This book is great, was received brand new like i asked, and timing was spot on. well. not quite, but just 1 day later than i anticipated, which is pretty damn good. given the fact that amazon cannot read minds of brilliant men. like me. if anyone's buying this because it is a required text for school than...well good luck. if anyone's buying this for pleasure it's excellent. and detailed. and high five me when you see me walking down the street for writing an awesome review :D thanks ebay!

Good buy
The book came well packaged and in great condition.

Some writing on the pages of chicken scratch hand-writing.

That aside, the pricing was fair for what I bought rather than going through my colleges bookstore which up-charged an extra $30 for a used book like this one.

Great for Art History Classes and for Personal Reference Use
I used this book for an art history course and now much later am rereading sections of it to decide what art works I will see on a trip to Florence and Venice.It covers the origins and periods of the Italian Renaissance up to 1600.The descriptions of art works are lengthy and detailed-needed for a class-and useful for learning another way to look at art when you are not an artist. The course and the book made me see this period of art as more than just a time of Madonna pictures.Works by the great artists of the time are covered as well as lesser known but interesting artists, architects, sculptors and leading figures of that period.It is a greatreference book for artist and art lover alike.The guide books mention many of the artists, churches and other buildings covered in this book, but the book has details that can help a traveler decide what to see if time does not allow seeing everything.Remember that it is about Italy only and not other countries that later experienced the Renaissance.

Of 981 illustrations only 135 in color
Illustrating accurately visual art in its presentation and analysis makes sense. Less than 14 % of all illustrations being in color seems somehow disappointing. Otherwise, the book is exquisite including its beautiful printing and bounding. All the illustrations occupy approx. a half of the 696 pages, but the text is what counts. Maps of the centers of Rome, Florence and Venice on the inside of the front cover and on the flyleaf show many important landmarks, but architecture appears to be a bit underrepresented.

This book absolutely transformed my recent trip to Florence. It far
outshines every other book I've read re: Renaissance art. I've been
traveling to Italy for years and am passionate about the period. I learned
an enormous amount not only about the rich artworks themselves, but also
the context in which they were created. How I wish this book had been
written years ago. A very intelligently written and accessible book, that
both scholars and travelers, armchair and otherwise will find enriching.

I needed this book for my college Ren. Art class and our bookstore wasn't getting it in on time. PLUS they were ONLY selling it for $80.00!! I have always had wonderful results with amazon and trust their speedy delivery.
The books information is extremely indepth with wonderful colored pictures to go along with our professors lectures. I've developed a desire to see Florence and the Or San Michele there. If someone were to ask me about it 2 months ago, i would have asked them to repeat themselves. But indepth on monuments, paintings, cities and regions all over the country and throughout the 12th- 16th centuries.

It's an OK book
I was hoping for more. The book is awkward to hold because of the drawer. It's great that they included a little light box, but it didn't need the drawer, it could have been tucked into a slit on a page like some other extras in this book. The pop-ups are mostly good - though several do not line up properly and I had to force them into position so that they wouldn't tear or bend when changing pages.

The miniature art is fantastic. There is A LOT of information in this book as well. I haven't finished reading it all yet! I like that about this book. So often the story is fluff or almost non-existent in a book like this. But there is so much to read, it's almost like a real art lesson! ... Read more

I have bought this book mostly for the images, and unfortunately all the images are printed with this yellowish colour which make the reproductions far from their originals. I guess it's still ok for this price.

This is an excellent publication, which will excite the layman and thestudent equally. The scholarship is superb and the illustrations are exquisite.
Included are both familiar and new items integrating architecture, painting and sculpture of this most exciting period of human creativity.
Probably for the first time in a single, general introductory publication we have a book that does justice to the arts of the period, in full colour. There is much to recommend in the book which without going into great depth provides up-to-date scholarship covering the entire period of the Italian Renaissance.
There is no other book available in English to match this work, and it maintains the quality of other Konemann publications covering the Gothic, Romanesque, Baroque, Neoclassical & Romantic Periods in European Art and Architecture.
Architects should be aware that while there are some building plansin the books they are not designed to be strict architectural books and serve only to generally introduce the buildings in their time and context.
Finally for such fine large format, full colour publications the prices are unbelievably economical. Buy them all if you have even passing interest in these eras of art, you will not regret it. ... Read more

A wonderful overview.
This is a very nice looking book that not only provides context about the Harlem Renaissance and the proliferation of Black artists during the 20's and 30's, but it also includes many reproductions of some of the period's most representative works. From the cover photo which is a copy William Johnson's "Boy in a Vest," to the James VanDerZee's striking black and white photography, to the sculptures of Meta Warwick, the reader is treated to many examples of the visual arts. There are also essays and poems by the Countee Cullen and other writers of the time. This is a good introduction to the period and is suitable for children and young adults. And old adults too for that matter!

