4-0 out of 5 stars Good general care book on turtle and tortoise.
This little book has plenty of excellent information and a stunning collection of pictures. I did see some small errors; for instance the identification captions for the pictures of the Yellow-margined box turtle and Malayan box turtle are reversed (pp. 56-57.) Overall, a fine addition to your collection of turtle books. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great for Sixth-graders...?
I found this book woefully lacking substance and any real information as to the keeping of cichlids. I finished reading it in under an hour, easily (probably closer to 40 minutes). Although an attractive book, its reading level would probably be more appropriate to a child approximately twelve years of age. A very basic beginners book.

Unfortunately, there appears to be a dearth of good, informative books on keeping cichlids (I was unable to find any other on Amazon rated as highly as this one).

5-0 out of 5 stars From A Teacher
From a Teacher. . .

Claudia Dickinson's new book, the "Aquarium Care of Cichlids" is a great fish and learning resource for any new or veteran teacher, or simply for a student of cichlids, not only because it is so accurate and informative, but because of how it is written. The book understands teaching in that the pages are "interactive" and the chapters reflect an important teaching flow.
The pages are "interactive" in design as they are filled with engaging images framed with different geometric shapes that captures the eye and draws you into the critical information provided in a short format and then expanded on throughout the chapter's pages. The engagement goes further by providing the reader, both young and old, with expert knowledge and summary pages for emphasis and clarity.
The book is ideal for learning because of its logical flow that builds upon itself.First, the books starts with the critical question, "Why Cichlids," and then advances the reader Chapter by Chapter through background information, preparations to be accomplished, and then a number of critical care chapters. This emphasis on learning as you read and then putting the animals first is thoroughly reinforced next through a new important but action oriented question, "Which Cichlid is Best for Me?" The final chapter provides the "real" world connections that can be used by a veteran or newcomer to take their new-found knowledge to ever increasing levels of understanding. For me, as well as for my students, the book is as much a resource as a guide for thinking about the "Aquarium Care of Cichlids."If you have a cichlid tank at home, or in a classroom, this book should be close by for all to be taught about what they are seeing each day in their designed aquatic habitat. The book puts fish and learning first, and this fact makes the book invaluable. I recommend this book highly and without reservation based on my 35 years of teaching experience, work with teachers as a professor at Johns Hopkins University and the co-author of a number of curriculums.

5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone with an interest in cichlids
This book is written by the consumate enthusiast. There is not a chapter that does not contain valuable and practical information on this outstanding family of fishes. Not only does the author enlighten you, she inspires you, or perhaps I should say she allows these fascinating fishes to inspire you. Cichlids are freshwater fish known for their intelligence and the wonderful parental care of their fry. No one has ever conveyed their amazing qualities better than Claudia Dickinson.I have been keeping aquarium fish for over 40 years, and have read many aquarium books (well over a hundred). I can assure potential buyers that this is must read for anyone interested in cichlids. It has a permanent place in my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Steps to success with cichlids
Those of us in-the-know have been anxiously awaiting the debut of Aquarium Care of Cichlids, by Claudia Dickinson. It has fulfilled our expectations, and then some! The author is an extremely experienced and knowledgeable aquarist. She shares all of that with her readers, along with her effervescent enthusiasm. On one page she becomes an historian, on another a scientist, and on many others she is a hobbyist just like you or me.Her writing style is friendly without being flippant!
There are eight chapters simply overflowing with advice and information. It is published by T.F.H., and it is also part of the Animal Planet Pet Care Library; "Expertly written, these user-friendly guides are bound to delight the entire family."
Even though this is Ms. Dickinson's first book, she is far from a beginning author. She has won multiple awards for the countless articles she has written for such publications as Tropical Fish Hobbyist, Cichlid News, Buntbarsche Bulletin, and Modern Aquarium, to name but a few.
To quote Ms. Dickinson: "If reading this book sets you on the road to success with your first cichlid aquarium, these pages will have served their purpose well."Ultimately, YOUR review will be the most telling!

