosophical debate between Kant and Kierkegaard. Boehm concludes the book by contending that the monotheistic model of faith presented by Abraham was actually a model of disobedience. ... Read more

Product Description
This work offers a systematic description of the highly interesting mystical doctrine of one of the most influential thinkers in Jewish mysticism. Two hundred years since Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav's demise, his philosophical writings and literary creation remain lively and provocative materials in both Jewish culture and the New-Age movement. Key elements of Rabbi Nachman's magic and magnetic force are illuminated in this research, which presents Bratslavian mysticism as a unique link in the history of Jewish mysticism. The mystical worldview is the axis of this book, but its branches stretch out to key issues in the Bratslavian world such as belief and imagination, dreams and the land of Israel, melodies and song. The Robert and Arlene Kogod Library of Judaic Studies publishes new research which provides new directions for modern Jewish thought and life and which serves to enhance the quality of dialogue between classical sources and the modern world. This book series reflects the mission of the Shalom Hartman Institute, a pluralistic research and leadership institute, at the forefront of Jewish thought and education. It empowers scholars, rabbis, educators and layleaders to develop new and diverse voices within the tradition, laying foundations for the future of Jewish life in Israel and around the world. ... Product Description

This collection of ten essays constitutes the proceedings of a two-day conference held at Harvard in October 2007. The conference focused on three medieval manuscripts of Ambrosian chant owned by Houghton Library. The Ambrosian liturgy and its music, practiced in and around medieval Milan, were rare regional survivors of the Catholic Church’s attempt to adopt a universal Roman liturgy and the chant now known as Gregorian. Two of the manuscripts under scrutiny had been recently acquired (one perhaps the oldest surviving source of Ambrosian music), and the third manuscript, long held among the Library’s collections of illuminated manuscripts, had been newly identified as Ambrosian.

The generously illustrated essays gathered here represent the work of established experts and younger scholars. Together they explore the manuscripts as physical objects and place them in their urban and historical contexts, as well as in the musical and ecclesiastical context of Milan, Italy, and medieval Europe.

Product Description

The Murthly Hours consists of two parts:a book of hours of the end of the thirteenth century preceded by twenty-three slightly earlier miniatures of Old and New Testament scenes surviving from another book, probably a psalter. It is therefore one of the earliest books of hours, written before the greater standardization of text and decoration during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The book was a special commission and reflects the interests and devotions of its first owner, a lady apparently from the Worcester area whose portrait appears in one of the initials. The choice of feasts in the calendar and the choice of saints invoked in the litany reflects the owner's taste. They show how the book was used and can tell us something about secular devotions and literacy among the aristocracy in England and the West of Scotland in the later Middle Ages. The book also contains the second oldest surviving pieces of Gaelic which can be said with certainty to have been written in Scotland rather than in Ireland. They were written phonetically by someone not trained to write Gaelic and one piece has been identified as a form of charm.

John Higgitt recounts the provenance of this magnificent work of medieval art and its recent rediscovery and purchase by the National Library of Scotland. He discusses the writing, decoration, and style of illumination and the particular influence of the Paris school on the manuscript artists. The author presents the first interpretive study which will be of interest to historians of art, liturgy, and medieval literacy. ... Product Description
More than 10 years ago, South African State president F. W. de Klerk announced to the all-white House of Assembly in Cape Town that Nelson Mandela would be released from prison and that the African National Congress would be unbanned-actions that began the process of ending apartheid. This book recounts discussions, controversies, and impressions that shaped the key economic and ideological issues facing all South Africans in 1991 and after. Although many remember apartheid as a system of racial discrimination, it has almost been forgotten that the basis of apartheid was enforcing the color bar through the expropriation of land, forced relocation, and disenfranchisement through the construction of dictatorial statelets. What is more, apartheid was based on deep religious convictions accepted tacitly by nearly all the mainstream churches in the country. This study explores the mechanisms by which land relations shaped South African culture. It takes the churches in South Africa as microcosms of South African apartheid society and applies the analysis of "church culture" to reach a definition of "apartheid culture." This culture continues to shape South African society, and more than a decadelater the land problem is just as urgent as it was in 1991. ... Read more