A Classic Reference Book
I think that I am like many people in that my knowledge of the Renaissance Art of Northern Europe comes from a few lectures in a college art history survey course.A few iconic images from the likes of Bosch, Holbein,Durer and Breugel are all that come to mind.I knew the era was important but the details were sketchy.

"Northern Renaissace Art" is everything you could want to deepen your knowledge of this important period of history.The book is 750 pages long and has over 680 illustration of which 250 are in beautifully reproduced color.James Snyder does an excellent job of explaining why those iconic paintings that everyone knows are great and deserve to be remembered 500 years after they were painted.More importantly, Snyder takes those second tier masters out of obscurity and elevates them to their proper place in history.Before reading this book, I had never heard of such masters as Jan Gossaert, Jean Fouquet and Petrus Christus. It was a exciting to get know their work. By no means is "Northern Rensaissace Art" a reasonably priced book.But it is the type of book that will give you great pleasure for many years.

Art historian must have!
Just buy it.You won't be sorry.Great images and lots of informative discussion of imagery.

The Other Half of the Renaissance
Books on the Renaissance can be quite confusing to non-specialists. For example, Shakespeare classes in English schools discuss him as a Renaissance writer. Yet art teachers describe his near contemporary, Rubens, as the quintessential Baroque artist!
So exactly what does Northern Renaissance Art cover? Is it an age that can be separated, marked out and surveyed by political or religious activities? And by northern what is meant? Is Switzerland the home of northern art? Can it be made in Italy? And what makes it significant and different from the universally recognized world of Italian Renaissance Art, where the term 'art' is always capitalized?
Well, the truth lies pretty much with all of the above. As Snyder shows, several distinct cultures fall into this very large historical category. If you're buying this book as a student for a class, I can only hope you have more than one semester to give to the material. Northern Renaissance Art covers an enormous time period and many countries. It approaches in diversity the far better known works and ideas of the Italian Renaissance. No one seriously discusses the Italian Renaissance in a single semester - the material is taught in a series of classes. The same limitations and requirements should apply to teaching the Northern Renaissance. Art history today no longer focuses on aesthetic questions of style; as a result a student faces a lifetime's study of a period's culture and history.
However, there are some basics. If one word could define what separates the two worlds of the Italian and Northern Renaissance - that word would have to be naturalism. Northern European artists revel in achievements of realism that far surpass the Italians, who, while perfectly capable of such stylistic work, prefer a more intellectually formalized approach. Indeed, Michelangelo dismissed northern artist's attention to nature and care for photographic details as incidental, and excessively ephemeral, when contrasted to his Italian art which used images for projecting deeper spiritual values. The public, however, was delighted with the landscapes, and their non-abstract openness. Many artists from the north specialized in landscape, and it became a manner so associated with them that it was not uncommon for Italian painters to hire Northern artists to fill in the 'less important' landscape backgrounds of their larger canvases.
The Italian Renaissance differed also in that it was singularly connected to the revival and reappreciation of ancient 'pagan' works of art. These antiquities provided a challenge, as well as a reawakening, for the artists and thinkers of Italy. In the north artists did not have at hand magnificent works of ancient architecture or sculpture: as a result intellectual challenges were quite different; though initially tied to the Italian thinking, the northern artists more and more shifted focus onto their own immediate world. As the fifteenth century closed they became attuned to newer discoveries from the exploration of new (not ancient)worlds by sea, and the individuals emancipation brought about through the beginnings of Protestant thought. For moderns this means that the Northern Renaissance often appears closer to us and our own post photographic record of the world. The artist's sense of intimacy with nature seems little different than what most of us know as landscape art.Their religious works also convey a striking ease with space less contrived than our eyes find the representation of space in most Italian painting of the same era. All made the more attractive for being so accessible. Some of this difference marks profound religious and philosophical differences - northern art has about it some of the fervor of emancipation - there is here a reflection of the Armana naturalism revolting against the old art of a more dogmatic less individualistic Egypt. Eventually Italian artists would adapt to this new naturalism, especially in the north of Italy in Venice, in the works of Bellini, Giorgione, and Titian.
This book introduces the reader to the early Flemish master painters, such as Van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden, the later great German artists, such as Durer and Holbein and Grunewald, and the strange inner universe of Bosch. Topping off the age are the works of one of the grandest of all humanists, Pieter Bruegel the elder. And these are just some of the great painters! There remains a wealth of sculpture and architecture, drawing and craft work. Moreover, the Northern Renaissance is also an artistic universe filled with fresh new theories and a milieu profoundly effected by the great religious upheaval of the Reformation.
Snyder gives as good an overview of so much material as one could hope for - his work replete with an enormous number of images, many of which have for nearly half a millenium been accepted as iconic. The text treats the material with a practised consideration, born of many years study. However; the impetus of the book is to direct the reader further afield, and this is indisputably the author's greatest achievement and the point of such a survey work. The real jewels for readers will be enlarging these discoveries by travel and on site awareness, these efforts made more satisfying through study of specific texts directed at the new artists whose work transforms your view of what the Renaissance was.