4-0 out of 5 stars Requisite Reading
These 3 volumes should be on every herpetoculturist's bookshelf. These are not treatises on the complete array of reptiles but in depth essays on particular topics applicable to any.

The downside - many typos, grammatical and 'flow' errors.
The upside - An incredible bibliography of references.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite complete!
This three-volume, behemoth of a bible on reptile care and medicine covers almost any topic you can think of or might encounter, either as a herpetoculturist, veterinary nurse or veterinarian.

Although some topics lack detail, this is understandable considering the sheer size of the books and the vast amount of subjects that are touched. Sometimes a little extra research will be needed if you want to know more, but for most purposes, this set is more than adequate.

The only deterrant is its price (and maybe its weight!), however it is well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Herpetological Sets Available
This is wonderfully edited 3 volume set which is one of the best and most complete series on reptiles available.Even when compared to veterinary texts, which often only focus in on one aspect of biology, the Ackerman, et. al stands heads and shoulders above them as a resource tool.Having purchased this set two years ago, I only have one regret and that is having not bought this sooner.Being an amateur herpetologists for the past twenty-two years, I find this to be a resource that is always helpful.

Volume One - Biology of Reptiles = This is a great overview of the biology and physiology of the world's reptiles. This volume focuses mainly on the more "popular" reptiles seen in captivity, but most of this data can be applied to other species as well. The anatomical charts and dissection photos are also very useful in knowing the locations of important structures (very helpful for Vol.3) and anatomical landmarks.

Volume Two - The Husbandry of Reptiles = WOW! This volume is worth the price of admission alone - I have not seen anything as thorough as this for the captive care of any reptile species let alone an entire phyla.Housing, diet, breeding, light spectrums (species specific), hibernation - its all in here and in detail.

Volume Three - The Healthcare of Reptiles = This is the volume that sold me on the entire set. This covers many ailments and pathogens that can affect reptile species.Symptoms, preventive measures, and medications (with dosages) are plotted out in charts and diagrams; color photos of pathological conditions and treatment are given; dietary supplements; surgical and necropsy protocols and procedures are also included.

All three volumes are filled with full color photographs and plenty of charts and text.I have seen this set quoted at many different prices and I suggest you shop around be it online or at a herp store...

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful reference
This text proves useful in understanding the physiological make-up of herps in volume 1.The volume on husbandry (vol.2) is weak if you are looking for species specific information or in-depth information regarding vivarium set up.The real strength of the work lies in the final volume on discussing thehealth care of reptiles. The Ackerman and Ackerman work does not eclipse Frye's _Reptile Care_ but it does give more recent clinical applications on the medical care of your herps than its predecessor.Overall, it is a wise investment for both hobbyists and professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any serious Herper
This set of three volumes are wonderfully illustrator and well written. Each book is geared to a different aspect of reptiles care. The first covers in great detail the biology of all reptiles species. They documentand show detailed photos of each species anatomy so that you willunderstand how a reptile functions. In the husbandry volume, they covereverything from proper housing to diet with examples and photos of what tolook for if something is incorrect and the reptile is ill.I was veryimpressed with the health care one.It was so well done that I felt my vetcould do a procedure detailed in it (that they might not have dealt withyet in their practice) with ease. This set is a must for anyone serious inthe study and raising of any reptile. ... Read more

I always love ordering through Amazon because the items arrive quickly and exactly as described. Great seller- got an A on the paper. Thank you.

3-0 out of 5 stars unfortunately lacking in info.
This had the potential to be a wonderful book, but it is lacking in the information that you would expect to get in the books of this series. The diseases and disorders section is esentially non-existant and the specificcare of the different species is far too generalized and totally lacksdetail. It is a very good book for beginners or those looking for overviewsof the major species and their care, but that is about it.Still waitingfor the Tortoise Manual - which is long overdue.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for your turtle library

I have used this book extensively to help me care for several species oftortoises, Leopards, Sulcatas, Redfoot and Yellowfoots. The content ishighly accurate and every tortoise keeper should use this book as his"bible" of care specs.

