5-0 out of 5 stars MUST READ for amphibian enthusiasts
This is an outstanding little guide book for the salamander and newt fancier -- perhaps the best and most up-to-date that I have yet seen! Salamanders and newts can be hardy and rewarding terrarium inhabitants, provided that certain critical requirements are met, particularly in regard to providing the proper substrate, hiding places, cool temperatures, etc. The author provides many helpful suggestions regarding these factors that I am certain would be quite helpful to both beginning and advanced hobbyists.

All the major groups of salamanders are covered here, with some of the most interesting species from each group being given particular attention. Significantly, one whole chapter is devoted to one of the most enchanting species of all, the European fire salamander. This species is in a class by itself, with its large size, vivid black and yellow color pattern, prominent coal-black eyes, and responsive personality. (One of these is pictured on the cover.) The American mole salamander family, including the showy but secretive marbled and spotted salamanders and the large, feisty tiger salamander, are similar in their requirements and equally interesting.

A well planned terrarium containing some of these colorful creatures can be just like bringing a part of the outdoors, complete with its colorful fauna, into the home environment, and it can provide a great deal of satisfaction to observe their habits. Whether you already have some salamanders and newts or are contemplating buying some, this book is rather brief but has a great deal of helpful advice. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the beginner and intermediate owners
I found this book well organized and enjoyable to read. I am a casual reader of herp books because I like all reptiles and amphibians and this book is suitable for someone like me who wants to learn about this order of amphibian, or for the beginner and intermediate owners of these animals. Although newts and salamanders inhabit a range of environments, Edmonds was successful in letting the readers know how to properly care for each of the more common species. The chapters on housing, diet and health contains detailed information so a beginner can learn how to care for them properly. A more advance hobbyist will find his information on breeding informative enough to actually try to proceed with is critical aspect of owning newts and salamanders. He discusses the need for people to try to breed them in captivity and to keep good records and share the information due to the decline of their wild populations. The book should be in the hands of every newt or salamander owner and I intend to buy a copy for a friend who owns an axolotls. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Poison dart frogs (Dendrobates) not treefrogs (hylidae)
Poison dart frogs ARE NOT TREEFROGS!!
Seems like a good book, just added it to my cart,
I just find people that review a book down are stupid because "duh subject x is supposed to be there"-when it clearly shouldn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
This is a great book for a beginner tree frog owner.Unlike other books which spend a lot of time describing all the different species of frogs without any honest-to-goodness practical advice, this book has plenty of both.

This book covers some absolutely necessary basics - how to select a healthy animal, how to diagnose and treat an ill one, how to set up a frog's vivarium, what to feed, and how to breed the frogs.Importantly, it is written for a beginner frog keeper and focuses on species specifically recommended to beginners - green tree frogs, White's tree frogs, white-lipped tree frogs, and red-eyed tree frogs. The general information offered on all the species is really thorough without being overwhelming.Because red-eyed tree frogs, White's tree frogs and white-lipped tree frogs need some specific advice, these species are devoted their own chapters.

The book is well-organized into chapters and includes many black/white and color photographs of frogs and vivariums.A must-have for any frog beginner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Okay book
This is a great book, but it left out the very frog I was interested in.That being poison dart frogs. However, for beginners like me it had great information and led me to believeI should start with a simpler frog anyway!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's all you need to know!
While I was only interested in one frog from this book, the red eyed tree frog, it covered many others as well. This book is extremely helpful in providing both care and breeding tips for your frogs, and it even includes magnificent color photos. I refer to this book as my number one source for tree frog care and would recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars de Vosjoli KNOWS tree frogs
A+!This is the ONLY reference book you need if you have, or are thinking about getting, a tree frog. The book specifically covers the White's tree frog, the white-lipped tree frog, the red-eyed tree frog, and the greentree frog. It deals mainly with caring for your tree frog in captivity. There are lots of black & white pictures dealing with feeding, caringfor tadpoles & froglets, breeding, housing/caging, and even"doctoring" your tree frog. There is a small section of colorpictures which are very clear and well chosen; however, this is not acolored picture book like so many of my other "general" frog caremanuals seem to be. I especially recommend it for information that isspecific to the White's tree frog. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good general information for keeping dart frogs
This book has few pictures but good coverage on care for each type offrog. The author spends two chapters describing his expeditions to Panamaand Fr. Guiana. He BRIEFLY discusses how to build and outfit a terrarium(vivarium), diseases and breeding. The last half of the book discusseseach species individually. He gives a description, outlinesdistribution-habitat in the wild, lists optimum temperature and vivariumsize, and gives detailed information on their breeding habits and care oftads. I would have liked more focus on caring for the frogs and less onbreeding them and seeing them in the wild.Otherwise, good reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars poison arrow frogs
I have read several books on dart frogs and the set-up of this is ideal for an intermediate frog owner as well as the beginner. Branching off sections on: genus, species, general care, food, temp. setting, cageset-up, and difficulty of captive care; you should be more than ready tostart your first set-up( of course only with the suggested beginning frogs)or continue your knowledge of these beautiful creatures. I keep frogsmyself and feel this book would be wise to read if you plan to care for anypoison frog as long as their life span should be.

