Product Description
They're slithery. Some are dangerous. But they're all fascinating. Snakes combines excellent vivid color photography and interesting, entertaining text that details the lives of a variety of snakes in an enlightening, and often amusing, book.

In non-technical language, David Badger presents fascinating snake lore from across the centuries and describes everything from the physical traits and reproductive habits of snakes to territorial behavior and life span. Samplings of general "snake facts" are highlighted throughout, along with literary quotes on snakes from noted authors such as Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, and Annie Dillard. Featuring 100 full-color photographs--of everything from garter snakes, rattlesnakes, and vipers to cobras, pythons and anacondas--by renowned nature photographer John Netherton, Snakes also includes an intriguing appendix that explains how he managed to capture specific photos. For reptile and nature fans and pet snake owners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Snakes are awesome!
This is one of three awesome herp books that photographer John Netherton and writer David Badger collaborated on.It's such a pity that Mr. Netherton passed away when they were working on their third book, the lizards volume, since they probably would have produced equally great books on newts and salamanders and turtles and tortoises, the other two major herp groups they hadn't done yet. This particular book is loaded with beautiful photos of snakes, and lots of great information on them. There's information on, to name just a few subjects, snake photography, the importance of snake conservation (many people might have an irrational fear of them, but they have to admit that snakes do humanity a very valuable service through natural pest control), our relationship with snakes throughout history, families and species, snakes in literature, reproduction, vision, skin, hibernation, locomotion, and thermoregulation. There's also a wonderful two-page spread in the middle of the book, giving common and scientific names for a whole lot of different snakes.

Snakes featured in the photographs include the North American rough green snake (one of my new favorite species of snake after reading about how fascinated the specimen was by Mr. Badger's rotating screen saver), pigmy rattlesnake, tiger rattlesnake, king cobra, Western green mamba, two-striped forest pit viper, eyelash viper, monocled cobra, mud snake, kingsnake, milk snake, corn snake, ring-necked snake, Columbian rainbow boa, and Burmese python. There are so many amazing snakes I learnt about through this book, both venomous and non-venomous, dangerous and docile. There were also some surprises, such as the story behind the docile king cobra, whom the zookeeper described as very sweet, not the image at all that most people have of such a snake. This book should be recommended not only to people who already love herps, but also to people who are open to learning more about the wonderful world of snakes. These fascinating creatures deserve our respect, admiration, and protection, instead of being feared, hated, and killed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Snakes, snakes, snakes!
I thought this book was excellent for the most part. The photos were AWESOME, and really makes a person realize the true beauty of snakes. The snake profiles and fun facts were supurb, and I personally learned a lot. This book is an excellent read for those who want to learn more about the wonderful serpents of the world. ... Product Description
Did you know that the Marbled Burrowing Frog makes a noise like an outboard motor?Or that snakes have a transparent spectacle like a contact lens over the eye?Drawing on their lifelong interest in reptiles and amphibians, naturalists Brian Bush, Brad Maryan, Robert Browne-Cooper and David Robinson have brought together a wealth of information on the fascinating reptiles and frogs of the Perth area.

Reptiles and frogs are an integral part of the Australian bush; in the Perth region you may come across any of the 16 different frogs, 51 lizards and 24 snakes that occur there naturally.Yet most people would not be able to distinguish a Gwardar from a Dugite.

This comprehensive, easy-to-use guide describes each of the species in a straightforward manner, and the superb photographs and line drawings offer additional help with identification. The lively descriptions of the characters and quirks of the frog, lizard and snake world will captivate even those who have an aversion to these creatures.

A Guide to the Reptiles and Frogs of the Perth Region is an ideal gift for nature-lovers, gardeners, bushwalkers and students of any age.It is designed to be read at leisure or used to name that slithering, scampering or croaking critter in the garden or bush. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Yikes!
This is a horrifying book about lizards (just look at the cover if you doubt me).It is definitely not suitable for children under the age of 12, unless you want to scare the crap out of the child.

If you want your children to grow up being afraid of lizards, this book should do the trick. But most lizards are not dangerous at all.So in my opinion, there is no good reason to teach your child to be afraid of lizards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, amazing book!
My son is 7, and autistic, yet he can read.We are trying to fill him with as much information as he will take in, and having books like DK's eye wonder/eye witness series definitely makes that FUN!!!They are informative, and yet keep his attention, and he'll sit reading it over and over!We got this for $4.99 at our book fair, a great deal since he hasn't been able to put it down! Now he wants to be a biologist! That is SO inspiring, considering the journey we've been on in this world called autism!I know this will be tough enough to make it through all 3 of my sons, and the information is relevant and interesting enough to keep them all excited!