A very interesting book if you are brushing up on Italian Art and paintings.

Dense and anachronistic
I think the reader will get lost here and possibly come away with a misapprehension about the times unless they have a fairly strong background in European history.Overall, it was a bit puzzling.

You really have to read this book critically because some parts are bizarre.I remember at one point she describes artists as being involved in several businesses, with the aim of providing for their retirement.While in individual cases, it is likely true that successful artists owned rental property and so forth, but "providing for retirement" certainly sounds like an anachronism.It's not immediately clear what is meant by "retirement" in a time when several generations of a family might live in the same house, and work work together in the same artists' workshop.

This is a beautiful and stirring book depicting point by point the current exhibition at the Museum of Art.I have been to the exhibit
and this wonderful volume describes in marvelous detail the subject matter of art and love in Renaissance Italy.

I traveled recently to Italy and explored and researched the masters decribed in this book and it thrills me to be able to own in one volume the pictures and the material associated with this particular theme.

Art and Love in Renaissance Italy
Having recently co-authored a novel that focuses on art and love in Renaissance Italy, and on the intimate lives of the women who lived in it, I was delighted to see the magnificent catalogue published to accompany the Metropolitan Museum exhibition on Art and Love in Renaissance Italy.Lavishly illustrated with works in a variety of media, from painting to ceramic vessels to wooden birth trays, the catalogue offers proof of the importance of artwork in the daily life of Renaissance society. The well-written and detailed essays discuss the place of imagery in all stages of Renaissance marriage, from courtship, to engagement, to childbirth. Along with the pageantry and celebration that accompanied these events for the well-to-do, came a dazzling array of jewelry, portraits, and costume, as well as specific functional but gorgeously decorated items such as cassone (marriage chests), bowls for washing the newborn, engagement rings for the anellamento, and dishware for new mothers. Drawing on mythology, religious imagery and the specific iconography of Renaissance Italy, the works depicted in the exhibit and painstakingly researched in the catalogue essays offer a window into the intimate lives of the patrons who commissioned and displayed them. For those whose curiosity about the love life and childbirth practices of Renaissance Italy are not fully sated by the exhibit, I strongly recommend The Miracles of Prato (William Morrow), forthcoming this January. The novel features just the kind of objects displayed in the exhibit, and follows the life of Fra Filippo Lippi, whose Portrait of a Woman and Man at a Casement Window is truly one of the highlights of the show.

Renaissance Italy is often characterized as a place of unusual tolerance and privilege toward Jews. Unlike England, France, Germany, Spain, and Portugal, the princely courts of early modern Italy, particularly Urbino, Mantua, and Ferrara, offered economic and social prosperity to Jews. When anti-Jewish hostilities created civic tumult in this region, secular authorities promptly contained the violence.

Yet this written record tells only one part of the story. Pictures tell another. In The Jew in the Art of the Italian Renaissance, Dana E. Katz reveals how Renaissance paintings and sculpture became part of a policy of tolerance that deflected violence to a symbolic status. While rulers upheld toleration legislation governing Christian-Jewish relations, they simultaneously supported artistic commissions that perpetuated violence against Jews. The economic benefits Jewish toleration supplied never outweighed the animosity toward Jews' participation in the Christian community.

Katz examines how particular forms of visual representation were used to punish Jews symbolically for alleged crimes against Christianity, including host desecration, deicide, and ritual murder. The production of such imagery testifies to the distinctive Jewry policies employed in the northern Italian princedoms, republican Florence, and imperial Trent. The book provides new insights into famous masterworks by Andrea Mantegna, Paolo Uccello, and others, placing these paintings within a larger discourse that incorporates noncanonical, provincial works of art.