5-0 out of 5 stars exellent
this is a very complete book with a lot an useful information to anyone that wants to keep frogs

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures and detailed information
This book's excellent pictures and detailed information on the species of tree frogs found in the pet trade is what caught my eye. As a beginner I wanted something that would not lump tree frogs into a few basic groups since I know they exist in many diverse enviroments-from my own back yard the USA, to the tropics. I found the housing and feeding information to be complete and there were many pictures of terrariums and descriptions of some interesting habitat features, such as the "rain bar". I didn't know some tree frogs did not need high humidty and the author was very clear on which tree frogs were from more arid enviroments and did not need a lot of misting. The health section seemed short and obviously the author was trying to point out that illnesses were to be avoided at all cost by good husbandry. The book covered a lot of natural history and from that information owners should be able to tell what ranges of humidity to use for their tree frogs. The natural history sections of the various tree frogs was informative and interesting even if I can never get one of the more rare/expensive or delicate tree frogs. Overall, I think the book is a good read for people with tree frogs, or for people just interested in herps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
The book is very good for beginers who need help with tree frogs. I highly recomend it. But there were a few things that did bother me. First they really didn't specifiy the humidities at all, only ranges, and if the humidity is to high it can lead to respatory problems to your frogs. And second the author recomended using distilled water with frogs. NEVER EVER USE DISTILLED WATER ON ANY KIND OF AMPHIBIAN! It is very harmful to them, if you know anything about diffusion you'll understand. But other than these little things it is a very good book, and worth the money if your looking for good info on various species of tree frogs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
This book was quite thourough. I bought it to learn some more about tree frogs before I purchased one. I think that it is quite informative and not intimidating.

4-0 out of 5 stars tree frog book
This is a good book, gives you a lot of information.I gave it 4 stars because it doesn't give you specifics like I would have wanted. An example is that it doesn't tell you exact humidities that are needed, just a range of how much the humidity can go up or down.I also wish the terrarium set up pictures could have been bigger. Also more on illnesses would have been helpful. But I am glad I got this particular book.I looked at a lot and this seemed to be the best one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Response to "A Reader From Sweden"
what do you expect...this book was written by a man who breeds bearded dragons and it is a book about bearded dragons. It is a wonderful book and tells you everything you need to know about keeping a bearded dragon whether you are breeding them or not.I personally own a 1 year old dragon, and this has been like the bible to me.Whenever something is wrong i consult this book and it will always have the answer you need. All the other books are written by herpotologists who have never actually owned, bred, or loved a bearded dragon. This book is amazingly helpful and comes from a person who knows what he is doing.I would recommend it to anyone who is planning on owning and loving a bearded dragon.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a very useful book
I don't like this book at all, the authors only writes about keeping the bearded dragons in big outdoor vivariums, and not about having just 1-3 bearded dragons as pets.

Very little information about feeding, housing and everything you really want to know. The authors also doesn't seem to think about the bearded dragons as pets, to cuddle with and have fun with, but only as something you can breed.

I almonst never read or look in this book, and I regret that I bought it.

I rekommend Liz Palikas book "Your Bearded Dragon's Life" and the book "The guide to a owning a BD" by David Zoffer and Tom Mazorlig instead!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy
This book is poorly written, outdated (it is not worded as though it was written in 2003), and to add insult to injury is printed in China.

5-0 out of 5 stars Iguanas
Every thing I would ever need to know about Iguanas is in this book. I've come accross some other books about Iguanas , but this is buy far the best one out there. I've been studying Iguans for more than 15 years. Yet I'me learnning new things about them from this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Iguanas
This book was very helpful in learning about the do's and don'ts of having a pet iguana. The information was very clearly presented. I recommend this book to new iguana owners.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but basic
You will find all the basic stuff to start with your iguana but it is definitely not the biggest book you can buy. Try the book : Green iguana-The ultimate owner's manuel.

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good- a bit outdated
There is a decent overview provided by this book, but some of the information (at least in the edition I read) that is definitely outdated.Green Iguanas are NOT insectivorous at any stage of their life. This has been proven by several reputable universities in the last few years. Buy this book in addition to other manuals. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Well,
as another reviewer noted, you get what you pay for. You can certainly use this book; the info is sound. However, it's also somewhat basic, and most of it is available online. The range maps were cool, the photos were good, and even the info was OK. It's just all out on the web, for free. The book doesn't exactly go into great depth as to the natural habits and habitats of the animals (not really it's point), and is restricted to being a "pet store" type of book. It is what it is, and it's OK for it, but you can get better, more in depth info, for a little more, and pretty much the same info for free. It'll tell you how to keep your critter alive, and maybe breed it, but not much more.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's allright, but nothing special
I bought this book the day I got my Pueblan milk snake. It's interesting, but nothing special. You can get all of this information (plus some) off the internet for free. The only reason I gave as many stars as I did is because it had a lot of color pictures, there was one section in the back that proves useful. My snake was having some trouble shedding, and they had some helpful advice for when this happened.I live in a little hillbilly town in Oregon, and we don't have any exotic vets nearby, so without that info, my little Beetlejuice may have lost an eye, or worse.
All in all, it's worth a read. You get what you pay for ^_^

4-0 out of 5 stars buy it for the photos and the rest is lagniappe
the photos are the best of any of the "kingsnake" books, the maps are useful, and the care etc. sections are adequate.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best kingsnake guide for beginners
I have been involved in keeping and breeding kingsnakes for years and this is by far the best book available in its price range. Packed full of photos and current husbandry techniques, I highly recommend it to both novice and experienced hobbyists. The photographs alone are worth the price of the book--a must read for any kingsnake or milksnake enthusiast!

5-0 out of 5 stars The book is useful, interesting , and well priced.
This is an excellent book. We just got a Kingsnake and used the book to classify it; we found it informative for feeding and other care procedures. The book was well priced, had good photographs and the text was interesting, giving useful information about the hybrid Florida Intergrade Kingsnake (our pet) and how large it will get. John Ric ...