I found this book in the local library, and for a book that was written in 1978,it makes a very good spotters guide to the wildlife of Britain and Europe.A good book to use if you are a traveller,or just interested in wildlife in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to the reptiles of Europe
I am a soldier in the U.S. Army stationed in Kosovo for 6 months.I bought this book to try and identify any reptiles that I might encounter while serving my tour.I could not have made a better choice. The bookcovers all of Europe west of the Ural Mountains (including Ireland).Itlists all amphibians and reptiles withing that range. The keys are verywell written, and the corresponding line drawings are exellent. The bookalso covers many of the variations that occur withing the European lizards. I would recomend this book for the above reasons, over any book that onlycovers western Europe/Britain because this book also covers easter Europe, which is becoming more and more open to the west every year. This bookcould be a very big help to any herpetologist who is planing on travelanywhere in Europe, especially on the identification of the lacertids. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Any younster who is into creepy, crawly critters is going to LOVE this book!
When Jim Arnosky was a boy, he dreamed of creepy, crawly critters like many other kids and reptiles definitely fit the description.Reptiles can't warm themselves "internally the way birds and mammals can" and that is why, if have any in your area, you often find them sunning themselves on rocks to warm up or hiding in cool spots to cool off.The reptile species includes "turtles, snakes, lizards and crocodilians."The majority of the reptiles talked about or illustrated in this book are North American.

Both the person who wants to read about reptiles or simply browse the magnificent illustrations, will be more than satisfied. In this book you will learn many interesting facts including unique physical facts about each group, how many species there are, their sizes, how you can distinguish the difference between a limbless lizard and a snake, where they live, what they eat, why these critters are skittish, where they hibernate, how they protect themselves, the difference between a crocodile and an alligator, why some became endangered species and a bit about the non-native python. In the back of the book are additional recommended book resources.

You're just going to open this book and say, "Oh, yeah!"Jim Arnosky seems to get better with each book he writes and illustrates, if that can happen. The description of each species is clear and concise, but what really makes this book are the stunning illustrations. There are four fold-out pages teeming with life-size reptiles that just seem to pop right out at the reader. For example on the snake's fold-out there is a nest of snakes, including a banded-water snake, a diamondback rattlesnake, a copperhead, a cottonmouth moccasin, a kingsnake, a coral snake, an orange rate snake, a blue racer, a garter snake a tree boa, a northern water snake, a cobra and an anaconda. This book is going to make some youngster's eyes just shine with delight! 5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for a budding herpetologist
This book has had my son absolutely enrapured for weeks. There are probably 50 (+) or so line drawings each of snakes, salamanders, turtles and other lizards each with an interesting explanation. Your child can color in each drawing after finding its picture somewhere in the book. The diagrams are detailed enough for older kids as well as little ones probably starting with age 5 or so.This book also has pages of colored stickers for extra fun and observation. This is absolutely the best book of its kind.

Product Description

"The series has served as the definitive reference compendium on endangered and threatened species in Florida and is widely recognized as among the most authoritative such works in the nation. . . . I hope this revised series reinvigorates our resolve and commitment to endangered and threatened species conservation. These volumes provide a comprehensive database from which to embark."--Robert M. Brantly, executive director,Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission(from the Foreword to the series)Increasing human populations and their use of land and water resources are placing unprecedented stress upon many plant and animal species unique to Florida. Native habitats are rapidly being lost to agriculture, ranching, and forestry, as well as residential and commercial development. Conservation measures have been taken, with success in some cases, but in other cases the necessity for more stringent measures to protect the native fauna and flora has been proven. Though substantial strides have been made in the last decade, many Florida species are still perilously near extinction.     In the decades since the original publication of the Rare and Endangered Biota of Florida series, new data have been gathered and the condition of the natural environment has changed. In light of the continuing and increasing need to inform the residents, private and government agencies, and the business sector of the state, the Florida Committee on Rare and Endangered Plants and Animals (FCREPA) has rewriten the original series.      Each volume is arranged in order of species status: extinct, extirpated, endangered, threatened, rare, and special concern. The account of each species contains data categories of taxonomy, description, population size and trend, distribution range and history of distribution, geographic status, habitat requirements, and vulnerability of species and habitat. The review of the environmental situation of the species includes causes of threat, responses to habitat modification, demographic characteristics, key behaviors, conservation measures that have been taken, and those proposed for the future.     Tables list species currently on the FCREPA list with their status. Also included are the current designations of status by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission designations. A distribution map of Florida with an inset of the continental United States, Caribbean, and Central and upper South America shows the range of each species, and photographs or finely drawn illustrations of the species accompany the description.