4-0 out of 5 stars His reach exceeded his grasp, but it is still a good book
The section on montiors and tegus is REALLY insufficient. He discusses only the Nile and Water monitors, but there are some 12 or 13 species available. In fact, he tries to dissuade you from owning a monitor, whenthey are great animals if you know what your doing. The section onvenomous snakes was rather lacking, but that is the norm. Also, some ofthe information was somewhat dated, but nothing major enough to cause realconcern.HE got the diets, temps. and other basics for most of thespecies. However, the amphibian section wasn't all that great. It didn'tcover frogs now avialable, and the care was too bare, sometimes notincluding temperatures or other essentials. This book can be helpful ifyou've got no knowledge, but youre still much better off buying a morespecific book (i.e one that covers just lizards, or just snakes).Hisreach exceeded his grasp here. But, it can help, and has a few good spots. I reccomend buying it, but don't rely on it as the best care source outthere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
It is a must buy for beginners. It contains a shallow overview of many species. Whileit does not go into too much depth on any one species, it does give the absolute bare bones for most- cage size, temps, diet, ect.The section an montiros and teiieds is very lacking though. He seems tothink that the average hobbyist should even consider these aniamls. That isthe books one really big flaw.

4-0 out of 5 stars Desperately seeking amphibs...
This was a great, informative book. No complaints about the information that it held.... however, I was specifically seeking information about amphibians. In view of this, I have to say I was disappointed in the smallamount of info i could find on my amphibs. I'd say it was 75-80% reptileinfo... disappointing especially when it wasn't a large book to begin with.Reptile owners: Buy this book! Amphibian owners: find an amphibian book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for starters
This book is great it covers every thing for every reptile even feeding instructions.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must !!!

This book is like a more extensive version of "Lizards: A complete pet owners manual" by Harald Jes.R.D. Bartlett and Patricia Bartlett have written this exhaustive (178 pages) book.It must be great fun in the house of this couple, who seem to have a true love affair with lizards.Like "Lizards," it contains many photographs and does a great job detailing the basics of lizard care for pet owners. The difference is this book goes into a lot more detail.

Sometimes I find that although there is a lot of good information on the internet, if you really want to learn something, you have to do it the old-fashioned way: read a book.I consider this book the definitive reference guide to raising, breeding, and understanding lizards. This book is a wonderful guide for Herpetoculturists (which the authors teach us are distinct from Herpetologists).

A wonderfully written and illustrated guide for the care of Lizards. A great read and very informational. A must have for the new ones to reptile keeping.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're getting into reptiles, this is a good place to start.
People planning on keeping lizards as pets should have this book. It gives you the general needs of reptiles and then delves deeper into the needs of desert, forest, tropical, and semi-aquatic species, from caging requirements and decorations, to foods and lighting.

2-0 out of 5 stars Broad in scope...
but mixed in quality. This book is possibly very helpful if you're new to lizards and are looking for an overview on some species, just to see what's interesting. However, although the bulk of the care is accurate, there are parts I disagree with; as another reviewer noted, they state you can put four leopard geckos in a ten gallon tank, which is unreal; I'd say maybe 2 in a ten gallon. Lots of the cage sizes they mention seem off, one way or the other, but the novice, at whom this book is aimed, won't know that, because they lack experince.

As far as general care goes, I think they got most of the diets right, as well as general temperatures, etc. but there is no real in depth guide to care; breeding info, or really good specific information is scarce. Also, it seems some of thier species are out of date, by which I mean, many formerly common but now harder to come by species (which again, the novice likely won't find) are covered, whereas many now common species aren't.I can't really reccomend this book; look at online dealers (easy to find) and pet stores to figure what lizards appeal to you, and just go ahead and do more specific research; there are books on most particular species common to the trade, as well as mailing list, etc. where you can get equally good or better info, of a greater depth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't use it as your ONLY book
I was expecting something a little more in depth. The Uromastyx section should really not be trusted. I reccomend joining a mailing list for your particular species. ... Read more
